s the song says “It’s the most wonderful time of the year…” And I have to agree. The Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are my favorites. I was fortunate to spend time with my loved ones last month for Thanksgiving and look forward to spending more time with family this Christmas. This season is the time to reflect on all the blessings we enjoy. I do have so much to be thankful for. I have a wonderful, supportive family, extended

family, and friends. I feel very fortunate to have good health. And I’m grateful for this great country and for the beautiful world we enjoy. Tooele County has many bounties as well. During these challenging economic times, Tooele County has a relatively low unemployment rate. New businesses continue to locate in Tooele County. And our local governments have so far been able to provide the services we expect without raising taxes. The County Commissioners know that times are hard for most of us

HeritageWest Raised $2,000 New Chamber Members to Support Endangered Youth

The Tooele County Chamber of Commerce extends a warm welcome to our newest members:

Endangered youth supported by The Tooele County Children’s Justice Center received a boost from $2,000 donation from HeritageWest Credit Union, who has been supportive partner of the Justice Center for 10 years

N

ovember 17, 2011 (Tooele, UT): Children endangered by abuse recently received a boost from HeritageWest Credit Union thanks to a $2,000 donation presented to The Tooele County Children’s Justice Center, an organization that provides services and facilities to support young children and their families. The money was presented during the Center’s annual Black Tie & Blue Jeans event, and was raised through a number of fund raising initiatives by

Continued from page 2 and want to be able to increase economic growth in the county as much as possible. The county government is tightening its belt as well, in response to a very tight budget. In spite of that, the Commission Chair Colleen Johnson recognizes the many things she is thankful for. She wrote the following: “I love this time of year, and am grateful that I live in such a wonderful county. The people of Tooele County are willing to help and give all year round. Whenever there is a need at Relief Services or the Food Bank, the response is always unbelievably generous. “Every year we become a bigger community, but the small town feeling is still here. We care about our neighbors and those in our community that are struggling or having trouble finding employment or any kind of difficulties. Individuals and businesses all work together to make sure everyone has a good holiday season. “I applaud all the businesses and individual groups that helped provide Thanksgiving dinners to anyone who wanted one. What a great reputation for our community to have, and a wonderful blessing for our citizens. “Our family has always been big into Christmas lights and decorations. Each year it seems it gets a little more time consuming, but it is great fun to see a family looking at our lights and see the smiles on the kids’ faces. We love to drive around and see all the different houses that are lit-up and decorated. Search and Rescue does a great job with the tree on Little Mountain, Tooele City lights up Veterans Park, and Grantsville’s Fire Department has a great display. “I think it’s a great time to reflect and be grateful for all we have here in Tooele County. It’s wonderful to have businesses and industries that provide jobs. I’ve always said that Tooele County is so great because of our diversity and because of our closeness as a community.” We are very fortunate to live in these times and in this place. There are so many benefits we enjoy. Unfortunately,

the HeritageWest staff, including their weekly “Black & White Friday” effort. Each Friday, HeritageWest staffers donned clothes of either color – using the occasion to collect donations from staff and members while drawing attention to worthy local community endeavors. For the past 10 years, HeritageWest has also donated money, clothing, gifts and other necessities to the Justice Center in conjunction with programs such as The Angel Tree and Warm the Soles. The Children’s Justice Center provides a homelike environment that eliminates the need for multiple interviews when meeting with children who may be victims of physical or sexual abuse. It is one of 15 child-friendly, homelike facilities around the state. there are still many who are suffering more than others, some who may not have the means to provide any Christmas gifts for their families, some who may not be able to put a Christmas turkey or ham on the dinner table. There are those who may be alone and lonely. There are things we who have more can do for those who have less. First of all, it always helps to shop locally. Your dollars will most likely stay in the community and help businesses and the economy grow here. Your tax dollars will stay here, adding to the budgets that provide essential government services. You can also buy a little extra food and take it to the Utah Food Bank in the Tooele County Relief Services building (38 South Main St., across from the County Building). You can donate coats and clothing to Relief Services. You can make a donation to Youth Services. You can purchase one or two extra toys and drop them off in the Toys for Tots box located in the County Building at 47 South Main Street. Of course there are many other things we can do to help those in need, such as raking leaves or shoveling driveways for those that may not have the health or ability to do so. I know if we try to do some of these things, this spirit of giving and of service will put a new light on our own Christmas experience, making the holidays seem a little brighter than before. One thing I need to try to do, and encourage everyone else to do, is slow down the pace a little bit this holiday season. We should slow down enough during the day-to-day hustle and bustle to enjoy the colorful lights and beautiful decorations around us. Listen to some Christmas music. Go to the Tooele or Grantsville Santa parade. But more importantly, we should take the time to visit relatives, especially those that are alone this time of year. Make an effort to mend relationships that have been neglected. And tell those people closest to us that we love them. Regardless of our personal beliefs, I think this is a time for all of us to remember and hope for peace on earth, good will toward men. I know I do. Merry Christmas!

County School District establishes Education Foundation

T

he Tooele County School District is pleased inform members of the Chamber of Commerce of the development and establishment of the TCSD Education Foundation. The mission of the TCSD Education Foundation is to encourage, invite, coordinate and enable individuals, institutions, businesses and industries to donate time, talent, services, money and other resources in order to make a meaningful impact on students and teachers in public schools. Most people may not realize that throughout the nation there are over 6,000 school district education foundations. In Utah there are nineteen. After more than three years of study, it was recognized that the time had come when the Tooele County School District could benefit from the services of an education foundation. The Tooele County School District Education Foundation was officially chartered in April of 2010. The Foundation strives to promote excellence in education in the Tooele County School district and its schools and accomplishes this by building relationships within the community, raising and providing funds to support programs and initiatives that inspire and enable teaching and learning and honoring excellence in education. The Foundation also helps align the talents, interests, time and services of community members to the needs of Tooele County schools, teachers and students. Donations are used to enhance teaching, to encourage students and provide them with learning opportunities and to support innovative educational programs throughout the school district. One hundred percent of donations go toward improving education in the Tooele County School District. During the first year of operations, the Foundation conducted a number of pilot projects. These included the coordinated the Third Annual Children’s Book Festival, the creation and implementation of an Adopt-a-School program in conjunction with local businesses and the establishment and coordination of traveling art exhibits in nine district schools. The Foundation also instituted and administered the Jordan M. Byrd Scholarship Program. Several other worthwhile projects and programs are now underway. Future initiatives include starting the teacher mini-grant program, planning and conducting an honors and awards ceremony for teachers and conducting a strategic planning workshop to evaluate how best to support education in the school district. Supporting education in Tooele County means a stronger and more thriving community for our children and a more promising future. Education is all about opportunity. The Foundation is striving to provide more of it. Donations of time, services, equipment

and money will enhance education and will mean an increased chance of success and opportunity for learners. Funding and extra resources for students, teachers and schools helps bridge the gap that exists between what school budgets can

cover and what is needed to ensure the academic success of all students. The board of directors of the Foundation current consists of seven individuals with a strong commitment to education. They include Bruce

Bryan - Heritage West Credit Union, Ed Dalton - Community Member, W. Dean Johnson - Zions Bank, Tooele Branch, Terry Linares – Superintendent of Schools, Jeremy Scott - Community Member, Jill Thomas - owner-Digidocs, and Isa Ventura, Owner-The Purple Cow Bookstore. If you have an innovative idea or project in mind, or if you’d like to find out how you can become involved, we’d like to hear from you. Dr. Edward Dalton is serving as the Foundation’s executive director. He can be reached at 435-830- 8551.

Chamber, Alliance join up to host luncheon

O

n Wednesday, November 9, 2011, more than 120 Chamber along with members of the Tooele County Alliance for Education, Employment and Economic Development members joined together for a great luncheon. It was held at the beautiful and accommodating Community Learning Center. The informative and enjoyable event was sponsored by the Department of Workforce Services, Tooele County Alliance for Education, Employment and Economic Development, Tooele County School District, Tooele Applied Technology College, Tooele County, and the Utah State University – Tooele Regional Campus. The outstanding luncheon was provided courtesy of Miller Motorsports Park, the Quality Automotive Group, the Tooele County School District, the TCSD Education Foundation and Utah State University. The luncheon was a generous donation during this month of Thanksgiving. We express special appreciation for this help. Members in attendance enjoyed two beautiful piano numbers performed by Julie Ernst, a counselor at Blue Peak High School. Following her music a group introduced Chamber members to architectural rendering of the new TATC / USA educational facility to be constructed this coming year. The presentation entitled The Education Corridor: From Vision to Reality was presented by Pat Dunlavy – Mayor – Tooele City, Scott Snelson – President

– Tooele Applied Technology College, Dr. Gary Straquadine – Dean – USU Tooele Regional Campus and Basil Harb -Vice President/Senior Designer and Todd Kelsey, Associate/Project Manager. Both represented Media Studio – the firm awarded the architectural contract. Following their presentation a short presentation was made on the establishment of the TCSD Education Foundation. That presentation was made by Dean Johnson from Zions Bank who serves as President of the Foundation Board of Directors and Dr. Edward Dalton who is serving and the Foundation’s Executive Director. Concluding remarks were made by Superintendent Terry Linares. She paid special tribute to all those veterans assembled who had served our country over the years and presented them with a book as a token of appreciation. Excitement is running high regarding this new facility. It will be located directly across the street from the Community Learning Center. Together these two institutions of learning form the “hub” of this “education corridor”. The programs and offering in this area will include services through Blue Peak High School, Career and Technology Education offerings, services from Adult Education, a broad range of existing and new and emerging applied technology programs made possible by the Tooele Applied Technology College and a variety of programs to be offered by Utah State University. This wide array of educational and training options should create great variety of pathways and opportunities for students of all ages. Pathways directly related to well paying jobs here at home.
