2021 National Conference “RE-ORIENTING”

Our Mission RID has played a leading role in establishing a national standard of quality for interpreters and transliterators. We encourage the growth of the profession, educate the public about the vital role of interpreters and transliterators and work to ensure equal opportunity and access for all individuals.

What We Do - Our Desired Future The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf envisions a future where the linguistic rights of Deaf people are recognized as equal to those of hearing people, and are supported by RID members; where interpreted interactions are as viable as direct communication; where RID’s activities and members demonstrate value for the Deaf community and its members; and where the interpreting profession is formally recognized and advanced by rigorous professional development, standards of conduct, and interpreter credentials.

RID exists because of audism

A Shared Vision of Healing

Equity and Inclusion

Our vision is lofty, and our mission is heavy. And if we decided to actually directly fulfill our mission and lengthen our stride to realize our vision, what would it require?

It’s time to build the teams of qualified and diverse peoples around our work so that we can ensure we are living in alignment with our mission and vision.

Largely because of audism, RID exists. We were founded because people were lacking the services they needed to survive. RID came about out of an effort to organize around communication oppression

Development and Maturation

The RID National Conference 2021 will provide a wealth of information. We believe that there has to be an openness to the experience, and a curiosity around what might actually make sense.

The RID National Conference 2021 allows us to discover new ways of thinking, new ways of being, and new ways of existing with others.

Curiosity and discovery allows us to grow. And even with this, if we could grow further into our mission and vision, then we would be doing well.

A Return to Community “The seed sown at the [founding of RID in 1964], itself a long hoped for realization of visionary people....is advancing the image of interpreting to where it will become what we envisioned and hoped for, a conscientious, disciplined profession, a public service dedicated to the economic, social, and emotional benefit of deaf people.” - Mary Switzer

RID is the only organization in the United States that credentials both Deaf and Hearing interpreters to provide services in a wide range of settings, as well as test and certify interpreters for legal work. As of 2021, RID counts over 15,000 members, and supports affiliate chapters in nearly every state.

RID has become a model for interpreting throughout the world as an example of organizational standards setting in sign language interpreting, and in the development of testing and certification. The processes pioneered by RID provide guidelines for the development of professional standards, training, and practice in the field.

RID is at an inflection point. As the field continues to grow and mature, practitioners and communities are returning to community in developing a culture of partnership, respect, and mutual growth. We continue to push for improvements, and it is at this time we are “shifting” the story to the needs of our communities. We are “Re-Orienting.”
