2 more cases of West Nile confirmed BY L. H. TIFFANY HSIEH

thsieh@yrmg.com

Two more confirmed human cases of West Nile virus have been reported in York Region. This brings the total number to three as of last Friday. Two men, 45 and 75, in Vaughan and one man, 76, in Newmarket are recovering at home, York associate medical officer of health Dr. Lilian Yuan said Monday. The region no longer discloses specific locations of probable or confirmed cases. “It’s all over York Region,” Dr. Yuan said. In August, a 54-year-old Markham woman was reported as the region’s first probable human case. She is recovering at home in Thornhill and her case has not been confirmed as West Nile virus. Hers is one of six probable human cases in Vaughan, Newmarket and Markham, pending lab testing. Due to an increase in mosquitoes this year caused by hot and humid temperatures that create better breeding conditions, labs are extremely busy and testing time can vary from case to case, Dr. Yuan said. The total number of mosquito pools testing positive for West Nile virus in the region has doubled to more than 40 in the last month. It’s the highest rate experienced since 2006. “We know the risk is widespread,” Dr. Yuan said. “The pools just confirm that.” Previously, York had two confirmed human cases of West Nile virus, one in 2011 in Vaughan, the other in 2008 in Markham. To prevent mosquito bites residents should continue using insect repellent, covering up and limiting outdoor activities during dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.

Richmond Green Secondary School student leader Ali Taghva whips up the crowd during a student protest at lunchtime yesterday. Wearing team jerseys and school T-shirts, students pleaded for their teachers to return to coaching and leading after-school activities, and for teacher unions and the government to negotiate an end to their disagreements.

Angry students want to kill Bill 115 BY KIM ZARZOUR

Students filed out of the classroom yesterday carrying balloons, basketballs, banners and band instruments — yet another group of teenagers calling on grown-ups to get their act together. The Richmond Hill students chanting outside Richmond Green Secondary say they just want arguing teachers and politicians to leave them out of their battles so that school life can get back to normal. at public schools in Brampton, Mississauga, Toronto and elsewhere in Ontario Wednesday as frustration and confusion grows over the prolonged labour dispute. Richmond Green was the third high school in York Region to stage a walk-out in the past week.

Wearing green jerseys and face paint, the boisterous group sang, danced and chanted “We want EC” and “We need sports”. Student president Taylor Goodfield said extracurricular activities, sports teams, semi-formal, prom and tutoring help have been cancelled at their school. Activities run by teacher volunteers have also been cancelled at Stephen Lewis in Vaughan, Westmount in Thornhill, Bayview in Richmond Hill, Woodbridge High and Maple High, she said. Relief may be on the road for York Region drivers BY AMANDA PERSICO

tivity as well as distribute traffic to decrease trip times and wear and tear on east-west regional roads. Markham council also wants staff to ensure each crossing has sufficient bike lanes. “Maybe someone can bike from one area to another,” Mayor Frank Scarpitti said. “Someone can do some shopping on their lunch instead of being stuck on Hwy. 7.” A crossing between Hwy. 7 and 16th Avenue is already in the works and will be included in the city’s 2013 budget, Markham engineering director Alan Brown said. And the design phase is expected to start next year. But some members of council were concerned if there is a need for all five crossings and asked staff to assess the need of each one

apersico@yrmg.com

Markham is looking at east-west avenues to connect the city and to make commutes a bit easier for drivers. City staff will continue to plan and prepare for Hwy. 404 crossings, following council approval at a recent development services committee. Markham, Richmond Hill and the region, are considering east-west crossings between 19th Avenue and Elgin Mills Road, Elgin Mills Road and Major Mackenzie Drive, Major Mackenzie Drive and 16th Avenue and between 16th Avenue and Hwy 7. The crossings will help relieve east-west congestion, provide better east-west connec-

and to set out a priority list related to traffic. “We have to look at what connectivity each crossing will provide,” said Mr. Scarpitti, referring to a proposed crossing between Major Mackenzie Drive and Elgin Mills Road. “There is nothing up there to connect.” Councillors were also concerned widening regional roads, especially where there are existing homes, such as Major Mackenzie Drive and 16th Avenue. Crossings could be seen as an alternative to widening some of those roads, Ward 3 Councillor Don Hamilton said. “Some of those east-west arterial roads are already at capacity,” he said. “But I know residents would not want to see their street widened.”

The region also plans to extend northbound highway off ramps at Elgin Mills Road, Hwy. 7 and Major Mackenzie as well as an interchange at 19th Avenue. Councillors also endorsed the three-way sharing plan between the region, Richmond Hill and Markham, where the region will be the lead for the project and each putting forward a third of construction and capital costs as well as a third of long-term maintenance costs. There will be another report and update before development services committee by the end of the year, Markham engineering director Alan Brown said. The environmental assessment process will start next year. For more information, visit markham.ca

Favourite TV dad will sing in Richmond Hill BY MARNEY BECK

rehearsals.” He feels that because “thirtysomethings” run the entertainment industry these days and “they grew up with me as a fantasy dad,” he’s getting numerous offers in a variety of roles to represent the baby boom generation. A case in point, he is performing in Richmond Hill for 10 of the 12 shows, but will miss two days “because I’ll be at the Superdome in New Orleans”. He is often seen in cameo roles in shows such as Funny or Die and How I Met Your Mother. Instead of being irritated that so many people think of him in his Growing Pains role, he is complimented. “That role made my life good

mbeck@yrmg.com

Best known for his fatherly role as Jason Seaver on the TV show Growing Pains, Canadian and Hollywood star Alan Thicke is genuinely excited to return to Toronto this week to prepare for his big role in Richmond Hill’s Queen For the Day: the Musical. Speaking from Los Angeles and squeezing a 15-minute interview into his busy day, Mr. Thicke laughs when asked if he will sing in the key role of Jack Bailey, the iconic host of a 1950s and 1960s’ Queen for a Day reality show. “This will be my fourth musical, and yes, I have quite a big number to sing that’s rather complicated, early in the show,” said Mr. Thicke, noting his career as a songwriter and performer began as a student when he played in “frat bands” at the University of Western Ontario. No stranger to music, he’s written 40 theme songs for games shows. His serendipitous connections to Queen for a Day — that opens Sept. 26 at the Richmond Hill Centre for Performing Arts — don’t end there. The character of Jack Bailey is “the granddaddy of game show hosts” and Queen for a Day was the first reality show, he said. “It was the first show to use audience ratings by using an applause meter with a live audience,” a forerunner to today’s online voting by worldwide audiences. Mr. Thicke has been a game show host himself, including host of the TV version of Pictionary in 1997 and he composed the theme song for a game show, The Wizard of Odds, which starred host Alex Trebek in

and opened all the doors; I’m happy people remember me fondly. Besides, I’m also known now as Robin Thicke’s dad,” he joked, in reference to his popstar son.

Busy mom Countdown Queen winner

Canadian and Hollywood star Alan Thicke will bring the key role of Jack Bailey to life in Richmond Hill’s production of Queen for a Day: The Musical. 1973, before Mr. Trebek went on to Jeopardy fame. Already involved in early rehearsals for the Queen for a Day musical, which will feature an allCanadian cast and creative team,

plus live orchestra, Mr. Thicke was pleased by the talent assembled. “I’m impressed and intimidated by the excellence of the cast and crew, they’ll be so far ahead of me, so I’m pumped up to get back to

Each week in The Liberal’s Queen Countdown Contest, one woman in the community is chosen to be Queen for a Week, entitling her to prizes including tickets to the show and two dozen roses. The most recent winner is Barbara Jean Madill of Thornhill. Ms Madill is a working mother who volunteers to make her community a better place. She has a full-time job, three children in university and participates in numerous charity runs to raise money to fight cancer, such as Harry Rosen, Terry Fox, CIBC Run for the Cure, Midsummer’s Night Run 15K and Women Set the Pace, to name a few. She is training for the Scotiabank half marathon, bakes two

dozen muffins every week (as her son likes “Mom-made” food) and works hard outside her home as well, receiving a Curb Appeal award for her front garden through the City of Vaughan three years running. She works very hard for her family, her home and her community and considers it “a wonderful treat to win” the countdown contest. There is still time to enter someone deserving in the Countdown Contest and win the grand prize draw, open to all residents of York Region. Long Weekend comedy about marriage now on stage The Curtain Club’s latest play is a comedy of the truths and lies that come to the surface when one couple visits another couple at their home in the country for a weekend. Playwright Norm Foster’s look at love and marriage should keep theatre-goers laughing all the way to the final curtain. The Long Weekend, a comedy directed by Diane Haskett, produced by Steve Heth-

erington and staged by Debbie Makarenko, is now on stage until Sept. 29. The production stars Victoria Curran, Colleen Simm, Daryl Marks and Steve Hetherington. Curtain time is 8 p.m. each evening and 2 p.m. for the Sunday matinée. For 58 years, the Curtain Club has provided quality theatre at affordable prices

to citizens of Richmond Hill and has been recognized as a centre for developing artistic appreciation, creativity, personal growth and friendship. Founded in 1954 with about 25 members, the group presented theatre in various temporary locations. Then, in 1971, club members raised funds and hammers to create the current facility at the corner of Newkirk and

Elgin Mills roads in Richmond Hill, which opened in 1972. Single tickets are on sale for $20; call the box office at 905-773-3434. For more on the current show and upcoming season, visit www.thecurtainclub.org

Have questions on project? It’s a planning and civic nightmare. Everyone can agree affordable housing is needed in Richmond Hill, but no one wants it in their back yard. A case in point is the planned affordable housing project on Yonge Street, north of Crosby Avenue, which would incorporate a youth shelter and offices of Pathways for Children, Youth and Families. To say more affordable housing options are needed is obvious. Regional Councillor Brenda Hogg says even the 225 units planned in the 10-storey building will “barely scratch the surface” of the long list of 6,500 families in York Region desperate for housing. And proponents say the Yonge Street location is far better than the previous proposal for Centre Street East. That was in an industrial location, very close to residential housing and a school, but not close to transit. But, as usual, the NIMBY — not in my back yard — syndrome has already reared its head concerning the new Housing York site. Although the residential units closest to the proposed affordable housing project are the non-profit Genesis Place apartments, there are some single-family homes backing on to the site. Residents in this established neigh-

bourhood received notification by letter of the proposed project and the dates of public meetings organized to outline plans for the building and answer questions. Residents say they have privacy concerns with the potential of new residents in upper-floor apartments being able to view directly into their back yards and windows. They also state it’s bad social planning to locate emergency housing, i.e. a youth shelter, right beside beer and liquor stores at Crosby Avenue. Some residents have contacted local councillor Carmine Perrelli to get more details. He has publicly stated he welcomes the project and looks forward to the opportunity to work with York Region and Pathways to ensure safety for youth and “compatibility with the neighbourhood”. Working out the details and issues to ensure current and future residents are happy in their own homes is what public meetings are all about. Bring your questions to one of two meetings: Sept. 26 from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Richmond Hill Central Library, hosted by York Region, or the town’s public meeting Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in council chambers.

MADD York Region needs a little volunteer help t the beginning of this year, I wrote a column stating the MADD York Region chapter was fighting for its existence and needed new volunteers to stay active. At that time, the Mothers Against Drunk Driving chapter had only two positions filled on its executive and was on “life support”. I asked readers “is MADD relevant in our community?” and you responded very positively. The meeting room at the York Regional Police station in Richmond Hill was filled to capacity at the next meeting, with people eager to sign on to participate and ensure the anti-drinking and driving message was heard, loud and clear, across York Region communities. I felt a personal need to help support this group and have been attending monthly meetings to publicize their community events and activities. MADD York Region needs our help again. As chance would have it, the woman who agreed to lead the group

A

Marney Beck and assume the president role, Dayna Switzer of Richmond Hill, went back to school this fall and can not continue her volunteer duties. Another member of the executive, Paolo Pecchia of Maple, has stepped up to the plate and agreed to take on the president’s job. Other members of the executive are grateful he has agreed to fill this key role. They include Jessica Seymour, a passionate young woman who handles public speaking engagements

with schools and other organizations; Micheline Cassidy, the treasurer; and Margaret Williams, who handles public education and victim support and sits on the national board. Each of these women has had her own tragic interaction with a drunk driver. Jessica lost her leg; Micheline her daughter and Margaret her younger sister. For these women and all other members of the MADD chapter, working to fight drinking driving in the community is more than a cause, it’s a personal fight; a painful passion. And don’t think because of the name Mothers Against Drunk Driving that there are no men backing this group. Navid Afsharian is vice president, Nathan McMillan provides computer and web support and Doug Strong has agreed to assume the court watchdog role, keeping the chapter and national body updated on court proceedings as charged drivers face justice for the mayhem they commit on our roads.

If you’d like to contact chapter president Paolo Pecchia,e-mail paolopecchia@sympatico.ca But the chapter needs more committed volunteers to make activities and events happen. People such as Allstate Insurance agency manager from Markham, Antoinetta Zambri, who has agreed to be the chapter secretary. In my opinion, the group also needs new blood to ensure the small group of committed members don’t burn out trying to do and be everything. If you can help with office support duties, can volunteer a few hours at public events, would like to participate in a holiday safe ride home project in December or would like to come to a meeting and find out what MADD York Region is all about, consider this your invitation. The next meeting is Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. at the York Regional Police station in Richmond Hill (on Major Mackenzie, just west of Yonge Street).

York Regional Police have charged a Richmond Hill man in connection to several cases of vandalism in Oak Ridges last week. Police received several calls that tires on vehicles on Limerick Street, near Yonge Street and Bloomington Road, were slashed. A 21-year-old man was arrested and charged with eight counts of mischief over $5,000. Police believe there may be others who have had their tires slashed and are asking them to come forward. If you have information, call police at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7220 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, or text YORK and your tip to CRIMES (274637).

The Terry Fox run at Mill Pond Park attracted 474 participants Sunday and raised approximately $25,000. More than 42 volunteers, especially the Rotaractors group, part of Richmond Hill Rotary, helped the event go smoothly. Run organizer Nasir Azam offered special thanks to Zain Dossal, past president Rotaract Club of Richmond Hill and president Shaikhadam, and his team. Numerous politicians came out to support the fundraiser to fight cancer, Mayor Dave Barrow, regional councillors Vito Spatafora and Brenda Hogg and Richmond Hill MP Costas Menegakis. Contributing to the festive atmosphere, there was musical entertainment, a magic show, balloon and face-painting fun, massages for runners and refreshments for all. “Thanks to all those who came and helped out,” said Mr. Azam. “It is through your efforts that we are able to continue the legacy of 32 years and keep this important cause alive.” He also thanked Shelagh Harris for her longtime devotion and help for the run, personally inscribing certificates with her beautiful handwriting. A second Terry Fox run took place in Richmond Hill the same morning, at the Brickworks Park in Oak Ridges.

Richmond Hill actor stars in interactive dinner theatre BY DAVID LI

Teresa Lombardi (left) and Patrizia Gianforcaro star in Hotel Albergo, a dinner theatre show.

Richmond Hill’s Patrizia Gianforcaro will be one of the stars in Hotel Albergo, an interactive, family-friendly dinner theatre show, taking to the Capitol Event Theatre stage in Toronto Sunday. With a background in dance, Ms Gianforcaro says performing on stage has been a longtime passion. “I started dancing when I was seven years old,” she said. “It’s just something I’ve always been passionate about. When I was 13, I enrolled at Unionville High School because of its performing arts program. I knew this is what I wanted to do.” Ms Gianforcaro’s love for the performing arts led her to a degree at Ryerson University with a specialization in dance, followed by work with Carnival Cruise Lines after graduation. Ms Gianforcaro teamed up in 2008 with

her friend and vocalist, Teresa Lombardi, and together founded the performing arts company Lady Luck Productions. Ms Lombardi grew up in Newmarket and has been working in commercials, in theatre and as a singer since age 4. Both women are proud and excited to being starring in Hotel Albergo this Sunday. Organized through Lady Luck Productions, Ms Lombardi says Hotel Albergo will be fun entertainment for everyone. “It is something new and exciting for an entire family to experience together,” said Ms Lombardi about the show, inspired by Toronto’s rich Italian culture. “Laughter, music, entertainment is what brings smiles and joy to people no matter what age or race.” Ms Gianforcaro adds that although Lady Luck Productions has put on a number of shows over the years, the benefit

Hotel Albergo promises to be their most challenging yet. “The show will have dancers, actors, musicians, illusionists, mimes ... It’s our biggest production to date,” she said of the show that can be described as Broadway meets Cirque du Soleil. “It starts at 2 p.m. so it’s perfect entertainment for the whole family and a chance to show your support for local artists.” David Li is a Thornhill freelance writer.

GOOD TO KNOW A portion of show proceeds will be donated to Nellie’s, a Toronto shelter and support group for women and children. Tickets are available at ladyluckproductions.ca/ events.html or by calling 416-671-2226.

Reader Damian McGuckian sent in this photograph of the long lineup outside the Bernard Service Ontario location Saturday morning. The driver licensing centre at 10909 Yonge St. opens Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and there are usually lengthy lineups. Mr. McGuckian suggests as there seems to be such high usage by residents for the government franchise, there should be more Service Ontario outlets in Richmond Hill. Nearby outlets include 100 Steeles Ave. W. in Thornhill and 50 Bloomington Rd. W in Aurora.

St. Christopher’s Anglican Church has offered a homework club for the past few years. A new September term starts this week and runs Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The Caring Tutor Homework Club is geared to students in grades 6 though 12, needing extra help in math and English. New registrants pay $100 for the term. The church is at 459 Crosby Ave., Richmond Hill at the corner of Bayview Avenue. For more information, interested student can e-mail info@stchris.ca or call 905-918-2205.

Teams and clubs are also being cancelled at random in elementary schools. Teachers’ unions have urged members to make individual decisions to withdraw their extra volunteer duties in response to the province’s Bill 115, which is aimed at reducing the deficit with teacher wage freezes, benefit cuts and a strike ban. Ali Taghva, a student at Richmond Green, gave a passionate speech to launch yesterday’s demonstration, lamenting the loss of the school play, trips and teams that make school feel like a second home. “Today, we stand on the precipice of a new age. The world thinks we have no voice, that the students have become both docile and ignorant,” said the 16-year-old, a member of the debate club and GayStraight Alliance. “We ask you to show the nation today that we stand united. This

is our movement; the students’ movement!” he said, to hundreds of cheering classmates. School staff watching from windows and the parking lot were tight-lipped, referring questions to the school principal, who in turn referred questions to the school board communications department.

UNIQUE AT EACH SCHOOL Spokesperson Licinio Miguelo said team and club cancellations are unique to each school, depending on teacher volunteers. No meet-the-teacher nights have been cancelled at any schools in the region, he said, but some have changed the format to an open house with those teachers who have not withdrawn their volunteer time. Elementary school parking lots emptied out by 4 p.m. Monday as teachers expressed their displeasure with the labour stand-off and high school teachers protested Tuesday by wearing black.

The unions are in limbo, relying on this haphazard approach to expressing their displeasure until they receive a strike mandate from their members, said York elementary teacher federation president David Clegg. Strike votes are being taken by teacher union locals across the province — Monday York high school teachers vote and Oct. 4 their elementary counterparts will do the same — and they are showing overwhelming support for work action, Mr. Clegg said. So far, 12 of the province’s 73 locals have voted with recordsetting results showing “in the 90 percentile” in favour, said Valerie Dugale, federation spokesperson.

‘STRONG MANDATE’ Colleen Ireland, head of York’s high school union, said the votes are “more a testing of the waters. Anything we can do, we will. A strong mandate is another step in the process and gives us a general idea of what our teachers are feeling”.

It will be up to the unions to decide what form a strike will take, said Mr. Clegg, the former head of the provincial union.

CABINET INTERVENTION Teachers could walk off the job, he said, leaving it to cabinet to intervene directly, something the recently passed legislation gives it power to do. Should that happen, he said, teachers’ current withdrawal of volunteer work will intensify, he said, and “chaos will ensue”. It’s not far from chaos now as parents and students struggle to determine what clubs and teams will proceed this year. Education Minister Laurel Broten said it’s up to school boards to clear up the confusion by posting information on the status of extracurricular activities online. York Region school board is considering ways to “maximize communication” on the issue, said spokesperson Licinio Miguelo.

better than nothing, it remains to be seen if the money allocated for each school is enough to save teams that have been dropped from the fall sports schedule. Steve Shantz, YRAA athletic coordinator, said it’s too late to see a return of any teams that elected to drop out for the fall agenda as schedules have already been drawn up. But, he said, it would help teams currently playing this fall to reduce costs. As well, Shantz was optimistic it will help teams participate in the upcoming winter and spring sport agendas.

‘TEACHERS CAN’T TALK’ “One of the biggest issues is the union isn’t allowing our teachers to talk with us, so we don’t know what’s going on with them,” she said. “If we were to organize an outof-school semi-formal, we don’t know how long this is going to last and it could all be a waste. If we are angry with teachers, it’s out of frustration over that.”

Some parents have spoken. Some teachers, who coach varsity sports teams in the York Region Athletic Association, have also voiced their displeasure about the exorbitant hikes in user fees imposed on students wanting to play for their varsity team this year. Those concerns did not fall on deaf ears, as the Ministry of Education announced Monday it will provide financial assistance to prevent the situation from escalating, as the YRAA has already experienced a decline of up to 29 teams from the fall sports schedule. Following approval of the York Region District School Board’s budget, the ministry has provided additional education grants to support student learning and engagement. As a result, the board will re-allocate $300,000 to cover more of the transportation costs for school clubs and teams. The funds are to be divided among all 31 YRAA schools, based on the formula used to determine the existing transportation disbursement of $150,000. This information was not available when the board’s budget was passed in the spring. “We are committed to equity and excellence in education,” York Region District School Board director of education Ken Thursto said. “We are pleased to provide further support for transportation costs, and make participation in school clubs and athletics more accessible for all of our students.” The additional funding will definitely help lower fees for participation in student teams and clubs, Rich-

mond Hill’s Alexander Mackenzie High School principal Shawn Bredin said. “That is good news for all students and families.” Under new guidelines released by the ministry last year, fees cannot be charged for materials students need to graduate, such as textbooks or basic course supplies. As a result, some students at the secondary level had seen an increase in fees for extracurricular athletics and clubs this year, as the board reallocated funding to support curriculum needs. While receiving something is

“We appreciate it’s frustrating for parents and we are grateful for their understanding and patience.” Students, meanwhile, continue to organize protests via Facebook, text and Twitter, with hashtags such as StudentMovement2012 and KillBill115. Ms Goodfield promised more action from Richmond Green, where students are “negotiating” funding privately to continue extracurricular activity outside school.

Charged with providing an important perspective on Games planning and implementing a youth-focused initiative, the council will get to work right away. “Inspiring and engaging the next generation of leaders is central to the vision of the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games,” said Ian Troop, chief executive officer of TO2015. “We want the Games to touch as many people as possible and this council will be the driving voice to ensure the Games are youth-focused and inclusive.” TO2015 selected 34 members — 16 advisors and 18 ambassadors — aged 16 to 24 from the GTA who demonstrated leadership, volunteerism and community engagement. The Games in July of 2015 will draw 10,000 athletes and officials and feature 51 sports. For more, visit toronto2015.org

Three York Region residents have clearly been moved by royalty. These young people have been moved to not just get up off a couch and head to their local gym. Rather, they have been motivated to go great distances. Eric Fok of Richmond Hill hiked 85 kilometres along the Western Uplands Backpacking Trail in Algonquin Park. Meaghan Choi of Thornhill hiked 60km along the Bruce Trail. Thornhill resident Laila Nasser hiked 150km hike through Karbala, Iraq. Last week, the three were among 128 young people to receive the Gold Award of Achievement as part of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, at a ceremony at the Ottawa Convention Centre. Hiking is just one of several accomplishments the youths achieved on their way to gold. Eric lead a youth group, teaching them scout craft and camp skills. He was also a program leader at the Blue Springs Scout Reserve in Milton. Eric achieved his award as a member of the 11th Toronto Scout troop. The Duke of Edinburgh’s

Thornhill man part of Cuban tribunal Thornhill’s Keith Bolender, a respected university lecturer on Cuban political affairs, has written a second book on the decades-long cold war between the small country and the United States. His first book was Voices from the Other Side: An Oral History of Terrorism Against Cuba. The book received critical acclaim in England, North America and Cuba and Mr. Bolender was even allowed to present a copy personally to Fidel Castro. His latest book is Cuba Under Siege; American Policy, The Revolution and Its People tracing how American policy against Cuba has created a siege mentality and the negative affect it has had on Cuban society. It will be published later this year by Palgrave in New York. This weekend the longtime dispute in philosophy between the two countries is the focus of a Toronto conference on the plight of the Cuban Five, agents sent to Florida to stop terrorist acts, who ended up being imprisoned themselves. The Peoples’ Tribunal and Assembly for Justice for the

KEITH BOLENDER: Thornhill author and expert on Cuba will be part of this weekend’s tribunal in Toronto. Cuban Five will be held at Toronto City Hall, council chambers, starting this Saturday, Sept. 22 at 9 a.m. and continuing through Sunday. The tribunal will hear witnesses, including wives of the prisoners, who will testify regarding the historical and political context of this case, its legal process and developments since the trial. Among the jurors will be Mr. Bolender, age 56, joining others such as Danny Glover, internationally acclaimed

actor; Cindy Sheehan, radio host and peace advocate; Canadian MP Libby Davies; and a United Church minister. At the end of the conference a legal decision will be rendered. “Unfortunately, the case is almost completely unknown in Canada and this event is an effort to show that these Cuban agents were simply sent to Florida to try and prevent further acts of terrorism — and ended up being jailed for that,” explained Mr. Bolender. Among the presenting sponsors are the Canadian Network on Cuba, the Canadian Cuban Friendship Association and numerous Canadian union organizations. “I think the tribunal is important and I hope as many people as possible are able to come out. Hopefully the public pressure will make a difference in the movement to release the five,” said Mr. Bolender. There is no cost to attend any part of the event. Help plant, green two parks In partnership with the Town of Richmond Hill, Evergreen invites you to join in on two events this fall to improve our local parks. Through ongoing efforts, you can help maintain two parks which will be an oasis for birds, butterflies and other wildlife. A Hunter’s Point Wildlife Park wildflower planting will be held this Sunday, Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to noon. Participants should bring weather appropriate clothing (event held rain or shine), long pants, sturdy, closetoed footwear and a water bottle. Gloves, tools, water to drink and snacks will be provided. Meet with other volunteers and Evergreen workers at the park, located on the west side of Hunter’s Point Drive, just north of Hwy. 7. An Evergreen representative will greet you at the southern entrance to the park, across from Langstaff Road West. A similar community planting event will be held in Oak Ridges at Russell Tilt Park Saturday, Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. to noon. Join other participants and Evergreen representatives to plant native shrubs. Wear appropriate clothing and footwear; gloves, tools and refreshments will be provided. Look for an Evergreen representative on the east side of Blackforest Drive, between Regatta Avenue and Greyfriars Avenue. Parking will be avaliable along Blackforest Drive.

At 1:30 p.m. The Argues take to the stage, a family rock ’n’ roll band featuring two young multi-instrumentalist, singing daughters, mom on drums and dad playing rhythm guitar. They will perform original songs, plus popular blues, rock, folk and country tunes. Mad Science returns again at 2:30 p.m. with a different show, this one exploring a combination of chemistry and physics. Enjoy a colour change demonstration, a genie appearing out of a bottle and a giant foam snake. Sponsors helping the Town of Richmond Hill present the fair include media sponsor The Liberal; platinum sponsor Richmond Hill Mobility Accessibility Foundation; and gold sponsors Richmond Hill Mitsubishi and Epoch Times.

You can help in the shoreline cleanup effort BY AMANDA PERSICO

apersico@yrmg.com

This week, volunteers from across the country will be cleaning up local shorelines in one of the largest environmental events in Canada. The Shoreline Cleanup promotes healthy aquatic life by clearing debris, garbage and litter from local rivers, streams, creeks and wetlands. Since 2003, more than 400,000 participants have removed nearly one million kilograms of garbage from our shorelines. Last year, more than 41,000 kilgrams of litter and garbage was picked up along shorelines in Ontario, including some peculiar items such as a payphone, rice cooker, wedding dress, pregnancy test, motorcycle parts, shopping carts and clothing.

There are several locations in Markham still in need of site coordinators, including along Apple Creek Boulevard, Miline Park and Cricklewood Park in Thornhill. Volunteers are encouraged to bring extra garbage bags, rubber gloves and rain boots, as some work is done in shallow water areas. ONTARIO’S DIRTY NUMBERS: Concord lottery players cash in The community of Concord has been twice lucky this summer. And twice, a Valentino has been lucky, too. Linda Yearwood and Aldo Valentino, residents of Concord since 1984, are celebrating their million-dollar win after learning a Lotto Max ticket they purchased earlier this summer was a winner. Just two months before the couple bought the winner at Glen Shields Pharmacy in Concord, Valentino Hyden learned the ticket he purchased at Vaughan Convenience in Concord was also worth $1 million. Aldo Valentino, who found out about his win two weeks ago, is still stunned by the good news. The lab technician, and his wife, a secretary, bought the ticket at the start of the summer and then forgot about it. For two months the ticket was cast aside, left in the letter box, then stuck on the kitchen fridge. It was Aug. 30, on a casual run into the store to check their numbers, when they heard the good news. “I just remember tears flowing down my face when I found out,” Ms Yearwood said. The couple plan on using their windfall toward paying off debts, investing the rest for their retirement and taking care of their children aged 22 and 26. — Kim Zarzour

Last year, more than 17,000 volunteers helped clean up more than 1,000 kilometres of shoreline in the province. Here is what they picked up: 41,918 – kilograms of litter removed from shorelines; 334,066 – items removed from shorelines; 3,954 – filled garbage bags; 1,748 – filled recycle bags; 105,602 – cigarettes and cigarette filters, along with

6,627 cigar tips and 7,345 tobacco packages; 38,344 – food wrappers and containers; 28,186 – bottle caps and cup lids; 25,456 – plastic bags; 24,894 – plastic bottles; 17,537 – soda cans; 14,858 – cups, plates, forks and knives; 14,062 – straws and coffee stirrers; and 9,983 – glass bottles.

How to find the right home The first step in the home buying process is figuring out what you can afford. “Once you have an idea of the home price you can afford, it’s time to meet with your realtor to figure out what kind of home you can buy for that price and where it may be located,” says Ron Abraham, president of the Ontario Real Estate Association. “Your realtor will be able to guide you through the home buying process and advise you on your best possible options based on your financial situation and home buying wish list.” Choosing a location is the next factor to consider in the home buying process, according to Abraham. “Urban or suburban neighbourhood? Rona Maynard re– members vividly the impenetrable gloom that

overwhelmed her in 1972, when “it seemed that a heavy metal lid had been lowered on my world, blocking out every glim-

mer of light. That gloom was depression and it’s gone now — the light is back — and on Oct. 21 she will share that light with others.

The former editor of Chatelaine magazine is the keynote speaker discussing From Sad to Glad; Five Surprising Way to Find Joy, at the fourth annual Joy of Aging event. Today is the last day to purchase early-bird tickets for the popular event that raises money to support the mental health program at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital. Ms Maynard will share how she overcame depression, an illness that touches one in five Canadians, striking women twice as often as men.

3 for $24

She will be joined by MC Erin Davis, radio personality and co-host of 98.1 CHFI’s Erin and Mike show. Since 2009, the morning fundraiser has grown, with more than 350 women attending in 2011. To date, the Joy of

Aging Breakfast has raised $75,000 for Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital (formerly York Central Hospital). This year, guests can learn everything they always wanted to know about mental health but were afraid to ask. During the past two years, almost 40,000 people sought help from the hospital’s mental health program, an increase of 20 per cent of patients in crisis and 25 per cent in day treatment and outpatient clinic visits.

MORE NEED HELP Mental health advocates say these increases reflect south York Region’s increasingly diverse and growing communities in need of help. The program needs four new beds at $6,000 each and $40,000 worth of renovations to ensure comfort and safety for patients and staff. This year’s Joy of Aging event will feature sponsorship booths and a fitness activity, Ask the Experts panel, live music, silent auction, healthy breakfast, comedian, door prizes and gift bags.

York Region faces a serious affordable housing crunch so the opening of 30 new units in Vaughan to serve lowincome families was met with much fanfare. More than 150 people, including politicians from all levels of government, showed up last Friday to celebrate the opening of the Reena Community Residence at the Joseph and Wolf Lebovic Jewish Community Campus, near Bathurst Street and Major Mackenzie Drive on Richmond Hill’s boundary.

WAITING LIST “As good as we’ve been in so many different areas, this is one area, social housing, that we struggle with and we have a large waiting list of all sorts of folks who require assistance,” York Region chairperson Bill Fisch said. “We do all that we can to ensure we cover that list as much as possible, but it’s the groups that get together, like Reena and others, who come to realize that they to have to assist in this issue that we have. They’re the ones who have been most successful at

helping us do what we have to do.” Reena’s new residence features housing for up to 84 people in 60 self-contained apartments, half of which are available to low-income tenants. “I’m in awe of the work that you did and the passion that you put into making this building a reality,” Joan Glick Gold, chair of Reena’s board of directors.

and Social Services toward operating costs. “… It’s going to be a new place for seniors, for people with special needs and for low-income households. Really, that’s great news for people that need a hand up and, as well, it’s more rental options for local residents,” said Labour Minister Lisa Raitt speaking on behalf of Human Resources Minister Diane Finley, who is also responsible for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. “When we provide these new housing units it will contribute to the economic (and) social well-being of the entire community.” Richmond Hill MPP Reza Moridi said the project is just one example of the provincial government’s commitment to providing affordable housing in communities across Ontario. “These 60 new units will provide a safe and stable home that will improve the lives and well-being for many people in this community,” he said. “In fact, the entire community can benefit from the recreation and educational programs that this new building is going to offer.”

HOUSING FACILITIES Reena, established in 1973, is a non-profit social service agency that helps people with developmental disabilities integrate into mainstream society. As a Jewish organization, people enrolled in Reena’s programs and living in its residences observe Jewish culture, values and traditions. But its programs and housing facilities are open to people of any faith. The new residence received $4.2 million from the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program. It also got a boost of $1.1 million in “municipal financial incentives” and $2.6 million from the Ministry of Community

Rookie working hard for golf breakthrough BY DAVID LI

Having opted out of a full scholarship after her freshman year at the University of Texas, Rebecca Lee-Bentham has been doing most of her learning on the golf course. The 20-year-old LPGA rookie is confident the lessons learned combined with her hard work will soon lead to a breakthrough. One person who is cheering for Lee-Bentham, a former Bayview Secondary student, to break through is former University of Texas Longhorn classmate and current NBA player, Tristan Thompson of Brampton. “She always did her school work, which was a good thing, recalled Thompson of Lee-Bentham. “She’s always worked hard at everything and I’m excited to see another Longhorn doing something big. Lee-Bentham says the most vital lesson she’s learned this year has been the importance of keeping a positive state of mind. “Everyone says that the mental aspect of golf is a huge part of the game and it’s true, she said. After a strong start where she made the cut in three out of her first four tournaments,

call: 905-884-1105

Lee-Bentham has struggled with consistency recently. “The mental game is the toughest part for rookies, she said. “We come out with high expectations and throughout the season we realize how hard it actually is out there. “Results wise, I haven’t accomplished what I was looking for this year ... yet, she said. “It’s tough to keep your confidence up. Luckily, the support I’ve been getting has been helping me stay strong mentally and work through the tough times with a positive attitude. With only two more tournaments remaining in North America this season, Lee-Bentham remains optimistic. “I think that I’m on the right track, she said. “Only time will tell when it’s my turn to break through. I just need to keep working hard to improve every day and eventually things will click. Lee-Bentham competes in the Navistar LPGA Classic running today through Sunday in Prattville, Alabama.
