T

he Tooele County Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce the publication of the 2011 Tooele County Resource Directory. The original directory was published in 1992 as a service to the community to enable them to find local businesses and community phone numbers. The Directory was previously called the “Business and Visitors Guide”. The name was changed last year to give the magazine a new look and to remind residents and visitors that the publication should be used as a resource to find local information. The Chamber hopes that residents will use the Directory year round. This year’s cover highlights the purchase of the “old clinic” located at 154 South Main, Tooele, by the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce. When the remodeling of the building is completed this year, the building will house the Chamber offices as well as meeting rooms for Chamber members and public meetings. The Directory includes information about living in Tooele County and includes local city and community information including names of leaders, meeting times and important phone numbers. It also includes a section on Community Services and contact information as well as a special section on Healthcare and Education. A short history of Tooele County along with museums and other places to visit, parks and golf course info, scenic back

ways and places to engage in recreation, are included to inform visitors and residents of the many activities offered by our County. Information on the history of the “old clinic” building is also included in the Directory. This information was collected with the help of Alice

Dale of the Tooele County Historical Society and the members of the Tooele County Company of the Daughters of the Pioneers. The Directory also includes a section promoting Economic Development within the county SEE DIRECTORY PAGE 4 

and information about our military bases as well as the Utah Industrial Depot. The Directory will be used to inform companies what a great place Tooele County is to do business. Dining and lodging lists are incorporated into the Directory along with an alphabetical and category list of all Chamber members. Gold and Sustaining Chamber members are highlighted as well as restaurants and lodging facilities that belong to the Chamber.

A community calendar of events wraps up the Directory. 20,000 copies of the publication will be printed by Transcript Bulletin Publishing in early January 2011. The Directory will be distributed through brochure racks owned by the Chamber of Commerce and placed throughout the valley. It will also be mailed by request to those interested in visiting the County or relocating here. The Directory will be available to the public at the following locations: Tooele County Chamber of Com-

merce office located at 86 South Main, Tooele; Tooele City Hall (90 North Main), Tooele County Building (47 South Main, Tooele), Grantsville City Hall, (429 East Main, Grantsville); Soelbergs, (213 E Main, Grantsville), Macey’s Food & Drug (972 North Main, Tooele) and several other Chamber member businesses. The publication was created “in house” again this year and information was compiled and written by Chamber staff. Ads were sold by Chamber Director Debbie

Winn with help from Robert Niles, a Stansbury High School student who is completing an internship with the Chamber. Any profit from the Directory ad sales will be used to promote the Chamber and its members. Several Chamber members participated in putting the Directory together including Jackrabbit Press, who created some of the ads and Rick Pollock of 435 Design who designed and completed the layout of the Directory and also designed some of the ads.

Kathy Bolt Ambassador Vice Chair

A native of Tooele County, I was born in Tooele, but was raised and worked at Dugway Proving Ground for several years. I think Tooele County is a great place to live, work and play. I am currently a license Real Estate agent with Prudential Utah Real Estate. I love the Real Estate business, as I have the privilege of meeting so many new and wonderful people in the County. Getting involved in my community keeps my business strong and also give me the opportunity to contribute to the community that my family and friends live in. The Chamber Ambassador’s is a great group of fun and involved individuals that enjoy servicing in the community. I look forward to serving as the Ambassador Chair for the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce for 2011.

I was born and have lived most of my life in Tooele. I am married and have two children. Tooele is a great place to live, raise a family and work. I have worked in the Tooele community for 32 years. I am currently a Regional Manager for HeritageWest Credit Union and my branches include Tooele and Grantsville. I enjoy volunteer work and have a great time with the Tooele County Chambers Ambassadors. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet interesting people, to help each other and to better the community.

The 20 member Ambassador Committee for the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce has elected a new chair and vice chair for the year 2011. Sandy Critchlow, Prudential Utah Real Estate was elected to serve and chair and Kathy Boltz, HeritageWest Credit Union was elected to serve as vice chair. The positions are for a one year term. The mission of the Chamber Ambassador program is to serve as representatives and goodwill ambassadors welcoming new businesses to the area, nurturing and welcoming new Chamber Member and attending Chamber events when possible. The ambassadors welcome new members to the Chamber as well as contacting new members during their first year with the Chamber. They also participate in all Chamber functions such as Business-After-Hours, Ribbon Cuttings, Grand Openings, Luncheons, and events and mentor new members at each function or activity. Benefits of being a member of the Ambas-

sadors group includes: networking opportunities, increased community exposure, increased visibility, opportunity to earn the Ambassador of the Year Award at annual banquet and/or Ambassador of the quarter. An ambassador should be interested in community involvement and have future leadership potential for service on the Chamber Board or other Committee Chairs. An ambassador should be knowledgeable about Chamber services, programs and activities, and the business community. An ambassador should project a positive image for the company they represent and the Chamber. If you are interested in being a member of the Ambassador group, please contact Ambassador Chair Sandy Critchlow, Prudential Utah Real Estate, 435-882-4111 or the Chamber office (435) 882-0690.

January Business Spotlight wants to make sure that when you ship something it gets to its destination safe and secure that’s why everyone at The UPS Store knows how to skillfully pack a box. The UPS Store will take care of all your printing, copying, and shipping needs. If you are wondering how The UPS Store can help you, contact one of their friendly sales associates at 435-833-0501.

n a little strip mall just south of Cal Ranch is a little store that some of you may not even know is there, but for its loyal customers they do not know what they would do without The UPS Store for all their printing and shipping needs. Mike and Cindy Hollar own The UPS at 772 North Main Street here in Tooele. With Cindy as manager this business has stayed within the family for many years. Mike and Cindy decided to open the store in August of 1997 when Barrick Mining was going to close down and Mike knew he would not have a job anymore. They thought of moving to Elko Nevada so that Mike could work for Goldstrike Mining, but due to family circumstances it was a better choice for all to stay in Tooele. In 1997 when Mike and Cindy bought the store it was called “Mail Boxes Etc.” later, in 2002, the UPS franchise bought out Mail Boxes Etc. and the store became known as “The UPS Store” which is the current name today.

From left: Guy Hollar, Jasmine Bullock, Leslie Baird The UPS Store offers many services besides shipping. They offer copying and printing services including calendars, and photos. They print in both black and white and color and offer the lowest prices around. They also offer different office services such as faxing, and printing of documents which includes collating, three-hole punch and stapling, if needed, for no extra charge. Another great service they offer is mail box services. If you decide to open a mail box at The UPS Store, some of the advantages you will receive are: you will not

have a P.O. Box address; you will use The UPS Store’s street address as a return address. Therefore, mail can be accepted from all carriers including UPS, Fedex, and the US Postal Service. You are able to have a mail box away from your home so you know that your mail will stay safe even if you are on vacation. They have different box sizes so you can pick what size will fit you and your needs. Of course when it comes to your packing and shipping needs you want an expert to take of your valuable items that you are shipping. The UPS Store

Tooele County Chamber of Commerce

n October 2010, three weeks before the STS-133 launch of the Discovery Space Shuttle was planned to take place, I received an e-mail during my prep period informing me that the school that I teach at, Wendover High School (WHS), had been selected as one of nine schools in the Pacific Northwest to send students to the upcoming launch in Florida. It was first-come-first-served for the fifty seats on the bus to the launch viewing location. I raced down to my principal’s office to get permission, contacted the district, and quickly e-mailed a reply that WHS would like five seats on the bus for two teachers and three students. In 30 minutes, every seat on the bus was filled. WHS was going to have the opportunity to represent Utah. Three students from WHS, Baneza Montalvo, Esmeralda Arreola, and Mayra Rojas were selected to have this experience. The students worked very hard to raise the money and make their dream occur. They succeeded in raising all the needed funds in the small time frame of the three weeks until we left. They were willing to work hard to make sure that the money came in. In fact, in one day, they walked door-todoor selling chocolates and sold 20 pounds of them. I kept getting a phone call that they needed more chocolates. Due to the nature of a space shuttle launch, we planned our trip to

include a few extra days in case the launch was rescheduled. With these extra days we took the opportunity to give Baneza, Esmeralda, and Mayra a variety of educational experiences. We were able to go to Sea World, the Epcot Center, the Kennedy Space Center, the Astronaut Hall of Fame, and the Merritt Animal Refuge. In each of these excursions the girls learned tremendous amounts about subjects they had never been exposed to before. Unfortunately, in the end the launch was postponed beyond the scope of our visit, but the trip was not wasted since the girls had many life-changing cultural and academic experiences. Our experience was greatly enhanced by a journalist named Stephanie Donald who would have been the first journalist in space as she was the journalist selected to be the first journalist in space. However, due to the Challenger disaster the Civilian in Space program was dropped and she was unable to go. In spite of this setback, Stephanie spent her career as a journalist covering the space program, and, thus, knows more about the history of the space program than almost anyone. She provided marvelous opportunities for us including a personal tour of the Kennedy Space Center and a chance to see the two launch pads at Cape Canaveral from a distance.

As a result of this trip, all of us learned so much. I am proud of these students who walked around taking notes, asking questions, participating in all of the educational experiences, and taking pictures to document this opportunity while we were in Florida. It was thrilling to watch their excitement as they learned. The following are the students’ reflections of the trip.

Baneza Montalvo:

The first day in Florida we went to Sea World. We saw stingrays, dolphins, killer whales, sharks, manta rays, and manatees. The second day in Florida we went to Kennedy Space Center with Stephanie Donald, Cathy Collins, and Bekah J Collins. We got on a ride that simulates what it feels like to be in a shuttle launch. That ride was fun except it shook my cheeks too much. We also met Mitch Currah who helped the astronauts from Apollo 13 come back to Earth alive. Then

I saw the flag that symbolizes our progress in spaceflight program. It has reached space twice in the year of 1961 and 1995. Within that time 206 Americans left earth and 12 walked on the moon. PERHAPS later on this flag will be carried to Mars on it next voyage. It took ten thousand people to build the Hubble telescope and while it was in space something was wrong with the mirror so they had to install contact lenses to fix the blurriness. In 2013, the James Webb Space telescope will see beyond the Hubble telescope. This telescope will a replacement for the Hubble and will consist of infrared-optimized equipment. The infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum; electromagnetic wave frequencies below the visible range; “they could sense radiation in the infrared”. Electromagnetic radiation have wavelengths longer than visible light but shorter than radio waves. I had an unforgettable and education experience. It was disappointing not being able to see the shuttle launch but I learned things that were life changing. Overall, the most important thing I learned was go after what you

WHS Students receive check from Scentsy

George Terra, Scentsy Distributor, conducted a fundraiser to help the Wendover High students fulfill their dreams to attend a space shuttle launch. He presented the check to students Baneza Montalvo, Esmeralda Arreola and Mayra Rojas with help from their teacher Carolyn Bushman. The NASA Flag in picture was designed and created by WHS stu-

dent, Jamahl Middleton. It was taken up to the International Space Station (ISS) as part of Astronaut Magnus’s 1.5 personal belongings. It was flown when WHS students asked questions of Astronaut Magnus in a twenty minute downlink carried on NASA television in January of 2009. The Wendover High Seniors desired to Reach for the Stars and have Astronaut Magnus to be their graduation speaker. She was the speaker and returned the flag to us. The flag launched on Shuttle Eneavour November 14, 2008 then went on the ISS and returned to Earth on Discovery March 28, 2009. It was in space 134 days and traveled 50,304,000 miles.

astronaut give a talk. We also took a picture with him, Astronaut James Reilly. Then we went to a ride that there is in Kennedy Space Center; it’s called Shuttle launch experience. It felt like we were actually on a shuttle launch. Then we went to see the rocket garden. Yeah, I know it might sound weird but it’s a garden of pure rockets. It’s pretty cool. We also got to meet a hero, well a hero to me and to many other people. Why is he hero you ask me? He is a hero because he is one of the persons that helped get the astronauts of Apollo 13 (The Successful failure) get home. That is why he is a hero thanks to him he saved 3 astronauts. THANK YOU MITCH CURRAH. On the fourth day, went back to Kennedy Space Center. We also got to go to The Astronaut Hall of Fame. We got to see a lot of awesome stuff. Baneza and I got to get on a ride that was similar to what you feel g-force like when you are on an airplane. It was really cool. We also got to see the memorial of the astronauts whom had died.

We went to a planetarium it was really cool to see and learn about the planets. We also got to see a show about the constellations and laser mania. What we learned about the constellations was really cool, because after that we got to see Jupiter and four of its moons through the big telescope. It was really cool how we got to see Jupiter and how we were finding the constellations. Our last day we went to an airboat ride. It was really fun and cold. We actually got to see only one alligator that we named George. Esmeralda and I got to try alligator meat but it was deep fried. It was good, yum. We didn’t get to see what we wanted in the shuttle launch. However, we got to learn more than what we lost. I also learned that anything is impossible and that even the impossible is possible, and to never give up. Also if you work as a team you can do anything and anything is possible with team-work.
