Tove Jansson (1914-2001)
Finnish-Swedish writer and artist, who achieved worldwide fame as the creator of the Moomins, written and illustrated between 1945 and 1980. The books about the brave, adventurous, yet family-focused and homeloving Moomins have been translated into more than 50 languages and are still in print all over the world today. The Moomins were only a part of Jansson’s prodigious output. Already admired in Nordic art circles as a painter, cartoonist and illustrator, she would go on to write a series of classic novels and short stories. She remains Scandinavia’s best-loved author.
The Moomins and the Great Flood (Småtrollen och den stora översvämningen)
64 pages | Förlaget M | 1945
The first story about the Moomins was originally published in 1945. This is the tale about Moominmamma and Moomintroll’s search for the missing Moominpappa and how the family found their way to Moominvalley.
To celebrate the 80th anniversary of the first Moomin book and the start of all the great Moomin adventures, Moomin Characters and Rights & Brands launch the Moomin 80 campaign on 24th October 2024.
The central theme of the book, the sense of belonging, is the key to the campaign and the values of inclusiveness, kindness, family and community are lifted from the original story.
An anniversary edition of The Moomins and the Great Flood with a foreword by Frank Cottrell Boyce and additional illustrated material is the flagship title of the anniversary publishing programme. Other titles, including a pop-up book The Moomins Find a Home, will be available through Rights & Brands and our publishing partners. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is the charity partner for Moomin 80.
In Moominvalley, the door is always open.

Ilon Wikland artwork
Over 1000 images and illustrations in a variety of techniques are available for publishing and licensing purposes from Rights & Brands. The text rights are with The Astrid Lindgren Company.
Ilon Wikland (b. 1930)
is an Estonian-born Swedish artist and illustrator. In 1944 she escaped the Soviet occupation of Estonia and arrived in Sweden as a 14-year-old refugee.
She was later educated at Swedish art school Konstfack and in 1953 Wikland applied for a job as an illustrator at Stockholm-based publisher Rabén & Sjögren, where she started working with Astrid Lindgren. Wikland has said that Lindgren’s writing makes her see inner pictures. She also derives inspiration for her pictures from real life. Wikland illustrates in the the same way that Astrid Lindgren wrote - for 'the child within her'.
The pair worked together for many years and Wikland has illustrated some of the most appreciated works by Lindgren, including Ronja the Robber’s Daughter, Mardie, Karlsson on the Roof, The Children on Troublemaker Street, and many more.
Ilon Wikland has donated over 600 of her original illustrations, now to be enjoyed at "Ilon's Wonderland", a gallery and theme centre for children and families in Haapsalu, Estonia.

He has an unrivalled gift for taking history and casting it in a new and hilarious way, as well as for giving old stories and legends his own delightful twist.
Modest and well-mannered
Mr Clutterbuck is blissfully unaware of his reputation as the busiest sleepwalker in town. Not so his pet guinea-pig Gus, who has to chase his snoring master on his nocturnal adventurers full of humour and unexpected situations. Mr Clutterbuck features in four original books but he is a character every Finnish child recognises as he can also be spotted walking in the background on nearly every book illustrated by Mauri Kunnas.

14 Mauri Kunnas / Nordic Classics
In the hilarious picture book The Ghosts of Pippindorf Manor, Kunnas reintroduces the ghost family from his classic scary story collection The Great Big Spooky Book published in 1985.
The grandmother is annoyed by her grandchildren’s shabby robes with holes in them, even if the kids claim that it’s the fashion to wear torn sheets. She orders them new sheets online. When the kids open the parcel, the sheets turn out to be in colourful pattern. They think the new robes are cool and head out to spook as it’s Friday 13th, the night of ghosts. Their appearance causes havoc in town, some people get understandably scared but a bunch of ghost spotters start following them and try taking pictures of them, disturbing the ghosts’ celebratory picnic. Mr Clutterbuck also makes an appearance.
The laugh-out-loud funny ghost story in Kunnas’ inimitable style is a spot-on social commentary on generational clash, online shopping and poor postal services.

Age 6+ | 44 pages | Gads Forlag | 2022
Three frightening and magical tales to become the new Danish classics.

The son of a merchant inherits his father’s shop and a magic suitcase that can take him anywhere in the world. He promises his father to do what he never did: fly far away on the suitcase. But the son seems more interested in having a shop than travelling around the world.
There is a troll living on the third floor. Two brothers decide to courageously lure the troll to his death, leaving their younger brother behind. But the troll is not so easy to lure, even with pies and cakes, and their younger brother proves to be braver and cleverer than they assumed.
The Man-Eater, The Suitcase and The Troll on the Third Floor are three grim yet mesmerizing stories, written in the tradition of the best Danish fairy tales by Martin Glaz Serup, and illustrated with wonderfully thrilling pictures by Kristian Eskild Jensen.

Johanna Witick (b. 1982 )
is an artist, author and graphic designer from Helsinki. Witick has worked as a graphic designer since 2002 and become a prolific artist with her own unique style. Her love of art comes from her childhood when drawing became an important hobby, and this inspired her to create her own series of books with a quirky character, Ozzy the Squirrel. Witick’s inspiration for Ozzy comes from her childhood neighborhood with plenty of squirrels living and moving around nearby.
Stories from Squirrelvalley: Ozzy and Chirp (Oravalaakson tarinat: Ossi ja Titityy) Age 6+ | 48 pages | Otava | 2023
A colourful and quirky graphic novel, Stories from Squirrelvalley introduces small readers to Ozzy, a curious squirrel, who is adopted by a cautious snail. After finding an abandoned egg, Ozzy makes his way through Squirrelvalley to find a home for the egg, while meeting peculiar animals on the way. What makes this series stand out is the sweet but not saccharine style and humour with little jokes reminiscent of The Simpsons for a suitably young age group, and the world which expands beyond Squirrelvalley in the future books. This is a delightful read with many meaningful questions of who you are and what you want to be, including ignoring all advice by carers and even a philosophical dilemma of whether a wolf should become a vegetarian.

Siri the Viking is a comic series aimed at middlegrade readers. The amusing series mixes imaginative adventures with historical settings and facts about ‘the age of Vikings.’ The main character, a Viking girl named Siri, uses courage and cleverness to prevent the Viking villains Ivar and Grym from stealing treasures or plundering cities.
The comic format encourages reluctant readers, and fans of Asterix will get to experience the Viking stories through the eyes of a young girl. Many parts of Viking life are portrayed in a historically accurate way, and the layout supports the non-fiction aspect by including special fact boxes.

Rafsa - The Fight for Stonefield Trilogy
(Kampen om Stenåkern)
This trilogy introduces readers to Rafsa, a rebel marmot who doesn’t want to fit in and conform to roles and rules. She is courageous and thoughtless, selfish and loud, but also very loyal. Rafsa and her best friend, the thoughtful Kotten, live in Stonefield with her flock in a swarming and sloppy matriarchy. In the same field live the vipers, a hierarchical and violent group. When Rafsa and Kotten meet young viper Ziczac, both the differences between the two societies and the evil plan of the snakes are revealed. Their friendship grows, and the three friends realise that they are the only ones who can save the world as they know it.
The epic saga is inspired by The Earth Shall Weep and Watership Down, and in today’s tumultuous world it is frightfully topical. This dystopian story is also a big, bustling adventure full of suspense and humour – a story about friendship, solidarity and about how we can live at peace together and with nature.

A joyful and moving novel about family bounds and the power of friendship.
Hilla’s parents are divorced, and she lives between three different homes: her father’s, mother’s, and grandmother’s. Soon she’ll be twelve years old and has to choose with whom she wants to live.
She gets to know Bubo, a new pupil in her class and quite an atypical guy: he pretends that his father is a snowy owl. He suggests that they spy on Hilla’s parents and grandmother to help Hilla make her choice. But the spying isn’t just a game, and they encounter many surprises: Hilla’s grandmother isn’t all that well, and it turns out her mother has a boyfriend! And Hilla’s father, who can’t cook anything and sits in front of the computer all day, starts cooking in secret. But even Bubo has his own issues, driving him into loneliness.
Hilla and Bubo’s friendship is tested several times, but they will learn and grow – and they will learn to make themselves heard to their parents.
"Nadja Sumanen’s depiction of her characters spans three generations and is so warm and moving it’s a shame to part with the characters at the end of the novel! Rambo wants to be an ordinary 14-year-old boy, but he isn’t. The story’s theme is the social marginalisation and family problems that are so relevant in today’s society, but the book is nevertheless bright and hopeful. You miss Rambo as soon as the book ends."

Twelve-year-old Álfur is a gymnast from Kópavogur, Iceland. He’s a good friend, a lovely son, and the best big brother in the world. That is until one day his mum and dad tell Álfur that his little brother Eiki has been diagnosed with autism. Now they won’t stop worrying about how this affects their lives and how they will appear to others. They also do not consider that Eiki is still Eiki, their son and Álfur’s little brother.
Álfur’s gymnastics practice offers a place of solace away from the sudden change at home. Yet, Álfur wishes that his family could be normal – or what he thinks is normal. He decides to sneak off to visit his estranged aunt Harpa, the once famous gymnast who competed in the Olympics but ended up leaving in disgrace. No one in the family talks to her anymore, but Álfur wants to reconnect with his aunt.
Somersault is a compelling story about growing up, life’s complexities, and how nothing is black and white. It is also about volatile emotions and the strong bond between two brothers. The book was awarded the Icelandic Literature Prize in January 2023, and it has been endorsed by spokespeople in the neuropsychological field.

They are inseparable, but their friendship starts unexpectedly to crack as Mandi has a crush on a girl from their dance school. A fresh and cohesive verse novel with a narrative that resembles the spoken word.
Lilja is a pansexual in the ninth grade who constantly has a crush. Lilja has nicknamed her latest social media crush as Lovely. It turns out that Lovely is the child of Lilja’s single dad’s latest girlfriend which changes everything. Lovely appears to be a confident and conscious nonbinary on social media, but Lovely’s conservative mother has no clue about her child’s true identity. Lilja is faced with the question of whether she can accept the fact that her dad is dating a woman who seems transphobic. While Lilja wants to defend another’s right to be their true self, the book also asks whether one can be forced to show their true colours.
"The captivating and touching 'Lovely' (Ihana) is a whole and beautiful reading experience. The passionate rhythm of the language in the work manages to reach the experiences and the feelings of young people accurately and credibly. Becoming accepted as one’s true self, being seen and feeling loved is a vast theme that is handled sensitively and skillfully through the verse novel.”
