MAIN HOUSE

The main house is one of the example of vernacular architecture. The fusion of western and eastern architectural elements into the design creates a unique and interesting appearance.

The Picture shows the facade of the main house before Tze Chi Association repainted it.

HISTORICAL CHANGES Most parts of the building were conserved and restored after the new owner of the house moved in. However, the colour scheme of the building has changed over the decades to suit Tze Chi’s logo

BRICKS

Bricks creates rusty effect to the stairs located at the main entrance

ARC WINDOW The semi-circular clerestory provides better ventilation and additional lighting to the interior space of the house.

AIR HOLES Ventilation grilles and joint on the wall provide efficient ventilation, which allows good ventilation to the interior and cools down the house effectively

STILTS Stilts, also known as footings help to raise the building above ground level, which catches the wind of higher velocity.

ANJUNG

An ‘Anjung’, is an additional structure protruding from the ‘Serambi’ (main house), which forms another hipped roof, built at the same elevation as the main house.

EMBELLISHMENT Embellishments create a visual interest as well as providing good ventilation and reduces glare.

INTERIOR MAIN HOUSE The main hall, also known as the common room of the main house was once a living room area but is now a gathering space for social and charity events, as well as religious activities.

Perspective view of the main hall. The high ceiling allows more light to penetrate through the openings and windows. Thus, providing efficient lighting in the interior space.

ENTRANCE

The grand entrance of the main building is beautiful in its simplicity. From afar, one can even sense an inviting feeling from the front facade of the building.

STEEL STAIRCASE

The steel staircase, as a connection between the main building and extended storage space at the back house. This space exudes a rustic feel to it.

STORAGE SPACE The storage room connected to the main building. The room is semi lit and musty due to the compiling of dust.

Perspective view of the space under the building, which is raised by footings.

GROUND LEVEL The space under the house is used as a storage area today, but was used as a working area or for rearing animals in the past.

The house view from afar. Influenced by the Malay Kampong House, the Gopeng Road old House blends well into the natural environment.

The House exudes a sense of serenity and calmness with it’s cool hue color and simple architectural form.

EXTENDED HOUSE

The House was extended in the 50’s . Both external and internal walls were rendered with lime plaster prior to lime-wash painting of pale yellow color.

DESIGN

A glimpse of the exterior secondary building. Design in a way that reflects Ipoh’s Chinese cultural heritage.

INTERIOR EXTENDED HOUSE

The Chinese Influenced air holes allowing faint light and shadow to be cast into the room. A light breeze sipping through leaving one feeling calm and cool.

White-washed surrounding gives a clean and light feeling.

DOOR Old door knob, as part of the vintage feel in the House.

WINDOW

Jalousie window was one of the most popular designed glass windows used for homes in that era.

TIME

A reflection of the past and heritage, the geometry grilles are seen attached on all the windows..

HALL

The main hall became the hearth of the home.

MASTER BEDROOM

Behind closed doors, old Furniture still remain after decades. The smell and memories also lingers.

GUEST ROOM

An unoccupied space leaving an empty and sentimental feeling behind.

FURNITURES Attach cupboards and cabinets left abandoned to dust in the old building.

SINK

Uniquely arranged light blue ceramic tiles tabletop to brighten up the kitchen area.

KITCHEN

Kitchen area in the secondary building. Red tone floor tiles to warm up the brightly lit kitchen.

CORRIDOR

Semi lit corridor leading to the toilets and bedroom. Consist of natural ventilation and light.

RECYCLE CENTRE Recycling as part of the activities in Tze Chi Society. Old folks work as volunteers to segregate the recyclable items. .

OPEN SPACED KITCHEN The open spaced kitchen area is placed near to the courtyard. Charity events are often held. Hence, the open spaced kitchen is perfect for heavy preparation of food. It has ample supply of natural light and fresh air. .
