However, there is quite a distance between wanting to throw a great summer party and actually pulling it off. So we'll look at some of the big challenges summer party hosts may face. When it comes to planning a summer party, lifestyle expert Ceci Carmichael recently told blogger Candace Rose Anderson that people avoid entertaining because they just think it’ll be so full of stress and they’re not going to have a good time anyway. Carmichael's best advice—plan ahead. That means two weeks out get your list all set, get your menu all set and then along the way take bite size chunks out of it so that the day before you aren't walking a tightrope between vacuuming
and cooking at the same time. Party planner to the stars Mindy Weiss (stylemepretty.com) advises aspiring party hosts to mind these tips: Freshen up with Color: Don’t be afraid to add pop to your party with bright colors. Purchase a fun, colored table runner for outdoor tables and a set of patterned napkins for a fresh look. Include a few brightly colored dinner plates alongside basic white dishes. That simple pop of color adds excitement to the table. Plan a Picnic in Your Own Backyard: Surprise your guests by setting up an outdoor picnic area. Spread multi-colored throws, blankets even large quilts on your grass and add bright colored pillows. The “eclectic look” is in! Place fun trays on the blankets
filled with guacamole and chips or bottles of water and glassed bottled soda pop. Light up the Garden: Lanterns placed throughout your outdoor area are always noticed! They can hang from gazebos or line the walkway into the party. These lanterns use battery-powered candles as an alternative to regular candles… they’re gorgeous and are safe too! Invest in a Bar Cart: Freshen up your bar by adding a bar cart to the area where your guests are gathering. The bar cart can be filled with alcoholic drinks for the party goers, or for an outdoor family event try beautiful pitchers of lemonade or iced lavender hibiscus tea. A BACK-UP POWER GENERATOR. They’re an easy upgrade: you pretty much have to buy one and put it outside or in your basement with proper ventilation. Generators play especially well in areas regularly brutalized by storms or bad winter weather.
ROOFING REPLACEMENT. There's a reason this ultimate "curb appeal" enhancer consistently makes remodeling's list: a roof is the first thing prospective buyers notice even before exiting their cars, and you can kiss that sale goodbye if yours looks like it's been battered and beaten.
A HOME-OFFICE REMODEL. We know what you're thinking: With so many more people working from home, wouldn't it be brilliant to rewire the space for electronic equipment, say, and install commercial-grade carpeting? Not really. The magazine gave it the lowest return on investment (48.9 percent), and the guy who oversaw the study says, "Home offices don't sell houses."
MAJOR BATHROOM WORK. "You could install the most spectacular jetted tub, and it still might not suit a buyer," says Patsy O'Neill, a sales associate in Montclair, N.J. "Meanwhile, you'd have spent tens of thousands of dollars."
MAJOR KITCHEN RENOVATIONS. Again, the key word is "major," and again it's a "taste" issue. You could put in the appliances and cabinets you think look great, only for a potential buyer to hate them.

1. Goldenrod

Goldenrod is so easy to grow that some people call it a weed; it springs up practically everywhere once planted. If you don't mind prolific yellow tufts that look cheerful in the late summer afternoons, then you'll love goldenrod. These flowers top out at a couple feet high and bring lots of pollinators like butterflies and honeybees to your garden, so other plants will naturally grow and flourish.
2. Juniper
Juniper bushes are evergreen, providing a perfect backdrop for other plants during their growing and dormancy cycles. Whether it's in the dead of winter or summer, you'll have these fragrant and green bushes to look at. If you're into attracting nature, you'll especially love juniper; it was named one of the top 10 wildlife-friendly plants.
Baby's breath is ideal for garden filler flowers, bouquets, drying, and water-conscious people. This low-growing plant blooms all throughout summer and comes back each spring to do it all over again.
4. Purple Coneflower (Echinacea) For a flower with healing powers, it's amazing the purple coneflower doesn't need much TLC itself. This flower loves full sun and soil that's part sand, clay, and silt (loamy). Plant purple coneflowers in the summer, water until they're established, and then enjoy purple, red, pink, and white flowers every summer and fall thereafter. Echinacea is beloved by butterflies too, and grows well in nearly all hardiness zones.
SOUTHWEST 5. Desert Zinnia
Seeing lush, beautiful blooms in the desert is a real treat, which is what makes the desert zinnia so rewarding. Just plant the desert zinnia once, and you can watch it bloom for months each year with little to no effort on your part. It's perfect for hot, dry, and sandy Southwestern states because it can withstand droughts and it comes back each year. Plus, its flowers are bright white, so they integrate easily into your other landscaping plans and color schemes. Start these plants from seeds and enjoy them for years to come.
6. Prickly Pear
The prickly pear is a cactus—ideal for desert climates. It also provides your landscaping with added security. These plants grow one foot to seven feet tall, and may be planted around entrances to limit burglar hiding places and deter access. The prickly pear also looks pretty—with vibrant flowers in summer—and produces fruit for your family. No one other plant on this list has all these benefits.
MIDWEST 7. Daylily
If you don't have a green thumb, you'll love the daylily. It grows perfectly well in most hardiness zones and doesn't have a soil preference. Add on the fact that daylilies don't have diseases or chronic pests, and it'll be one of your favorite plants on your property. Once planted, enjoy brightly colored blooms without worry.
8. Lilac
The lilac is a low-water tree that never grows more than 15 feet tall, making it perfect to add depth and dimension to your garden. Lilacs rely on the hard frost of the Midwest and Northeast to set its buds and return with velvety soft purple and pink flowers each spring. After the root system develops, you won't need to do much more than pruning and fertilizing once per year.
WEST 9. Sage
Sage is a perennial drought-tolerant herb. Though sage dies off in the winter, you can cut it back at the end of the summer, dry the leaves for cooking, and watch fresh new shoots emerge in early spring. The honeybees go crazy over the bright purple flowers that bloom in late spring, helping the plant double and triple in size in just a few growing seasons.
10. Yarrow Yarrow is a lovely, bushy perennial that shows off yellow, red, orange, white, and pink flowers each year. It's perfect for southern areas because it can stand the heat and some cooler temperatures. Yarrow loves full sun and welldrained soil. If given ideal growing conditions, you won't have to water it at all and it'll still grow to about four feet tall. Plus, local deer and rabbits don't generally find yarrow appealing, so it's less likely to get munched on. Planting with purpose saves you money, time, and precious water. Plus, in some cases, the plants you choose can enhance your yard's security or offer medicinal and nutritional value. Get to planting so this season and seasons to come will be more water-conscious and beautiful.

ccording to a new National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Remodelers survey, high-performing, Low-emissive (Low-E) windows are the most common green building products used by residential remodelers. Seventy percent of remodelers say they used programmable thermostats, a big increase from 42 percent back in 2011. Sixty-two percent of remodelers used ceiling fans in their remodels, compared to 37 percent back in 2011. Over the next five years, the percentage of remodelers who expect to be doing more than 60 percent of their projects green will double, according to the McGraw Hill Construction green building study in conjunction with NAHB. “The lower operating and maintenance costs of energy-efficient homes are a compelling reason for more home owners to incorporate green features in their remodeling designs,” says Sullivan. “A professional remodeler can help maximize the benefits of including these features in a remodel.
