Tove Jansson

Work and Love Tove Jansson (1914-2001), Finnish-Swedish writer and artist, achieved worldwide fame as the creator of the Moomins, written and illustrated between 1945 and 1970. The books about the brave, adventurous, yet family focused and home-loving Moomins have been translated into more than 50 languages and are still in print all over the world today. The Moomins were only a part of Jansson’s prodigious output. Already admired in Nordic art circles as a painter, cartoonist and illustrator, she would go on to write a series of classic novels and short stories. She remains Scandinavia’s best loved author. Tove Jansson’s work reflected the tenets of her life: her love of family, of nature, and her insistence on freedom to pursue her art. “Work and love” was the motto she chose for herself and her approach to both was joyful and uncompromising.

Tove Jansson’s mother, Signe “Ham” Hammarsten-Jansson (1882-1970), was a Swedish-born illustrator and graphic artist. She was an acclaimed illustrator and caricaturist and the family breadwinner. Tove had a very close relationship with her mother, who became a vital coach for Tove in her career. The artistic Jansson family supported each other in everything. Their keywords were freedom, responsibility and family loyalty. (Family, 1942, Tove Jansson)

Sculptor’s Daughter: A Childhood Memoir Tove Jansson’s first book for adults. Fair Play

Tove Jansson

Letters from Klara and Other Stories

Fair Play depicts the love be tween two older women, a writer and an artist, as they work sideby-side, travel together and share summers on a remote Finnish island. Jansson’s philosophical prose about human generosity and respect perfectly echoes her signature subjects; work and love.

Tove Jansson explores the compl icated g ames and relationships between people in this short story collection. Letters from Klara showcases the differences in relationships and how a simple letter can reveal just as much of the sender as of the receiver.

The Listener

The True Deceiver

The Listener was the first of Tove Jansson’s books to be published after the death of her mother, the point at which she declared the Moomin series over. This collection of short stories is different from Jansson’s previous work; fragmentary, starting and stopping in the middle of things, concerned more with situations than plots. Fascinatingly, the illustrator Edward Gorey appears in one of the stories saying “It’s the unexpressed that interests me … it’s a mistake to clarify everything,” and that could well stand for Jansson’s writing here, too.

The lies we tell ourselves and the lies we tell others – this is the subject of Tove Jansson’s The True Deceiver, her most unnerving and unpredictable novel. Here Jansson takes a darker look at the subjects that are the core of her writing; solitude and community, art and life, love and hate.

The Field of Stones

Notes from an Island

Recently retired journalist Jonas leaves the city to spend the summer in the country with his two daughters. Tasked with writing the biography of the unpleasant ‘Y’, he soon finds it morphing into the story of his own damaged family life. Written with a light sense of humor, the dark contents of this book is easily accessible.

Notes from the island of Klov harun, with illustrations by Tuulikki Pietilä, the book covers all aspects of Jansson’s and Pietilä’s time in the Finnish archipelago. Also covering the eventual decision to give up their summers on the island, as ever showing Jansson’s willingness to discuss the more difficult aspects of life.

The Doll’s House (Art in Nature) A collection of twelve short stor ies about obsession and ambition. Witty, sharp and often disquieting, Tove Jansson’s stories looks at human existence, where puzzles and uncertainty, even illness and danger, have positive and magical potential. The stories also reveal the fault-lines in our relationship with art, both as artists and as consumers.

Sun City A darker version of a perfect world, mirrored through the population of a Florida retirement home. This book about alienation, abandonment and ageing looks at the subject of the ever present death and how some people simply choose to ignore it. Original title: Solstaden Extent: 160 pages

Wilder, Worse, Smiledon At pre-school, Annok and Karin are lions in a cage. The others want them to come out. Annok throws a doll at a mirror and all is broken. Karin wants to comfort Annok but she must go outside to calm down. There is not much to do without Annok, and Karin misses her when she goes. And Annok goes away, far, far away. She doesn’t come back. Wilder, worse, Smilodon is a book about a quiet person, wanting to be seen. About adults who don’t understand and parents that don’t fit in. About children’s powerlessness in times of great change. It’s about things that never go away. Particularly not friendships. Original title:

Mum loves the countryside. She loves the sea. She loves the wind. She loves the forest. But I’m afraid. Of the sea. Of the wind. Of the forest. Mum wants me to wee in the forest. But it’s dark. This is story about facing the dark and seeing light, even where there is very little of it, about conquering fears and embracing the world. It is beautifully intertwined with its scraperboard and watercolor illustrations.

Lena Frölander-Ulf is a Helsinki-based writer and illustrator of children’s books. Her book Me, Fidel and the Forest (Jag, Fidel och skogen) has been nominated for three different awards; the Toisinkoinen 2016, Finlandia Junior 2016 and Runeberg Junior 2017.

Aunt Nea and uncle Gunnar seem like very ordinary old people, with wrinkles, long earlobes and speckled skin. They water their plants and talk about taxes. But they have secrets to tell. Aunt Nea was once a dancer in diamond earrings, loved by the Maharajah of Burmanesh. Gunnar was once an artist who wanted to paint the grandest painting ever made. A book for any child who has ever met someone with wrinkles, and for those who have lived a life and got some of their own. A story where the wild and free meets ordinary family life.

In the Dark Forest there are crooks to catch, treasures to hide, and little wounds to care for. But one day, everything is different somehow. And Maurice the Marmot is a little different, too. The other animals in the Dark Forest say he is grumpy. That he doesn’t care. That Maurice the Marmot just doesn’t understand the meaning of good fortune. Or does he…? The story about Maurice the Marmot was inspired by a Chinese folk tale, written with lots of love and an inch of stoicism. Original title: Det är som

Vesta-Linnea in the Moonlight

Both Vesta-Linnéa and her mother dream of a cuddly little pet. When they eventually get a dog, it’s the luckiest day in Vesta-Linnéa’s life. Later, when it turns out that mum’s boyfriend is allergic to fur and they cannot keep the dog, it’s the saddest day in Vesta-Linnéa’s life. Then grandmother comes to the rescue and Vesta-Linnéa’s disappointment once again turns to happiness. This heartfelt story of a little girl’s longing, happiness and disappointments really tells it how it is.

After a fight with her siblings, Vesta-Linnéa hides at her favourite place by the sea. It’s a sunny summer’s day but Vesta-Linnéa’s thoughts are dark. She feels unloved and less important than the other children in the family. She is not the oldest and not the baby. Not even mum cares about her, she knows it! The fourth book about Vesta-Linnéa beautifully handles the subject of feeling alone and unloved. Perfectly describing the child’s emotions but also how the feelings turn and all is well again, in the end.

Vesta-Linnéa wants to go outside. She wants to and she doesn’t want to. Her sister cheers her up with a chocolate and they start playing. Suddenly her sister asks how it is that Vesta-Linnéa is so sad at times. “I always want to get up and play!” says her sister. Vesta-Linnéa doesnt’t know why but the starts thinking about being sad. How sad can you be? But she also thinks about happiness and what makes her happy. Mum, pancakes, sisters… How does that work? The story offers a wonderful combination of philosophy and insight, valuable to children and adults alike.

Prologue from Hallahem: The City Beneath the Mountain She sits, hidden, at the edge of the forest and watches them coming. It is a warm summer’s day. The sun is shimmering on the lake and lighting up their path as they walk. The couple stop by the little pebble shore and take off their backpacks. The woman hushes and coos over a little bundle on her belly, swaying it soothingly to and fro. Just like I do, she thinks to herself, looking down at her own little bundle lying in the nearby blueberry bushes. Her daughter is snug and asleep, unaware of the fate that awaits her. The couple on the shore have taken off their clothes and are making their way into the cool water. They have been here before. They know this forest well, and they know their child has just slipped off to sleep and is safe in its temporary cot on the shore. She has watched them before, followed them on their walks through the forest. She feels awful about what she is about to do. Her stomach ties itself in knots at the thought of it. But she recognises herself in the woman. They are not really so different. She sees no trace of malice in her, and can only hope that she has chosen well. The couple swim further out, talking quietly to each other. It is time. Gently, she lifts the sleeping child and edges towards the shore. With tears in her eyes, she kisses her daughter on the forehead. Quietly hums the melody she has sung to her since she was born, the same one her mother sang to her when she was a child. She whispers a final sorry before laying her daughter down on the shore and picking up the other child in her place. She disappears back into the forest as soundlessly as she came.
