RIM values our healthcare design expertise because of the positive impact we have on the communities that we serve. We bring to the table the core values of the communities where we live, work and play, and apply the technical expertise to develop health environments that are cutting edge and in step with current technologies. There is not just one solution that fits all; we understand the values of each community and how they shape the final outcome which allows us to drive to the core issues, no matter where we are asked to design healthcare environments. “Your team’s practical, proactive approach and thorough understanding melded perfectly with our combined goals of keeping the client and facility patients’ needs as our #1 priority.” - Patrick McNary, Project Manager, Jay-Brant GC

RIM has provided planning and design services for healthcare projects of all sizes. Our goal with every healthcare project is to create a healing environment that enhances the patient experience while optimizing healthcare providers’ abilities to provide professional care. To achieve this balance, we keep up with evolving trends in healthcare delivery and industry technology. Most importantly, we listen to the needs of our clients and integrate systems where applicable. We understand the importance of the relationship between the built environment, human health and healing and the value of the caregiver. We closely collaborate with our healthcare clients, enabling us to apply scientific and medical practicality to RIM’s architectural approach and cultural sensitivity for all healthcare projects.

WAI`ANAE COAST

COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH CENTER (WCCHC) C L I E N T:

Over 40 years ago, the “Kupuna Council” (Elder) of the Wai`anae community recognized that there was a need for healthcare services within the community. WCCHC has grown from being more than just a place where one comes to see the local doctor. Today, this building project represents the vision of the Kupuna and the community. Through the guidance of WCCHC’s leadership, the design incorporates native Hawaiian healing, cultural education, practices and traditions through native healers working in conjunction with other healthcare providers to honor the community’s traditions. These services should be housed in a design, whose form and function represents that quality of service. The community has responded by taking ownership and pride in their community healthcare center.

RIM recently completed the tenant improvement for this 9,300 SF new state-of-the-art rehabilitation specialty center that offers patients physical and occupational therapies, psychiatry, neurology, and occupational health services. Kaiser’s visions and local commitment was at the forefront of the design with a welcoming reception, and nature-inspired finishes to create a healing environment. Facilities provided include reception, clinic offices, physical rehabilitation gym, two small ambulatory treatment rooms, and support spaces such as an IT room, staff lounge, and equipment storage. Wood in reception areas with 3Form acrylic panels were used to accentuate reception counters. An “Art” wall was designed using prefabricated 3Form shapes near the entry area.

GUAM MEMORIAL HOSPITAL FAMILY BIRTHING CENTER C L I E N T:

The main design objective for the Family Birthing Center was to upgrade/modernize the facility to minimize the number of times a mother would be required to move during the birthing process and to allow the mother to have her baby with her at all times. The current practice was to move the mom 3-4 times, often without the baby. designed a space that is more patient and family centric, providing a faster healing process. Working areas were expanded to suit the needs for nursing staff and physicians, care providers, and medical staff. The design provided a cost-effective long-term solution to upgrade the facility. Design of the family birthing center included a special procedures room; eight labor and delivery rooms; three labor, delivery, and post-partum rooms; 15 post-partum rooms; one room for cesarean-sections; and a new nurses’ station.

PROJECT BRIEF: P R O J E C T:

KAPI`OLANI MEDICAL CENTER FOR WOMEN & CHILDREN C L I E N T:

RIM Architects developed a comprehensive master plan for the entire medical complex. The existing facility consists of a series of different structures constructed over the years, built without a strong vision for future growth. Due to changing medical techniques and procedures, the hospital wanted to repurpose many of its structures, and incorporate new uses and facilities. The KMCWC is located on a very compact site, and facilities are intensively used 24/7. The first step for the master plan was to identify, quantify, and document what future medical services and technologies were desired. Second, a phasing plan was developed to allow critical new facilities to be built in a systematic way that not only provided facilities in the order of need but also in a way that allowed the hospital to function effectively throughout a 15-year building program.

The facility consists primarily of labs, lab support offices, an entry lobby, and shipping/receiving spaces on the first floor with general offices and support spaces on the second floor. Mechanical systems are housed primarily in a rooftop penthouse above the second floor. Our project included a first floor renovation (approximately 3,650 SF) of the existing biosafety containment labs, expanding those labs into existing office spaces, and relocating those offices into a new first floor addition (1,400 SF) adjacent to the labs, along with associated mechanical system changes and new lab casework throughout. Access during construction was maintained for selected areas on the first floor. Offices on the entire second floor and the parking lot remained in operation during construction.

PROVIDENCE REGIONAL HEALTH CENTER

Health & Services acquired the 130,000 SF former Alaska Psychiatric Institute building (built in 1963) with the intent to renovate and reuse the building to consolidate Providence Regional Administrative departments and personnel from various locations into a single facility. The 4-story, Class “B” office building accommodates 500 administrative personnel and contains a single-story Crisis Treatment Center, operated by the Alaska Psychiatric Institute. The redesign maintains the existing building layout and maximizes open and closed office space along with conference, gymnasium and fitness center, meeting, lobby and break areas; storage; and other administrative-related spaces. Core support areas include retrofitted elevators, restrooms, stairs, mechanical/electrical and data rooms, and a mechanical penthouse.

PROVIDENCE ALASKA MEDICAL CENTER (PAMC)

RIM’s design continues the PAMC campus aesthetic and creates a healing environment for patients, staff and visitors. The buildings are oriented on the site to facilitate wayfinding and shorten travel distances between buildings. Walkways and therapeutic landscaping capitalize on the nearby Chester Creek Greenbelt, creating safe and comfortable areas for walking, sitting and relaxing. Infection control methods and disruption planning were implemented throughout the design to minimize disruption and impact. The office floorplate was deliberately designed to serve as a prototype for two future wings. The team was involved in adding a second 115,000 SF medical office building (MOB) wing, a parking garage addition that added an additional 446 spaces (for a total of 946), and another 48-foot skybridge connecting the second MOB and garage. |

ARCTIC SLOPE NATIVE ASSOCIATION

This new remote hospital replaces the existing hospital, serving Barrow and five other North Slope communities. Four times larger than the previous hospital, the new facility provides next-generation critical care and is designed to last at least 50 years. Through community input meetings, RIM and HDR worked together to create a design that serves as a destination/hub for the community and promotes community image, quality care and “a place to heal”. The two-story structure was constructed on piles to address the arctic environment in this northernmost hospital in the United States. All cold-climate design principles were applied to the design and construction. |
