HEADOFSCHOOLTHOMASMAIN
Welcome to Ridgefield Academy. Our school is deliberately designed to educate children in the critical early years when they are building a strong foundation of academic skills, self-confidence, character, and a love of learning.
Our program supports all aspects of the development of young children in an environment that celebrates the joy of childhood and delivers an integrated and comprehensive curriculum to prepare children of this age range for future success.
First and foremost, we are a school of true academic excellence. We are deeply committed to Head of School Thomas Main
the comprehensive education and nurture of each child in our care, each and every day. The academic program is appropriately challenging, engaging, rooted in the traditional disciplines, and committed to the very best practices for teaching and learning. Classes are small, intentionally so, and our teachers get to know their students as people and learners in order to provide each of them with an educational experience rich in opportunity. At RA, we value meaningful and accomplished learning, which results in thorough preparation for the next level of their education. RA graduates head off to the finest high schools prepared to succeed—and they do!
I encourage you to visit our school, see our programs in action, feel the warmth and strength of our community, and meet our outstanding teachers. I am sure you will feel the depth and value of a Ridgefield Academy education.

ATEGIC INITIATIVES
An on compels us to pursue excellence and opportunities and research-based approaches to teaching and learning arise. For 50 years, this ambition has yielded inspiring programs that empower students to confidently embrace their authentic selves and shape their futures with ingenuity and integrity. From this perspective, we have adopted the following strategic initiatives to further advance our institution of excellence. Most importantly, we remain focused on our students, who will benefit from innovative ideas, new learning spaces, and expanded opportunities.
Interweaving meaningful literature with verbal and artistic expression; expanding a history unit to include culture, art, and science, along with the core topic; relating Latin roots to English and foreign language vocabulary are all examples of how RA educates rather than teaches. From the first moment you meet the teaching staff you realize they are there because they love to educate students.

EXPANDINGMARKETS
We know our strengths as a school and aim to build on that success by reaching into new markets. Recently, the school has expanded its portfolio of auxiliary programs, including robust summer programs, facility rentals, and after-school enrichment clubs. Moving forward, we will continue to identify innovative educational initiatives that extend our reach to new families and enhance our brand. Deepening connections with the greater community allows us to develop local partnerships and increase revenue, strengthening our core educational program.
SCHOOLOFTHEFUTURE
As we prepare to support the future of K-Grade 8 education and our evolving educational program, we will identify cutting-edge facilities adaptations that ensure we remain innovative and responsive to our students' needs over the next 5, 10, and 15 years. We will continue to engage our educational leaders in a collaborative process to shape the design and development of spaces that align with our forward-thinking educational philosophy. This project will proactively integrate new knowledge, technology, and teaching methodologies to create a dynamic academic environment that enhances learning opportunities, both now and in the future, reinforcing our commitment to the significance of Middle School education.

COMMUNICATIONANDLANGUAGEARTS
Ridgefield Academy emphasizes the importance of strong verbal and written communication skills. Students engage in a robust curriculum designed to enhance their ability to read, comprehend, write, and effectively share information. They also develop essential interpersonal skills.
PUBLICSPEAKING
Mastering the tools to effectively communicate ideas with others is a critical part of becoming a confident learner. Children who are taught communication strategies from an early age become more adept at both informal and formal public speaking.
RA's curriculum offers early and genuine opportunities for every student to engage in public speaking, including delivering presentations, leading assemblies, and performing on stage. Every graduate concludes their educational journey at RA with a personal graduation speech, reflecting on their experiences.
RA does a tremendous job of instilling a sense of confidence in the children through frequent public speaking opportunities. And importantly, it also fosters a strong sense of character that creates a wonderful school community for the kids to safely learn, grow, and have fun!

VISUALANDPERFORMINGARTS
At Ridgefield Academy, the arts are an integral part of the learning process. Our visual and performing arts curriculum encourages students to express their creativity and stretch their imaginations through activities designed to build confidence and promote personal growth.
Early exposure to drama, music, and visual arts broadens our students' aesthetic sense. All K-8 students participate in programs dedicated to creative expression and discovery. Whether engaging in band or choral instruction, students perform in concerts at least once per year. In addition, grade-appropriate productions—often complementing the academic curriculum—offer students of all ages a chance to perform on stage.
TECHNOLOGYPROGRAM
Ridgefield Academy’s technology curriculum begins in Lower School and progresses systematically through Grade 8. Technology is integrated into the academic program from the start, ensuring that all children can engage in dynamic projects that connect with other parts of the RA curriculum and acquire the skills and knowledge they will need for success in high school and beyond.
Beginning in Kindergarten, students are introduced to drag-and-drop coding environments and Photoshop. By the end of Grade 8, students have gained experience in programming applications, coding websites, filmmaking and editing, 3D fabrication, and graphic design. This program is supported by robust facilities that foster modern creative expression, including laptops, iPads, 3D printers, a laser cutter, programmable robots, a green-screen room, and an isolated sound booth.
CHARACTERDEVELOPMENT&SERVICELEARNING
At Ridgefield Academy, we believe in nurturing responsible citizenship, fostering connections through helping others, and creating real-world experiences that matter. Our Service Learning Program embodies these principles, offering a transformative journey for students.
ENCOURAGINGRESPONSIBLECITIZENSHIP
Through service projects, we instill the essence of responsible citizenship in our students. They learn not only to be active members of their communities but also to recognize their roles in shaping a better world.
FOSTERINGCONNECTIONSTHROUGHHELPINGOTHERS
Our program emphasizes the profound connection that comes from lending a helping hand. Students engage in projects that uplift others, fostering empathy and understanding while building strong bonds within our community.
PROVIDINGMEANINGFULEXPERIENCES
Service learning at Ridgefield Academy isn't just about ticking boxes—it's about immersive, meaningful experiences. From local initiatives to global efforts, students dive into projects that leave a lasting impact and cultivate a sense of purpose.
PROMOTINGENVIRONMENTALSUSTAINABILITY
We're committed to green initiatives that promote a healthier planet. Through our program, students actively participate in projects aimed at sustaining the environment, fostering a culture of eco-consciousness and responsibility.
EMPOWERINGLEADERSHIPROLES
Leaders aren't born; they're made. Our program cultivates leadership skills by providing opportunities for students to take charge and make a difference. From organizing projects to leading teams, students learn to inspire and enact positive change.
At Ridgefield Academy, community service isn't merely a checkbox, it's woven into the fabric of our identity. From the classroom to the global stage, our commitment to service shines through, embodying our values of respect, responsibility, fairness, and above all, service to others.
PHYSICALEDUCATION&ATHLETICS
Our Physical Education and competitive athletics programs promote fitness, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Teachers and coaches help students understand the importance of physical activity and lay the foundation for the lifelong enjoyment of and participation in physical activities and competitive sports.
EXPLORINGMOVEMENT
A strong Physical Education program allows young children the opportunity to learn a variety of movements and skills. In Lower School, children learn methods of movement and explore their physical strengths and abilities through a skill-based program.
BUILDINGSKILLS
In addition to fitness-based activities, Middle School students are introduced to the skill sets, strategies, and rules of competitive sports. Our friendly Blue | White intramural program gives our students exposure to competition while reinforcing the ideals of teamwork and sportsmanship.
COMPETITIVEATHLETICS
Upper School athletics are an important part of a Ridgefield Academy education. Students are required to participate in one of many sports offerings each of the three seasons in lieu of a traditional Physical Education program. Coaches encourage development of skills and strategies, confidence, self-discipline, teamwork, and leadership. Grades 6 through 8 students participate in practices and games, and compete against other independent school teams as part of the Fairchester Athletic Association.
not just a school, a community of learners
LOWERSCHOOL(K-Grade3)
The Kindergarten through Grade 3 years at Ridgefield Academy are when children begin to embrace the joy of lifelong learning. When a student rings the Patriot Bell on their first day of school, they start a boundless academic journey from uncertainty to confidence and from dependence to self-reliance. Students are welcomed into a warm, caring school community where they will thrive.
JOYFULLEARNING
Especially in the Lower School years, childhood is valued and celebrated at RA. Students are encouraged to embrace learning with the joy of childhood, rather than suppress it. Upon arriving at the Summit Building each morning, students are greeted by our vast 42acre campus, intentionally designed for children—a space where they can play, take risks, be challenged, grow, and feel a sense of belonging. The foundation built in the Lower School at Ridgefield Academy cultivates a lifelong love of learning.
MIDDLESCHOOL(GRADES4&5)
RA’s Middle School, comprising Grades 4 and 5, serves as an intermediate division based on our belief in the need for a developmental transition between the Lower School’s elementary-style classrooms and the more advanced, subject-specific schedule of our Upper School. This two-year home we call Middle School allows our students to obtain the necessary skills and confidence needed to comfortably transition into Grade 6.
BUILDINGINDEPENDENCE
Individualized teaching and a challenging, supportive environment allow our students to take risks, question the world around them, and become strong, independent thinkers. Kindness, respect, and fairness are taught, modeled, reinforced, and expected in all areas of Middle School life.
UPPERSCHOOL(GRADES6-8)
At Ridgefield Academy, Upper School students enjoy being young adolescents without the presence and pressures of a high school. As the oldest students in our community, those in Grades 6-8 embrace early and genuine leadership opportunities serving as role models for younger students, leading school assemblies, engaging in service learning, and representing the student body on the Student Council.
PREPARINGFORLIVESFILLEDWITHPROMISE
The Upper School years are formative in the development of students’ academic learning styles, strengths, and identities. At RA, a key component of our mission is to prepare graduates who are self-assured, which is cultivated during their later years. Each student is recognized as an individual and encouraged to find and use their own voice. By the time students reach Grades 7 and 8, they are eager to speak their minds, express their opinions, and actively participate in the process of choosing a high school. Graduates of RA leave our community well-prepared for the academic road ahead. With a solid academic foundation, a strong moral compass, and the confidence to meet future challenges, our graduates matriculate to some of the finest boarding, day, and public high schools.
We are so thankful for the dedicated teachers, enriching programs, and supportive environment that provide our daughter with the opportunity to learn and grow each day.

HIGHSCHOOLPLACEMENT
The high school selection process at Ridgefield Academy is a real-life exercise in applying the confidence and skills students acquire during their early school years. Researching, interviewing, and making decisions with the support of their school and families empower students, fostering growth and independence. Graduates of RA eagerly anticipate the exciting high school journey ahead, filled with new opportunities, challenges, and friendships.
Ridgefield Academy is dedicated to helping each student find the right school for the next step in their educational journey. RA sponsors one of the largest and most comprehensive High School Placement Fairs in Fairfield County. Starting in Grade 7, the Head of School and Head of Upper School provide informal guidance and support to each student and family as they begin their high school search. This crucial process of preparing, planning, investigating, and considering a wide range of secondary school options continues in earnest in Grade 8.
Given its proximity to many independent day schools, its short driving distance to some of America’s leading boarding schools, and its location near several highly rated public high schools, RA students are presented with numerous compelling choices.
To aid in this process, RA offers trips to day and boarding schools for interested Grade 7 students. Additionally, all Grade 8 students meet weekly with the Head of Upper School to determine the best next step for their success. Throughout every stage of the process, students and families receive comprehensive guidance and support.
At Ridgefield Academy, we believe that finding the right high school is not just about the next step in education but about embracing a future filled with promise. Our commitment to each student ensures they are well-prepared to thrive in the exciting journey ahead.
With the help of RA, I [evolved] from a quiet little girl who was nervous to talk to anybody to someone who is not only a hard worker but also has something to say. [In] high school, I am excited to continue to develop my new-found voice and to grow as a student.
