Business Spotlight:

Sears by: Gloria Kershaw

Tooele residents now have a new place to go for all their home appliance needs. The new Sears Authorized Dealer store has moved into the neighborhood. This innovative business has made a home next to Big 5 Sporting Goods in a newly constructed 17,000 sq ft building in the Tooele downtown area. The Sears store uses 6,000 sq ft of this structure. The downtown Main Street location was chosen because the owners wanted to be part of the strength and excitement that downtown Tooele is becoming once again. Sears is a beautiful site, inside and out! Brian Thomas, owner of the company, has had affection for Tooele for many years, dating back to when he was active with the Marine Corps in Tooele over 20 years ago. Brian was part of the team

of service men who traveled to Desert Storm after being stationed here at the Tooele Army Depot. Mr. Thomas is the owner of three Sears Authorized Dealer Stores, including the Tooele location, that he operates with the help of his Director of Operations, Phil Jackman.

The other two Sears stores are located in Clinton & Sandy, Utah. While considering choices for the location of the third store, he just knew it had to be in Tooele. see Spotlight page 6 ➤

EMPLOYEES OF THE MONTH Homebodies Furniture & Accessories would like to recognize all of its employees—Carolyn Dow, Ada Goodworth, Jessica Jaeger and Alissa Lund—for consistently doing an outstanding job. It’s vital for any business to have good people, and Homebodies is very fortunate to have these gals. Carolyn has been with the store since it opened in October 2005. Without her love and support, Homebodies would not have survived its early years. Thanks Carolyn! Ada has been with Homebodies since July 2006. She is kind, caring and hard working—just to name a few of her qualities. Plus, Ada has allowed Homebodies’ owners to have more time away from the store without worry. Thanks Ada!

Jessica joined the store in July 2008, and has quickly shown she’s a good fit with her sweet smile and eagerness to help. Thank you Jessi! Alissa came aboard in August 2007. She has proven that teenagers can make excellent employees. Her infectious go-getter attitude and friendly customer service is topnotch. Thanks Alissa! Thanks again to all the gals at Homebodies who help make this small store in our small town a huge success! The Tooele County Chamber of Commerce is proud to recognize these four fantastic employees from Homebodies, who serve the community and their customers with their great customer service!

Executive Director Message One of the ways that businesses “advertise” or “market” their stores or companies is with a sign. Chamber members have an important “sign” at their locations. This year’s sign is blue with gold lettering and says “Tooele County Chamber of Commerce Member 2009”. The “Tooele County Chamber of Commerce sign” is a sign of business commitment to Tooele Debbie Winn County, stellar customer service, unique shopping atmosphere, competitive prices, tax dollars that stay in the community, and investment in the local area by supporting our youth groups, ball teams, school functions, charitable and other local events. The most important sign is the commit-

ment to Tooele County. Chamber Members are committed to making Tooele County a great place to live. By supporting Chamber Members, you benefit as well. The more successful county businesses, the more it benefits the county residents. The money spent at local businesses stays in Tooele County, meaning we will have better roads, parks, police and fire services, utilities, and ultimately, a community with an improved quality of life. Where you see the “Tooele County Chamber of Commerce Signs” you will find local businesses that know what’s important to you. Just look for the sign at over 300 businesses in Tooele County.

March 2009

Chamber Welcomes Southridge Pediatric Dentistry Dr. David Roth and Dr. Russell Farnsworth are no strangers to Tooele County. When Dr. Roth first started his dental practice in South Jordan, he began looking at the need for a pediatric dentist in the Tooele area. The opportunity of serving this area’s residents appealed to him very much, and in 2000 he began leasing office space one day a month. He was joined in partnership by Dr. Russell Farnsworth in 2004, and “Southridge Pediatric Dentistry” was born. At that point, each doctor was visiting Tooele once a month, and from there the practice began to grow. With a limit to the amount of office space and time available to them, there became a need to build an office of their very own. Longtime patient and mother of four, Angela Kelley (Grantsville) said, “My kids aren’t scared when I tell them that it is time to go to the dentist. We see both Doctors and what I love about them is they are so patient. They take the time to explain to my kids every procedure they will be doing and tool they will be using. They really make it fun and they have a great staff.”

been practicing Dentistry since 1999. Dr. Roth and his wonderful wife, Katie, have five children, Christian, Spencer, Claire, Tanner, and Luke. He enjoys mountain climbing, skiing, and playing soccer. He has run several marathons and triathlons and recently received his pilot’s license. Dr. Russell W. Farnsworth completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Utah, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in German with a Minor in Chemistry. He also attended the University of Iowa, where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. He then attended Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, Texas, where he received his Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry. He has been practicing in South Jordan since 2004. Dr. Farnsworth has been supported throughout his training and practice by his wife, Kimberly, and their three (number four – a boy, is coming in March!) children, Joseph, Caroline and Elizabeth. He enjoys mountain biking, fly fishing and traveling. Dr. Roth and Dr. Farnsworth are both Diplomats of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. At Southridge Pediatric Dentistry, they are committed to providing children with a positive dental experience, and to providing parents with the tools and education to help their child maintain a healthy mouth. Tooele resident, Shelli Roberts

About the Doctors: Dr. David C. Roth received his Bachelor of Science degree at Brigham Young University. He attended the University of Iowa’s College of Dentistry where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. Dr. Roth did his residency in Utah at Primary Children’s Medical Center. He has

said, “We have been seeing both doctors since our oldest son was two, and they are both so great with my kids. I would never take them anywhere else.” She further went on to say that one of the things that she likes the most about both Dr. Roth and Dr. Farnsworth are that they are so good at explaining treatment and procedures to both her children and herself, which as a mom she feels is very important. The Doctors like to begin seeing patients about six months after their first teeth are in, which is younger than many would think. The reason for this is that they like to allow each child to become comfortable with the dental experience at his or her

own pace, educate their parents, and avoid any potential problems that could otherwise have been avoided. The overall well being of each patient as an individual is tremendously important to both Dr. Roth and Dr. Farnsworth. “We love Dr. Farnsworth. Not only is he a fabulous dentist, but a friend to our family. We are grateful for his knowledge and professionalism,” said Missy Lee of Tooele. Dr. Roth and Dr. Farnsworth are committed to offering optimal dental care for their patients. In addition to four years of Dental School, Pediatric Dentists comsee Southridge page 4 ➤

plete a two-year residency in order to be better educated in how to satisfy the needs of children. Both Dr. Roth and Dr. Farnsworth are uniquely trained to care for the oral health and dental development of infants, children, adolescents, as well as special needs patients. “Because of my son’s special needs going to the dentist is extra challenging for him,” said Michele Morrell of Stansbury Park. “We love Dr. Roth. He has so much compassion for kids. He is caring and gentle and patient. He understands that for children with special needs going to the dentist can be confusing. He is so soft-spoken and kind to my son, and because of that my son continues to make progress with every visit to the dentist. Every time we leave, he has to hug Dr.Roth - and he doesn’t hug people often. For kids with special needs, these guys are AWESOME!” Many children are anxious or nervous about dental treatment. Both Dr. Roth and Dr. Farnsworth have been trained to deal with high levels of emotion. Valori Layton, of Stansbury Park said, “Our daughter has really high anxiety. After trying three other pediatric dentists and having VERY traumatic outcomes, we found Dr. Roth. He was so good at building a relationship with my daughter and a level of trust. He made her very comfortable.” So comfortable, in fact, that Valori said that her daughter actually looked forward to going to the dentist again, which according to Valori was a HUGE step! A mother from Grantsville, Bethany Killian, said, “For a long time my kids dentist was their Grandpa and so they were very comfortable. When it came time to find a new dentist, they were afraid. Dr. Farnsworth is so great with them. He is very non-threatening and makes them feel so comfortable. He gets down on their level and talks to THEM and not just me.” While some children can be treated with traditional methods (watching a favorite movie, telling and showing what we are doing, and other distraction techniques) many will need other methods to help complete their dental treatment. At Southridge Pediatric Dentistry, they offer many options to help your child with his or her dental experience, from TV’s in the ceiling to several forms of sedation, including General Anesthesia. Before deciding on the best options for your child’s particular circumstance, the Doctors will go over each option and answer all of your questions. Their excellent front office staff has a combined 23 years of experience in the dental field and will assist you with your insurance company to help determine the best fit for your financial needs. About the Staff: Wendy McFarland (Office Manager) – Wendy began working in the dental field in 1983. After taking a six-year break in 1988 to be a stay at home mom, she returned to the dental field and has been working hard ever since. She began working with Dr. Roth and Dr. Farnsworth one day a week about four years ago. When they finished their office in November, hiring her to be the office manager was

Tooele County Chamber of Commerce a perfect fit. With her vast experience in dental treatment, insurance billing and patient relations, she is a wonderful addition to this office. Carla Elfors (Receptionist) – After being a stay at home mom for eighteen years, Carla found a great part time job in the dental field. She worked one day a week for the doctors of Southridge about three years ago, and increased that to three days with the opening of their new office in November. Great people skills and organizational skills are her strength. A great love for children and their well-being make this office just the place for her.

Sirena Riddle (Head Dental Assistant) – Serena joined the Southridge family in October after completing the Dental Assisting Program at Salt Lake Community College and graduating with a 4.0. As a mother of two, she knows the importance of quality care for your children. Cherise Herrera (Dental Assistant) – Cherise was trained by Dr. Roth and Dr. Farnsworth and has become a great dental assistant. Her natural ability to make children comfortable is a great asset to the office. Dr Roth and Dr. Farnsworth are so happy to be serving the residents of Tooele

March 2009 County. They love the beauty of valley, but most importantly, as Dr. Farnsworth put it, “There is a definite need here for Pediatric Dentistry, but it is really the quality of the people here that keeps us coming back.” They are located at 1959 N. Aaron Drive #E, in Tooele. They are in the office Monday through Thursday and some Fridays. To serve their patients needs, either Dr. Roth or Dr. Farnsworth will be available on a 24-hour emergency basis. Please call 435-882-9800 to make an appointment!

Now is a great time to buy a home by Vicki Griffith President, Tooele County Board of Realtors

If you’re ready to buy a home and can afford it, now is a great time to buy. Mortgage interest rates remain very low. In Tooele County, buyers have a lot of inventory from which to choose and long-term homeownership continues to be one of the best ways for the typical American to build wealth. Don’t let all of the negative media at-

tention about the “mortgage meltdown” keep you from pursuing your homeownership dream. Mortgage industry woes are primarily limited to subprime loans and other types of creative and comparatively risky financing products.(this was not prevelant in Tooele County). While the mortgage industry stalled briefly to reconsider its more exotic loans, there is plenty of conventional financing available for qualified homebuyers. Interest rates remain at historically low levels – still less

Big or Small. Every client is important to us!

than 5% for the typical, 30-year fixed-rate mortgage. A home buyer in Tooele County can still obtain 100% financing and also receive $8,000 cash back from Uncle Sam with the incentives from the Government. This $8,000 does not have to be paid back. Indeed, the market has changed. It’s gone from a frenzied seller’s market to calmer buyer’s market. In fact, buyers haven’t seen a market this strong in years. When the national median home price dropped for the first time on record, the decline made huge albeit misleading headlines. For starters, there is no such thing as a national real estate market. All real estate markets are local and driven by local factors that include the local economy, housing supply and demand factors and other attributes like geography. The slight decline followed years of unprecedented steep home price appreciation and the reality is that Tooele’s market realized a price per home increase, never a decrease. Corrections in markets that experienced exorbitant home price appreciation were expected and signal good news for buyers. . Right now there are many homes from which to choose and buyers don’t have to deal with the harried and hurried competition of multiple bids. The changing

market has also changed the inventory landscape to include fewer speculative sellers and a larger share of serious and motivated sellers. Prospective homebuyers have some time to shop inventory and thoroughly compare home types and prices, amenities, neighborhoods, commutes and other important real estate-related features. And buyers have stronger price negotiation power as sellers compete for their attention by offering concessions or other incentives. While all real estate markets have ups and downs, Americans continue to consistently build wealth through homeownership. According to the NAR: • One average, the value of a home doubles every 10 years. We have seen this in our valley. • The average homeowner today has 36 times the wealth of the average renter. Homeowners are essentially paying themselves when they pay their mortgages and this means they’re building equity. Homeowners also benefit from some real estate-related tax write-offs like mortgage interest. • Sixty percent of the average homeowner’s wealth is their home’s equity. For homeowners who’re in their homes for the long-term, home equity typically is their single largest source of wealth. Because every market is different, it’s a good idea for potential homebuyers to contact a local real estate specialist to learn more about what’s happening in his or her community and real estate market. The bottom line in real estate doesn’t change— if you’re ready to buy and can afford to make a long-term homeownership commitment, it’s always a good time to buy! Tooele County Business Resource Center by Nicole Cline, Tooele County Economic Development Director

We have worked for years and now it is only a couple of weeks away. What I am speaking about is the Tooele County Business Resource Center (BRC). The announcement has gone out to recruit for the BRC Director, and it is our hope to have them on board by the end of March, 2009. What is really good about this is that the program is fully funded by grants for the first year. But the BRC has to become self sufficient so that it serves the needs of all Tooele County residents and businesses without being a financial burden to the local governments. Whether you’ve started a business and want to get some counseling on a certain issue, or want to start a business, the BRC can provide services to help you. Some of the services are free and others at a low cost. Tooele County has contracted with the Miller Business Resource Center to insure that classes and certifications of the instructors are consistent with industry standards. They also have a pool of qualified councilors and instructors to draw from and that will make any course here in Tooele County the same as what you would find at their campus driving into Sandy, Utah. The BRC has local oversight as the selection of the programs offered are reviewed and approved

by the Tooele County Economic Development Advisory Committee. That way we can be sure to bring to Tooele County only those classes that people in Tooele County need. The Tooele County Business Resource Center is dedicated to helping new and small businesses achieve their goals of growth, expansion, innovation, increased productivity, management improvement and success. The BRC will work to promote and assist small businesses in all stages of their development. Experts in the field work in partnership with entrepreneurs to provide crucial information and support that can mean the difference between business success and failure. Services Include: • Confidential, one-on-one consulting in management, financing and marketing • Intensive business training seminars • Comprehensive entrepreneurial needs assessment • Assistance with access to capital • Marketing Research • New Business feasibility analysis • Business resource libraries with access to current business data, demographics, technological information and statistics • Government procurement, international trade and technology assistance

Denise Harvey, owner of Modern Victoria, speaks to Chamber members at the monthly Business After Hours event that was held at her business in February. Denise informed members about what her business has to offer her customers including; bridal and prom gowns, tuxedo rental, jewelry, shoes and anything else you may need for that special day. Denise’s personal and friendly service to each customer is a plan that other business owners should follow. Business After Hours is held the fourth Thursday of each month and is hosted by Chamber members. This networking opportunity is open to all Chamber members to distribute flyers, business cards, coupons, menus or other information to promote your business to other members.

The company displays a strong commitment to developing their workforce and a Utah economic development program has assisted Carlisle with just that through Custom Fit Training. Custom Fit encourages economic development by working with forprofit companies, large and small, and especially companies who are new to Utah or who are expanding, with their training needs. Custom Fit receives state funds that can be used to help pay for the cost of training employees. Custom Fit representatives Annie Burt and Joan Hill assisted Carlisle SnyTec to identify desired skills and expertise, related instructional programs and the best times and location for classes. So far, Custom Fit has provided over 600 hours of training in topics ranging from management and supervisory leadership to OSHA training. Annie works closely with the Carlisle management to make the best class arrangements for Carlisle employee’s schedules. Usually, Custom Fit pays for fifty percent of the training costs and the company pays the remainder. Since Custom Fit is administered through Salt Lake Community College, the company is assured of receiving the best training at the best price. The College can draw from its many degree and career programs, a talented faculty and respected trainers from any field for just the right training solution for the company. Joan says, “I have enjoyed working with the people at Carlisle and I am anxious to help many other Tooele companies to use Custom Fit as their training resource, especially in this critical business environment.”

Excelsior Academy: First charter school in Tooele Valley Excelsior Academy is a Utah Public Charter School devoted to excellence in education. Opening fall 2009, it will serve kindergarten through 8th grade. Excelsior Academy’s vision is to present a broad, classical education by basing its teachings around the Core Knowledge Sequence. In each grade students will be exposed to a broad range of historical, scientific, and cultural topics that will build on one another to prepare them for later educational success. The scope of knowledge comprises what a culturally literate individual should know at each grade level. The Core Knowledge Sequence has been aligned with the Utah State Core and meets or exceeds all of the standards put forth by the Utah State Office of Education.

An individualized academic plan will be created at each student’s level. The academic plan will be guided by regular assessments and then communicated with parents. In order to assist students with individual learning abilities, at their challenge level, teachers will have access to supplementary curriculums in Math, Language Arts and Reading, intervening with tutors in a tiered plan if necessary. Excelsior Academy’s goal of developing a life-long love of learning will be implemented through Club Time, which will take place the last hour of each full school day. Supervised by teachers, Club Time topics will be determined by the interests and skills of scholars, teachers and parents. Club Time may include yoga, chess, photography, astronomy,

foreign language, etc. Experienced and successful school director, Ernie Nix, will lead Excelsior. Mr. Nix states, “Having 13 years administrative experience at both the elementary and middle school levels uniquely qualifies me to lead a K – 8 school. In my previous positions I worked very closely with my staff and the parents of my students to make the difficult transition from elementary to middle school a positive and exciting experience for everyone. Excelsior Academy is being designed to facilitate small learning communities. Each scholar will be very well known by a small team of teachers that work in collaboration together to meet their needs. Excelsior Academy is located at 124 E.

Erda Way; drive by and watch the progress. Builders Peck and Ormsby have constructed this floor plan six times; the start date is well within the window of time necessary to finish the school. Progress of the campus will be featured on Excelsior’s website. Excelsior Academy is its own school district and reports directly to the state. The board of trustees has worked closely with the Utah State Board of Education to establish Excelsior. The board appreciates the encouragement and interest of families in the Tooele Valley, along with the support of the Tooele County School District. Tooele County recognized by Boy Scouts of America for contributions To The Honorable Commissioners of Tooele County, Utah and other friends of the Boy Scouts of America, we report the following: The Boy Scouts of America is an organization committed to making a difference in the lives of young people. Through the efforts of more than 1,830 dedicated volunteers in Tooele County and the support of religious and community organizations, the BSA reached more than 3,800 Tooele County youth in 2008, with its program of citizenship, mental and physical fitness, and strong moral character. Our Mission The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. We use numbers and statistics to measure our success in delivering the Scouting program. But those figures provide only a glimpse of the Scouting program. We do not want to present what Scouting is, but what Scouting does. Behind the numbers, you will find caring adult volunteers, families, and supporters giving their time and talents to build a better future one child at a time.

Service to Tooele County in 2008 The Boy Scouts of America not only aims to teach youth about honor, integrity and citizenship, but to also instill into the character of the youth we serve the joy of providing uncompensated service to individuals and other organizations. During 2008, our District participated in the annual “Scouting for Food campaign. Scouts collected over 36,500 items of non-perishable food that went directly onto the shelves of the local food bank. Scout age boys participated in a service project that brought new fire pits to county camp grounds and individual Boy Scout and Cub Scout units donated more than 50,000 man hours of service that provided a direct benefit to the Benson Grist Mill, the County Fire Museum, The Children’s Justice Center, Tooele County School District properties, many places of worship and the homes of widows and other individuals with a need. For example, Cub Scouts in Pack 4547 personally delivered fleece scarves to the elderly at Cottage Glen, meeting each resident and spending some time with them. Pack 4186 participated in a cleanup project around the Stansbury Park fire station. Boxes and bags full of blankets, coats, and warm clothing were collected and donated to the Community Relief Services by Pack 4854. Further, the Sage chapter of the EL-KUTA lodge (the Tooele County chapter of

The Order of the Arrow) sponsored an Ordeal in March 2008. The candidates and members performed several service projects throughout the community, totaling 450+ hours of service in one weekend. Accomplishments of Tooele County Scouts in 2008 During 2008, the Scout age youth of Tooele County, ages 11 – 18 earned more than 2,717 Merit badges, with 83 boys earning the Rank of Eagle Scout. Cub Scouts, boys ages 8 – 10, have earned the following awards: 265 Bobcats; 209 Wolfs; 179 Bears; 161

Webelos; and an impressive 147 Cub Scout boys earned the Arrow of Light. Goals for 2009 We promise the community leaders of Tooele County to continue the tradition of quality scouting in our local communities and to make a concerted effort to reach out to those not yet served by scouting. It will be our goal in 2009, to bring the ideals of scouting to the more than 2,000 youth in our county not yet associated with a Boy Scout unit. We also hope to surpass the number of service hours our units donate and make 2009 a memorable year.

At a six-month follow up with END (Ending Nicotine Dependence) participants, 8 of the 13 youth have remained tobacco free. At a 3-month follow up with participants from another class, 8 out of 10 youth remained tobacco free. The END program is a class for students who have a nicotine dependence. Although some students are required to attend, any student within the school district who is interested in ending their nicotine habit may contact Gayle or Melanie at 435-833-1900. ••••• The Tooele High School Water Polo Team will be “playing polo for food” at their upcoming water polo games. As a

The food will be donated to the Tooele County Food Bank. Watch the Transcript Bulletin for a schedule of water polo games. ••••• Mountain West Medical Center recently made a generous donation to Grantsville Jr. High School to purchase a portable defibrillator to meet the healthcare needs of a student.
