en days of fun, competition and camaraderie characterized the First Annual Tooele County Corporate Games. Patterned after the Olympic Games and similar events in other counties, the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce spearheaded a wonderful opportunity for employees of local companies to compete and collaborate in 11 separate ‘sporting’ events (see list below). With the Deseret Peak Complex as the primary venue, the games were a fitting lead-in to the festivities of the Tooele County Fair. Additional venues were All Star Lanes, Miller Motorsports Park, Oquirrh Hills Golf Course and the Tooele Gun

EnergySolutions volunteered to be the main sponsor of this year’s event to get things rolling. “Once the planning committee got a basic plan together, it was really cool to see the other companies in our area get excited about this fun event and really pitch in to help”, said Jan Hatfield of EnergySolutions and coordinator of the event. Employee of the month! Autumn Riding, employee at the Pratt Aquatic Center, is the September 2010 Employee of the Month. She was nominated by Mel Roberts. Mel had this to say about Autumn: “Autumn is the mother of six children and working on her teaching degree at the Utah State University Tooele campus. She took the Life Guard Training class in the spring of 2008 and was hired as a lifeguard in the summer of 2008. Since then she has become certified as a Water Safety Instructor. Autumn is always willing to work whenever her busy schedule allows. Presently at the aquatic
center she serves as a life guard, swimming instructor, age group swimming coach and fills in at the front desk when needed. I have been most impressed with her work ethics. She is always doing above and beyond what her job calls for. If she is guarding, she also cleans. When she is in the office, she learns the names of the patrons and makes them feel welcome. She will put in extra time to help students in her classes learn skills they are having a difficult time with. As a coach,
Autumn Riding, Employee of the Month
she takes a personal interest in each of her swimmers and uses her experience to help make them excited about competitive swimming.” Congratulations Autumn, for going above and beyond your job description and for providing customers and co-workers with great customer service! Denny’s is the 2010 sponsor for the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce employee of the month. Autumn (pictured on the right, receives her $20 gift card from Lisa LaFleur (left), manager
at Denny’s in Tooele. All Chamber members may nominate an employee to receive this award. Winners will receive a $20 gift card for Denny’s along with a tshirt and other gift items. Mountain America Credit Union For your home, your business, your life For over a decade Mountain America Credit Union has been helping the good people of Tooele with your financial needs. A lot has changed since we opened our first branch 12 years ago in the strip mall by Wal-Mart. The credit union has evolved into the Mountain America you know today—with 63 branches in four states, 343,000 members and $2.8 billion in assets. Mountain America’s philosophy of ‘People Helping People’ holds true as we focus on quality and convenience for our members. Everyday we help our members with everything from basic savings and checking accounts to auto loans and investments. We’re also here for the business community offering services such as business checking and deposit accounts. As the top credit union SBA lender in the country, MACU has been highlighted in Entrepreneur magazine and the Wall Street Journal. “We work hard to uphold that philosophy,” says branch manager, Kristian King. “Our member service is our top priority. We take care of our members as if they were family.” Family is just one thing that Kris is passionate about. He also cares strongly about his community. When he isn’t helping members at the credit union or spending time with his family, Kris serves in various community organizations such as the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis and the Exchange Clubs. “It’s nice to be able to give back to the community that has supported Mountain America for all these years,” says Kris. Many things have changed over the years, but our philosophy hasn’t. We promise to always uphold the tradition of people helping people for many decades to come.

Continued from page 1 weather passed and the sunshine returned, they continued the competition with Cargill Salt finally emerging victorious. Weather took its toll again with the Go-Kart event which had to be rescheduled until August 12 due to rain. Unfortunately, the schedule change kept some teams from competing, but when the smoke had cleared and the dust settled the difference between the winning team and last place was a slim 4.8 seconds. Congratulations to Cargill Salt who now owns bragging rights as the speediest company in the county. Not surprisingly some of the

teams, the weather created a real sense of “togetherness” as participants huddled under a couple of 10 X 10 canopies during a 30 minute delay resulting from hail and rain. However, in true competitive form, as soon as the
most popular events were the Trap Shoot, Bowling and Go Karts. Each of these events had at least 13 teams competing. In what has become a trademark of the Tooele Business Community, along with a fun, competitive

attitude, there was an amazing spirit of camaraderie between the competing companies. This was most obvious during the Scavenger Hunt. Several teams made calls to competitors offering to help them with one item they needed in return for help on one that they didn’t have. EnergySolutions narrowly edged out Wal-Mart Logistics by 2 points for the Corporate Cup with Cargill Salt taking a strong 3rd. The Sportsmanship Award went to Macey’s and the Volunteer of the Year went to a Macey’s employee, Shannon Proctor. With an experienced planning committee in place and this year’s dramatic success to build upon, we expect to make this an annual event. We hope even more chamber

The recent drop in temperatures reminds us that fall is right around the corner. Before we know it, the leaves will be changing colors, and hunters will be taking to the field. Tooele County is recognized for its beautiful vistas from a striking, red sunset over the Stansbury Mountains to a brilliant morning in Settlement Canyon with the ridges ablaze with orange, red, and yellow hues. The County Commissioners, along with Tooele County Parks and Recreation and the Tooele County Trails Committee are trying to make those beautiful scenes more accessible by identifying and marking old trails and creating and designating new trails. This is a work in progress. The Trails Committee created a master trails plan that is a working document, updated as new trails are identified and marked. That plan includes trails to connect communities with each other, trails to connect communities with Deseret Peak Complex, and continued access to a maintained system of trails for motorized (ATV, motorcycle, snowmobile) and non-motorized (equestrian, hiking, biking, skiing) use in the mountains and along the foothills. The County Commission and Trails Committee are currently working with private land owners to preserve access to public lands by controlling access to private land, marking trails, producing maps and policing the trail system. These steps

will help to reduce or eliminate abuse to private and public lands due to property and environmental damage, vandalism, and trash left behind. Our Parks and Recreation Department maintains the trail system and identifies trailheads with kiosks. Currently we have kiosks marking
the trailheads at both ends of the Mid-Valley Trail between Tooele and Deseret Peak Complex, at the mouth of Middle Canyon, on the new Grantsville to Deseret Peak Trail at Durfee Street and SR112, on the new East Bench Trail (in progress) at Droubay Road and Lasslee Lane, at the walking trail on Stansbury Island, on three trails in Ophir Canyon and in Dry Canyon on the Jacob City Loop Trail. More kiosks will be added as other existing and new trails are identified for public use, such as the Parkway trail between Sheep Lane and Droubay Road. You can check out our master trails plan
on our website at www.co.tooele.ut.us. Hover over the Parks and Recreation tab. Click on Tooele County Trails, then click on the Master Plan tab at the top of the new page. You will find a presentation and a map showing the Tooele County Trail System. If you’re interested in getting involved, the next two Trail Committee meetings are September 2 and October 7 at 3:00 p.m. in the Deseret Peak Complex offices. Groups and families can also help by participating in our Adopt-a-Trail program to maintain and clean a specific trail. Call 843-4001 for more information. We appreciate the cooperation of the private landowners and other government agencies to identify and provide these valuable recreation resources. You can do your part by observing the trail signs, staying on designated trails, not creating new cuts or trails into the environment, picking up trash, and staying off private lands. That way we will all benefit through the existence of the Tooele County Trails System for years to come.

EnergySolutions, Why are you in Moab? Many people don’t know that EnergySolutions is a respected environmental clean-up firm, with successful projects all over the world. This includes our work in Moab, where the Department of Energy enlisted EnergySolutions to clean up 130 acres near the banks of the Colorado River. There, we’re removing uranium mill tailings left over from past mining operations before they can affect the beautiful natural surroundings. It’s also an endeavor giving a welcome boost to the local economy, providing jobs for over 300 employees and numerous independent contractors. It’s not all we do, but our work in Moab is an important example of how our global expertise benefits Utah.

July 16, 2010 Mountain West Medical Center Attn: Kelly Duffin 2055 N. Main Street Tooele, UT 84074 Dear Kelly: I just wanted to tell you thank you for the wonderful customer service and personal attention I have received from Mountain West Medical Center recently. Rather than travel to Salt Lake City for a procedure, you were able to match the price, which allowed me to keep the money here in Tooele County, as well as being much more convenient for me. The customer service that I received from the billing department, as well as the surgery staff was what has always given Tooele County a small town feel. I then encountered an emergency situation which Dr. Webber was marvelous in taking care of for me. As we have discussed, my Mother loves the attention she receives in the hospital, even spending her latest birthday there. Each of these situations have made me glad to have a marvelous hospital here in Tooele County, along with a terrific staff.
Thank you for your personal attention, please thank your staff for me.
Sincerely, Marilyn K. Gillette
