PREPARING YOUR CHILDREN FOR BACK-TO-SCHOOL SEASON

Fall 2020

Simpson, a pediatric emergency medicine physician and medical director for emergency preparedness at Children’s National Hospital. “Explaining these precautions ahead of time can help your children see them as part of the school day routine instead of something to fear. For parents, remember that while children can get sick from this virus, it occurs less frequently than in adults and at lower rates than the flu.” CELEBRATE THE START OF A NEW SCHOOL YEAR

Try to plan a special activity or some extra family time the week before school starts and encourage your child to participate in the planning. “Remember, children didn’t have time for a clean break and celebration at the end of the last school year, and this can help your child mentally adjust to a new routine and schedule,” Yalow said. Let your child know how proud you are to see him or her growing up, learning how to be a good friend and exploring and learning about the world. Be sure to talk with your child each school day - what was learned, funny things friends said, the things that seem little but are important to your child. For more tips about how to help your child prepare for the new school year, visit kindercare.com. #15323 • Source: KinderCare

(Family Features) Between sheltering-in-place, online learning and time away from friends, many children will need a little extra support as they head back to school this fall. Consider these tips from the experts at KinderCare to help you emotionally prepare your children to return to school with confidence, optimism and excitement. ADDRESS YOUR FEELINGS (AND THEIRS)

Children often take cues about how to react from their parents. Think about what it takes for you to feel calm and prepared (or even excited) for the start of a new school year. That could mean talking with your child’s teacher or school about the safety precautions they’re taking so you can feel more at ease, taking a few minutes to establish a morning routine or stepping away from news that makes you anxious. Focus instead on the positive aspects of school, like the opportunity your child will have to learn, make friends, interact with others and grow into his or her own person. “Children need a sense of belonging, and school provides an important connection point for them,” said Dr. Elanna Yalow, chief academic officer for KinderCare Learning Centers. “Nothing builds a sense of community like personal contact with friends and teachers. That connection is essential in supporting a child’s growth and development.” SET EXPECTATIONS ABOUT WHAT TO EXPECT BEFORE THE FIRST DAY

Some children may feel ready to go and eager to explore, while others can be more reserved or even fearful of new places, faces and routines. When your child knows what to expect, it can go a long way in soothing any worries he or she may have about leaving home and going to school. It’s also important to respect your child’s growing independence and empower him or her to help others. As you explain safety precautions like covering the mouth when sneezing or coughing, or proper hand washing, emphasize how your child’s actions can help keep family, friends and teachers safe. “Children may already be apprehensive about returning to school, let alone trying to cope with new safety practices,” said Dr. Joelle

EASY WAYS TO CONSERVE ENERGY

• Keep your air conditioning thermostat no lower than 78 degrees on hot days.

Start with these easy steps that may reduce your energy costs, improve your comfort, and allow you to do your part when the state is experiencing energy shortages.

• During cold days and nights, set your heating thermostat no higher than 60 degrees.

• Use nonessential applicances such as clothes washers and dryers during off-peak hours (between noon or after 6:00 p.m.)

• Dirty coils on the back or bottom front of your refrigerator can make it work harder than necessary. Check and clean the coils regularly, especially during the summer. See your appliance owner’s manual for maintenance instructions.

• Close drapes and blinds to keep out direct sunlight during hot periods. • Avoid using evaporative coolers or humidifiers at the same time an air conditioning is running. • Run swimming pool equipment for the minimum amount of time, and during off-peak hours (before noon or after 6:00 p.m.). • Limit the opening of a refrigerator. • Stop hot, outdoor air from entering your home and eliminate the loss of cooled air with weather stripping and caulking around windows and doors. • Clean or replace your air conditioner’s filter regularly to help it run more effectively.

THE BENEFITS OF ACCENT LIGHTING

by Decorating Den Interiors, Sally Giar

Fixing up your room with new furniture, decor and other accessories will put you on the right track to a successful makeover, but accent lighting can bring the theme together and make the space feel complete. Whether you’re interested in wall sconces, floodlights, recessed lights or tracking lighting, there are dozens of options to choose from that can cater to the look you’re going for. Best of all, as simple as accent lighting may be, it can make a large impact on the overall feel of the room. 1. IT MAKES A STUNNING FOCAL POINT Turn your guests’ heads as they enter the room with the perfect accent lighting. Certainly, the point of this fixture is to focus light on another area or object, but it can be an attraction zone on its own. 2. IT CAN ACCENTUATE YOUR WALL DECOR Or, if you want the room to revolve around a certain piece of wall decor, accent lighting can make this happen. Relying on overhead lighting or floor lamps to bring attention to decorations doesn’t work well because it isn’t focused in on them. With accent lighting, the fixture can hug your wall decor effortlessly. 3. IT CAN IMPROVE THE ATMOSPHERE IN YOUR ROOM If you’re looking for a subtle way to set the right tone in the room, accent lighting can do the job for you. This especially holds true if you’re interested in dimmers – lights that can dim and brighten manually – as they can transform a room from dark and romantic to cozy and welcoming. 4. IT’S THE PERFECT YEAR-ROUND DECOR PIECE Many of your pieces of decor likely have a timestamp – they’re either out for one season or seemingly dull halfway through the year. Accent lighting, however, can make the perfect decoration yearround. Talk with a professional about what style of fixture would look best in your room, regardless of the time of year.

• Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents. These come in various shapes and sized that fit regular, screw-in lamps and light fixtures, can last up to 10 times as long as old-fashioned bulbs, and produce less heat while using only a quarter of the electricity. • Insulate your hot water piping from the water heater to the wall or ceiling pipe penetration. Wrap the tank in an insulating blanket if the water heater’s energy factor is less than 0.59. Remember to follow the installation instructions. 4. THERE ARE SO MANY STYLES As stated earlier, there are ample styles of accent lighting fixtures to choose from. This allows you to be versatile and make the best decisions based on the atmosphere you’re trying to evoke. Moreover, consider getting in contact with a design consultant from Decorating Den Interiors. He or she can come over to your home and provide a free consultation to properly assess the space and offer design suggestions. This educated assistance can help you make the best decision toward sprucing up your space.

HOW TO CLEAN UP YOUR SUMMER GRILLING GAME (Family Features) There’s something about summertime that ushers in an easygoing spirit. The long, hot summer months are often celebrated with backyard barbecues, beach days and spending time with friends and family. It’s a time to fire up the grill, slow down and roll with the punches. So, when you’re thinking about what to feed your family off the grill, it should be a breeze, and you shouldn’t have to choose between good and good for you. Next time you turn on your grill, consider these tips for creating healthier, flavorful meals you can feel confident serving. Skip the complicated recipes that call for a wide variety of ingredients, a multitude of steps and long cook times. Instead, seek out products and dishes that are made with ingredients you recognize and have just a handful of instructions. This will ensure less time in the kitchen and more time with loved ones. KEEP IT SIMPLE.

Get inspired by your local farmer’s market. One of the best parts about summer is the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables that can add flavor and nutrients to your plate. Plant-based meat, like the burgers, ground and sausages from Lightlife, are also a healthier swap for traditional animal meat products. The pea protein-based product line features only simple ingredients, like pea protein, beet powder and red bell pepper, and are non-GMO, gluten-free and soy-free, perfect for use in recipes like this Burger with Grilled Pineapple and Honey Garlic Barbecue Sauce. FOCUS ON SEASONAL, CLEAN INGREDIENTS.

“I know how hard it can be to create fast and flavorful meals that the entire family will love,” said Dan Curtin, president of Greenleaf Foods. “That’s why we’re focused on making delicious food with the cleanest ingredients possible. The fact that they’re all plant-based is just a bonus.” DON’T FORGET THE SIDES. Food should be a source of confidence, with everything enjoyed in moderation. To balance your spread of burgers and hot dogs, consider serving fresh asparagus or sweet corn in place of other salty, processed options. Fruits like peaches and pineapple work well on the grill, too, but remember to group produce by similar cooking times. AIM FOR A QUICK AND FUN CLEANUP. Perhaps one of the most overlooked secrets to a stress-free meal is to cut down on cleanup. A backyard barbecue can be one of the easiest messes to maintain as most of the prep is done outside on the grill. Try setting up a buffet line on your deck or patio where your family can build their burgers with customized toppings, like cheese, veggies and sauces. Then add a little bit of fun by putting on your favorite music playlist to help make a simple, everyday meal feel even more special.

SAFE ENTERTAINING TIPS IN A COVID-19 WORLD

5

THINGS YOU CAN DO TO RELIEVE STRESS 1. TAKE TIME FOR YOU! Ask yourself, “Am I giving too much to others and not enough for myself? Do I need to take time to care for myself?” If the answer is “yes,” then refuse to feel guilty about it and just do it! If you feel guilty when you relax and do something you enjoy, chances are you will stop doing it. Ultimately, you lose. You may be living your life through other people’s standards and expectations. Take control of your guilt-producing thoughts and tell yourself “It is okay and good for you to take time for myself.” Focus on the benefits to you and your family when you are a more relaxed and energized person. 2. GO TO LUNCH AND DON’T RUSH Take a long lunch break several times a week. Don’t do business. Be a friend to someone. Volunteer your time to a good cause. Read a novel over a cup of tea. Go to a museum. Sit quietly by a stream. Eat slowly. Try a new restaurant or a new recipe at home. Go out with a good friend and agree not to discuss problems or business.

(eLivingtoday.com) Depending on where you live, restrictions on social gatherings may become less strict in the coming weeks and months. However, many experts caution that care should still be exercised when groups of people gather. After an extended period without social contact, it’s only natural to crave some interaction, and there’s evidence that doing so can be advantageous for your mental health. However, taking precautions to protect your physical health, along with your guests’, can make for a more enjoyable event. KEEP IT CONTAINED. Limit your gatherings to a few close friends or family members so if someone does get sick, contact tracing is a simple task. Keep in mind the number of same-household families you invite is more important than the number of people in that family. For example, one family of six that has already been living in close quarters poses a lower risk than three couples living in separate houses. Also be mindful of your guests’ approach to prevention; if they’ve been less cautious than your family or vice versa, there’s room for conflict and anxiety. CELEBRATE OUTDOORS. Indoor event spaces naturally have less circulation, meaning potential airborne particles hang around longer. Planning your gathering outdoors helps ensure more free-moving fresh air and more space for guests to spread out and practice social distancing. ENCOURAGE GUESTS TO BRING THEIR OWN. It may go against all your good hosting inclinations but hosting a bring-your-own party eliminates shared food and the risk of cross-contamination. You can provide disposable table service (plates, silverware and napkins) and single-serve beverages, but skip the cooler everyone reaches into. PROVIDE AMPLE, WELL-SPACED SEATING . Encourage guests to keep some distance from one another by creating comfy seating arrangements. You can take it a step farther by asking guests to bring their own chairs and directing each family to set up its space a reasonable distance from the next. MAKE CLEANLINESS A PRIORITY. Create stations with hand sanitizer or wipes. You can also create a makeshift sink to minimize trips to the restroom indoors. Provide a spray bottle or bucket, soap and paper towels near the hose for quick clean-ups.

SMART ADVICE TO BUILD YOUR OWN BUSINESS (Family Features) For many, traveling offers an opportunity to(Family Features) With many tools and resources available, it is easy for entrepreneurs to build successful businesses. The United States has somewhere around 27 million entrepreneurs, and 69% of them started their businesses at home, according to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor report from researchers at Babson College and Baruch College. If you’re considering becoming your own boss, consider learning from those who have successfully navigated the path before you. For example, entrepreneur Russell Brunson started his first online company while he was in college. Today, he is the co-founder of ClickFunnels, a successful software company that helps entrepreneurs get their messages out to the marketplace quickly and efficiently. Brunson is also the author of a series of books, including “Traffic Secrets,” which is filled with tips for blending fundamental direct-marketing techniques with new-age growth-hacking to help future customers discover products, services and drive demand. “Every year, tens of thousands of businesses start and fail because the entrepreneurs don’t understand one essential skill: the art and science of getting people to find you,” Brunson said. Put your entrepreneurial dreams in motion with Brunson’s advice, adapted from “Traffic Secrets,” the third installment in his bestselling trilogy. FIND A PROVEN BUSINESS MODEL There’s no need to reinvent the wheel. Many entrepreneurs have already blazed trails, run tests and figured out what kind of online marketing models work. If you can find someone who’s succeeding at doing what you want to do, then put a fresh spin on their methods. IDENTIFY YOUR DREAM CUSTOMER After you’ve chosen your online marketing model, work to identify your dream customers. The better you understand your potential customers, the easier it can be to find where they congregate online, understand their wants and needs, and attract them to your product or service with organic and paid campaigns.

BUILD YOUR SALES FUNNEL Using his success with ClickFunnels as evidence, Brunson advocates using online sales funnels to build business and revenue. The basic sales funnel begins with a low-risk offer, captures shipping and payment information, offers an upsell and concludes with a simple confirmation. GROW TRAFFIC AND COLLABORATE Learn where your dream customers hang out online. Make a list of at least 100 people who own those channels, blogs and podcasts. Build relationships with those influencers with the goal of pitching collaborative opportunities that benefit both of your businesses. “If you are selling anything online, or trying to generate leads online, no matter what industry you’re in, these 20 traffic secrets can help attract more eyeballs,” Brunson said. “I’d like to help you fill your website and funnels with your dream customers, so I’m going to give you my new book for free. Just visit grabtrafficsecrets. com.”

5 WAYS TO DRIVE TRAFFIC ON SOCIAL MEDIA These strategies from “Traffic Secrets” can help drive traffic using these major platforms: Google: Search the keyword you’d like to rank for. Scan results, looking for sites that have ads, banners, affiliate links to products or subscription boxes. Contact the owners of those pages and ask about advertising options to buy your way in and build your list. YouTube: Create a 15-second intro with a catchy hook followed by a short 4-second branded message then tell your viewer why he or she should listen. Create a connection with personal commentary and share valuable content for the next 7-12 minutes. Close with a call to action. Facebook: Think of your cover photo as your billboard and the intro section as your business card where you can place links to funnels. When posting, share stories that can open conversations, and remember to engage readers in the comments. Instagram: Decide whether you want to inspire, educate or entertain then create a caption. Three effective options: tell a story, ask a question or make a list. Podcasting: In addition to working the podcast circuit and delivering a call to action at the end of each show, you can leverage influencers in other ways. Buy ads on their podcasts and arrange guest appearances that let you ask their listeners to check out your own podcast. MAX OUT YOUR METABOLISM! Do you have one of those friends...the kind who can eat (and eat and eat) all they want and never gain weight? It’s called metabolism and everyone’s is a little bit different. Rarely, a thyroid defect can slow your metabolism, but for most of us losing and maintaining a healthy weight is just a matter of finding our own delicate balance of calories in vs. calories out. But there are a few tricks to revving up your own metabolism to help you lose weight a little more quickly. In fact, did you know that if you’re overweight, chances are your metabolism is already going at top speed? That’s why it’s easy to lose weight so quickly when you start a diet, but not as easy as you reach your goal weight. To keep your metabolism going strong, try these tricks: 1. EXERCISE: Aerobic

exercise boosts your metabolism for a short while, and building muscle means you’ll be burning more calories all the time, even when you’re at rest. By eating several small meals throughout the day, you keep your body’s furnace burning. Skip meals on a regular basis and your body will start hanging on to those calories when it finally gets them. 2. EAT LESS, MORE OFTEN:

Though some foods have shown potential to speed weight loss (like green tea and red pepper), researchers aren’t sure. 3. DON’T FALL FOR FOOD FADS:

WHEN TREATING A HEART ATTACK OR STROKE, TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE. EVEN DURING THESE TIMES. Don’t hesitate when it comes to getting emergency treatment.

Even during a pandemic, you still need to be treated immediately if you have an emergency. Debating whether or not to risk going to an emergency room during a heart attack, stroke or other health emergency—waiting even a few extra minutes—could be harmful. That’s why in all BayCare hospital emergency rooms, patients who have symptoms of COVID-19 are isolated from other patients. This helps keep emergency room patients and our team members safe.
