Outstanding Volunteer: John Brown Last year, the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce created a new award to be given to an “Outstanding Volunteer” in our community. The award is given to an individual who has given community service on a volunteer basis. This year’s award goes to Mr. John Brown. John Brown spent 35 years in California in a career of public service. He was a fireman, policeman and EMT. After retiring and moving to Tooele 5 years ago, you would think that he would enjoy his retirement just relaxing and spending time with his family. Not John Brown! He immediately went to work as a volunteer in several capacities. He joined the Tooele Valley Rotary Club and the Kiwanis Club of Tooele. He has served as the Kiwanis Club president and currently holds the position of Lt. Governor for Division 2 of the Utah Idaho District. He serves as the Kiwanis liaison for the Tooele Club to the Grantsville Key Club, Grantsville Jr. High Builders Club and the Tooele High School Key Club. As the youth participate in public service and fundraising efforts, John works right along side them and encourages their efforts. John has spent his own time and money to become a tax preparer for the Volunteer

Income Tax Assistance program, which helps seniors and those in need, prepare their income tax each year. John spent 40 hours in training to become an John Brown advocate for the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Victims Advocacy group here in Tooele. He serves as an advocate for the 24 hour crisis line and help victims escape the dangerous situation they may be in and is also certified to counsel victims. When John is made aware of a community project, such as cleaning up the canyons with Tracks, he is right there to help in any way possible. John is the husband of Louise Brown (who is a giving volunteer in her own right) and the proud father of two beautiful daughters. The Tooele County Chamber of Commerce is proud to honor John Brown as this year’s Volunteer of the Year!

Depot impacts Utah economy through local contracts TOOELE ARMY DEPOT, Utah – Tooele Army Depot’s (TEAD) fiscal year ended with a total of $10.3 million in contracts made to local Utah firms. The depot’s operating budget for FY 2008 increased by $1.53 million over the previous fiscal year, primarily due to increased maintenance, storage and logistical support of ammunition and equipment sent to military forces around the world. “As a major power projection ammunition depot for the Department of Defense, we’re delighted to see increases in operations as it directly effects growth both inside and outside the depot,” said Colonel Yolanda Dennis-Lowman, TEAD commander. “Also, the funding used to contract services and support provides many businesses more employment opportunities for people throughout Utah.” The average salary for a single depot employee, some with highly technical background that include engineering, was

$52,784. The family median income in Tooele County is $54,890, meaning that a single employee working at TEAD makes almost equivalent of the median income for an entire family. Total labor expenses at TEAD for FY 2008 were $39.1 million. “The salaries our employees take home

have an even greater impact on economic development as they shop for goods and services,” said Colonel Dennis-Lowman. Counties of residence for TEAD employees include Tooele County at 74 percent, Salt Lake County at 15 percent and other counties totaling 11 percent. In FY 2009, leaders at the depot are looking to increase operations, projecting growth of $2.62 million. Officials attribute this growth to the increased need for the depot’s specialized experience in the development of ammunition-related equipment, increased strategic partnerships and enhanced efficiencies. “We’re pursuing a very proactive approach to our business development opportunities for this fiscal year,” said Colonel Dennis-Lowman. “The depot’s success has been clearly tied to the growth within Tooele County and the entire state of Utah. I look forward to continuing our work with local, regional and state repre-

sentatives to pursue this growth and make this fiscal year even better than the last.” About TEAD: The Tooele Army Depot was established in 1942 as the Tooele Ordnance Depot, and for more than 65 years it has committed itself to readiness and rapid munitions response for America’s allies and warfighters. TEAD provides storage, maintenance and logistics capability under the Army’s Joint Munitions Command (JMC). The depot specializes in providing services in ammunition equipment prototype design, development, fabrication and fielding. The depot also develops innovative Ammunition Peculiar Equipment (APE) used for demilitarization, as well as completes renovation, modification, modernization and maintenance of conventional-type munitions. stallation banquet in January and was honored to have Chad Hymas, inspirational speaker, present a special message to those in attendance. Chad stressed the “value in giving” and reminded each one of us the importance of remembering that we are here to serve others. Chad told us that we all have the ability to get “out of our comfort zones” and help each other. Chad donated several of his best selling books, DVD’s and CD’s; to auction off to the banquet attendees, with all proceeds going to local charities. Over $1,200 was collected from generous bidders to be donated to the Alpine Academy in Erda, the Tooele County Children’s Justice Center, the Tooele Valley Community Cooperative and others. Thanks Chad, for your generous donation… for sharing the important reminder that we should all remember to serve others… and for helping others in our community. The local Tooele Denny’s Restaurant participated in a nationwide promotion on Tuesday, February 3rd to give a free “Grand Slam” breakfast to any person between 6 am and 2pm. The Tooele location received an overwhelming response! Not only did they serve over 1,200 free breakfasts (which included 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, 2 sausages and 2 slices of bacon); Chad Fullmer, local store owner; passed out “rain checks” to over 1,500 individuals who didn’t have time to wait in line! What a great way to promote good customer service! The local Denny’s restaurant is a huge

Roger Ekins volunteers as the Cub Scout Roundtable Commissioner for the Deseret Peak District of the Boy Scouts of America. In this role, he provides training to assist the leaders in planning and providing a quality experience for the Cub Scouts. In addition to his duties as a firefighter, he is also an EMT, working as many as 100 hours a month for the Tooele Ambulance Service. Roger is an Operations Foreman and Site Trainer for the EMT group at the EnergySolutions Clive Facility where he’s worked for the past 16 years. Because EnergySolutions has a fully-equipped ambulance at Clive, the EnergySolutions

EMT’s are often asked to assist Wendover and Tooele Ambulance services when accidents occur on I-80. Roger and his fellow EMT’s have been instrumental in Roger Ekins saving the lives of several accident victims in the past few years. In spite of his modesty about the many hours of valuable service he graciously gives, he truly is a solution in the community. We are proud to have Roger as an EnergySolutions employee.

Healthier employees lower insurance costs, provide happier workplace by Luz Robles, Director of the Zions Business Resource Center The increasingly high cost of insuring employees and their families has pushed many employers to take different approaches and use incentives to encourage employees to live healthier lifestyles. The following are a few methods you can use to encourage your employees to live more healthfully: • Pay or share the cost of gym memberships—This method usually works best when you have a small number of employees and limited space in your facility. Other companies have taken efforts to the next level by providing a gym on-site and offering enough schedule flexibility so employees and their families can take advantage of the facilities. • Offer fitness classes during the work day—Invite instructors from local colleges, universities or fitness centers to showcase classes on aerobics,

yoga, relaxation or other types of exercise. Provide healthy foods in the break room—Encourage employees to eat more healthfully by stocking fruits, vegetables and healthy snacks rather than junk food. This will help employees develop better eating habits. Allow break time—In the spring and fall - Allow for two 15-minute breaks per day for your employees to take a walk. Supply information—Call your local health department to get free information about healthy lifestyles and distribute that information in your workplace. Hold an annual or semiannual health fair—This is another opportunity to partner with your local health department and other institutions that can provide presenters and information. It might be wise to choose a non work day to do this. Make a point to invite employees’

Business Spotlight:

Syracuse Casting West Written by Gloria Kershaw We have chosen to put the spotlight on Syracuse Casting this month. Syracuse Casting, an aluminum & steel fabricating company, specializes in manufacturing Access Hatches. With their state of the art manufacturing facility, innovative products, and their amazing team, they are committed to creating a safer public world through the best product designs, manufacturing and service. I had the honor of having a personal tour of their facility with the general manager, Craig Anderson. Mr. Anderson is a former truck driver for the New York based Syracuse Casting Company and says he’s been blessed with the opportunity of being part owner of the Tooele based company. The Tooele Company distributes their products to the 11 western states, as well as Hawaii and Alaska. They ship internationally as well. His message to all chamber members is “No matter how small we are, how limited our resources are, we all have the potential to make a difference in the lives of others. In the space of time we must recognize we are only temporary stewards of our

charges. As business decision makers, it is our responsibility to utilize our position to do all we can to make sure our companies have a positive impact on the lives of others. We must use our businesses as tools through which God’s blessings will flow to others.” Mr. Anderson feels very blessed to work with the people in his company. He explains to his employees on a daily basis that what they do at Syracuse Casting is not all about manufacturing access hatches but it is about the difference they are making in the world and the positive effect they are making on the lives of others. Syracuse Casting recently finished manufacturing products to help supply fresh drinking water for residents in Guinea, Africa. “To think that in Africa, a product that we manufactured here in Tooele to help them have fresh drinking water has a stamp on it that says- Tooele, Utah.” Syracuse Casting is dedicated to make a difference and looks forward to other amazing opportunities that may come their way. To learn more about Syracuse Casting check out their website www.syrcast.com.
