Stig Lindberg (1916-1982) was a Swedish ceramic designer, glass designer, textile designer, industrial designer, painter and illustrator. One of Sweden’s most important postwar designers, Lindberg created beautiful studio ceramics and graceful tableware lines during a long career with the Gustavsberg potery factory. He also worked as a children book illustrator during many years.

Te Stig Lindberg design exhibition in Japan, scheduled for August 2025, will be a significant cultural event showcasing the works of the renowned Swedish designer. Tis traveling exhibition will visit six major cities, starting in Toko.
Tis exhibition will ofer Japanese audiences a comprehensive view of Stig Lindberg's contributions to mid-20th-century design, including ceramics, textiles, and industrial design. Visitors will have the opportunit to experience the whimsy and innovation that characterize his work and legacy.
Stig Lindberg traveled to Japan in the 1960s, marking a significant cultural exchange between Swedish and Japanese design traditions. Tis trip was pivotal in deepening the mutual influence between Scandinavian and Japanese aesthetics, which shared a common appreciation for simplicit, functionalit, and crafsmanship.
Lindberg was particularly interested in Japanese ceramics, which had a long tradition of refined crafsmanship. Tis influence is evident in his later works, which incorporated more organic forms and subtle color paletes, reflecting Japanese aesthetics.

Stig Lindberg was born and raised in Umeå, the Cit of Birches, something that is also reflected in one of his most beloved porcelain se t ings, Berså. His creations and illustrations have provided Sweden with household goods and design since the 1940s.
Te exhibit includes about 350 pieces, including porcelain, wallpaper, textiles, industrial designs, illustrations and art.
Tis ranges from his first student projects to his final works and never-before-seen material from the Lindberg family’s collection.
In collaboration with Millesgården and Lars DueholmLindberg, Stig’s son and manager of Stig Lindberg’s legacy. Te exhibition is a part of the celebration of Umeå 400 years.
