simply the best By Richard Carrier The Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Academy football program traditionally has difficulty putting enough players in uniform to have eleven-on-eleven practices. The locker room is so small the players have to suit up in shifts. The head coach takes on the task of lining the field, scheduling games and building a weight room while building a reputation for fielding hard-nosed, wellcoached and perpetual contenders for State Championship honors. Coach Mike Henderson enters his 12th season as leader of the Knights football team this season. Admitting that he was not qualified for the job when hired, Henderson initially struggled with his own inexperience and limited resources. But by concentrating on teaching a core group of his younger players football fundamentals and working with a highly simplified offensive system, which stressed perfection in execution, he fielded backto-back State Championship teams after only five seasons. The Knights also put together a string of 23 straight conference wins. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s football program is now respected by all and feared by many in the Virginia Independent School League. Over the past twelve seasons Blessed Sacrament has been blessed with some superior athletes, but it is still the attention to fundamentals and Coach Henderson’s drive to make everyone who steps on to Bowers-Sowers field “be a football player” which has keyed the Knights success. Keeping the offensive and defensive schemes simple and basic has been the signature of BSH football and wisely so. An injury to a key player can put an unprepared squad on the ropes. BSH stresses and depends on effective line

BSH head coach shuns complicated schemes, maintains a focus on perfecting the basics

play, making the loss of a front line running back less devastating. Simplicity was also the key in 2006, when Mike Allen took over at quarterback, a position he had never played and led the Knights to a 7-4 season. Coach Henderson said the offense ran only “five or six different plays.” They simply ran them perfectly. Mike Allen was just one of the truly gifted athletes to play on Academy Road; he is now a scholarship wide receiver at James Madison University. He was also on of several brother acts to star at BSH, preceded by his brother Noah. The Konvicas were the first brother tandem to play for BSH, followed by the immensely talented Pleasants twins. Daniel Bendele passed the fullback mantle to his younger brother Ryan and now supervises him as an assistant coach. The Trainums and the Smiths are next in line to make their mark on the program. Drew Walker may have been the best running back ever at BSH, and will probably always be recognized as one of the school's best players, period. And of course, there was Kyle Jolly, perhaps the best all-around football player ever produced in Powhatan County. But ultimately it has been the Gabe Wards, Ben Ottleys, Kevin Howards, Andy Purvises and Perry Woodards who have written the identity of the Blessed Sacrament football program: hard-nosed, fundamentally sound football players straight out of the Coach Henderson mold. They played the game hard, even furiously, but fairly. The down side of developing all of these young Knights into football players capable of being perennial State Championship contenders is that Blessed Sacrament can no longer fly under the radar. Opposing coaches

highlight their dates with the Knights and game plan for a formidable opponent. They know they will face a well prepared team that will execute as well as available personnel will allow. This season it appears that the big question in personnel is who will fill the running back slot. A quick check of the incoming roster reveals no Walkers, Allens or Smiths but the fun part is to sit back and see what juggling act the coaches will do either in personnel or offensive schemes to take maximum advantage of the resources available. Will the coaching staff once again pull the rabbit out of the hat? Don’t bet against it. And never bet against the increasingly strong support of the Blessed Sacrament fan base. There really is nothing quite like Friday night football at Bowers-Sowers field. Knights on horseback, Delegate Lee Ware announcing the play by play, Mr. Brown acting as spotter and the sage arbiter of all things involving penalties, fans on blankets spread over the hill, a dozen enthusiastic cheerleaders and one miniature, cow-bell-ringing fan announcing “its another Knight first down.” Then, of course, there's the incongruous Notre Dame Fight Song making for a totally unique and unforgettable experience. Whether cause and effect or effect and cause, the support and enthusiasm for BSH football has grown along with the success of the program. Coach Henderson credits the Administration’s support and patience as a major factor in allowing the program to flourish and he recognized the growing fan support over the years. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Football, the coaches who coach it and the kids who immerse themselves in it are, indeed, something special.

2007 S EASON RECAP

AUGUST 24, 2007 BSH 35 Kenston Forest 7 The 2007 first edition of Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Knights’ Football Tradition, which traveled to Kenston Forest on August 24, read just like its author’s pre-publication press release. “We will be as good as our offensive line,” head football coach Mike Henderson had predicted. “Matt Smith will surprise a lot of people. He will be our work-horse.” Ben Ottley, J.T Colvin, Josh Price, Glen Newlin, Neal Bass and Russ Leboff punched holes in the Kavaliers’ line allowing three Knights running backs, Smith, Jared Sebia and Aaron Johnson, to roll up 215 yards on just 27 carries. Smith led the pack with 135 on 15 carries in the 35-7 win. The Knights iced the game with the opening drive of the second half. The football never saw

sky as Smith, Sebia, Johnson and Leboff tucked it in on nine successive running plays. The 75-yard drive culminated when Smith bolted through the Kavaliers’ right side, cut left and, showing surprising speed, covered the final eleven yards to the end zone. Sophomore Johnson, who also showed he could do some sticking from his line-backer position, got the honors on the Knights’ final scoring drive, plunging in from the one. SEPT. 7, 2007 BSH 44 Tidewater Academy 8 Statistics can be very misleading. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s emerging star running back Matt Smith’s nine carries resulted in a season-low 89 yards against Tidewater Academy Sept. 7. Second team back Ryan Bendele was the Knights’ second leading rusher with 48.

Head coach Mike Henderson’s strategy of opening up the passing game resulted in just three receptions for 29 total yards, while Tidewater’s Chris Grammer threw for over a hundred yards. But, on the scoreboard, BSH led the Warriors 34-0 at the half, turned the game over to the second and third team players in the second, and cruised to a 44-8 victory in Wakefield to go 3-0 for the season. Comfortably ahead by halftime, head coach Mike Henderson took the opportunity to test the entire Blessed Sacrament bench. Brandon Holt ran the offense and shared the backfield with Chris Howard and Ryan Bendele. Bendele ripped off the run of the evening when he busted through the line, broke a tackle, shook off two more and scampered straight down the center of the field for a 49 yard score. “A lot of young kids got to play and played well,” Henderson

stated. He feels his 2007 Knights are well on their way to being “the toughest, most physical and classiest team in the V.C.C.” SEPT. 21 BSH 7 Greenbrier Christian 24 The Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Knights stepped off their bus on Sept. 21, went through their warm ups, received the opening kickoff and immediately took control of the Greenbrier Gators. Unfortunately, after a brutal game that saw several Knights leave the field with injuries, the BSH team relinquished the lead to Greenbrier in the final minutes. “We played hard the entire game, but not always smart” said head coach Mike Henderson. “There were times we lost our composure,” he CONTINUED ON 26

added. “Turnovers gave them the short field far too many times.” Henderson was guarded concerning the physical losses but he admitted that he and the coaching staff had scrambled to put a team on the field late in the game. “We lost our starting running back, our full back and our back up full back, our tight end and his back up. It’s hard to anticipate all of these things happening at one time.” OCT. 12, 2007 BSH 14 Fuqua 17 “It was a great high school football game between two very good football teams,” said BSH head coach Mike Henderson his team’s 17-14 home loss to Fuqua Academy on Oct. 12. Still, the fact that the loss had virtually eliminated the Knights from the conference playoffs was a difficult pill to swallow. “I don’t know what to say. It’s tough,” said Henderson. “It hurts.” The Knights opened the game looking like a precision machine. Sophomore Chris Howard took the opening kickoff at his eight yard line and danced out to the forty. He took the first snap from scrimmage and followed a crushing block by J.T Colvin for a 13-yard gain. The Knights would score on that drive to take the lead, but couldn’t completely stifle the Fuqua offense led by 226-pound fullback Bobby Newman. The teams ended the first half tied at 7. Connor Paul would cross the goal line in the fourth for the Knights, but Fuqua tacked on another two touchdowns to take the win.

OCT. 26, 2007 BSH 10 Roanoke Catholic 7 The Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Knights took the long bus ride to Roanoke on Oct. 26, knowing their chance of making it to the postseason depended upon three factors: they would have to take out the favored Roanoke Catholic Celtics, knock off 73 Southampton in the final regular season game the following week and ultimately depend on Massanutten Academy losing their final game. The Knights solved leg one of the three phased equation by beating the Celtics 10-7. It took two overtimes to do it. Although there was not a heavy rain during the game, the field was muddy and the light but steady rain dictated a controlled ground attack for the Knights. Predictably, both teams went through the first quarter just feeling each other out. On the only big play of the game for the Knights, fullback Jared Sebia got loose on a 44-yard scamper and found the end zone in the second quarter. Thomas Young’s point after was good at 7-0 BSH.

football game, ever. Across the field, the 7-3 Southampton Academy Raiders stood poised to end the Knights’ season and their hopes for another state championship. A win by the favored Raiders would advance them into the playoffs and the Knights would be done. Running back Matt Smith was suited up after a six-week lay-off, but would he play? If he did, would he be the highlight runner who had propelled BSH to three season opening victories? It took less than one quarter of football for Matt Smith and all of his teammates to resoundingly resolve all of these issues. “We made a commitment two weeks ago to go back to who we are,” said head coach Mike Henderson, and the Knights did just that, smashing their way to a 42-7 win over Southahmpton. Coach Henderson gave a rare game ball to Matt Smith (12

carries for 102 yards) with the suggestion he cut it up in pieces for his lineman and fullback. He then challenged his team to “face the major, major challenge of the play-offs. Make a two week commitment to be what you are and who you are.” NOV. 9, 2007 BSH 7 Isle of Wight 25 Facing a tough Raiders team that was coming off back-toback State Championships, the BSH team struggled to find its footing during the Nov. 9 championship semi-final game. The Knights, who had lost to the Raiders in the teams' regular season match up, had opportunities to change the outcome of the game but would ultimately see their season end that night.

Lawrence Barden

Painting - Wall Covering Specialty Coatings

The two squads engaged in what Coach Mike Henderson termed “a punt fest” for most of the remainder of regulation and the Knights smothered the final Roanoke attempt in the second overtime to keep their season alive.
