Riley Blake Designs batiks are ethically sourced and made with the highest quality fabric. Each hand-dyed print is designed and developed by cultivating relationships with true batik artisans in Indonesia.

From quilts, apparel, and home decor projects, our first and second releases will inspire and delight everyone from the most experienced sewist to those exploring the wonderful world of this centuries old fabric printing technique for the first time.

Tjap, pronounced “chop,” is a batik fabric stamp created with thin strips of copper that are manipulated by hand into florals, geometrics, or other motifs. These beautiful motifs are then welded onto a metal base. The motifs are typically denser and medium or large in design. Color combinations vary for more depth and Themovement.artofbatik making has been around for centuries. To create breathtaking batiks, a copper Tjap is dipped into melted wax and skillfully stamped onto a handdyed fabric. The wax sets into the fibers and conceals the color of the hand-dye. The fabric is then prepared for a second layer of color. Once the fabric has dried in the bright Indonesian sunshine, the fabric soaks in a hot bath to remove the wax from the fibers to reveal the striking and colorful design underneath.

Every two years, Judy Niemeyer and her team release a new Technique of the Month pattern. This pattern is meant to capture a wide range of techniques that are used in many of Judy’s beautiful quilt designs. Centered around foundation paper piecing, this project can be worked on by quilters over several months in a step-by-step process and connects quilters with Certified Instructors and Shops that can help meet their foundation paper piecing needs by specializing in Quiltworx offerings.

The April Showers precut collection is a wonderful combination of joyful, playful, and cheerful. It has the perfect tone for one of my favorite patterns, Rising Star. With just Rolie Polies and background (plus some borders), Rising Star is the perfect
design to showcase all those luscious fabrics in the collection. And who doesn’t love a star quilt!? This particular one is easy to assemble with a unique and simple technique to make those pointy stars—one that doesn’t need a ruler! I have been waiting for years to find the right fabrics to give my Daybreak pattern a new sophisticated existence. When I saw the Into the Woods precut collection, I knew it was time! I use the earthy browns and greens of the line to set the tone, giving it complexity with the two different background fabrics. But my favorite part is the teal that pops out from the warm hues and creates the magic!
I don’t know what could be more satisfying than having a playtime with your favorite software and coming up with a design that you are truly happy with. So when I started to play with different shapes one evening I was quite blown away as to what started to emerge. This design captures a lot of movement and as an added bonus, it is stacker friendly! This collection of precuts elevates this design to a totally new level!

Sometimes a design comes to life when you start playing with the value placement. And such was the case with JouJou. The dark portions of each block bring the design together, connecting the other elements. The lovely blues and greens soften this design beautifully.
I’m quite proud of my Finnish heritage. I wanted to capture the essence of Finnish designs, its simple elegance, in Majorelle II. The fabrics from Expressions, Batiks by Riley Blake Design were a perfect match to highlight the feeling I was after. The warm color palette makes it a welcome addition to any home.

Did you know that when a dragonfly lands on you, it means harmony and fortune are in your future. So that was the perfect name for our dancing dragonflies. I chose the jewel tone colors in the collection to represent the beautiful colors of these happy insects.

Flutterfly
As a mom of three boys, dinosaurs are a popular theme at our house! The Dino-Roar quilt is a fun way to highlight the many bright colors and designs of the Expressions fabrics. The dinosaurs in the quilt have prairie point spikes. My boys are quick to point out that not all dinosaurs had spikes, but they agree they are perfect for these quilty dinosaurs!

The many different purple batiks in Expressions immediately caught my eye! Why should I choose just one when I could choose them all? I mixed all the purple fabrics - lights and darks! - to make the butterfly wings of the Flutterfly quilt. The saturated colors really create a show-stopper!
