J. Edward Kidd
Dear Members of the Ridley Community, We are pleased to present the 2015–2016 Ridley College Annual Report. I am personally grateful for the story this report tells—it is the story of a passionate community of alumni, parents, faculty, staff, Governors and friends who wholeheartedly believe in our mission of preparing meaningful and flourishing lives by teaching the habits of mind, body and spirit, and the values needed to lead in a global society.
We hope you’ll enjoy reading the success stories throughout this report. Ridley is a tradition and a community with which you can be proud to claim an affiliation. This exceptional educational experience is made possible by a community enthusiastically willing to invest in Ridley with time, talent, and treasure, and we count our blessings for this unwavering support. With the support and loyalty of the expansive Ridley family, I am confident that we will be successful in achieving our vision of “inspiring flourishing lives to transform our globe.” To the entire community, please accept my heartfelt gratitude for everything you do to help Ridley thrive as a truly special place of learning, service and discovery. With best wishes, J. Edward Kidd, Headmaster INSPIRING

HEADMASTER'S ADDRESS
Rest assured, this story is compelling and describes a College filled with students from across Canada and around the world. We opened this school year with the largest student body in our history, a record number of applications and with the distinction of being an IB continuum school—the only Canadian boarding school with this designation. As we are fond of stating, “Ridley is a Canadian school of the world, preparing students for the world.” For 127 years, that preparation has included rigorous academics, robust athletic and arts programmes and a nourishing boarding experience. These facets continue to be at the heart of all we do; however, new traditions and new cultures continue to emerge. Seniors are matriculating to an ever widening array of top universities around the globe, our new approach to positive education is teaching students how to lead flourishing lives, and a school-wide commitment to service learning sparks experiential, authentic learning in Canada as well as global destinations like El Salvador, Guatemala and Malawi.

Ridley continues to flourish. The school is full, students are engaged in all that Ridley has to offer, faculty and staff are energized, and our very special Ridley community is alive and well around the world. One of the privileges I have as Chair of the Board of Governors is meeting with Ridleians from across the decades to hear the amazing things they’ve achieved. At the recent UK Branch dinner—so fabulously hosted by Rob Black ’99—50 Ridleians (representing the Class of 1946 through to the Class of 2017) gathered to share such tales and memories from their time on campus. The camaraderie, laughter, and story-telling across the generations were heartwarming and full of Ridley spirit.
The Board of Governors met six times in 2016 and focused most of its time on priorities within the Strategic Plan, Master Campus Plan, feasibility study for a potential capital campaign, and strengthening the financial position of the school. We recognized the contributions made by the following Governors who retired this year: Dr. Jack Lightstone (past President, Brock University) and Joe Robertson (past parent). We are fortunate to welcome the following Governors to the Board in 2016: Dr. Dragan Matovic (current parent) and Don McMurtry ’82. Ridley is always looking for volunteers to participate as members of the Board as well as on various committees. If you are interested in putting your name forward as a volunteer, kindly contact linda_chang@ridleycollege.com. As a current parent and Chair of the Board of Governors, I have the opportunity to see, close up, the strength of Ridley’s full programme to shape the lives of Ridlieans. As our Headmaster reminds us, “To be a Ridleian carries deep meaning for our students, graduates and their families. Ridleians belong to a legacy of intellectual rigor and quality of character. They share a commitment to service and the camaraderie of traditions.” I encourage you to look for ways to connect with our great school and community— all enduring legacies require time, talent and treasure! There are some great school-hosted events planned across Canada and the globe in 2017, and I look forward to seeing many of you at the annual RCA Golf Tournament and Association Weekend (HomeComing for classes ending in 2 and 7 this September). The school seems to get more beautiful each year—I encourage you to return “home” and visit. Georgina H. Black ’85 Chair of the Board of Governors

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
Speaking of spirit, on behalf of the Board of Governors, I’d like to acknowledge the terrific work of our faculty and staff. They bring passion and excellence to their professions, which allows our students and school programmes to excel. Our Headmaster, Ed Kidd, and his wife Hanna continue to bring incredible energy, warmth and leadership to the school. I believe Kenyon Lett House hosted over 60 events last year alone! I am pleased to share with the Ridley community that the Board of Governors renewed the Headmaster’s contract for ten years.

With the Loran Scholarship and with Ridley, I’ve had so many opportunities to be educated at the highest prestige and it’s just such an amazing privilege and it is something I will never take for granted.

In February 2016, Grace Lowes ’16 joined a very select and prestigious group. Having been awarded a Loran Scholarship for 2016, Grace became one of 569 recipients of the coveted scholarship since its inception in 1988, and the first Ridleian to achieve this feat. Going beyond grades, the Loran Scholarship awards its prizes based on a mix of academic achievement, extracurricular activity, leadership potential and commitment to public service. In essence, the scholarship is the embodiment of what it means to be a Ridleian. A graduate in May 2016, Grace was an active member of the Ridley community during her time. She cofounded the Model U.N. group, formed a “Days for Girls” charitable activity on campus, joined clubs such as the Syrian Refugee Club and Positive Spaces Group, and helped lead the school as a Prefect in her final year. Through it all, Grace remains humble and thankful. “ With the Loran Scholarship and with Ridley, I’ve had so many opportunities to be educated at the highest prestige and it’s just such an amazing privilege and it’s something I will never take for granted,” Grace said. Each year, the Loran Scholarship Foundation receives over 4,000 applications, with 30 scholarships awarded. Each recipient receives a renewable undergraduate scholarship, valued at up to $100,000, for the duration of his or her four years of post secondary education. In addition to this, these scholars receive the opportunity to intern abroad for three summers, receive residency support and are connected to a mentor for the duration of their education. Another part of the scholarship is the opportunity to partake in a Loran Scholars Foundation retreat. This provided her an opportunity to strengthen her leadership and team building skills before she started university. The retreat began with a canoe excursion through Algonquin Park. “ It was extremely outside of my comfort zone, but was an amazing opportunity to meet some of the students that had also been awarded the scholarship,” Grace said of the canoe trip. The second part of the retreat took place in Guelph and provided the opportunity to meet with Loran Scholars who were in different stages of their four-year scholarships. The retreat reminded Grace of the importance of gratitude.

“ Everyone advised me that during the school year things will be hard; they will be overwhelming and that I will likely feel stressed, but to remember what a privilege it is to be educated and even more so what a privilege it is to be educated without fear of financial hurdles. Being thankful and appreciative all the time is so important,” Grace said. Grace began studying politics and philosophy at McGill University in Montreal in September 2016.
PREFECT
“
She spent the summer reflecting on the past, present and future opportunities her Ridley education and the Loran Scholarship have provided her. “ Being educated at Ridley is a luxury. Don’t forget that. Soak in everything you learn and take advantage of every opportunity you are given and be grateful for all of those things. Always say 'thank you', not just with your words, but also with your actions,” Grace advises students who are just beginning their Ridley journeys. During her time at Ridley, Grace became a leader, an activist, a humanitarian and a proud member of our community. There is no doubt that she will continue to lead and inspire change through the course of her post secondary education and beyond.

IN THEIR
words…
I’m at Ridley because of the endless opportunities to do what I love. Through the many wonderful facilities, the amazing teachers, and the rigorous academic programmes, you can really stretch yourself and relate your experience to real-world situations in addition to finding your passion. Whether it is rowing, debate, or chemistry, Ridley truly provides you with amazing opportunities. — Shaun Donnelly ’17
Ridley is special to me because of the constant care given to every single student attending this school and the endless amount of opportunities it provides. Whether teacher, student, or advisor, help is always provided no matter what the issue may be. This makes Ridley feel like a home. I already know that the friendships that I have made here will last a lifetime and it is all due to Ridley being one big family. —Vincent Kenn de Balinthazy ’19
The decision to come to Ridley involved my entire family. This school aligned with many of our family values and we were impressed by what a tight community the school was. One of my favourite parts of my Ridley experience is my time in our theatre programme. I have gained so much confidence and so many friendships. My family and I have never regretted for a second our decision to join the community. — Cassandra Mitchell ’17
18 | 2015–2016 ANNUAL REPORT
My father attended Ridley College in its early years. His positive experience and the experience of my many relatives who had attended the school before me led my parents to make some significant sacrifices to enable me to attend. HOWEVER, THOSE SACRIFICES WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ENOUGH WITHOUT THE SCHOOL’S GENEROUS FINANCIAL SUPPORT. My time at Ridley was truly transformative. During my Ridley years I developed numerous skills and attitudes that were important at the time, as well as later in life. Consequently, I believe I have an obligation to “pay forward” the benefit I enjoyed. I donate to Ridley to enable deserving students to enjoy the wonderful educational benefits my family and I have enjoyed, the opportunity to develop attributes that will lead to successful productive lives, and build life-long friendships. — TERENCE P. ALUMNI EVENTS
summary
From HomeComing to celebrating 50 years of rowing at Ridley to smaller receptions around the world, we were excited to spend time with alumni, current and past parents, current and past staff and faculty, and friends of the Ridley community. Among the many places we visited since this time last year were Toronto, the Bahamas, Hong Kong, Nigeria, London England, Barbados, Hamilton, Boston, and Beijing. Thank you for attending these receptions and allowing us to inform you of recent accomplishments and happenings on campus, as well as what we have in store for the future. As always, we value your input and feedback in these matters. Among our major events were two golf tournaments, Winter HomeComing, a celebratory 50 Years of Ridley Rowing reception, and Fall HomeComing, which included the Governors’ Dinner, campus tours, alumni rowing, and much more. Welcoming back Old Ridleians to campus is always a highlight for us. We are looking forward to another year of events to engage with the entire Ridley family.

CHRISTMAS MARKET
INTERGUILD AGM
Guild volunteers were busy preparing for the holiday season. Christmas Market was held on December 2nd and once again was a huge success. A wonderful school event brought together Lower School and Upper School students and our Ridley families, and filled the Fieldhouse with past and current parents, alumni, faculty, staff and the local community. Thank you to our co-chairs Heather Charlton and Elaine Jenkins for a fabulous event.
A special day in our Family Guild calendar was Wednesday, May 25th when Ridley hosted the Interguild AGM. We had 40 people attend the event from 12 different independent schools across Ontario. Everyone enjoyed the event and we received rave reviews: from the beauty of our campus, to student-led tours, an engaging presentation from our guest speaker OR’ Leslie Strong ’85, to the lunch prepared by Chartwells.
RCFG COOKBOOK
TRIVIA NIGHT
The RCFG Cookbook is a great “friend-raiser” for the Family Guild. Thank you to alumni, past and current parents, faculty, staff and students who submitted recipes, purchased a cookbook or bought a business card ad. We were delighted that all 200 copies were sold! Three cheers to the Family Guild editing team as well.
February saw a new event for the Family Guild. Trivia Night took place on February 20, 2016 in Williams Hall. Parents, alumni, faculty and staff participated in a funfilled night with more than 80 people in attendance. In its first year, Trivia Night raised over $3,200 to help children from the Niagara community attend one of our summer camps. Thank you to Julia Bertollo who helped with this initiative.
ARCHIVES COMMITTEE The Family Guild also worked with Wendy Darby in starting the Archives Committee. Energetic volunteers helped with organizing and sorting items in the Archives. Fun was had by all.

Greg Stremlaw ’90 has always had a passion for sports. During his Ridley career, which began in 1987, Greg was heavily involved in Athletics. For all three years he spent on the Ridley campus, he was a member of the First Boys soccer and hockey teams. Greg also competed on the track and field team and the golf team. Although Athletics was a large part of his Ridley journey, that wasn’t the only aspect of Ridley life that impacted Greg. He graduated in 1990 as an Ontario Scholar, with a wellrounded skill set that truly benefitted him in his post-secondary career and beyond. “Ridley placed a heavy emphasis and mandate on being well-rounded. Prioritization was critically important for success at Ridley and that skill set has come to serve me very well as an executive in my career,” Greg said. Upon graduation, Greg went to the University of Western Ontario, where he completed an undergraduate degree in Business. Continuing his education, he obtained his Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Maine. Many opportunities arose for Greg after completing his MBA, but his thirst for knowledge was insatiable; he took a position at the Orange Bowl and enrolled at the University of Miami, where he obtained a Masters degree in Sports Management. Returning to Canada, Greg parlayed his education, skill set and passion for sports into a record-setting career in public and private sport. Greg began his career in Canada as the Director of Bobsleigh and Luge, and the Vice President of Sports Services for the Calgary Olympic Development Association, now known as WinSport Canada. After six years, he moved back to Ontario to become the Chief Executive Officer of the Chicopee Ski & Summer Resort. In 2007, Greg was named Chief Executive Officer of Curling Canada, where he encouraged innovation that led to the organization’s massive financial turnaround. His work with Curling Canada also helped the country become the number one nation in the global rankings for Women’s, Men’s and Wheelchair curling.

profile
Most recently, Greg was named the head of CBC Sports in 2015, and his tenure there has been nothing short of remarkable. In the past year, he was named the General Manager and Chef de Mission for CBC/ Radio-Canada’s coverage of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Along with his team in Rio, he set a record for most coverage and most accessibility of the Olympic Games in Canadian history. With a total count of 32.1 million viewers, more Canadians tuned in to watch the Summer Games than ever before. Greg’s accomplishments don’t end there. He was also named to the Globe & Mail’s Power 50 list of Sports Leaders in Canada and recently completed a Harvard Executive Education programme at Harvard Law. His endless drive and determination has led him to have a successful and rewarding career. To current and future Ridleians, he offers this advice: “ There is no doubt that Ridley provides you with an incredible advantage over other high school students in Canada. With that, take the time to grow into something that you will be passionate about in life.”

“
A gift, however great or small, contributes to enriching the life and future of a child by enabling them to attend and thrive at Ridley College. The school’s emphasis on building a student with character and values by providing an education through inspiration, opportunity, and relationships sets Ridley apart. This is our motivation to give as we are fortunate to be part of this community and family. We truly appreciate the Ridley community that is helping to shape lives and educate our children far beyond the classroom. How wonderful to know that such a gift can positively impact the lives of young men and women poised to become our future leaders.

DIRECTOR of DEVELOPMENT
your support MaKes a dIFFerence to rIdLey students today and toMorrow. Over the course of the past year, I have been humbled by the support shown by our Ridley Family. There are many poignant and powerful moments: alumni from classes dating back to the 30s and 40s who have been giving consistently to the school since they walked through the Marriott Gates as young graduates; young alumni who have made their very first gift; and parents, grandparents and past parents who, grateful to Ridley for the opportunities given to their sons and daughters, have supported our annual projects. Many donations are accompanied by notes of gratitude for the financial support received in the past, for life lessons learned living away from home, and for the enduring friendships made.
In this Annual Report, we recognize and gratefully appreciate the loyal support and generosity of all donors to Ridley College, the Ridley College Foundation and the Ridley College Fund USA, Inc. Donor listings include individuals, companies, corporations and foundations that made a gift to Ridley between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016. Every effort has been made to ensure that listings in this report are accurate and reflect the philanthropic story for Ridley in 2015–16. If an error or omission has occurred, please accept our sincere apologies and notify me. Terar Dum Prosim, Susan E. Hazell 905-684-1889 x2211 or susan_hazell@ridleycollege.com

A HISTORY OF GIVING
During the year, I was fortunate to visit alumni, parents, past parents and prospective families at receptions across Canada, in Buffalo, New York City and Boston, in China and Hong Kong, Mexico, Bermuda, Barbados and Grand Cayman. Their stories of Ridley share a few common themes: 1) the great, and in many cases life-long, relationships that they created with fellow students, teachers and coaches; 2) the pride they share for their alma mater; and 3) their desire to give back and support their school and Ridley students today and in the future. It is my privilege to serve Ridley in raising funds, building new relationships and telling the story of Ridley today.

“
I am grateful for the opportunities Ridley has afforded me over the years. I cannot teach the power of generosity without living it.
DONATING IS ONE WAY TO SAY THANK YOU. As educators, we are always striving to enrich the Ridley experience for today’s students while ensuring opportunities for future students as well. As a member of the Ridley family, I choose to donate because I know the money supports the people and programmes that make Ridley so special.

COLLECTIVELY YOUR DONATIONS HELP US REALIZE OUR STRATEGIC PLAN VISION. The following projects were identified by the school for the 2015–2016 campaign. We are delighted that we were successful in achieving our goals and completing each of these projects. THANK YOU!
