EnergySolutions CEO at center of nuclear storm New leader is quiet, calm voice of reason for EnergySolutions By Amy Joi O’Donoghue Deseret News Reprinted by permission from Deseret News

Val Christensen

SALT LAKE CITY — He is a man of understated demeanor in an industry marked by shrill rhetoric, by emotional cries of environmental damage, by ardent slogans that screech of Utah being the nuclear dumping ground of the world. Still, his voice remains one of quiet conviction, of black-andwhite facts, of reiterating his points in the face of a loud chorus of disapproval. Val Christensen, the newly named chief executive officer of EnergySolutions, has stepped onto the center stage of the nuclear arena. His appointment as head of the company comes as developments in the industry and companion controversy power up at a furious pace, locally, nationally and globally. In Utah, critics of the company that operates the world’s largest

waste disposal facility in Clive, Tooele County, are waging the radioactive battle on multiple fronts. Foreign waste. Depleted uranium. Waste blending. Last year, after the company’s 10-member board tapped him as president, Christensen ventured into the potentially stressing fray of being the “face” of a company that many love to hate but few understand. “Initially it was something I had to adjust to, but I really embraced the opportunity to tell the company story,” he said. “I was energized by the chance to get the facts out about the company and to find that people understood that a lot of the things they were hearing were not true. … It really hasn’t been a taxing or uncomfortable thing.”

The ascension to CEO of inarguably Utah’s most controversial company began as a steady climb for the Brigham Young University law graduate. It was shaped in the basement of Hyrum Smith’s home in the mid-1980s when the founder of what would go on to be Franklin Covey was setting up shop to produce day planners and homemade management courses. Christensen was on the ground in the company’s formative stages and went on to be its general counsel and executive vice president, running all aspects of the operation. From its basement beginnings, the company blossomed to include more than 1,500 associates and 37 offices in more than 100 countries. After Envirocare of Utah joined with two other companies to become EnergySolutions in 2006, top executives started hunting for general counsel, and again Christensen found himself in the formative stages of shepherding a new corporate animal. March 2010

Chamber of Commerce Employee of the month!

Ellen Totman, Millpond Spa and Retreat, is the March 2010 Employee of the Month. She was nominated by her fellow employees. Ellen’s co-workers say that she is the reason their patrons return again and again. Ellen makes all their clients (guests) feel so welcome and pampered. Ellen says that it is a “team effort” and that all of the staff members provide high quality service to their customers. Congratulations Ellen for going above and beyond your job description and for providing

Millpond Spa and Retreat customers and co-workers with great service! Denny’s is the 2010 sponsor for the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce employee of the month. Ellen Totman (pictured on the right, receives her $20 gift card from Wendy Guay, (center), manager at Denny’s in Tooele. Also included in photo (left) is Scott Totman, owner of Millpond Spa and Retreat and Ellen’s husband. All Chamber members may nominate an employee to receive this award. Winners will receive a $20 gift

Clerk’s Insider Recently a number of Tooele County voters have received confirmation notices in the mail asking if they still live at that address. There are a number of things that would precipitate a confirmation notice: 1 - Not voting in two Marilyn K. Gillette general elections; 2 - A voter identification card returned undeliverable; 3 - The Clerk’s Office receiving notification that the voter no longer live’s at that address. Utah State Law requires these notifications to make sure that the voters are able to vote if they so choose. They do, however, require that our official registers are as up to date as possible, thus requiring all of these notices. So, while it is frustrating to receive a notice asking if the voter is still at the address they have lived at for 50 years, please know that we are just following the law and trying to keep our records updated. If voters want to make sure they don’t receive these notices, the solution is easy, re-register to vote upon changing addresses, and vote every election! Thanks for Voting! Marilyn K. New Chamber Member

Gloria Kershaw

Independent Scentsy Consultant Gloria Kershaw is one our newest Chamber Members. Scentsy began in 2003 with the powerfully simple idea of aromatic candles – decorative warmers with wax melted by the heat of a light bulb instead of a traditional wick and flame. Gloria is a single mother of 5 year old daughter, Annamaria and has lived most of her life in Tooele. She enjoys spending time

with her daughter, grandmother and family. She is currently employed at Jackrabbit Press where she pursues her love of the design world and at the Chamber of Commerce where she helps in the process of helping businesses prosper. Gloria became a Independent Scentsy Consultant because she loves the product herself and wanted to be apart of a growing company. She has a great mentor in the Scentsy world, Director George Terra. He is always willing to help her along the way of

learning this different adventure in her life. She is very proud to call herself a Chamber member, for the Chamber has giving her a better understanding in the importance of businesses in our community. Community Businesses can receive critical business readiness training The Tooele County Emergency Management office, Tooele County Sheriff’s office and the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a 3 hour training workshop to be held on Wednesday, March 17, 2010, beginning at 9 am, to help your business prepare for an emergency. Each year disasters force thousands of businesses to close. But even more common events such as building fires, broken water lines or sudden loss of data cause the same result. SBA research shows that at least 25 percent of businesses that close following events such as these do not reopen. Many that do – struggle just to stay in business. Every Business should have a plan …It just makes good business sense! Did you know that over 90% of companies experiencing a major data loss can not fully recover all of their information? 4045% of businesses fail to resume operations after a major theft or fire? 25% of businesses do not reopen following a major disaster? Participants of the Ready Your Business -12 Point Program to Business Continuity Planning, can learn the value of Business Continuity Planning during this interactive workshop series with hands on instruction, a sample continuity plan guidebook, handouts and resource links. The twelve steps include: Creating a Planning Team, Continuity of Authority, Risks & Hazards, Internal / External Resources & Capabilities, Vulnerability Assessments, Essential Business Functions, Human Resources / Employee Communications, Workplace Evacuation & Sheltering, Workplace Emergency Supply Kits, Insurance Review, Vital Records and Data: Protection/Storage/Recovery. The Chamber of Commerce will be reviewing these 12 points during the next year to assist Chamber business to prepare their plans so they will be ready for unexpected events that could jeopardize their business. The event will be held at the Tooele County Emergency Management office located at 15 East 100 South, Tooele. Although there is no charge for this event, you must RSVP to the Chamber office (435)882-0690 or debbie@tooelechamber.com.

“Take 10” and Help Tooele County Get What it Needs for the Next 10 Years In March 2010, more than 130 million addresses will receive a 2010 Census form by mail or hand delivery. The 2010 Census will document the changes in our nation since the last decennial census in 2000, and tell us how we’ve evolved as a country. Because census data affect how more than $400 billion in federal funding is distributed to tribal, state and local governments, the census also will frame the future of our country and our community for the next 10 years.

cent as of the April 2000 cutoff. About $85 million is saved for every one percent increase in mail participation. For these and many other reasons, we must work to encourage everyone’s participation in the census. Here’s what you should know about the 2010 Census:

All Star Lanes

March 2010

Written by Gloria Kershaw

All Star Lanes is changing up the entertainment scene in Tooele County. They have undergone some major changes by adding a 3500 sq. ft. laser tag arena, a second arcade and a full service bar. Businessman Brad Shepherd purchased the business back in 2007 when it was formerly known as Buddy’s. “He had great visions when he remodeled the business this last year,” says Manager Wendy Ricci. Shepherd, who also owns All Star Lanes in Sandy & West Jordan, started the remodeling in September of 2009. The new attractions have been very popular among people of all ages. The laser tag arena has enough equipment to suit 20 players, so it’s a great activity for the entire family. They have added a wide variety of arcade games including Guitar Here, Deal or No Deal, the wheel of fortune, where you can spin for a chance of winning 1000 tickets to use at there hugely expanded prize redemption counter. NUCLEAR

Continued from page 3

“I was really intrigued with the potential of the business. I did my own due diligence about the company and concluded it was safe. It was a business that had a lot of negative publicity. From everything I researched, it was not earned or deserved.” But looking back on the yelps of criticism directed at the company, Christensen concedes EnergySolutions has faltered in the public opinion arena by focusing too much on a corporation communication strategy dominated by “branding” or “feel good” ads. “We have not really focused on what we should have — educating people about what we do. When we do, we win their hearts and minds.” The new idea behind EnergySolutions’ ad campaign is to better explain what it does and confront the controversy head on by giving people a glimpse inside the facility. Radio ads now invite people to tour the facility for themselves. Christensen can already hear the snorts of disbelief, the derisive scorn from critics like HEAL Utah, a grassroots anti-nuclear group constantly swinging a club to strike at the armor of the international company. Executive director Vanessa Pierce had nothing good to say about Christensen taking over as CEO. “In practice, Val has been running the show for the past few months and has been running roughshod over Utah’s efforts to protect our state from depleted uranium, diluted B & C waste and foreign waste. (B and C waste is more radioactive and prohibited under Utah law.) We can expect more of the same with him at the helm,” she said. HEAL Utah’s strident opposition

They decided to take one Utah family’s bad experience of mingling their lives with that of a foreign 9-year-old boy and turn it into something good. After four months of paperwork and negotiations with the adoption company, the Christensens traveled to Kazakhstan and brought him home for good. “He’s just been a huge joy.” Christensen, the president and CEO, spends his days penning directives, writing memos, overseeing the crafting of a comprehensive plan on how to safely store depleted uranium at

the company’s Clive facility. He jots notes, talks, writes down figures and thoughts, and talks some more. In those between times, Christensen — the man — writes poetry. It is not a tributary for corporate frustration but rather sentimental expressions that capture times past, times future. He once wrote a poem envisioning his daughters as old women, trading life stories over a restaurant table. In one, “Sunday Boys,” he harkens to the past in Ephraim on the weathered concrete steps of a

library next to an old red church, where the only five boys of the same age in town would gather when they were supposed to be in church. We grew up decades ago and took a dozen different roads from town,” the poem reads. “We were once co-captains of sailing boats, astronauts sharing cubical red rocket ships, brave, cold and alone together in space. But now the awkward shyness of our childhood intimacy leaves us friendly strangers.” While family and poetry and his two Harley-Davidsons tug at his heart, Christensen — the

CEO and the man who believes in EnergySolutions — doesn’t let his emotions or the critics run his day on the job. “There are moments when I am tempted to tire of the fight and at those times, I realize it is not about me,” he said, waving off phone calls from investors, politicians, and who knows who else. “This is not my fight. It is a fight on behalf of the industry, hundreds of employees in the state and customers who need our services so I don’t allow myself to become selfishly tired of the controversy and the battles we are forced to fight every day.”

If less than 30% of employees are highly engaged in their jobs, it could mean that nearly 12% of organizations’ labor costs are wasted every year in non-productive employee activities, underperformance, and negativity spread through the workplace.
