introduction
Hello! My name is Riley and I am a fourth year Interior Design student in The College of Architecture, Arts, and Design at Virginia Tech. I am passionate about art, design, and sustainability. My designs are based on creating spaces that promote health, well-being, and inclusivity. Our living, work and recreational spaces are best when conducive to being comfortable in our bodies, enjoying natural light and elements of nature, and allowing for flow of movement and interaction with others. Spaces with a low carbon footprint are essential in our changing world. I am eager to design these spaces that not only meet the needs of the user, but facilitate an enjoyable experience. When I am not in studio you can usually find me playing guitar, sketching, or going out for a run. I love to find inspiration in nature and I hope to create spaces that help others feel inspired.

DALLAS, TX
OFFICE SPACE Next is a global Architecture and Design firm looking to design a new office space in Dallas, Texas. The concept for the space is nexus. Nexus refers to a key point that connects a series of elements. This derives from the idea of Next being a design firm with a global network, the ever growing and changing network of architects and designers, and how employees crave connection in the workplace. This is displayed in the spatial planning through the use of two main hubs on the first level, the work cafe and the design library. The concept is displayed through design elements using angular forms with intersecting lines where vertices represent connections.

COLOR JUSTIFICATION The neutral color palette promotes comfort for the employees and allows for the firm to display work across the office space. The neutral palette also allows for a higher color rendering Index in spaces where employees are studying physical materials. The color orange promotes warmth, energy and creativity. Blue is representative of Next’s extensive global and technological network.

Amped is a record label rooted in reviving the lively energy of classic rock. Amped strives to elevate artists’ unique sounds while paying homage to historic rock legends. Amped not only believes that the spirit of classic rock invigorates and unites individuals, but aims to channel this through fresh sounds. “Amplified” plays on the Guitar Amp, an invention that gave the guitar and rock music a new voice. The electric guitar is one of the most easily recognizable characteristics of classic rock. Not only did the amplifier give the guitar a new voice, it expanded the platform and scale to which artists could perform. “Amplified” heightens impact throughout the space through the use of focal points, dynamic lighting, engaging textures, and bold colors.

CUSTOM LIGHT FIXTURE This fixture is a custom design placed in the center of the space. Its design emphasizes the idea “amplified” through repetition and scale. Each chord gets progressively longer and falls into a spiral shape that has six rings each increasing in diameter to come to a total of eight feet. The size of the fixture itself is impactful to the eye - but the design strategy is also symbolic of the concept it represents.

SPRING 2023 6 WEEKS PHOENIX, AZ ACADEMIC LIBRARY Libraries stand as keystones in social infrastructure, cultivating interaction and growth. Arizona, with its three national parks, embodies another facet of social infrastructure. The concept “Strata” is derived from studying the unique landscape of Arizona’s three national parks. Strata are defined as layers laid down in sediment changed by pressure and heat. The concept draws parallels between physical layers and the layers of information held inside libraries. Libraries and parks both serve as tools to cultivate community.

REYNOSA, MEXICO
REFUGEE HOUSING Senda de Vida “path of life” is an organization in Reynosa, Mexico that helps newly expelled migrants apply to seek asylum in the US with the help of immigration lawyers. The site is located on the Rio Grande, where over 1,200 migrants live along the bank in tents. Many migrants flee to escape gang violence, climate degradation, and to seek economic opportunity in the United States. The phrase “Hilo de la Vida” means thread of life; it’s representative of the passage to a new life. The thread is symbolic of the migrant’s journey and pays homage to Mayan weaving. The design of the space is an expression of continuity and fluidity, and it seeks to meet the need for constant adaptation. Suyapa is the single mother of a 6-year-old girl and a 2-year-old boy. They fled from their hometown, San Pedro Sula, Honduras, the second largest city in the country and the most violent city in the world.

The origin of Mayan weaving comes from the story of Ixchel, Goddess of the Moon, Ixchel grants the power of birth, life, and creativity. The back strap loom is portable and symbolic of the human body. The bottom beam is attached to the navel of the weaver’s waist. Mayan textiles are created traditionally by women, and the connection of the loom at the navel represents birth and creation. The diamond shape is symbolic of the arms of the weaver.
