The Course - the Approach LANDSCAPE FILM 2018 - Spatial transitions APPROACH Landscape Film is a part time extensive design studio for eight weeks, focusing on media explorations with emphasis on film in interative design processes, which have no pre-given answers. Students define the nature of a final individual output, and they are expected to show a high degree of independent, individual initiative. They have the responsibility to meet the given studio requirements and are expected to engage themselves in an intense and time-consuming work process exploring new media. They will be confronted with intensive mind-set blowing work and gestures and language of design, where they have to think and work in-between and with a mix of media. They are expected to develop a design intervention on the basis of the media explorations. THE STUDIO SPACE The studio space works as an echo chamber of the students experiments and interchange with each other. Here different projections (horizontal, vertical), interchange of e.g. film and model and installations are tested. (Right: photo Emma Caporal Landscape Studio 2017) WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS, PIN-UPS, FILM SCREENING & LITERATURE DISCUSSION SESSIONS The course is structured around weekly assignments. The students explore the site in film, in models, in drawings, samples and notions on the

2

basis of six assignments. First week is a warm-up assignment meant to cover all media forms in its process and output. In parallel reading sessions of artistic methods, filmic mapping, notation and design students explore and discuss the relationship between the different media, actions made and its implication for their process and design. The sessions are supplemented by screenings of film each week linked to the weekly focus and pin-up sessions. Students develop the project during the eight weeks in relation to the weekly assignments, weekly feedback, weekly pin-ups and individual supervision sessions with studio teachers. KICK OFF This year the course started with a mandatory kick off excursion and exploration session at Arken, Museum of Modern Art, Ishøj. Students were expected to present their impression of Arken and landscape the week after in two 1 minute films or two films put together of total 1,5 minute, a 1:5000 conceptual spatial model and in 1:1 samples of material gathered on site.

This site was chosen for its interchange of the Køge Bay, Ishøj Beach, the urban fabric of single-story family houses, larger public social housing areas, the Ishøj train station and center mall situated near the station. A large Alphonse Mucha Exhibition at The Arken Art Museum at the time was also a perfect venue to address critical reflections on media meditation, slow pace, craftmanship, nature presence, inner silence and beauty - themes of today revisited due to the exhibition. The landscape of the Arken art museum Island being part of the artificial Ishøj beach had the perfect frame for discussions and the course exploration of the impact of media important for exploring the past, present and future society in a human-ecological perspective.

ASSIGNMENTS

RESEARCH QUESTIONS The first week’s kick-off / warm-up assignment work as a basis for the exploring the main questions of the Landscape Film Studio 2018:

• BODILY GAZE: Define and present spatial typologies/movies Ørestad in film and in a physical model of site. Supplement with diagrams of the various spatial typologies defined

• What defines a spatial condition?

• INTERVENTION: Define and present a spatial intervention in film of a possible new spatial future/condition of the site. Supplement with diagram of your conception/the concept of the intervention as spatial condition

b. How to conceive spatial conditions by film - in relation to drawing, model and material? c. How do movement, sound and the bodily engagement inform a design process and intervention? SITE The site of Landscape Film Studio 2018 is Ørestad C_ between Royal Arena, Fields, Ørestad metrostation, Tårnby and Nature park Amager.

• WARM UP: Define and present Ishøj, Arken and its landscape in film, model, drawings and material collection. • MOVEMENT: Define a concept for recording Ørestad C in film and present film and a 1:500 plan drawing with its spatial conditions. Supplement the presentation with a diagram of the concept for recording. • SOUND: Define and present the sounds of Ørestad C in a film/sound collage and through 1:1 physical samples taken of site. Supplement with diagram location of soundscape conditions and samples.

• TRANSITION/TRANSLATION: Translate the film of new spatial conditions at the site into a final proposal and installation that consist of mix of one or more of the following media: Film, (plan) drawing, model, 1:1 samples etc.

OPEN LECTURES Each year a group of guest lectures are invited to give an public lecture at the Landscape Film Open Lecture Format. For the last two years guest lectures by contemporary artists, filmmakers and architects have been open for everyone. Besides the open, public lecture some of the invited guest lectures engage with the landscape film students giving them feedback. This year guest lecturers were international renown artist and composer Jacob Kierkegaard; filmmaker and researcher Hans-Christian Post, and landscape architect and former UCPH landscape film student Sofie Stilling.

FINAL HAND IN A short film is expected as a main output of the studio. It should be supplemented with different media in an installation of different projections and A1 panels of drawings, models, model photos, samples. Students are especially encouraged to use and explore an integration of mixed media explorations in the final film and material/ installation. EXAM The exam is a portfolio exam with an oral examination of students A4 portfolio of film, models, drawings, samples etc. reflecting and discussing their process and outcome, as well as a presentation on A1 panels, models, sheets and canvas (film projection). The oral examination consists of at least a 1 minute film presentation, the design project and a 10 minute oral examination of the student on the basis of the portfolio. The 10 minute oral examination is based on both a review of the process and the design project and portfolio. Students prepare their A4 portfolio as a reflected documentation of their work/ process with the film media through the course, while the project design panels are prepared as design competition panel presenting the design process and intervention. The A4 portfolio and project design panels can (students are encouraged to) be handed in as a final installation.

Because of these, this area called for some kind of intervention. The model shows my first impression of the area - the abrupt end of the urban where Kalvebod FĂŚlled is drawn in, while this at the same time can be seen as a pretty picture rather than a landscape you can actually enter.

Assignment 6 . TRANSITION/TRANSLATION In this final assignment, all the former assignments are translated. This final film of new spatial conditions at the site, are translated into a final proposal and installation that consist of mix of one or more of the following media: Film, (plan) drawing, model, 1:1 samples etc.

Àngels Garcia: the green line represents the intervention in the area, as a connection between both sides next to Ørested C. Whereas the green dots show the interventions explained in the following pages.

Nanna Høgsberg: filmic section through the new extended bike lane creating a new connection between the (un)defined left-over spaces of Ørestad.

Laura Vangsgaard: ”Materially and medially communicated landscapes are interlocked in a complex reciprocal relationship. The study of one is not complete without the study of the other.” (Truniger, 2013). Photos from vertical film projection showing the relationship between materiality and media. In order to create atmosphere, film is projected on top of ´traditional´ architectural representation forms (model, plan, section) creating a new layer of representation and understanding. Karolina Kowarczyk:: by introducing a vegetation structure containing 3 substructures changing smoothly from one to another, a gentle transition from urban to natural can be experienced. From a rigid grid of trees through looser structure to natural-like forest creates a physical and mental transit. Link to film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8VrVsRDq58
