Tooele County’s Premier Golfing Event

Thousands of Children Attend Annual Tooele County Chamber Easter Egg Hunt
T
housands of children in Tooele County, ages 3-11 participated in the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce/Mountain West Medical Center Annual Easter Egg Hunt. This annual event has been co-sponsored by Mountain West Medical Center and the Chamber of Commerce for many years. This is a fun way to show the community our combined commitment to Tooele County and our residents. Local businesses donated bicycles, gifts, candy and other prizes that were given away at the egg hunt. This event is totally funded by our generous local businesses! The event was held on Saturday April 23rd at the Deseret Peak Complex located on Hwy 112 between Tooele and Grantsville. Over 15,000 plastic eggs and candy bags were filled and ready for the children. Over 70 student volunteers from Tooele High, Tooele Jr. High, Stansbury High, Clarke Johnson Jr High and Tooele Boys and Girls Club Teen Center were all participants in this year’s Egg-Stuff-a-Ganza! The students were involved in organizations including Student

Government, Key Club, National Honor Society, Service Club, and Cheer Squad. The event was organized by Jamie Carter, Tooele City Library Director with help from one very awesome library volunteer named Dannie Libby from Stansbury. These students spent over 120 total hours stuffing eggs with prizes and candy! Kristen Linares, Tooele County School District Special Education Department staff member, also helped stuff eggs with the help of her students at Stansbury High, Grantsville High and Tooele High School. The event would not have been possible without the many
volunteers who helped organize and participate in the hunt. A heartfelt thanks to the Tooele City Fire Department for the fire engine siren which started the event, the staff of the Deseret Peak Complex for preparation of the complex and the sound system, the Tooele County Royalty and their advisor Cheryl Adams for handing out prizes, Tooele High School FBLA and Honor Society and their advisor Shauna Peterson, Tooele City Library and their egg stuffing partners, Tooele County Sheriff ’s Dept for traffic control, Rocky Mtn. Masonic Lodge for crowd control, Chamber Board members and
Ambassadors! The Easter Egg Hunt is a perfect example of how volunteers, businesses, and government leaders “Come Together” to serve the community residents. I
spent my childhood and teenage years here, in Tooele. Since then my life and career have taken many different unexpected turns: Dental hygiene school in Sheridan, Wyoming; 13 years working as a hygienist in Ogden, then suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome; night school at Weber State and a BS degree; program management job at Hill Air Force Base; laid off in reduction-inforce; to Baton Rouge, Louisiana for law school; decided that law school was not for me; back to dental hygiene
and recurring carpal tunnel syndrome; medical retirement; then, back to Tooele to care for an ill grandmother; and now a pet sitter. Pet sitting, for me, was a natural choice as a business. I have always had a love for animals, and I have always had pets at home. My grandfather had dogs, deer fawns, a raccoon, fox, rabbits, donkeys, and horses during my childhood. I raised a pig and twin lambs for high school FFA projects. My grandfather taught me to ride horses. I participated in the Jr. Bit and Spur, high school and college rodeo, and Utah and Idaho association rodeos.
I do not have a facility for boarding animals. Instead, I make visits to clients’ homes and care for their pets where they are in their familiar and comfortable surroundings. With all of the rural areas in the county, there is a need to care for the big, outdoor critters. Having the ability to care for these animals is what is unique about my services. An in home pet sitting service is not only needed when pet owner’s vacation or travel with their work. I walk dogs for people who work a ten hour day or have a long day because of commuting. Also, I can take pets to the vet or to be groomed during the client’s working hours. Another advantage of in home pet sitting is that I also do typical house sitting chores; mail and newspaper retrieval, putting the trash can out and in, opening and closing blinds, turning lights on and off, watering plants, etc. These things prevent residence from giving the appearance that no one is home. Summers and Holidays are my busiest times of the year. I am lucky that my sister cooks holiday dinners, otherwise, I would never get to eat because I am too busy feeding animals their holiday meals to cook. Most of the time, I have been able to handle the business alone. I have a good friend who helps me if I need her. I have come to love pets that I sit as much as their owners love them. It is fun getting to know the pet owners, too. Having a common love for animals, we naturally become friends. I have had the opportunity to experience all different breeds of dogs, from a Rhodesian Ridge hound to Yorkshire show dogs. They are all unique in their behavior and personalities. I have cared for a llama, turkeys, and have learned what fun a pet rat can be. My work seems more like play to me. With an enthusiastic dog licking my face and wagging their tail with delight, how can I not love it! Some of my clients have moved because of their employment. I have been in business long enough that some pets that I tend have died of old age. Thus, I am always open to new clients. I hope that my pet sitting business is one that I will never retire from.

County Commission Update: Keeping an eye on Spring Runoff By Wade Mathews Public Information Officer
T
he Tooele County Commission is vigilantly monitoring the potential for spring flooding this year. Commissioner Bruce Clegg and County Engineer Vern Loveless make regular patrols of specific areas of concern. However, while electronic news media are painting a gloomy picture on the Salt Lake City side of the Oquirrh Mountains, Clegg and Loveless agree that the situation in Tooele County is manageable. Long-time residents of Tooele County will remember the flooding of 1983. City streets were turned into roaring rivers. Roads and yards were washed out. Homes were flooded. People all around the Tooele Valley were recruited to fill sand bags. I remember getting out

of church early on a Sunday afternoon in Erda to go fill sand bags in Tooele. The good news is it’s unlikely that we’ll see a repeat of that disaster. Utah Snotel measurements indicate that the Oquirrh Mountains are at 145% of normal for water equivalent, the amount of water contained in the snow. That’s only about half of the water content we saw during the winter of 1982-1983. The only factor of real concern now is how fast the temperatures will increase and bring down the water that is up in the mountains. More recently, people will remember the flash flood of Memorial Day 2005. However, that was caused by a three hour continuous downpour, not spring runoff. Loveless points out that that’s a significant difference. “This is a
snow melt event, not a cloudburst. We can see flood conditions arise over days, not minutes,” he said. Commissioner Clegg added, “With this type of event we’ll have enough warning to take proactive measures if the water exceeds flood controls.” The other good news is that in the years after the floods of 1983, FEMA paid to install several new flood control measures in Tooele County. Those flood control measures include construction of a ditch and dike designed to divert water coming out of South Willow and North Willow Canyons away from residences and towards Tooele Army Depot and an aquifer recharge zone (absorption area) just south of SR-112; installation of larger culverts under SR-36 north

Continued from page 6 of the viaduct and near 700 South; installation of larger drainage pipes on the south side of Tooele; and excavation of deeper flood control channels along the border between Tooele City and Erda. In spite of the positive outlook, city and county engineers, public works and roads employees, irrigation company managers, and emergency management are working hard to mitigate any potential flood waters. Recent mitigation efforts include inspecting and maintaining the flood control measures installed with FEMA funding, cleaning drainage ditches and flood control channels, and filling sand bags. There are several areas that officials are focusing on right now. They are Settlement Canyon, Middle Canyon, the South Willow Canyon and North Willow

Tooele County Chamber of Commerce Canyon drainage, Ophir Canyon, Hickman Canyon, and the Vernon drainage. So far none of those areas are showing any signs of flooding. Commissioner Clegg is working closely with Tooele County Emergency Management (TCEM) and with other officials to coordinate snow melt information weekly. TCEM creates a SitRep or Situation Report, containing details of the current situation and mitigation efforts. That SitRep is distributed to, and reviewed by, all local governments. TCEM has also supplied more sand bags to local municipalities, and is documenting efforts in case an emergency is declared and reimbursement is available. You may be wondering what you can do to help. As for any natural hazard potential, have a family disaster plan and disaster supplies kits; maintain situational awareness, meaning be aware of what’s going on around you;
consider purchasing flood insurance; report areas of concern to your local government officials; and monitor warning systems if an emergency does occur. People are also encouraged to organize cleanup efforts to remove trash, weeds, and other debris from gutters, storm drains, and drainage ditches that may exist around your home or in your neighborhood. ay 3-5 is the upcoming annual Tooele County School District CTE Fair. This is a great opportunity for parents, students, and community members to view projects showing what is being taught in our CTE classes. them. We have a new venue for showing our fair. It will be held this year at the new Tooele Community Learning Center at 211 South Tooele Blvd. from 4:00 – 8:00 pm. The reception will be held on Wednesday, May 4 at 7:00 pm honoring outstanding students, teachers, and businesses. Please come and enjoy the work created by our students and teachers.
Ambassador of the quarter Kathy Boltz
K
athy Boltz has been named the Ambassador of the 1st Quarter 2011 for the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce Ambassador’s group. Kathy is Regional Manager at HeritageWest Credit Union and is currently serving as Vice-Chair of the Chamber Ambassadors. Kathy is a great volunteer member of the Chamber and also serves as a volunteer in the community. She is involved with the HeritageWest Community Involvement Committee, a member of the Mountain West Medical Center Healthy Women Advisory Board, serves on the St. Marguerites Church finance committee and is always willing to serve her community where she is needed. The Chamber appreciates Kathy for her great contributions of time and effort to the Chamber and its members.

Clerks Corner Redistricting Now that the legislative session is over, the redistricting begins. The legislature is required to have the senate and congressional lines to the county clerk’s by Marilyn Gillette October, 2011. The clerk’s have until January 31, 2012 to complete the county redistricting. Included in that time frame is the redistricting of voting precincts as well as school board precincts. However, before anything is finalized, there will be a number of public meetings to get input from the citizens on proposed plans. As soon as the meeting schedule is set, it will be posted on the clerk’s website, in the Transcript Bulletin and anywhere else we can think to put it. By-Mail Voting Voters who are signed up to vote by mail in each election will soon be receiving your “Voter Verification Form”. This form is sent to voters on the “Permanent By-Mail” list to ensure that you are still at your current address. Please sign the form, make any changes, and return it to the Clerk’s Office by the end of May. Municipal and Special Service District elections will be held this year. If you are not on the “Permanent By-Mail” list and would like to vote by mail, please go to http://www. co.tooele.ut.us/Clerk/voter.htm. Miscellaneous All Tooele County Business License’s expire June 30th of each year. Renewal’s will go out the first part of May. Come and try out the new elevator in the county building! Thanks to HAVA (Help America Vote Act) funds we received a grant for $115,000 to help pay for a new ADA approved elevator. So come on up and take a ride!
