Tove Jansson (1914-2001)

Finnish-Swedish writer and artist, who achieved worldwide fame as the creator of the Moomins, written and illustrated between 1945 and 1980. The books about the brave, adventurous, yet family-focused and homeloving Moomins have been translated into more than 50 languages and are still in print all over the world today. The Moomins and the Great Flood (Småtrollen och den stora översvämningen)

64 pages | Förlaget M | 1945

The first story about the Moomins was originally published in 1945. This is the tale about Moominmamma and Moomintroll’s search for the missing Moominpappa and how the family found their way to Moominvalley.

To celebrate the 80th anniversary of the first Moomin book and the start of all the great Moomin adventures, Moomin Characters and Rights & Brands launch the Moomin 80 campaign on 24th October 2024.

The central theme of the book, the sense of belonging, is the key to the campaign and the values of inclusiveness, kindness, family and community are lifted from the original story.

An anniversary edition of The Moomins and the Great Flood with a foreword by Frank Cottrell Boyce and additional illustrated material is the flagship title of the anniversary publishing programme. Other titles, including a pop-up book The Moomins Find a Home, will be available through Rights & Brands and our publishing partners. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is the charity partner for Moomin 80.

In Moominvalley, the door is always open.

This is a story of farewells and the courage and inspiration to embark on a new path.

Tove Jansson is one of the most accomplished and honoured Finnish artists of all times. She achieved international fame as the creator of the world-famous Moomins. While her life revolved around the Moomins, she longed for something else.

Tove embarks on a around the world trip with her partner Tooti. At their first stop in Japan, Tooti gets hold of a Super 8 mm film that captures Tove’s travels around the globe: in Hawaii, at the ancient temples in Mexico and the United States. During the voyage Tove finds the freedom and inspiration to create something new. Tooti’s tiny camera also captures memories and life abroad. Tove Jansson's masterpiece, The Summer Book was also penned during these travels.

The Finnish Superwomen picture books, created by author Leena Virtanen and illustrator Sanna Pelliccioni, is a wonderful illustrated series, that explores the lives of Finnish artists and notable cultural personas: Minna Canth, Ellen Thessleff, Eeva Kilpi, Fredrika Runeberg and Larin Paraske. Tove Jansson is the latest independent title in the series.

Ilon Wikland artwork

Over 1000 images and illustrations in a variety of techniques are available for publishing and licensing purposes from Rights & Brands. The text rights are with The Astrid Lindgren Company.

Ilon Wikland (b. 1930)

is an Estonian-born Swedish artist and illustrator. In 1944 she escaped the Soviet occupation of Estonia and arrived in Sweden as a 14-year-old refugee.

She was later educated at Swedish art school Konstfack and in 1953 Wikland applied for a job as an illustrator at Stockholm-based publisher Rabén & Sjögren, where she started working with Astrid Lindgren. Wikland has said that Lindgren’s writing makes her see inner pictures. She also derives inspiration for her pictures from real life. Wikland illustrates in the the same way that Astrid Lindgren wrote - for 'the child within her'.

The pair worked together for many years and Wikland has illustrated some of the most appreciated works by Lindgren, including Ronja the Robber’s Daughter, Mardie, Karlsson on the Roof, The Children on Troublemaker Street, and many more.

Ilon Wikland has donated over 600 of her original illustrations, now to be enjoyed at "Ilon's Wonderland", a gallery and theme centre for children and families in Haapsalu, Estonia.

“Light, air, warmth, feeling and colour. That’s when the image comes alive.”

The Troll on the Third Floor and Two Other Tales (Trolden på tredje og to andre eventyr)

Age 6+ | 44 pages | Gads Forlag | 2022

Three frightening and magical tales to become the new Danish classics.

A man-eater prowls freely in town each night kidnapping people, so a young girl must go after the monster in its cavern to save her father. But what looks like a giant mole turns out to be a cursed man in disguise.

The son of a merchant inherits his father’s shop and a magic suitcase that can take him anywhere in the world. He promises his father to do what he never did: fly far away on the suitcase. But the son seems more interested in having a shop than travelling around the world.

There is a troll living on the third floor. Two brothers decide to courageously lure the troll to his death, leaving their younger brother behind. But the troll is not so easy to lure, even with pies and cakes, and their younger brother proves to be braver and cleverer than they assumed.

The Man-Eater, The Suitcase and The Troll on the Third Floor are three grim yet mesmerizing stories, written in the tradition of the best Danish fairy tales by Martin Glaz Serup, and illustrated with wonderfully thrilling pictures by Kristian Eskild Jensen.

"Several titles play with fairy tales, but here we are talking about a work that elevates itself artistically through genre play, iconic text, and a belief in the child's literary framework of understanding… The Troll on the Third Floor and Two Other Tales belongs in the premier league of children's literature."

What makes this series stand out is the sweet but not saccharine style and humour with little jokes reminiscent of The Simpsons for a suitably young age group, and the world which expands beyond Squirrelvalley in the future books.

This is a delightful read with many meaningful questions of who you are and what you want to be, including ignoring all advice by carers and even a philosophical dilemma of whether a wolf should become a vegetarian.

Rafsa - The Fight for Stonefield Trilogy (Kampen om Stenåkern)

Bulgarian, Danish, German and Italian rights sold!

This trilogy introduces readers to Rafsa, a rebel marmot who doesn’t want to fit in and conform to roles and rules. She is courageous and thoughtless, selfish and loud, but also very loyal. Rafsa and her best friend, the thoughtful Kotten, live in Stonefield with her flock in a swarming and sloppy matriarchy. In the same field live the vipers, a hierarchical and violent group. When Rafsa and Kotten meet young viper Ziczac, both the differences between the two societies and the evil plan of the snakes are revealed. Their friendship grows, and the three friends realise that they are the only ones who can save the world as they know it.

The epic saga is inspired by The Earth Shall Weep and Watership Down, and in today’s tumultuous world it is frightfully topical. This dystopian story is also a big, bustling adventure full of suspense and humour – a story about friendship, solidarity and about how we can live at peace together and with nature.

is a Helsinki-based author. With his 30 years of experience from the underground world of rock ’n’ roll and a touch of imagination, Pete came upon the story about Rock the Rabbit, an underdog and daydreamer, and Rolla the Owl, his howling companion, the budding rock stars of the village of Trickythicket. Leppänen works in book publishing. After business hours, he continues to create new rock tunes with his guitar to inspire the adventures of Rock and Rolla.

Meet the budding young rock stars of the Trickythicket village, Rock the Rabbit and Rolla the Owl, who are on their way to rock stardom. The duo starts their journey as an opening act for a famous band and then go on tour to become major rock stars. Their adventures are not without challenges, however, as they face difficult obstacles, mysterious sabotage, and even spooky sessions in the studio. After arguing with her friend Anna due to a broken promise, Yoko wonders who she really is, all the while there’s a virus making the world a different place.

The only place Mira feels at home is in the stables. In school, she is invisible. While the riding classes are challenging, Mira still finds refuge among horses. She meets Moon, a popular pony at the riding school, but after being injured, he is left abandoned. Mira steps in and secretly takes care of Moon, and soon they grow a strong bond. As Mira starts to dream about competing with Moon, she is afraid that Annie, the best horse rider, will find out about their secret and put a stop to it, separating them.

This heartfelt story is inspired by classic horse books and is set apart by its pacy storytelling and contemporary topics of mental issues, social awkwardness and loneliness.

Mira dreams of racing him, and it is now or never, because soon she will grow too big to ride Moon for competition.

With each riding lesson, Mira becomes a better and safer rider. But one day, the happy Moon is bouncier than usual as they are about to practice jump, leading Mira into an accident. She then decides to stop riding. Will Mira still find her way back to her best friend?

A Heart of Gold is about dreams and fears, friendship and betrayal, as well as about the love of a riding school pony.

But the spying isn’t just a game, and they encounter many surprises: Hilla’s grandmother isn’t all that well, and it turns out her mother has a boyfriend! And Hilla’s father, who can’t cook anything and sits in front of the computer all day, starts cooking in secret. But even Bubo has his own issues, driving him into loneliness.

Hilla and Bubo’s friendship is tested several times, but they will learn and grow – and they will learn to make themselves heard to their parents.

"Nadja Sumanen’s depiction of her characters spans three generations and is so warm and moving it’s a shame to part with the characters at the end of the novel! Rambo wants to be an ordinary 14-year-old boy, but he isn’t. The story’s theme is the social marginalisation and family problems that are so relevant in today’s society, but the book is nevertheless bright and hopeful. You miss Rambo as soon as the book ends."

As the Christmas holidays comes to an end, 11-yearold Nike realises she can’t go back to school. The staring gazes and loud noises of her classmates are simply too much for her to handle, not to mention the strong, overwhelming smell in the school cafeteria that almost makes her want to vomit. A darkness comes rolling in, preventing Nike from doing what she wants most – to be at school just like everyone else.

The town’s indoor swimming pool burns down, and Nike suddenly has a lot on her plate. With her best friend Mia, they are drawn into an exciting and rather scary mystery that they must solve all by themselves. Fortunately, Mia is the bravest person Nike knows, she dares to face both the police and the unpleasant school janitor. As the two friends come closer to finding the culprit, Nike must step in, and overcome her greatest fears.

One Hundred Days at Home is a fast-paced detective mystery that touches on important subjects such as mental illness, and focuses on the main circles of a pre-teen: the close surroundings, school and friends. The book is illustrated in black and white by Maria Sann.

Twelve-year-old Álfur is a gymnast from Kópavogur, Iceland. He’s a good friend, a lovely son, and the best big brother in the world. That is until one day his mum and dad tell Álfur that his little brother Eiki has been diagnosed with autism. Now they won’t stop worrying about how this affects their lives and how they will appear to others. They also do not consider that Eiki is still Eiki, their son and Álfur’s little brother.

Álfur’s gymnastics practice offers a place of solace away from the sudden change at home. Yet, Álfur wishes that his family could be normal – or what he thinks is normal. He decides to sneak off to visit his estranged aunt Harpa, the once famous gymnast who competed in the Olympics but ended up leaving in disgrace. No one in the family talks to her anymore, but Álfur wants to reconnect with his aunt.

Somersault is a compelling story about growing up, life’s complexities, and how nothing is black and white. It is also about volatile emotions and the strong bond between two brothers. The book was awarded the Icelandic Literature Prize in January 2023, and it has been endorsed by spokespeople in the neuropsychological field.

“The story is written with great stylistic confidence and deals with difficult issues with appropriate playfulness.”

Written and illustrated by Anne Vasko

Age 3+ | 32 pages | Etana Editions | 2023

It appeared out of nowhere!

None of the little bugs knew what it was or where it came from. Some thought it was a nest. Another said it might have been something to eat!

According to some, eternal night lived inside it. Every little bug and butterfly had an idea of what it could be, and everyone wanted it for themselves.

This book is an absurd story about a strange hat and its many twists and turns. Will the little bugs find a peaceful way to share the hat together?

The Hat by Anne Vasko, is the last part of a trilogy, which deals with serious issues and big emotions with a humorous touch. The first part of the trilogy, A Kiss is a gender-neutral love story of an airplane and a library car, and the second part , Pony's Tail is a crime story the size of a hobby horse.

The Magic Flower (Taikurin

kukka)

Written and illustrated by Marika Maijala

Age 3+ | 40 pages | Etana Editions | 2022

Aspen and Spruce find a strange plant in the corner of the greenhouse. The children water the plant and re-pot it. They do everything they can to make the tender seedling grow. They read poems to it, take it for a bike ride and a trip to the seaside. Regardless of their efforts the plant remains small. But in the garden a different kind of sprout begins to grow. What is this plant’s secret?

Illustrated with the most delicious gouache paintings by the ALMA-nominated Marika Maijala, The Magic Flower is a gentle philosophical story that ponders how important it is to let everyone grow in their own way.
