BENTO HOTEL
Located in downtown Champaign, IL, the Bento Hotel takes its name after the Japanese bento box. A bento box is a Japanese traditional lunch box with multiple modules used to separate different foods. These modules can be stacked which allows convenience for transportation. The bento’s concept of small modules within one large module was used to organize the spaces within the hotel.

CHICAGO LIBRARY
The concept for the Chicago Library derived from the different levels of privacy and ranges of ages that occur surrounding the site. The different combinations of privacy and age informed the types of spaces available in the library. The concept also focuses on visibility throughout the library using elements such as the corner windows and the mesh enclosed staircase.

On the second, third and fourth level, there are lounge spaces that overlook the main atrium. These spaces can be transformed into a work area with desks and chairs rather than lounge chairs. On each of these levels there are study rooms in varying sizes. Three of them are closed rooms that can be reserved for study groups or other meetings. And there is an open study space on the fourth level.
.01 On the south end of each floor, there are combinations of chairs desks and stacks. On the fourth level is where the main adult fiction and non-fiction books are located. On the third level are the children and teen fiction and non-fiction (the children’s section bridges the west and east side of the library). On the second level are the computers and digital media. And on the first level is the largest open area that can hold different types of programs. Therefore, as the guest go up the floors, the quietness and privacy increases.
.02 Along the perimeter of the ground level, the long and high hallway acts as the secondary circulation of the library. Plenty of natural sunlight enters these hallways so that it is always well lit during the daytime. Because of the amount of sunlight it receives, tables and chairs are arranged along the hall for visitors to sit and read in the well lit space.
.03
The staircase that leads to all floors was inspired from Louise Kahn’s staircase. The stairs follow an equilateral triangle form that is inscribed into a circle. The cylindrical mesh container contrasts Kahn’s concrete cylinder making the flight and decent in the staircase allow users to always know where they are in the library.
.04 Large main space on first floor for multiple programs such as study space, guest lectures, conventions or gallery space. Option to close this area off from the rest of the library, making this space private and only accessible to members of the program. South facing windows allow plenty of natural light into the large space and glass corners that look into the lobby on every level.

URBAN BLOCK
Located in Chicago, IL, the Urban Block consists of residential and commercial units. Its form derived from the relationship between the heights of an adult and a child. This relationship was studied and shifted in elevation to allow for an offset of units in the residential as well as the art studio/gallery and daycare space.
Study of the relationship between an adult and a child. A smaller mass to offset the larger mass in elevation.
Mass of the site minus the setback requirement for residential.
Extend the commercial mass to site boundary.
Shrink the commercial mass and add an additional flat commercial mass under residential mass.
Push and smooth the edges of every other slice for contraste between rectilinear and organic masses.

SITE AXON Each residential unit consists of two stories except for four single story units. The residential units are offsetted in elevation so that every other unit can be accessed in a single level. Doing so will decrease the noise level in the hallways and increase the privacy of each unit. The varying sizes and orientation (relative to the sun and pleasant views of the city) makes for a variety of price ranges which can then leads to a diverse city block.
SITE FIGURE GROUND The site is a portion of an existing block in Chicago’s River North neighborhood.

ALLERTON PARK theater & artist retreat
Located in Allerton Park, IL, the Allerton Performance Theater’s form resembles of a butterfly in order to collect rainwater for use by the artist retreat on the site. The structure disrupts the existing landscape as little as possible and takes advantage of the hill to be used as the seating for the audience.
On-site sketch of centaur statue.
The structure of the theater consists of glulam beams that are shorter to each other to create a zigzag outline, mimicking the zigzag of the seating. The seats are arranged so that a ramp may go diagonally across. When the theater is not in use, the seating area becomes a play area for children or a large space for picnics. Visitors may also simply lounge in this area.

THIRD FLOOR PLAN
Using minimum square footage, the first two bedrooms with individual bathrooms are located on the first and second level. The kitchen and dining is shared on the third level where each of the artists’ work stations are located on either side. There are curtains hidden within the walls that can be pulled out to make the work areas private. The large floor to ceiling windows allow for plenty of natural light into the third floor as well as allow the artists to look out to the beautiful Allerton Park to draw inspiration for their next project.
7 SPACE HOUSE
The 7 Space House features a ribbon of windows along the outside walls. The windows provide plenty of natural light in all of the indoor spaces and the best views of its surroundings.
The main concept of this house is the ribbon of windows that wraps around the entire structure. When entering, the user is welcomed by a double heighted space with a wall featuring the random windows seen around the house to foreshadow the experience that lies ahead. The windows guide the users eyes around the space as well as provide daylighting and views as users ascend and descend the stairs.

The seven spaces in plan are taken from the randomness and the variety of sizes of the windows. The largest space for the double height living area (B)c , medium size spaces for the bedroom and kitchen (D) and the smaller spaces for the entrance (A), circulation (C), bathroom and terrace (E).
