Tooele County Voters!

We now have the Primary Election under our belt’s, it’s time to elect the people you want to represent you for the next four years. To see the candidates that are running for each entity and find out more information on each of them please go to the County Clerk’s website at www.co.tooele.ut.us/clerk.htm, click on “Candidate Biographies”. You will be asked for your name, birth date and house number. This website will show that you’re registered, where your polling location is and show you a sample of the ballot for the general election. It will also allow you to click on each candidate’s name and read their biography, if they have submitted one.

Early Voting for the November 3rd Municipal General Election will run weekdays from October 20 - October 29th, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, October 30th 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Some things are different with Early Voting in a Municipal Election, as opposed to Early Voting during a county wide election. In a county wide election you may Early Vote at any of the Early Voting locations, in a Municipal Election, you must vote within the boundaries of your municipality. Deseret Peak Complex

Convention Center Information The newest attraction at Deseret Peak Complex is now open to the public. A new addition has been added to the Deseret Peak’s indoor arena. The convention center’s main purpose is for gatherings such as; meetings, conferences, and conventions for both public and private use. The convention center extends south from the indoor arena toward the parking lot. The exhibit hall takes up the majority of the space in the convention center. In order to make the space as versatile as possible, there are 5 dividers in the room. The exhibit hall can be on large room measuring 150’x 40’ or it can be divided by any or all of the 5 dividers.

These separate rooms are 25’ x 50’. The total seating capacity for the exhibit hall is 462 or 77 people per room.

The new addition wouldn’t be complete without essential items for meetings and conventions. Additional items available at the exhibit hall are TV/ VCR, screens, overhead projector, flip char stands, podiums with sound, stage, kitchen white boards and Wi-Fi. The complete fee schedule can be found on our website at: wwwdeseretpeakcomplex.com. “Our main goal is to accommodate a variety of events, we even have the ability to sell tickets if the renter desire.” said Lindsay Sundloff – T.C. Parks and Rec. Marketing Specialist. “The exhibit hall is ready for lease and we invite the public to come down and take a look at our new facility.” In addition to the exhibit hall there is a lobby area complete with administrative office spaces, ticketing office and extended concession areas and kitchen areas. This is the space located at the east end of the building. An outdoor stage was also added and utilized during the Tooele County Fair. This stage is also available for rental. Tooele County Commissioners Colleen Johnson, Jerry Hurst and Bruce Clegg; recently celebrated the grand opening of the Tooele County Deseret Peak Complex Convention Center with a ribbon cutting ceremony sponsored by the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce. Helping to cut the ribbon are Mark McKendrick, Tooele County Parks and Recreation Director and Misti Williams, Tooele County Parks and Recreation Assistant Director. Several Tooele County employees and other Chamber members joined in the celebration following a Chamber Luncheon held at the Convention Center and was sponsored by Tooele County.

On Sunday at 8 pm our vehicle stopped running on I 80, 9 miles west of the Tooele exit. A guy named Matt stopped & rope towed us to the TA truck stop.

Monday morning Randy from Mr. Tow picked us up and hauled our vehicle to Bobs Automotive. Randy was a lifesaver and treated us wonderfully. Bob took us in ahead of scheduled work so hopefully we could be on our way home to Denver sooner than later. It took a while for them to figure out our problem but in just a couple of hours, some head scratching, a couple parts run, they had us on our way.

I am trying hard to believe this fantastic kindness and service happens all over the country and I just don’t know, but I do know it happens in Tooele, Utah.

HeritageWest Credit Union Announces New CEO TOOELE, Utah – After more than a decade under the direction of Steve Christensen, HeritageWest Federal Credit Union has a new chief executive officer as Bruce Bryan steps into the vacated position at Utah’s tenth largest credit union.

Steve Christensen had planned his departure, effective August 27, as a personal and family decision. Board Chair Norma Worwood expressed gratitude for the nearly 14 years of service Christensen provided HeritageWest Credit Union and the local community. “We are very saddened to see Steve go, but he felt it was the right timing for his family and for him personally to pursue other endeavors,” said Worwood. “His vision-

Community Business Expo

Shawn Milne, owner and operator of Click Audio Video, donated a 42” television and surround sound system to the annual Chamber Business Expo. Visitors were asked to visit each sponsor booth and then enter to win the prize. Jaycee Shields was the lucky winner! The system was installed in Jaycee’s home by Shawn and his excellent employees.

USU- Tooele Regional Campus News New Building Addition Dedicated and Celebrated The 1989 fi lm Field of Dreams offered the noted tagline – If you build it, they will come. Seems the same is true for the USU-Tooele Regional Campus. Since its inception more than 25 years ago, this extension campus of Utah State University has experienced steady growth. From the early days in rented space along Main Street and Vine, the USU-Tooele Regional Campus enrollments, programs, and square footage of building have increased faster than the inflation rate of some South American countries On September 14, 2009, the USU-Tooele Regional Campus held an open house event to officially dedicate and show off the new building addition. For the past 14 years, the USU-Tooele Regional has engaged our community in teaching and learning at 1021 W. Vine Street. As enrollments expanded and programs increased, a new building addition was planned, funded, and implemented.

Tooele County provided $1.2 million in funding for the project that was completed for $2.89 million. Jacobsen Construction expertly followed the plans of SLC architects Methods Studio to deliver on time and within budget. The building addition increased teaching and learning by

18,000 sq. ft. We have added 16 new classrooms, a biology lab and a second computer lab. The USU-Tooele center is able to broadcast instruction statewide from nine classrooms as well as receive courses in rooms that will seat two to one hundred and two. Our capacity for teaching and learning has expanded well beyond the dreams and aspiration of former Executive Directors Vince Lafferty and Kathleen Robinson. We are a major institution in delivering instruction for community and place bound students. With better access to a greater variety of courses and degree programs, USU-Tooele is help drive the economic and social agenda for the county.





INTRODUCING THE F-400 TOOELE LIFT “The Lift”

UTA is introducing a new f lexible route service, the F400 Tooele Lift, with fixed route and on-demand capabilities. If passengers schedule it one week to two hours in advance, this new route can deviate from its course to pick them up and drop them off at an arranged location.

The Route

The F400 normal route will travel west from the Tooele Senior Center to 1000 West (near the Utah State University extension), south to 200 South (near Valley Mental Health), east to Coleman Street, south to 900 South (near New Ref lections) and east to Main Street. The route continues north on Main Street with stops at the Walmart and Mountain West Medical Center and a connection point to the Grantsville F-401 demand response bus at the 2400 North park & ride lot and return. The F-400 Tooele Lift will circulate at least once every 60 minutes, even with deviations. A public schedule will be available to help customers with the new bus stop

locations, routing, and times of service. The new f lexible service will begin operating on Tuesday, September 8, 2009. The service hours will be 6 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. The f lex route bus stops are marked with a blue route indicator f lag. The F400 Tooele Lift will also use a smaller vehicle, similar to those used for paratransit service. The Grantsville Lift is a non-demand bus service, which means it will perform the special trips when you call in to schedule them. The Grantsville Lift will connect with the Tooele Lift on the half of every hour (3:30, 4:30 etc.)

If you need an early morning trip (before 11:00 a.m.) it is requested that you call the day before to make your request.

Willow Creek Lending Willow Creek Lending recently celebrated the opening of their Tooele office with a ribbon cutting ceremony sponsored by the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce.

Bryan has spent over 30 years in the credit union and financial industry. While completing his degree in Business Administration, he worked in financial services. Over the next 13 years Bryan worked at Universal Campus Credit Union in Provo, now Utah Community Credit Union, as vice president of lending and at Travis Federal Credit Union in Vacaville, California also as vice president of lending. During that time he graduated with honors in 1993 from Western CUNA Management School. In September of 1997, Bryan and his family moved to Stansbury Park when he became the executive vice president at the then named Tooele Federal Credit Union.

Family members, friends and Chamber members joined in the grand opening celebration of the new store front location of the Steven’s brothers computer repair and build service center; including Rachel Stevens, Linda Byrd, Carol Genther, Skelton children, William Hainsworth, Shawn Milne (Click Audio Video), Justin Steed, Chris Sloan (Group 1 Real Estate), Berna Sloan (Group 1 Real Estate), Cari Gavin, (Jack Rabbit Press),Dennis Thalmann, Curtis Beckstrom, Dale Skelton, Mylan Hainsworth, Debbie Winn, Chamber Executive Director, Duaine Trottier, Fran Thalmann and Melanie Skelton. Although the Stevens brothers have been in business over 4 months, they recently relocated to the Vine Street location. “We haven’t seen any broken computer that we couldn’t fix yet”, says the brothers. Although they are skilled at fixing computers, they can also build new systems and networks. They have earned certificates from technology schools and are both currently working on earning bachelor’s degrees.

her. In a public presentation after breakfast, she talked about her book and how to write a novel.

After Mangum’s presentation, Carla Morris, author of the picture book The Boy Who Was Raised by Librarians spoke. She is a children’s librarian at the Provo City Library and talked about how she came up with the story for her book.

Throughout the day there were activities and presentations. The activities included writing stories, making book die-cuts,

designing book covers, and a book scavenger hunt. Entertainment was provided by storytellers Shawn Oviatt and Kathy Witt.

Melissa Swan’s Dance Studio also performed a dance which illustrated the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

In the afternoon, members of the community who purchased tickets enjoyed eating lunch with Brandon Mull (author of the best-selling Fablehaven series) and chatting with him while he shifted around from table to table. The lunch was also catered

by Aioli’s Fine Catering. After lunch, Mull spoke to a crowd of over 200 people. He shared his experiences as an author and answered questions from children in the crowd. Afterwards he signed books for over 2 hours.

In the days leading up to the Book Festival, Mull visited schools around the county.

On Thursday he spoke at Northlake Elementary, St. Marguerite’s Catholic School, and Rose Springs Elementary. He also spent time at the Purple Cow Bookstore where he spoke with children who are homeschooled. On Friday he visited Willow Elementary and Grantsville Junior High.

The Purple Cow Bookstore was happy to host our 1st Annual Children’s Book Festival and provide a fun, rewarding, and entertaining experience for the whole family to help promote literacy in Tooele County.
