IIn a landmark moment for the Stark County community, Hope Homes Foundation Incorporated, a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization, has unveiled the region’s first-ever Smart Home designed to support individuals with developmental disabilities and special needs. The project is a result of the organization’s unwavering commitment to affordable housing and support services for those in need, with an impressive six-decade legacy in the field. This project was made possible through collaborations with Charis Homes, the Stark County Board of Developmental Disabilities, and Midwest Health Services.
Paul Herrera, Hope Homes Executive Director explains that the organization has been a beacon of hope for individuals with developmental disabilities and special needs in Stark, Summit, and Wayne counties for over 60 years. Hope Homes has 22 rental properties serving over 101 individuals. Herrera collaborates with the local County Boards of DD and the State of Ohio to purchase and construct new homes. Just until 6 years ago they were also a service provider. Now Hope Homes is a solo housing and property management corporation that offers their homes to individuals and direct care service providers such as the Midwest Health Services for lease.
Midwest currently offers residential support through 32 sites across Stark County, serving a diverse group of individuals ranging in age from 18 to 90+ years. The residents receive round-the-clock care, with staff members supporting their unique needs, ensuring their well-being
Hope Homes’ latest venture, the Smart Home initiative, introduces an innovative approach to support services, prioritizing independence and technological integration. The pilot home, built by Charis Homes, has already welcomed its first residents in early July. This trailblazing project serves as a model for the county, demonstrating how state-of-the-art technology can enhance the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities.
The Smart Home boasts a myriad of technological advancements to cater to the specific needs of its residents. Some of the key features include:
• Remote Support Systems: The Smart Home integrates Angel-sense watches, a personal remote support system, allowing caregivers to stay connected with residents and respond promptly to their needs
• Smart Kitchen: The induction stovetop with no-burn pots and pans enhances safety, while the refrigerator aids individuals in following recipes step-by-step and even adding groceries to their Instacart shopping list.
• Assisted Laundry: The washer and dryer have sensors that detect the amount of clothing inside and assist individuals through the laundry process, simplifying a once-challenging task.
• Enhanced Security: The Smart Home is equipped with a smart lock on the front door, Ring doorbells, and fall detection sensors to ensure the safety of its residents.
One of the key beneficiaries of the Smart Home concept is Jason, one of the new residents who responds and benefits strongly from this technology. When Jason returns home from his daily activities, the Two-Way Remote Support system (THS) checks in with him through video chat, providing companionship and support. Jason is also equipped with a Med-minder, which helps him manage his medications with ease.
The Smart Home allows Jason to spend time alone, confident that the system is monitoring his well-being and ready to assist if necessary.
Hope Homes has meticulously designed the Smart Home to be accessible to all individuals, irrespective of their physical abilities. With zero-entry doorways and showers, wheelchair users can navigate the space without the need for ramps or steps. The home also boasts a sprinkled, monitored fire alarm system, ensuring the safety of all residents.
The realization of the Smart Home dream was made possible through a collaborative effort between Hope Homes, Charis Homes, Midwest Health Services and Stark DD. Charis Homes has always felt compassionate about this mission, and built this high-efficiency home at a more than fair price. Midwest’s staff provides services to the residents and manages the home. The partnership with Stark DD secured funding for the Smart Appliances and Devices. Moving forward, individuals in Stark county can reach out to their SSA (Service & Support Administration) at Stark DD, schedule a tour of the Smart Home, explore the technology, and work with SSA to find personalized solutions for their own needs.
Hope Homes Foundation Incorporated’s Smart Home initiative marks a milestone in the journey towards inclusive living for individuals with developmental disabilities in Stark County. By harnessing the power of smart technology, the organization has created an environment that promotes independence, empowerment, and social inclusion. The residents’ experiences
in this trailblazing model home are sure to inspire future projects, propelling the community further towards a more inclusive and compassionate society. As the vision of Hope Homes continues to evolve, Stark County takes a significant step towards a brighter, more inclusive future for all its citizens.
