Volunteer of the Year John Wright Two years ago, the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce created a new award to be given to an individual or group who provided outstanding volunteer service to the community. This year, several nominations were received. As the Awards Committee members read through the nominations, it was evident that we have many people in our communities that give back tremendously to our residents. For the past 20 years, our Volunteer of the Year has worked

John Wright

with the youth of our community. Providing those youth with an opportunity to excel in sports and develop their self esteem.

Beginning as a coach, umpire, snack bar operator and grounds keeper; eventually becoming the president of Tooele Babe Ruth Baseball; this year’s 2009 Volunteer of the Year is Mr. John Wright. John grew up surrounded by a family that gave back to the community. Serving came natural to him. Back in 1989, the local baseball league was struggling. John took over as president with Ray Harris serving as vice chair. Since that time, the league has flourished and currently has 800 players who take part on 64

teams. John has spent an estimated 1,400 hours annually to the making the league a success. Most of us spend about 2,000 hours annually at our place of employment. Local businesses have benefited greatly by John’s service. By providing an opportunity for local youth to stay active in good things, helps cut down on crime and other mischievous actions that sometimes get our youth into trouble. John, thank you for your many years of volunteer service.

Dori Warner and Jeff England Win Axiom 2010 Customer Service Award For the fifth year in a row, Dori Warner and Jeff England have captured the coveted Axiom Financial Annual Customer Service Award for 2009. This dynamic duo is up against some incredible competition, and their complete commitment to the satisfaction of their clients and partners keeps them on top year after year.

This award is based on live surveys completed by a neutral party shortly after clients close a loan with Axiom. The surveys carefully track each customer’s satisfaction with their mortgage experience - a significant part of how the company does business and achieves their mission to thrill their clients. Obviously, Dori and Jeff accomplish this mission on a daily basis with every client they serve. Axiom Financial is one of the top mortgage lenders in Utah and was the top purchase lender in Tooele County for several months during 2009. The company has grown this year with a large increase in loan volume, and Dori and Jeff have worked hard to keep their excellent service to their clients a top priority of doing business during this hectic year. Mission Accomplished! Congratulations Dori and Jeff! *Top purchase lender position as reported by Rocky Mountain Stats 2009

Chamber of Commerce Employee of the month! Melody Bates, employed by Roni’s Signs and Window Design, is the February 2010 Employee of the Month. She was nominated by her employer and owner, Roni Kennedy. Roni had this to say about Melody: “Melody has worked for me almost a year. She is a great designer and very patient and pleasant with the customers. She is very quiet and never complains. She has such a cheerful disposition. This past year she almost lost her 5 year old son due to an accident that occurred on their farm in Rush Valley when a gate fell on him and his liver was lacerated. She is grateful to have her son with her today and he is the joy of her life. She does great work and has been a super employee. She works very efficiently and gets the work done for the customers in a timely manner. I

am grateful to have her working with me because she brings peace to my office. She was an LDS missionary in her younger years and is a great example to me.” Congratulations Melody for going above and beyond your job description and for providing Roni’s Signs and Window Design customers and co-workers with great service! Denny’s is the 2010 sponsor for the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce employee of the month. Melody (pictured on the left, receives her $20 gift card from Lisa LaFleur (right), manager at Denny’s in Tooele. All Chamber members may nominate an employee to receive this award. Winners will receive a $20 Denny’s gift card along with a t-shirt and other gift items.

Tobacco Prevention asks for help from Chamber members and County businesses

February 20105

The Tooele County Commission & The Tooele County Chamber of Commerce are proud to present the

2010 Resource Directory

The Tooele County Youth Prevention and Advocacy Club shared a message with drivers on Kick Butts Day last year.

by Gayle Parker, Tobacco Prevention Specialist, Tooele County School District We may have differing views on tobacco use and smoking laws, but I think we can all agree that we don’t want our kids using tobacco. Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances available over the counter. Kids may not be old enough to buy tobacco, but they are certainly the target of the $59 million dollars that the tobacco industry spends on advertising each year in Utah. We don’t have that kind of money in the tobacco prevention budget, not in Tooele County, not in the entire state. But there are some things we can do as employers and employees to keep youth from picking up the tobacco habit. Recently at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon, I asked those in attendance to do two specific things to help curb tobacco use by kids. The first is this: Do not allow any person under the age of 19 to use any tobacco product at your place of work. It is against the law. Tobacco is an illegal drug in the hands of minors. Don’t let them have tobacco on them. Don’t allow smoke breaks for 18 year olds. Don’t let them have a dip in their lip while they are out of sight or in sight on your premises. Make it clear to under-age employees and their friends that tobacco use of any kind at work will not be tolerated. The second request: Move your employee smoking areas (whether they be designated or not) to less obvious locations. There is no law that mandates this. This is based on customer service, second-hand smoke exposure, and most importantly a message to youth. Smokers aren’t bad people. We simply don’t want our youth observing adult smokers on their breaks and getting the message that it’s OK, cool, or socially acceptable. There are things we do in front of kids and there are things we don’t. Let’s not allow smoking to be one of those things. These are just small steps we can take. Our small steps over the years have made a difference. Tooele County SHARP survey data from 2009 shows that most teens are not using tobacco. In fact, more than 9 out of 10 teens do not use tobacco. Let’s all work together as a community to make it 10 out of 10.

Digidocs “The client absolutely loved it right off the get go.” Says Chris after telling me about the product.

Written by: Melissa Baird, Grantsville High School student

Digidocs is a business that offers document scanning, digital archiving, copies, printing, graphic design, and shipping. Digidocs started out as a small home based document scanning and digital archiving service in 2007. It wasn’t until the year 2008 in late September that Jill Thomas, and her son Chris Duncan decided to expand their business. Chris Duncan, who has been designing logo identities for 15 years, was recently asked to create a logo for a product called, “Happy Monkey Hummus” for a company in Salt Lake City.

“Happy Monkey Hummus” had its first test run in the farmers market in Salt Lake City last summer. On the first day the Whole Foods company decided they wanted “Happy Monkey Hummus” to be sold in their stores. Today 60,000 labels for “Happy Monkey Hummus” are being printed.

Their team consists of Brian Sorensen, wife Jerilyn, daughter Chelsea and Kurt Osterhout, Mechanic & Driver. They are available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. You can contact them at 435-8430075 or come on down and see them at 100 No. Emerald Road (Utah Industrial Depot). Their office is open Monday – Friday, 10 am – 6 pm. every year along with past, and future logo winners. “Logo designs and business identity are probably my favorite things to do. I believe your logo should represent what your business is and should grab attention.” – Chris Duncan. Digidocs Provides a lot of services and wants to make sure that customers leave satisfied. They can help you provide that perfect finish on any project you bring to them. “Our Business is helping you find the right solution for your business or personal project.” Digidocs is located at 225 E. Main St., Grantsville, Utah.

“To start in the farmers market and be printing 60,000 labels in less than a year is amazing. We’re really excited about it.” – Chris Duncan. Chris has also received a blue ribbon at the Tooele County fair for his design for the fair’s new logo competition. Chris’s design will be used for the fair

Why should we care about the Census? There aren’t many things that can generate the rumors as much as the U. S. Census. And it is the year of the Decennial Census. The usual reason we’re given to complete the form is that it is the law. And those who completed the 2000 census remember that it was a major effort to get it done. It asked how many bathrooms you had, how far you drove to work, etc. This year the form is short and sweet. So this isn’t going to take a lot of effort or time. But let’s look at this from a selfish point of view. Everyone in Tooele County is affected by the Census. No exception. As business owners know any marketing plan worth its

salt is based on sound data that originates from the U. S. Census. I’ve had many people ask me if we are going to get Kohl’s, Costco, Olive Garden, Target or some other major chain into our community. These chains are purely Census driven. It is rooftops, which translate into number of people, which then translates into family size which transfers into age groups, which then translate into average household income and then net spendable income. From there they have their own unique formulas to determine how much of the net spendable income is spent on goods and services that they provide. I have yet to speak to

February 2010

a company that we have had come into the county without going through an extensive study and discussion on workforce that is based on a Decennial Census. That has even involved the Department of Workforce Services and the Governor’s office to prove that we have the workforce and the housing for that workforce that their company requires. Yes, we do make estimates, but the Decennial Census is the basis that makes the foundation of those estimates. Up until now, I’ve spoken from a business point of view, but there is much more. Many of our friends and neighbors have lost their jobs or have had to settle for less, seeking out assistance. And more than ever, more people have had to rely on our food bank and relief services to survive. Those agencies, everything from National to local social service organizations rely on funding based upon estimates from the last Decennial Census. The programs that our schools can offer and when as well as where a school is built are based upon the Census. Our youth that are in High School will be affected at a critical part of their lives, as if they are 17 now, the next Census won’t occur until they are 27. In that time they will

graduate from High School, enter into college or vocational school, get a job, develop a career and perhaps even have a family. How accurate of a count we have this year, will heavily impact them and the quality of life they and their families will enjoy. Senior citizens also rely on the Census. They are concerned with programs that will provide essential services such as medical, food and shelter based upon this Census. Bottom line is that we as a community rely so much on what we enjoy and have access to that is based upon the Census, we can’t afford to get a less than accurate count. To have an inaccurate count will mean going without some programs and benefits or paying more in taxes to get them. The Federal government will give out Billions of dollars to those populations that demonstrate need and whether we show that the need exists in Tooele County or not, the money will be paid out. So to make sure that our community can respond to our needs and perhaps from a selfish point of view, encourage everyone to complete the form, whether it is received in the mail or delivered to their residence, so we can get our fair share.

Without hesitation, Shawn agreed to attend the Ambassador Meetings and was soon elected to chair the committee. Shawn did not serve as the chair in name only. He jumped right in and began to recruit other members, made plans to enhance the program, and attended nearly every Chamber event and function. Shawn did this with enthusiasm

and a true commitment to serve where he was needed and with great dedication. He completed this task while running his own business. Shawn has been in business over 11 years as is the owner and operator of Click Audio Video, a sales, service and installation business for electronics- as varied as home theaters to surveillance systems; residential, commercial and institutional. Shawn is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Tooele, is an avid scout leader, and also serves on the Tooele Valley Community Cooperative Board of Directors. Shawn has recently been elected and now serves on the Tooele City Council. He has

served on the Tooele City Planning and Zoning Commission since February 2005 and served as Chair on that Commission. He has attended Tooele City Council meetings and School Board Meetings on a regular basis for over 9 years. Shawn earned a Bachelor’s Degree and an MBA from Westminster College of Salt Lake City. He is an Eagle Scout and has earned 3 palms. He is married to Renee Milne, current Chair of the Tooele City Arts Council and Vice-Principal of Stansbury High School. The Tooele County Chamber of Commerce is appreciative and proud to honor Shawn Milne as the 2009 Ambassador of the Year.

Special thanks to the following for making our 2010 Annual Installation Banquet a huge success!

Rick Pollock & Rick Pollock, owner of 435 Design, has more than two decades of advertising/ marketing experience. What started out as a trial-by-fire when Rick’s boss handed him an “HTML for Dummies” book and said “you are now in charge of our website” quickly turned into a passion and eventually, a promotion with 4 additional websites to manage. In the spring of 2001, Rick was offered, and accepted, a unique opportunity to coordinate activities at the Athletes’ Village for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. After the Olympics, Rick went back to the University of Utah to take more classes in website, graphic and print design. He graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication. In 2005, Rick became the National Marketing Director for ComputerEase Construction Accounting Software and worked with its 24 national dealers to develop and design effective and affordable print, email and web-based marketing materials. “Most of these dealers had never used e-mail marketing before,” Rick explains, “They were spending thousands of dollars mailing out little one-color 4-by-6 postcards every month. Together, we utilized a targeted email

marketing campaign and were able to free up enough budget that they could then explore additional marketing avenues that they’d never considered before.” This new marketing strategy proved tremendously successful. In 2008, Rick took a leap of faith and realized his true passion, starting 435 Design with a goal of providing effective and affordable print, email, and website marketing solutions to small businesses and individuals. 435 Design is a work in progress. Rick is challenged every day to apply his creative efforts in providing

One nomination for Gary and Ron was received by Rodie England, Tooele Best Western Inn & Suites. She wrote the following about them: “There are those who seek recognition and want themselves and their efforts to be recognized. There are those whose efforts deserve recognition but never seek to be recognized. This is how I feel about my friends, Ron and Gary. They have given and given but never asked for the applause of the public. Ron and Gary are extremely civic minded. They have supported such groups as Little League, Girl’s Softball, Tooele County High School Sports, Tooele High School Bands and etc for more than 40 years. Gary has prepared and served spit roasted pigs for state championship sports teams. Gary was a Tooele County Commissioner for 8 years. He also served on the Tooele City Planning and Zoning Committee and is presently serving with Tooele County Economic Development. He has served as an excellent leader in his church. Most of all Gary has been a valiant father and husband. He and his wife Naomi, are the parents of five children; three boys and two girls. Several of these children have been adopted by Gary and Naomi and even now they are raising a young grandson in their home. Ron and his wife Barbara are also parents of five children; three boys and two girls. Ron has also been an exemplary father and husband. He is identified in his church as an outstanding leader. Ron served for significant years as a member of the Tooele Hospital Board. He also served as President of the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce. Ron has served as President of Utah State Association of General Contractors and has also served with that group on a national level. Ron and Gary have always been committed to involvement with community. Christmas Holiday Lunch with C&G has been a social gathering for Tooele County citizens for many, many years. It is an event where food and good will is hosted by Gary and Ron and their very supportive families. Gary and Ron have given freely of their time, talents, and finances for many years. Use and care Tip by Cleaning dishes more effectively •

Soft water is highly recommended. It helps the dishwasher perform as designed. Test for hard water and purchase a water softener in necessary.

Scrape the dishes off before putting them in the dishwasher. A restricted wash system results in immediate filming and unsanitary conditions. “Do not wash your dishes before washing your dishes”! Don’t confuse scraping with washing. We need dirty dishes to get clean dishes. The detergent needs the soil to do its thing and break down as it should.

Always purge the hot water at the sink until it is hot just before running the dishwasher. This will ensure the first fill is hot. Also, check to make sure that your hot water heater is set between 120-125 degrees. Most units are shipped turned way down. Keep in mind that hotter is not better. Any hotter with these new dishwashers and you get what is called flash drying. This is when the environment in the dishwasher is so hot that after the final rinse, instead of the water running off the glass taking with it all its impurities, it is instantly baked on.

Choose the correct cycle. The average consumer wants to use the shortest cycle possible to save money and then blame the dishwasher for not cleaning. Shorter is not necessarily better. Once you’ve chosen the proper cycle do not interrupt it.

Don’t use a detergent that has a rinse aid in it and also put liquid rinse aid in the dispenser. This causes suds in the final rinse. Plain CASCADE® and a rinse aid in the dispenser are recommended.

For getting rid of film try a product called GLISTEN®. Follow the instructions, bearing in mind that you may need to do it twice. If the problem is not corrected, disassembly may be necessary and possibly even part replacement. GLISTEN® is also a deodorizer. It is recommended that you use it twice a year whether you need it or not. An ounce of prevention is better than a ton of cure.
