November 2010

The Tooele County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism has embarked on a Capital Building fund campaign. The purpose of the campaign is to raise funds to finish the construction of a permanent home for the Chamber. This fund was started

many years ago by some of the founding members. Their contributions made it possible to purchase the building and do the initial work. The Chamber of Commerce and its Board are determined to secure the additional funds to continue their vision. This building, when completed, will allow us as a Chamber to continue to serve the business community and promote tourism through our welcome center for Tooele County. The Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit organization, not a government body with taxing authority. The Chamber functions from the dues of its members and fund raising events. Funds raised by the Chamber have been rolled back into promotional venues for businesses such as the “Business Expo – Taste of Tooele,” “Come Together SEE CHAMBER PAGE 4 

Employee of the month! Brian Beynon, employee at Energy Solutions, is the November 2010 Employee of the Month. He was nominated by Jesse Garcia, Director of Mixed Waste Operations for Energy Solutions, Clive Facility. Jesse had this to say about Brian: “Brian is a Foreman at the Clive site. During the past year, Brian’s manager has received temporary assignments for the projects in other parts of the US. In his absence, Brian has worked hard to keep the operation going safely and compliantly. As a result of Brian’s tremendous attention to detail, the facility received a very favorable assessment (Zero violations) from state regulators during their annual inspection. Brian has been the Chairperson of the Clive Site Safety Action

Team for the past two years. In his position, he has played a pivotal role in helping the facility meet its goal of zero Lost Time incidents. Brian’s commitment to the company is exemplary. In 2009, Brian had no absences and was involved in the Salt Lake County Corporate Games as Captain of the EnergySolutions 5K and mountain biking teams. I believe Brian is deserving of this recognition and I appreciate his hard work, dedication and commitment to getting the job done safely and compliantly.” Congratulations Brian, for going above and beyond your job description! The Stansbury Art and Literary Society was recently formed by Pat Jessie, former award winning fine arts photographer, and Marianne Rutishauser, an accomplished watercolor painter. The idea for this came about after it was realized how few venues there were in the area where they could display their art work. The lack of venues for all the talented people living in Tooele County was the impetus to form this organization. Whether one is an amateur or professional in the arts, there is a need to reinvigorate the creative process. One of the ways to do this is by feedback from others when works of art are displayed. Another is through an organization where people interested in art can gather with these talented people to promote ideas to get the community interested in non-profit cultural events.

For artists to grow, no matter the medium, there is a need to belong to an artistic community. Our aim is to bring the arts into this community then reach out to the larger community. This will bring people together through the arts which, in turn, can revive and enrich community life. It would also encourage the formation of a Tooele County Art Council as an umbrella organization over the nonprofit cultural organizations. This would provide another avenue to seek funding from outside sources for arts, music, drama, prose and poetry. It would be most beneficial for all local organizations that fall within these categories. For further information or to become a member, call Pat Jessie at 882-0593 or Marianne Rutishauser at 882-1485. All are welcome. Art nurture the soul and this organization can provide the creative opportunities to bring arts into the community.

On October 4, 2010, at Energy Solution’s Clive Facility, Energy Solutions presented a check for $4,000 to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. General Manager, Jeff Gardner and Heavy Equipment Foreman, Larry Walton and RMEF Tooele Chapter member, Pam Brunson presented a check to Bill Christensen, Regional Director for RMEF. The RMEF has completed almost a million acres of wildlife habitat projects in Utah since 1987. Many of these projects include locations in Tooele County. Christensen said, “Energy Solutions is a great conservation partner! We are pleased to work with them to enhance and promote wildlife conservation in Tooele County.

County Commission Update:

Seeking Solutions to the RMP Project Our efforts to oppose a small section of Rocky Mountain Power’s transmission line project in Tooele County have resulted in some positive headway. We’d like to bring you up to date on this far-reaching issue. First of all, everyone knows we use and need electric power in Tooele County. Long gone are the days when electricity was a convenience; it’s now an expected basic need in society. As Tooele County’s Commissioners, we don’t object to additional electrical infrastructure being built in the county. We benefit from electrical power. We want and need new economic development and that requires more electricity. However, we have been and remain opposed to the South Bench route of Rocky Mountain Power’s (RMP) proposed transmission line route through Tooele County. It’s important to note that the South Bench route is only a small percentage of the total RMP project. After all other attempts at talks and negotiations with RMP have failed we have been forced to take legal action. We have appealed the State Facility Review Board’s decision which ordered the county to issue a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) to RMP. That appeal is still pending before the Utah Court of Appeals. The day before the county would have been required to issue the CUP to RMP, in compliance with the Facility Review Board order, Tooele City sued Tooele County in Third District Court, seeking injunctive relief. Rather than being a hostile action, the injunction was intended to prohibit the county from issuing the CUP. We are pleased that the District Court recognized the importance of the issues raised by Tooele City and Tooele County by granting the requested injunction. Tooele City’s lawsuit highlights the gap between the CUP process and the Facility Review process. That is one of the many issues we are raising with our appeal. Most recently the Third District Court denied RMP’s motion to dismiss Tooele City’s lawsuit against Tooele County.

We remain optimistic that a settlement can be reached with RMP that would address our concerns with the South Bench route. A huge cooperative effort exists between all affected local governments, specifically Tooele County, Tooele City and Grantsville City,

and concerned citizens groups from both cities with the common goal of changing RMP’s proposed route along the South Bench. These groups are not just complaining for the sake of complaining. They have valid concerns and have offered legitimate suggestions that RMP summarily rejected. As a Commission we have spent countless hours considering and drafting alternate routes, all of which were rejected by RMP. Numerous negative impacts have been identified. We want to emphasize that we believe the proposed South Bench route of the RMP project is detrimental to public health, to the water shed, and to the view shed. As the Third District Court Judge found in issuing the restraining order prohibiting our issuing the CUP, the Facility Review Board failed to consider

the environmental issues and other impacts along the proposed route. Everyone needs to remember that it is RMP that has insisted on moving forward with the South Bench route. RMP is the applicant for the CUP and it is incumbent upon RMP to revise its application. As commissioners we have been involved with this issue from the beginning. We have participated in numerous discussions about this project and have attended the public meetings and Planning and Zoning meetings when this project was considered. What you may not know is that not only have we had discussions with RMP officials, but we have had a special meeting with the President of RMP. We have also met with the state director of the Bureau of Land Management (the agency responsible for the Environmental Impact Statement regarding the RMP project). We have pursued efforts on all levels, which have been necessary and effective in bringing the issue to its current situation. We will continue to work on this issue on all fronts. We strongly believe that a solution can be found that will satisfy all parties.

What is all this construction along Main Street? The construction activity is associated with the laying of underground fiber optic communications cables by a local company called Beehive Broadband. Who is Beehive Broadband? Beehive Broadband is a new brand for Wireless Beehive and its sister company Beehive Telephone Company. In short it reflects our vision of providing a “fiber to the home” or business broadband connection to each subscriber. Beehive Broadband is the fiber optic division of Wireless Beehive. What is Broadband? Broadband is a catch-all term being used to describe any type of high speed data or internet connection. One of our companies, Wireless Beehive, delivers broadband over a high speed wireless connection. DSL and cable modems are also considered Broadband. Our fiber division Beehive Broadband delivers broadband over fiber optic cables. What is fiber? Fiber optic cables are made of ultra pure glass. A strand of fiber is about the same size as a strand of hair. It is surprisingly flexible but will snap if bent too sharply. These strands serve as literal pipes for photons or “packets of light” which can convey information. Why fiber? If we could compare a connection to the internet to a water system, a dial up modem would be a garden hose. A DSL or cable modem connection would be a fire hose. A fiber connection could transport the entire Colorado River with room to spare. Physicists have not yet discovered the upper limit of capacity for a fiber optic cable. Who needs fiber? Our lowest speed plan we sell on our business system is 20 Mbps. That is more than our whole company used just a few years ago. There are many things driving the need for speed. The medical profession is transporting an ever in-

creasing amount of medical imagery over broadband connections. Businesses are using more security cameras that use the internet than ever before. Many business owners now have the ability to look at all their cameras from anywhere. We have seen the rise and fall of video rental stores. One popular company,

limit. 70 Gbps systems are currently in use in our system and we can go up from there. In reality, we can deliver whatever is needed. In almost all cases delivered on one single strand of glass. Is this expensive? That depends. Compared to a dial up modem connection, YES. Compared to a traditional T1

Netflix, is moving entirely toward sending movies over the internet. In order to view a Netflix movie without interruption and at HD quality, one needs a fairly high speed connection to the internet. As time goes on demand increases. We are surfing the leading edge of that demand. Why Beehive Broadband? Not all fiber optic broadband systems are equal. Most have fiber optic cables only along main trunk areas but the connection to the home or business is via copper telephone lines or coaxial cable TV lines. Beehive Broadband takes the fiber clear to the home or business using underground cables. That makes us unique among service providers and removes any upper limit on speed. As a matter of fact, our fiber to the home and business systems start with speeds other systems top out at. The native speed of the connection to a home or business is 2.4 Gbps. That is throttled down to the speed the customer actually purchases. If someone needs more than 2.4 Gbps, we can switch to 10 Gbps with little effort. But that is not the

connection from the phone company, NO. Not only NO but HECK NO. 50 Mbps is more than 32 times faster than a T1. And we can frequently deliver that speed for a quarter or half the cost of a traditional T1 connection. That means a 64 to 128 times more value for your dollar. If this was gasoline, a T1 would be a gallon of gas for $3.00. Our connection would be 100 gallons of gas for that same $3.00 What are the install fees? Depending on what you need and your distance from our ex-

isting cables, installation runs between $1000 - $3000 in most cases. There are discounts available for long time customers of Wireless Beehive. Is it available everywhere? Everywhere we have a cable. We are continually growing the tendrils of the system. We have wide coverage in Lake Point, Erda, and throughout the Tooele main street area. We go through Grantsville; we serve the Miller Motorsports area and are building more each day. For residential customers, we generally require a pocket of 6 customers all within ¼ mile of each other before we will extend the main line. Our system extends to downtown Salt Lake City with many business customers there as well. For companies needing interconnection between their site in Tooele Valley to other sites in Utah and Idaho we partner with a regional company that can generally reach those areas we cannot. So the general answer is a qualified yes, it is available everywhere. Beehive Broadband is proud to offer the Tooele Valley the best services available. Residences in this area have more and better communication options than most other Utah communities, including Salt Lake City.

Local Dairy wins National Award Shepherds Dairy Products, located in Erda, took a 1st Place at the National American Cheese Society competition on August 28, 2010 in Seattle Washington. The competition was fierce with over 1450 entries from Canada, Mexico and the United States. Shepherds Dairy Products was awarded first place in the Cheese Spreads Open Category for their goats milk cheese. The American Cheese Society is an active, not for profit trade organization that encourages the understanding, appreciation, and promotion of farmstead and natural specialty cheeses produced in the Americas and Canada. By providing an educational forum for cheesemakers and cheese

enthusiasts, the Society fills an important gap in today’s specialty food world. Unlike other cheese competitions, where cheeses are graded down for technical defects, the American Cheese Society’s goal is to give positive recognition to those cheeses that are of the highest quality in their aesthetic evaluation (i.e. flavor, aroma, and texture), as well as their technical evaluation. As a result, the highest quality cheeses are those that the Society feels deserve the recognition of an American Cheese Society award, based on a minimum number of points awarded (totaling 100 points possible) for First, Second, or Third Place.

Congratulations to Vaughn Oborn for this recognition. Shepherds Dairy Products cheese is sold at Macey’s here in Tooele and is also served at Sostanza.

and diseases, proper tool sanitation and skin and nail care. Students learn to give manicures and pedicures, apply artificial nails and identify problems with nail health. Students are closely supervised by instructor Lyle Ferguson. Lyle has over 20 years of industry experience and 21 years of teaching experience. Lyle also holds a Utah Cosmetology/Barber Instructor

License and a Utah State Office of Education’s Professional Education License. Bonnie Perkins of La Chic Image Salon in Tooele is job shadowing Lyle while she obtains her instructor’s license, and plans to employ students in her salon after graduation. Students are enjoying the state-of-the-art facility at the Community Learning Center, and speak very highly of Mr. Ferguson and his techniques. As most students plan to have their own salon some day, they all agreed it is important to have hands-on experience in every aspect of salon management. A visitor to the class can typically see someone having their hair cut or colored, men and women having their hair styled, students practicing on mannequins and someone else having their nails done; all while the instructor moves from station to station, checking on each student’s work. If you’re interested in becoming a state licensed Cosmetologist/ Barber, or would like to experience salon services for yourself or family, please contact the TATC at 435-248-1800 for more information.

Allison Vokac, Fret-less Violin Hi! Allison Vokac here, owner of Fret-less Violin… I know learning how to play the violin can be challenging, especially for younger children. Since I started violin lessons at age seven, I completely understand the patience and discipline it takes to become a successful violinist. It is critical that a good foundation is put in place for beginning students. This enables them to develop good habits, and be successful with each phase of playing the violin. I have played in many orchestras, one of which was the Civic Orches-

tra, the Youth Orchestra of the Chicago Symphony. I have learned those skills and what it takes to play in an orchestra. I have a twenty year background from which to address specific needs of each student, and I incorporate all of my experiences as a traditional violin coach… which results in the student being successful and playing the violin without struggling. Fret-less Violin offers private coaching for beginners and intermediates. Call for your complimentary session today. Allison Vokac 435-249-0041

Realtor of the Year

Finding Good Employees Just Got Easier The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has recently launched an exciting new website to help employers find quality candidates and job seekers find employment opportunities. The new LDSjobs.org is not only a global search engine but a place for candidates to post profiles for potential employers. Many companies are no longer posting positions but shopping in the database and directly contacting candidates. Employers can now search for candidates without officially posting a job. Finding good employees who will make a positive contribution to your operation is a difficult challenge. LDS Employment Resource Services (ERS) can help reduce your hiring risks by connecting you with a workforce of people who have been taught the principles of reliability, responsibility, and continued improvement. The benefits to employers of registering on LDSjobs.org are Access Talent — Create a

profile to begin accessing ERS’ worldwide database of candidates. Advance Your Opportunities — Communicate your employment opportunities. Achieve Your Goals — Reduce the time and cost of hiring good employees. The site is open to the community and members of all faiths. The service is cost free to both job seekers as well as employers. We invite you to learn more about this business resource by attending a presentation put on by a Professional Staff Member of the ERS team. The presentation will be sponsored by the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce and will be held on Tuesday, November 9th from 8:00 am to 9:00 am. The meeting will be held at the Tooele County Emergency Management Building located at 15 East 100 South, Tooele. There is no charge for this event and is open for all Chamber members and prospective members.

CMA Reaches 80 Percent Chemical Weapons Destruction Mark US A r m y C h e m i c a l Ma te ri a l s Ag e ncy Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. – The U.S. Army Chemical Materials Agency (CMA) announced today that on Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010, they achieved the destruction of 80 percent of the U.S. chemical agent stockpile since Entry-Into-Force, when the United States ratified the Chemical Weapons Convention treaty in April 1997. CMA Director Conrad Whyne said, “This is another positive step in meeting the treaty and our commitment to the American people to safely dispose of the stockpile of chemical weapons. It is the direct result of the dedicated efforts of the government and contractor

personnel at CMA who day-by-day safely store and destroy the stockpile.” Eighty percent represents the destruction of 24,488 tons of agent and more than 2.1 million munitions. CMA reached the 50 percent milestone in December 2007, the 60 percent destruction mark in April 2009 and 75 percent destruction in July 2010. While not a treaty-mandated achievement, 80 percent demonstrates the United States continuing progress in fulfilling its international obligations to destroy the chemical weapons stockpile. CMA is on pace to meet the 90 percent

milestone by April 2012. The U.S. Army Element Assembled Chemical Weapons Alternatives (ACWA) program isresponsible for destroying the remaining 10 percent. CMA’s progress is reflected in the fact that neutralization sites at Aberdeen, Md., and Newport, Ind., as well as the incineration site at Johnston Atoll in the Pacific Ocean, have successfully destroyed their chemical warfare materiel stockpiles and are closed. CMA’s four remaining sites at Anniston, Ala.; Pine Bluff, Ark.; Tooele, Utah and Umatilla, Ore., continue their final agent campaigns—destroying blister agent. Earlier this

year CMA’s Non-Stockpile Chemical Materiel Project completed a mission at the Pine Bluff Explosive Destruction System site, destroying more than 1,200 recovered munitions. CMA remains committed to the safe and timely destruction of the nation’s chemical agent and chemical warfare materiel, and continues to safely store chemical agent munitions at the ACWA sites near Richmond, Ky., and at Pueblo, Colo.
