New Sports Hall of Fame inductees named All eyes have been on Pan Am athletes this summer, competing right here in the GTA, but it’s time to focus on the athletes and sports figures that are homegrown in Richmond Hill. Seven athletes and sports builders will be inducted into the Richmond Hill Sports Hall of Fame next month: Nathalie Bendavid (rugby), Bob Emerson (figure skating), Michael Kyte and Doreen Kyte (5-pin bowling), Rene Fournier (hockey), Vanessa Ley (hockey), Ted Moritsugu (ringette) and Jean McCron (lawn bowling). “For almost two decades, Richmond Hill has been honouring those whose sports achievements have a lasting impact on the town,” said Mayor Dave Barrow. “The Richmond Hill Sports
Hall of Fame recognizes the value of sport and the role it plays in building a vibrant community.” The Sports Hall of Fame currently has 32 inductees — including such big names as Olympic figure skater Elvis Stojko and NHL alumnus Bob Wall. There are also behind-the-scenes people who supported or trumpeted the achievements of local sports figures — from peewees to senior athletes — such as former longtime Liberal sports editor Fred Simpson, who died in May. Each of the inductees has contributed to the development and advancement of sports in Richmond Hill.
“Congratulations to the seven new inductees,” said Anthony Marcovitz, chairperson of the Sports Hall Fame Committee, announcing the new members. “We are proud of our athletes’ achievements and the tireless, behindthe-scenes efforts of sports builders who dedicate their time to organizing games and training schedules, coaching and more.” The Richmond Hill Sports Hall of Fame was first established in 1997 in council chambers at the former town hall (10266 Yonge St.). Today, the Sports Hall of Fame is located inside Elgin Barrow Arena, which has a strong tie to local See CURRENT, page 9.

Happy to speak to media and appear at debates, say Menegakis, Parsa
Confused by new riding boundaries? Not sure which riding you vote in?
have heard of no such thing,” said Menagakis, who is running in the new Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill riding.
The new Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill riding’s northern boundary is Wellington Street in Aurora, the western boundary is Bathurst Street and eastern boundary is Hwy. 404. The southern boundary runs east along Elgin Mills Road West, then dips down Shirley Drive to a portion of Major Mackenzie Drive East.

Are Conservative candidates in the federal election campaign being muzzled? Some media reports are quoting party insiders who say candidates have been advised not to take part in all-candidate events or media interviews. Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s leadership campaign is also facing criticism for late notice when he appears in local ridings. But Richmond Hill’s local Conservative candidates say there is little substance to the rumours that Tories are dodging the spotlight. Costas Menagakis and Michael Parsa both responded to The Liberal’s requests for interviews today and confirmed they will participate in next month’s all-candidate events for their ridings. Menegakis was most recently the Conservative MP in the Richmond Hill riding, but is now running in the new Aurora-Oak RidgesRichmond Hill riding. The Tories faced criticism in 2011 for skipping debates and avoiding media. Last week, a reporter with the Ottawa Citizen was rebuffed when he sought an interview with Joe Daniel, running in the new riding of Don Valley North.
‘NO INTERVIEWS’ Daniel’s campaign told the Citizen the Conservative MP for Don Valley East would not be doing any interviews until after ballots are counted — fueling speculation that Harper’s team is taking a tight-lipped approach again this election. But Richmond Hill’s Tory candidates said they feel free to speak with the media. “I was really surprised to see those muzzling stories. I
COSTAS MENEGAKIS: ‘Happy to speak to media any time.’ “I’m happy to speak to the media any time. It’s an important way to reach out to people… And I am grateful for the all-candidate event; it’s an opportunity to talk about my platform and say who I am.”
MICHAEL PARSA: ‘I have never been told not to participate.’ “I won’t speculate on rumours,” said Parsa, Richmond Hill riding PC candidate. “Speaking for myself, I have never been told not to participate or not to say this or that. “It’s democracy… the least we can do is offer ourselves forward to let people hear what we have to say.” Ray Pons, Parsa’s campaign manager, said some of the more “volatile” candi-
dates may have been advised to “stay away from the camera,” but Parsa has not. “‘Muzzle’ may be too strong a word,” Pons said. “There has been a certain amount of dissuasion from participating in debates. “To be honest, none of the parties are very comfortable with commentary from any candidate anywhere. One comment made in an emotional moment, maybe out of frustration, can make us all look like a bunch of misogynist or racist or biased or naïve or with a hidden agenda.” Parsa, running for office for the first time, has been given free reign, he said. “He loves debates and meet and greets.”
TALKING POINTS However, like most candidates, he has been given talking points and items to avoid saying, Pons said. Emails from his campaign office are sent to national headquarters for vetting first, but “ours have usually been sent back, within minutes”, with approval. Parsa said he views it as part of the job “I look at it as if we are a team and the leader, I view as a coach, giving us strategy. We all sign up for this as members of a political party that we’re running for.” As for the late notice from Harper’s campaign team, both Parsa and Menagakis point to “security issues”. “For the first time ever, we are facing — literally — terrorism at home. It has never been a campaign issue. The economy and leadership have been the primary talkto issues,” said Pons, “but for the first time, safety of Canadians, not just abroad, but here at home, have been real issues.”
The boundaries of the new Richmond Hill riding are Elgin Mills Road West, Shirley Drive and Major Mackenzie Drive East on the north; Bathurst on the west, Hwy. 404 on the east, and the southern boundary runs along hwys. 7 and 407 and includes a small slice of the municipality of Markham.
Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau’s campaign team has provided more advance notice of events. A press notice was sent out at 1 p.m. Aug. 25, for example, alerting media of an event in Newmarket the next morning.
SECURITY CONCERNS But there are added concerns when it is the prime minister, Pons said. “It’s purely for security reasons … to protect against those with less than honourable intent, who may plan and create a major disturbance. It may very well be more paranoid than they need to be, but it’s all about safety.” In fact, he added, “we are more frustrated than anyone.” Local campaign teams are also getting less than 24-hour notice, only learning of Harper’s visit to Markham this week at 6 a.m., just a few hours before his arrival. “I am confident it’s not a deliberate attempt to keep journalists in the dark.”
GOOD TO KNOW: An all-candidate event in the Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill riding will be held Thursday, Sept. 24 starting at 6:30 p.m. at Dr. G. W. Williams Secondary School in Aurora. An all-candidate event for the Richmond Hill riding will be held Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the Langstaff Community Centre in Richmond Hill. Both are presented by the Aurora and Richmond Hill chambers of commerce, the Aurora Banner and Richmond Hill Liberal newspapers, and community partners.

o all these people talking and texting on their cellphones as they drive make you feel inferior? That’s how I feel — like my life must be pretty ho-hum when I have nothing more important to do than navigate this big piece of metal down the road to my destination. Don’t I have an urgent phone call to make or text message to answer? “Affirmative Steve. Sell my $1M in Google stock as soon as market opens. thx. :) And about my Apple shares... “Wait, have a call. “Buckingham Palace? Certainly I have some thoughts on stopping the unauthorized photos of Prince George. Glad you reached out. Although isn’t he a little young to be smoking cigars, partying with princesses in his playpen? I’ll send a private message. “Wait, I have a call.... “Becky, I know you’re only 10, but if you don’t perform that emergency tracheotomy with a pen, the president is not going to survive. Be brave! I’ll send you an instructional video. Check your whatsapp.” No, unfortunately or fortunately, my life is not nearly as interesting as the life of every other driver around me, seems to be. I just put down my phone and drive my car to where I mean to go, and if I do ever need to make a very brief call, I do a hands-free thing that did not exactly cost very much to install, considering the alternative is breaking the law or, heaven forbid, crashing into something or someone because my attention has been divided between my phone and the road. Although where I tend to drive, incredibly, there are people all around me who have a phone either firmly held to their ear or, the one I find interesting, firmly held in front of their face as they drive along. Then, of course, there’s the car that is drifting over the line every few hundred metres, driver texting and driving their merry way along. Do you pull up beside the person with head pointed upward but
Bernie O’Neill eyes looking down, the light changes, and their car stays put? I’m not sure who they think they are fooling but, hey, it’s entertaining. All talented multi-taskers, these drivers speed up and weave in and out of traffic once they do put the phone down, and I don’t mind, because, of course, they are on their way to the emergency room to save the Pope or are headed to the Pentagon to advise U.S. generals about their response to an impending nuclear attack. Me, I’m just driving. This week, new fines came in to effect in Ontario that have hiked the penalty for people who are driving distractedly to $490. But considering it’s not unusual to be in a car and see the driver ahead of you, behind you and beside you on their cellphone, either talking or texting or, I guess, online, looking at funny cat videos, I wonder how much impact it will have. That’s a lot of cracking down for one crackdown. One solution might be to take people’s cars away, so they can ride transit while using the phone. Could be a boon for Viva or GO. Although perhaps if police confiscated their phones, that would get people’s attention, because that appears to be the one item they dearly love, in some cases it would appear, more than life itself. Officer: “Sir, I’m taking your phone to the police station.” Driver: “My phone? I’ll come with you!” I hope the crackdown works. In the meantime, as long as you drive under the assumption everyone else on the road is either inebriated or posting to Facebook, you will have taken a sufficient amount of caution.
Open letter to the community: The Rotary Club of Richmond Hill is organizing the 36th annual TV Auction for Dec. 5 and 6, 2015. This is the premier fundraising event in York Region and it has raised more than $2 million since it began in 1979. Donors to this event help to support local, non-profit and charitable organizations. For each donation you make, your generosity will be recognized on air and be repeated over the course of six to eight minutes. As a donor, your company will help the community and receive exceptional advertising value. Once your item is entered into our computer system, it and your company will also be advertised on our website as part of the catalogue. The sooner you donate, the sooner your ad goes online. The auction does more than just raise money. It also brings multiple charities into contact with each other so that they can work together and co-ordinate
their efforts. In addition, it supports Rotary initiatives such as tree planting on the Oak Ridges Moraine, business training and volunteerism for local youth, special projects, such as service dog training, and school, water and healthcare projects in the developing world. This auction on Rogers Television has a reach of approximately 250,000 homes and 500,000 people. The website, www.tvrotary. com, allows for online bidding and had more than 180,000 hits last year. People all over York Region organize parties where they watch the auction late into the night, bid on items and buy gifts for friends and family. Our committed viewership is an ideal audience for you to advertise your business. This year, we are offering a new opportunity to sponsor the auction, with the main sponsor receiving TV commercials on Rogers TV, produced by Rogers TV. If you are interested, we can send you a sponsorship package. In addition, if you donate items with a retail value over $1,000, you receive multiple special mentions during the broadcast.

Portraits of Giving Exhibit comes to Richmond Hill The 6th annual Portraits of Giving Exhibit is setting up in Richmond Hill for the month of September — shining an artistic spotlight on those who give back to their community. The philanthropic exhibit was unveiled at an opening reception at Upper Canada Mall in May. Twelve outstanding York Region people who give back to their community and show good character were honoured by local mayors and MPPs, who presented certificates of congratulations. Guest speaker for the evening was Megan Thomas from York Region Character Community. All of the tick-

et sales went to the Character Community Foundation of York Region to support their Slap Shot program. Karen Merk of Merk Photography in Richmond Hill has once again captured each participant in a unique way, showcasing each person’s individual way of giving back. Each portrait tells a story and is the inspiration to the written stories by Oak Ridges writer and Liberal columnist Melony Teague, also found in the accompanying 2015 Portraits of Giving book. A limited edition of the book is now available for purchase. This year two honourees from Richmond Hill are depicted in the exhibit: Michelle Risi-Anagnostopoulos and Gordon Klein. Risi-Anagnostopoulos is recognized for her many philanthropic endeavours, but particularly her fundraising efforts for the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation of Canada. Klein was nominated by the Richmond Hill Chamber of Commerce, a man who works behind the scenes volunteering his time to help the chamber and other businesses with their IT (information technology) needs. “It is empowering to give back,” said Risi-Anagnostopoulos. “Every opportunity we have to contribute is a reminder that we have the power to shape the kind of world we want to live in.”

For his part, Klein explained: “For me, the benefit of giving back is the personal satisfaction that comes from helping someone solve a problem that they wouldn’t have otherwise been able to do.” The 2015 honourees in the Portraits of Giving include Nayan Patel of Whitchurch-Stouffville; Markham historian Lorne Smith; Aurora’s Ingrid Kulbach; and brothers Matthew and Michael Waddington, nominated by the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce. Vaughan honourees are Elvira Caria and Nadia Cerelli-Fiore of the Vaughan food bank. The honouree from East Gwillimbury is Sharon Bates, recognized for outstanding efforts to raise funds for Southlake Hospital in Newmarket. The exhibit will be on view at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts, 10268 Yonge St. from Sept. 1 to Sept. 30 and then will travel to Vaughan, Newmarket and Markham.

The newly amalgamated United Ways of Toronto and York Region this week launched an inaugural regionwide campaign with a goal to raise a record $100 million. Toronto Mayor John Tory helped kick-start the ambitious initiative that runs until the end of the year. This historic fundraiser will bring together more than 164,000 supporters from the waterfront of downtown Toronto to the southern shores of Lake Simcoe, United Way 2015 campaign chairperson Mark Wiseman said. The target is the largest amount the charity has ever raised to directly invest in improving lives locally, said Wiseman, who serves as Canada Pension Plan Investment Board president and CEO. In addition to the $100 million, the agency is committed to raising additional millions on behalf of other charities. Funds raised will support a network of 220 agencies across Toronto and York Region and innovative United Way initiatives as part of the agency’s new strategic plan, United Way president and CEO Susan McIsaac said. “This campaign is about so much more than the money we raise,” she said “It’s about improving people’s lives in the communities where they live and work.” The campaign has already had a strong start, thanks to the generosity of donors Donald Guloien and Irene Boychuk. The Guloien Family Challenge Grant will provide up to $1.2 million to match all new donations. “I’m honoured and humbled to be joined by more than 25,000 volunteers in more than 760 workplaces as we unite around a common goal — building a stronger Toronto and York Region for everyone,” Wiseman said. United Way Toronto and York Region is a charity dedicated to creating opportunities for a better life for everyone from the waterfront of downtown Toronto, to the southern shore of Lake Simcoe. Working in partnership with others, the agency mobilizes people and resources to support a network of agencies that help people when they need it most. United Way also addresses the root causes of social problems, working to change community conditions for the better over the long term. For information, to donate funds or volunteer your time, visit unitedwaytyr.com, twitter.com/unitedwaytyr, facebook.com/unitedwaytyr or instagram.com/unitedwaytyr #wearepossibility or blog at imagineacity.ca.

In Loving Memory of JASON BOODRAM September 2nd, 2008 No words we write can ever say How much we miss you every day As time goes by the loneliness grows, Hearts ache with sorrow, And secret tears flow. We think of you in silence, We often speak your name, But all we have are memories, And photos in a frame. No one knows our sorrow, No one sees us weep, The love we have for you Is in our hearts to keep. To spend one more day with you, Touch your face, talk a while Share your dreams, plans, Hear your laugh, See your smile. We’ve never stopped loving you, We know we never will. Deep inside our hearts There’s a place no one can fill. We love you and miss you, Our precious Jason. Love always, Mom, Dad and Alan

Our Mother of Perpetual Help Holy Spirit Thou make me see everything and show me the way to reach my ideal. You who give the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank You for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from You no matter how great the material desire may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual glory. Amen. Person must pray this 3 consecutive days without stating one’s wish. After the 3rd day your wish will be granted no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish this as soon as your favor has been granted. T.D.
