Jayson Tate and Glen Swallow, owners of Mr. Appliance® of Tooele and Salt Lake, are proud to announce their new membership to the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce. Tate, a lifetime local Tooele County resident, started an appliance company called Best Tech Service six years ago because he saw a need to bring great appliance service right here to his own community. The business did well but needed to grow to meet the needs of the community and still provide the top of the line service Tate offered. He then purchased the Mr. Appliance franchise in 2006 to provide national backing for our community and has been growing ever since. Mr. Appliance has been serving the Tooele community for the past three years. Recently Tate joined with Glen Swallow to expand into the Greater Salt Lake Valley. The duo was recently awarded the Mr. Appliance national Builder of the Year award, which goes to the franchise owners who contribute the most to building the company on a national scale. This goes to show, this company is
bringing jobs and helping strengthen the economy right here in our own community. Mr. Appliance of Tooele and Salt Lake is part of North America’s leading appliance repair franchise system with more than 150 franchises in the United States and Canada. Established in 1996, its franchises service all major brands and types of appliances. The company adheres to stringent standards for quality and service. This includes wearing shoe covers inside to protect customers’ homes and using a menu pricing guide so there are no surprises. The company also offers customer service-oriented programs, such as the Advantage Plan® program for special pricing and preferred service and the HomeSmart e-mail newsletter with home and appliance tips and trends. Also watch for our monthly tips in this news letter. The team at Mr. Appliance of Salt Lake and Tooele thanks the community for their support and looks forward to grow as a leader in the community and in the service industry in the years to come.

New Depot Deputy in Town
Tooele County Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
The Deseret Chemical Depot (DCD) may be approaching its downhill stretch, but there is still much to accomplish—some of it uncharted territory. That was the message DCD’s new Deputy Commander Don Campbell shared with Tooele County Chamber members at the August chamber luncheon. Campbell told chamber members that DCD’s primary mission remains the same: to ensure the safety and security of its stockpile until it can be safely destroyed. But, Campbell noted, as end of operations (late 2011) and closure (late 2014) draw nearer, there will be new challenges for both the depot and the community. For the depot, upcoming challenges include the disposal of GA nerve and Lewisite blister agents (DCD has the nation’s only stockpile of these chemical agents), treatment and disposal of nearly two million pounds of secondary waste, and a successful
work force transition. The latter will certainly impact Tooele County, noted Campbell. DCD/TOCDF is one of the county’s largest employers, with nearly 1,400 workers earning an average annual salary of $50,000. Campbell acknowledged that planning efforts are already underway to ensure the transition of the work force goes as smoothly as possible. At the luncheon, Campbell also updated members about current operations at the Tooele Chemical Agent Disposal Facility (TOCDF) and ongoing closure-related work at the Chemical Agent Munitions Disposal System (CAMDS). As a new resident to the area, Campbell welcomed the opportunity to speak at the luncheon. He officially joined DCD a few months ago and told chamber members he is looking forward to becoming active in the community while helping DCD accomplish its goals.

Communities across the U.S. are adopting an innovative idea - Buy Local...Give Local. Three times as much money stays in your local economy when you buy from a locally owned business. Studies have found that communities with more locally owned businesses have lower poverty rates, greater civic participation, more product diversity and more charitable giving. The next time you need to replenish your office supplies or are considering equipment upgrades, think of Les Olson Company locally owned and operated since 1956. Help keep Utah thriving. Give us the chance to show you what we can do.

Mountain America Credit Union Celebrates 75 Years
For 75 years, people have been turning to Mountain America Credit Union (MACU) for their financial needs. Our humble story begins in 1934, in the midst of the Great Depression. Hard working Americans were losing their jobs. Many families were struggling just to put food on the table. Utah’s telephone workers pulled together to help those around them. They formed Utah Telephone Workers Credit Union and met in the cafeteria of an old equipment building in downtown Salt Lake City. A lot has changed since then. The credit union has evolved into the Mountain America you know today—with 62 locations, 328,000 members and $2.8 billion in assets. Eleven years ago the decision was made to open a branch in Tooele. A few years later we had outgrown our small space in the strip mall by Wal-Mart and made plans to construct our own building. The new office opened in 2005 and has been thriving ever since. Branch manager, Kristian King, loves the community and serves in various capacities with such groups as the Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis and the Exchange Clubs. “It’s nice to be able to give back to the community that has supported us for all these years,” says King. With a focus on quality and convenience, Mountain America offers everything from basic savings and checking accounts, consumer loans and free online banking to business accounts, investments and insurance. As one of the top credit union SBA lenders, MACU has been highlighted in Entrepreneur magazine and the Wall Street Journal. The credit union has also earned the title of most powerful credit union brand in the country for credit unions with assets over $1 billion. Bancography, a financial institution consultation firm, ranked financial institutions by using a Brand Value Index. The index looks at multiple factors that create long-term value including reputation, service quality, image and market awareness. “We work hard to uphold that title,” King says. “Our member service is our top priority. We take care of our members as if they were family.” Many things have changed over the years, but our philosophy hasn’t. We promise to always uphold this tradition of people helping people…for another 75 years and beyond.

people and causes progressive kidney deterioration and profound hearing loss, especially in boys. The majority of those affected by Alport Syndrome require dialysis or a kidney transplant by their early 20s. The organization has grown tremendously from being a local advocacy effort to an international effort with global outreach. The Foundation has registrants from over 25 countries and from every state. “We are finding that families around the world are isolated at a time when they are most vulnerable, says Vint DeGraw Alport Syndrome Foundation Vice President. Alport Syndrome is a family diagnosis that affects many generations, including siblings, cousins and parents. Not only are these families dealing with the shock of diagnosis and the impact of the disease on their daily lives, but they often have to deal with the illness with multiple loved ones at the same time. The Foundation provides a support community that didn’t previously exist and
links patients, families, medical providers, and the scientific research community to provide current medical information and resources. The Foundation is working to make the 5K for Healthy Kidneys a national fundraising event. Last year, events were held in Tempe, Arizona and Moab, Utah. In 2009, the Foundation is planning on hosting four 5K events across the country. Proceeds will be used to support conferences to raise awareness, continue outreach, and sponsor a research workshop at the 2010 International Pediatric Nephrology Association Congress in New York City. The Foundation is also planning a Family Conference to bring together researchers, patients and their families, which will also be supported, through these fundraising campaigns. For more information on the Foundation and Alport Syndrome please visit www.alportsyndrome.org or contact Vint DeGraw at (435) 882-0597 or vdegraw@ alportsyndrome.org.

Utah Chemical Weapons Burner Among Nation’s Top Workplace Safety Sites DESERET CHEMICAL DEPOT, STOCKTON, Utah — Officials of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) today presented the agency’s highest workplace safety recognition to contractor workers at the Tooele Chemical Agent Disposal Facility (TOCDF), the U.S. Army chemical weapons incinerator complex located at Deseret Chemical Depot. In a double award presentation before about 400 workers at the sprawling depot 60 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, TOCDF Systems Contractor EG&G Defense Materials, Inc. (a subsidiary of URS Corporation’s EG&G Division), and Battelle Memorial Institute, EG&G’s analytical laboratory and air monitoring services subcontractor, both were formally inducted into OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) at the agency’s highest level - “Star.” The ceremony, attended by site workers, URS and Battelle corporate officials, U.S. Army leaders and other project stakeholders, concluded with a flag-raising just outside the TOCDF facility, with the American flag flanked by EG&G’s and Battelle’s new OSHA VPP Star flags. Together, EG&G and Battelle employ more than 1,000 workers at the TOCDF, where the Army’s single-largest stockpile of aging, deteriorating chemical weapons is being destroyed under the provisions of an international treaty. Following a February audit by a team of OSHA and private industry safety professionals, both contractor organizations were notified of their newly-earned status and today’s ceremony provided a forum for all participants to celebrate the achievements. Addressing employees, Randy Wotring, URS EG&G Division president, said, “All four of (URS EG&G Division’s) chemical demil sites are now

VPP Star sites. This one is extra special to me. This was led by our employees and a lot of work went into this... You’ve found a way to meet goals, to continue to make improvement and make it a safer work environment for all of our employees. The accomplishment also reflects the strong partnership between our employees, our subcontractors, our customers and the community.” Stephen Kelly, Battelle senior vice president and president of Battelle National Security Global Business, added, “We run a lot of tough, dangerous operations where complicated things go on, and I know how hard it is to reach a level of excellence that you have here, to attain VPP Star status. Among the many operations we operate, this is one of only a handful that have gotten to this point. Congratulations on that.” OSHA VPP officials reported only 2/10,000ths of one percent of U.S. workplaces are VPP sites at either the Star or lesser “Merit” levels. EG&G and Battelle reportedly are the 71st and 72nd Star worksites in OSHA’s Region 8, which comprises the states of Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and North and South Dakota. Only seven other workplaces in Utah have achieved VPP status at either the Star or Merit levels, and EG&G and Battelle now are the fifth and sixth Utah workplaces to achieve Star status.

Wash Laundry Worries Away Keeping the laundry piles manageable is easier when everyone pitches in
Meet the Candidates Night Grantsville Thursday, September 3rd - 7 pm Grantsville High Auditorium 155 E. Cherry Street, Grantsville Tooele Thursday, September 10th - 7 pm Tooele City Hall Council Chambers 90 North Main, Tooele
Come meet your candidates Public invited No charge for this event Sponsored by:
School is back in session, which means washing machines are probably back in spin cycle full-time. Soccer uniforms and school clothes will pile up quickly on top of your normal laundry heap. If you get your children involved in the process, you could cut your laundry workload in half. Follow these three steps to make dirty laundry less of a chore. Step 1 –Start with Sorting Put three (or more) plastic bins in your child’s bedroom or bathroom. Use one bin for colored clothes, one for whites and another for towels and jeans. If you have an athlete in the family, consider including another bin for uniforms to keep grass and mud from staining other clothes. Get creative to make the sorting bins more fun for young children. Use trash cans with plastic lids and draw faces on them with a permanent marker. You can also buy pre-decorated laundry bins at most major retailers. Step 2 – Set the Schedule Post a washing schedule above the dirty laundry bins. On the appropriate day, have your child carry the proper bin to the laundry room to be washed.
15 This will keep the dirty clothes pile manageable. Step 3 – Finish Up Encourage your child to help fold clothes. It’s not the most fun activity, but it gives you another chance to ask about his or her day at school. Reducing your laundry workload also relieves stress on your washer and dryer. The back-to-school season is one of the busiest times for washer repairs. Don’t try to squeeze as many clothes as possible into your washing machine, A normal load of laundry weighs about 12 pounds, but once the clothes are wet, they become twice as heavy. The cost of washing an extra load is far less expensive than a repair bill. Overloading a washing machine can lead to transmission and motor failure and broken drive belts. There are usually no warning signs — the machine just stops working. Check the efficiency of your laundry room. Preventative maintenance can save you money on your utility bill. For example, a clogged dryer vent can increase your overall utility bill by $7 per month. Use this checklist to see if your laundry room is costing you extra money. Replace washing machine hoses every three to five years to prevent flooding. Use cold water instead of hot, when appropriate. Your home’s hot water heater typically uses more energy than any other appliance.
