GREEN UP YOUR PATIO WITH PLANTS The easiest and most versatile way to add plants to a patio is by using containers. Evergreen shrubs in containers can define areas of a patio, provide privacy and shade or serve as a windbreak. Smaller pots of perennials, annuals or bulbs can introduce seasonal color to a patio. One advantage to using containers is that they are portable, which means you can move the plants around to suit your mood and their needs. Just be sure that the containers match the style of the patio. Another alternative is to have built-in planting areas on the patio. This is best done when you design and build the patio: leave open spaces to act as in-ground containers that you can plant directly into. This method creates more protection from freezing temperatures, and plants need less irrigation than if they are grown in containers. It also allows you to grow low ground covers that help soften large expanses of paving. If you include a built-in in-ground planter, it is vital that the planting hole drain adequately and the soil does not become too alkaline as a result of adjoining mortar. Here’s how to get the best results: Once the patio is built, including the planting holes, excavate a hole at least 3 feet deep and fill the hole with water at least 12 inches deep. If the water does not drain within four hours, you’ll need to improve drainage or use containers or raised beds. If the hole passes the drainage test, line it with heavy plastic, make several large slits in the bottom of the plastic so water can drain, then fill the hole with good soil.

In the same way you would decorate a room inside the house, use yard art to accent and otherwise decorate your patio. Whether elaborate and built-in or simple and freestanding, water features are desirable amenities for a patio. Even a small pond can host a number of plants and/or fish. Or install a fountain to provide a bubbling soundtrack to your outdoor experiences and minimize sounds from neighbors or traffic.

FIND FURNITURE YOU LOVE The most common and useful amenity for a patio is furniture. It provides a place to sit, dine or otherwise enjoy the space. When choosing patio furniture, consider the style and how it matches the surroundings, as well as how comfortable and durable it is. Outdoor furniture that has to be protected or that stains easily when exposed to the elements will probably prove to be more trouble than it is worth.

Beat the Heat I N M O R E WAY S T H A N O N E

There are times during the summer when you have got to have some relief from the heat. And whether fans are sitting on the floor, nestled in the window or hanging from the ceiling, not all fans are created equal. Some are noisy, some don’t really move the air well, and some are simply aggravating. Here’s how you can get some cool relief with the help of some devices that get the job done.

A QUIET COOL There are few things that make a hot situation worse than a noisy fan. That goes away with the Dyson Air Multiplier Table Fan. This is perfect when you need a little air movement or to give your air conditioner a boost. Because there are no blades, there’s no worry about little fingers being hurt. It also has a high-tech style that just looks cool. For sleeping, a vertical stand fan is a good option. One of the quietest on the market is the Dyson stand fan, but at almost $400, you may want it to do more than blow air. Another option is the Lasko 42-inch Wind Curve. At around $50, you get a tall, space- and money-saving fan that can help you get your cool on.

WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY A window air fan might be a better answer, but you want one that looks better than a standard box fan propped in the window. For that, the Bionaire Twin Reversible Airflow Window Fan, available at Amazon. com, can move hot air out of the house or cool air in and fits neatly in a window.

THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX The Vornado Whole Room Air Circulator will help you feel cooler and give your air conditioner a break by being able to raise the thermostat so that it doesn’t work quite as hard. If you’re just overheating in bed, there’s a fan for that too. The BedJet (www.bedjet.com) has a small fan that goes under the bed, and an attached blower blows air under the sheets. If you’ve had problems with night sweats or hot flashes or just can’t cool down at night, this could be what you’ve been looking for; it can also blow warm air during the winter, making it perfect for cold toes.

COOL PORTABILITY You can also try a portable air conditioner. These portable units can be moved wherever you need some extra cooling, such as in the living room during the day and the bedroom at night. The Koldfront Portable Air Conditioner, available at Amazon.com, will cool up to 500 feet of living space and vents out any external window. Cool and efficient and at about $400, you get cool dehumidified air that will help you feel more comfortable. Another option is the Frigidaire Portable Air Conditioner, which brings the temps down and has a cool look that’s not the same, old white box.

6 AREAS TO TACKLE DURING

Summer Cleaning Not everything can be cleaned at all times of the year, making the summer a good time to take care of some of those household cleaning tasks while the weather is warm.

Wash your vacuum filters. Our vacuums do a lot of the dirty work around the house; and if you have pets, the dust and dander can really accumulate in the vacuum’s air filters. If they’re not cleaned regularly, you can end up sending out a cloud of that dust when you vacuum. Wash, rinse, and air-dry vacuums outdoors.

Clean that grimy grill. Clean your dryer hose and vent. Check your dryer hose and your home’s exterior vent to look for build-up. Pull the dryer away from the wall and inspect the hose at the dryer by removing it to make sure lint hasn’t backed up into your appliance.

The summer is the best time to use the grill, and that means they can accumulate a lot of grease and cooking build-up. Give your grill a good scrubbing so that it’s clean for the remainder of the summer and not so built up with grime when you pull it out again next spring.

Inspect the fireplace and chimney. When the weather turns cold, everyone will be calling to have their fireplace and chimney inspected or cleaned. Do it before the first cold snap when your local chimney sweep will be anxious for the work and may even charge less for it. The more you maintain during the summer months, the less tedious the next seasonal deep clean will be.

Inspect and clean the basement.

Wash your stove’s exhaust filter. Hoods and over the range filters can become greasy and messy. This is a good time to take them out, wash them in hot sudsy ammonia and let air dry.

Now is the time to inspect for leaks, mold, and insects. Give your basement a good cleaning and thorough going-over before the cold and damp sets in and your basement will be in good shape when winter arrives.
