LOCALNEWS BOOST FOR COLLEGE APPRENTICES

After this time, students will return to college where they will be awarded L2 business administration qualifications based on their performance, with the prospect of securing permanent office jobs at the end of the year.

SCORES of students have secured apprenticeships, thanks to a unique partnership between a college and a leading Northern employer.

Darlington College business development executive and account manager, Danielle Johnson said: “SLC is investing heavily in apprenticeships and has a great track record of offering them employment.

Darlington College has placed another 23 people with The Student Loans Company, bringing the number of apprentices taken on in the past six months to almost 50. Changes in legislation have seen the age group of candidates increase and the latest group features mature students and graduates from Darlington, Hartlepool, North Yorkshire, Teesside and County Durham.

“We have devised a special programme that allows them to use their work skills in the classroom and college learning in the office. Many of the apprentices recognise the importance of education and want to work for SLC to help other students achieve high level qualifications.”

After an introductory week at Darlington College, the students are working fulltime for a year, developing a variety of skills employed in a range of departments at the Darlington-based Student Loans Company.

Chelsea Hurman, from SLC, said: “We’ve been successfully running an apprenticeship scheme at SLC for a number of years, most recently with Darlington College.

Darlington College and Student Loans Company staff with the latest tranche of apprentices

“There is a growing band of apprentices making their way up the career ladder at SLC and are now helping the next generation of apprentices find their feet.” Charlie Lennox, 18, of Peterlee, sees the apprenticeship scheme as a better route into a career than university. He said: “I’m looking forward to developing my skills while earning and hopefully there’s the prospect of employment at the end of the apprenticeship.” For more details of opportunities at Darlington College visit www.darlington.ac.uk.

FAMILIES INVITED TO EXPLORE THEIR WILD SIDE IN DARLINGTON A NUMBER of local projects have teamed up, in an effort to enable young people and families to become more engaged in their natural environment. The Wild Green Places Project organised by the Tees Valley Wildlife Trust has joined with the Darlington & Teesdale Naturalists’ Field Club to deliver a fantastic series of family wildlife events and wildlife challenges throughout 2018. The aim is to encourage whole families to take part in a year of wildlife exploring, discovering and fun challenges. The Darlington Wildlife Explorers initiative is using expertise from the Tees Valley Wildlife Trust combined with enthusiasm and sponsorship from Darlington & Teesdale Naturalist’s Field Club. Darlington Wildlife Explorers

4 | Darlington Today

There will be three main events taking place over the year, kicking off with Nature’s Calendar on Sunday 15 April

at South Park, Darlington to explore the seasons. Then on Sunday 5 August, visitors can discover mini-monsters at Maidendale Nature Reserve, followed by fungi and foraging in Geneva Wood on Sunday 7 October. Wild Green Spaces Project Manager Sue Antrobus said: “We know that children love being outdoors and discovering wildlife, so we are really excited about Darlington Wildlife Explorers project, which will enable local naturalists to share their passion for wildlife with Darlington families. It’s also a great way for families to spend time together and learn together.” Darlington families, looking to get closer to wildlife this year can find out more information about how to get involved by contacting Susan Antrobus at Tees Valley Wildlife Trust on 01287 636382, or emailing santrobus@teeswildlife.org .

DARLINGTON MAKING STRIDES TO BECOME AN AUTISM FRIENDLY TOWN A UNIQUE shopping initiative designed to help people on the autistic spectrum is looking to become a regular event in Darlington. Following the success of the first Quiet Hour just before Christmas, a host of new venues joined in with this month’s event, including Laura Ashley, Vue Cinema, Boots and Mangobean. During the hour-long event - which is to take place on the first Sunday of each month - shops and other venues will be turning off their music and children’s rides to help create a calmer and more relaxed atmosphere. These changes will help those who need quieter surroundings, including elderly shoppers or people who have disabilities such as autism and dementia. The Quiet Hour has proved so popular with shoppers and retailers that many venues are

now working with the North East Autism Society to promote autism training to their staff. Alongside existing Dementia Friendly training, this will mean that Darlington can offer those with extra needs a helping hand to enjoy a safe and comfortable shopping and visitor experience. Kerrie Highcock from North East Autism Society said: “It is fantastic to be involved with Quiet Hour. As an autism organisation we know how difficult it can be for individuals with autism and their families to go shopping. “It can be something most people take for granted but, for many of our families, shopping can be a massive challenge. We will work with town centre outlets to help create inclusive environments as well as providing training for staff.

TOWN CELEBRATES SPORTING SUCCESS A MULTI-TALENTED athlete raced ahead of the competition to collect the overall winner’s trophy at a prestigious ceremony, celebrating grassroots sport. Young swimmer and runner, Alex Boyer was presented with the Ron Lewis champion of champions award at the 42nd annual Darlington Sports Winners Scheme Awards. Alex, 11, a pupil at Holy Family School, Darlington, also collected the Primary Sports Achiever award after enjoying a recordbreaking year. Alex won two British biathlons, swam the fourth fastest 1500m Freestyle time for 10-year-olds in Great Britain, broke seven swimming club gala records, won the town Year 6 cross country competition and set the Darlington Park Run 5k JM10 category all-time record in 19 min 49 sec. “I was very surprised to win especially when I listened to how good all of the other nominees were” said Alex. “I’m really pleased. I love sport, especially the feeling of achievement you get you when you succeed.” An audience of civic dignitaries, friends and family were invited to attend the glittering ceremony, which was hosted by Darlington College. Sponsored by Vauxhall dealers Sherwoods, Darlington Borough Council’s Healthy Darlington Scheme, Tees Valley Sport, Cleveland Bridge, Rotary International and Capita, Paul Bielby’s Master Skills Sporting Academy and Cummins, the spectacular event outlined courage and determination in sports enthusiasts across Darlington. Awards were also presented to Longfield Academy student Ross Howell for his contribution to school sport, Longfield Academy Under 13 Table Tennis Team, St George’s School Football Team, Carmel College student Layla Bell and The Red Hall Primary School Little Leaps.

Overall winner of the Ron Lewis Award at the Darlington Sports Winners Scheme annual celebration Alex Boyer, 11, also received the primary sports achiever trophy

And a stalwart of grassroots sport was honoured with a lifetime achievement award, with Ian Barnes, 83, being recognised for his commitment and passion to sport. Event director of the Darlington Park Run, Mr Barnes has been a member of Darlington Harriers for more than 60 years. He is also the British record holder for over 80s at a mile and 3,000m. Mr Barnes said he was “deeply honoured” to have received the award from former Mayor Councillor Lee Vasey. Event organising committee member Brian Dobinson said: “I must acknowledge the hard work and commitment of the committee, who really enjoyed going through all the nominations, and the many people who have helped to make this scheme a success over the past 42 years.” A special posthumous trophy was also presented to Nicola Maxwell in recognition of the legacy left by her son Kieran. The 18-year-old, of Heighington, lost his fight with cancer in June 2017. A keen sprinter, Kieran won a gold medal at the Brazil Paralympic School Games in 2015 and became a national champion in gymnastics. He was also selected to carry the Olympic torch through Bishop Auckland before the London 2012 games. The Kieran Maxwell Legacy was created to help raise funds to support the research into Ewing Sarcoma and childhood cancers.

“We see the Quiet Hour as just the start of an exciting joint working opportunity, to help make a difference to families and individuals all across the region.”

COLLEGE BOOSTS HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Darlington College art and design students Lily Carson, 16, of Brompton-on-Swale, and Liam Husband, 18, of Northallerton, with the partially completed Mandala artwork.

STUDENTS have been exploring their inner selves as a college community spent the week considering health and wellbeing. A host of visitors, including Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen, set up stall at Darlington College to sample a host of activities tackling mental and physical health issues. Other visitors included the NHS, NECA, the RFU, Durham Police, families’ charity DISC, healthy food specialists Fit Fresh and the Samaritans, while health and social care students also manned a display on CPR and the use of the defibrillator. And art and design students took their mental health messages into the community, with the L2 students taking part in a workshop on the Hindu spiritual symbol of mandala. They then created their own mandala designs which they took to the town’s Queen Street shopping centre for the public to colour in, which is said to be effective for reducing stress.

Climb of a lifetime A Darlington man is excited to undertake the climb of a lifetime this March and he’s delighted at the support he’s received from local schools. Steve Graham is a local heating engineer, property developer and mountain climber who has climbed mountains all over the world, raising thousands of pounds for charity. Ten years ago, Steve pledged to climb the Seven Summits, the tallest peaks on each of the seven continents, and this March he will tackle his greatest challenge yet: Mount Everest. Steve is using his climb to raise money for St Teresa’s Hospice and Prostate Cancer UK, in gratitude for the help both charities provided to his grandad, who sadly passed away from terminal cancer. Steve has been visiting local schools to talk about the climb and encourage students to help fundraise for the Hospice. One such school is Reid Street Primary, where students have been sponsored to walk, as a school, the same distance around their playground as Steve will travel from the bottom of Everest to the peak. Steve said: “Preparing for the Everest expedition is a serious business regarding physical 6 | Darlington Today

and mental conditioning. I’m really looking forward to this next stage of my challenge and raising charitable awareness with the help of Reid St School is a bonus that myself and my charities are extremely grateful for. Quitting is not in my nature. I will not give up on the mountains, nor will I give up in my quest to get to the top of them.” Steve begins his adventure on 25th March. If you would like to support Steve please contact the St Teresa’s Hospice community fundraising

team on 01325 254321. You can also follow Steve’s progress at www.7summitsteve.com.

TRIED AND TESTED

Buttermilk Caramel Sea Salt Egg

It wouldn’t be spring without Easter eggs and with so many to choose from, finding the right egg can be a tough decision. To save you having to go on your very own Easter egg hunt, Bronia McGregor has tried and tested a selection of our favourites.

Wilko, Elizabeth Shaw Mint Collection Easter Egg

The first thing that strikes you about this egg is its appearance. Decorated with butterscotch chips, it adds an element of indulgence that makes it stand out from the other chocolate eggs on the shelf. And this is the egg that keeps on giving, because when you crack it open you find a bag of buttery caramel sea salt fudge inside that melts in your mouth. Price £11.99

Tesco, HARIBO Chick ‘n’ Mix

Honeycomb crisp adds a welcome crunch to this mint chocolate egg. Rich dark chocolate blends seamlessly with the mint and there are even 12 mint dark chocolates inside as an added bonus.

If chocolate eggs aren’t your thing then this adorable Chick ‘n’ Mix box might just be the Easter treat you’ve been searching for. Filled with chewy bunny and lamb shaped jellies, tangy chicks, flower shaped marshmallows and even the favourite fried eggs from Starmix, these spring themed sweets are a perfect chocolate free treat. Price £2.50

Price £8 Darlington Today | 9

Holland and Barrett, Booja Booja Almond and Sea Salt Caramel Truffles For those who are avoiding dairy, Booja Booja has a fantastic alternative to a chocolate egg. Encased in a stunning, hand-painted egg, these indulgent almond and sea salt caramel truffles are so creamy that you’ll struggle to believe they’re actually vegan. Price £9.99

Carluccio’s Box of 4 Gianduja Eggs Packaged in a plastic egg box, Carluccio’s is offering a quirky twist on the Easter egg. These milk chocolate shells are hand filled with creamy Gianduja – an Italian chocolate hazelnut spread – and topped off with white chocolate to create the illusion of a real egg. Price £10.95

Oxfam, Divine Luxury Dark Egg with Salted Caramel Mini Eggs Made from organically farmed cocoa beans, the hollow egg is made with smooth dark chocolate and comes with salted caramel mini eggs - the perfect sweet and savoury flavour combination. The packaging is made from recycled cardboard with no plastic, so you rest assured that you’re doing a good deed for the environment at the same time. Price £10

Holland and Barrett, Cocoa Libre Dairy Free Chicks Not quite an egg but these chocolate chicks are another option for those with a dairy free diet. Made from creamy rice milk, these sweet chocolate treats look cute and taste great too. Price £4.69

Hotel Chocolat, Extra Thick Champagne Egg

Tesco Finest Gin and Elderflower Egg

This egg may be more on the expensive end of the Easter egg spectrum but it’s not hard to see why. The extra thick shell is made with half creamy milk chocolate and half strawberry-white and milk chocolate to create a stunning finish. Champagne and pink champagne truffles filled with real French Mercier Champagne add an extra element of luxury to this egg. Price £27

Why choose between milk and dark chocolate when you can have both? This stylish egg looks so good you won’t want to crack it. Chocolate infused with gin and elderflower adds a touch of sophistication to the classic Easter egg and it comes with six delicious gin and elderflower truffles that you won’t want to share. Price £10

Hotel Chocolat, Sunny Side Up Easter Truffles If you’re looking for something different to the hollow eggs on offer then these expressive truffles might just tick the box. With four different flavours – chocolate and cream, caramel and roasted pecan praline, whipped cream and Madagascan vanilla and a smooth hazelnut praline - these creamy chocolates certainly give the traditional Easter eggs a run for their money. £8

First phase of multimillion pound investment underway at Blackwell Grange Hotel A multi-million pound investment at Blackwell Grange Hotel has reached its first milestone, with the opening of the brandnew Bruhenny Suite. The prized Darlington hotel’s five-year remodelling and refurbishment plan is now well underway, with the opening of the half a million-pound Bruhenny Suite marking the first successful step. The Bruhenny Suite has undergone a complete transformation and now presents a show-stopping fireplace, perfect as a wedding ceremony feature, a new upstairs bar with an extensive drinks menu and all new modern but authentic interiors. Dawn Raine, general manager at Blackwell since 2005, said: “We couldn’t be happier with how the work has gone on the Bruhenny Suite – the final look hasexceeded all of our expectations.

“The feature fireplace is beautiful, and with six new roof lightsthe space is now bathed in natural light which makes it feel so bright and airy. I’m sure we’re going to have a lot of happy guests attending weddings, events and meetings. The complete refurbishment of the feature Blackwell Lounge and main Reception has also been completed – restoring the country house style and glamour of years past. “We can’t wait until all of our public areas are complete, the vast majority of which will bebefore the end of April,so we can present Blackwell Grange’s finished new look to the public. Plans for an official launch are being made, so watch this space!” The focus of this initial phase of refurbishment is the public areas of the hotel, including the main reception and lounge, three function suites and four bars; breathing new life to these historic areas in an enhanced contemporary country house style. The fresh new interiors of the Bruhenny Suite were the work of Simon Bartlett, managing director at Simon Bartlett Interiors who explained: “The hotel is a magnificent building which is steeped in history and with that in mind, we have steered away from a modernistic approach and have instead looked at the classic features to revert this back to its former splendour. “Comfortable and aesthetic, the design combines new and old grand design, with plump upholstered seating with deep button fabrics and vintage finishes; creating a classic, timeless design with plenty of atmosphere.”

extensive experience within the leisure and hospitality sectors. Director Simon Crowe, said: “The refurbishment of the new Bruhenny Suite has seen the room transform into a light, spacious and high quality wedding and conference venue which will re-establish Blackwell Grange Hotel as a ‘destination’ in Darlington and the surrounding region. “The Bruhenny Bar provides a sophisticated blend of contemporary and traditional styles to create a wonderful secluded addition to the Suite.” Refurbishment of the public areas is set to continue, with the transformation of main hotel bar already in motion. It will be named the Blackwell Bar and reopened on Friday March 23. On March 26, work will begin on the what was known as the Parlour, which will become the Elk Room, Miss Allan Bar and the Havelock Bar. These are set for completion on April 19, 2018. The hotel is now taking bookings for weddings in the new Bruhenny Suite, which seats 180 guests for a dinner and 140 for a dinner dance. And on 17 June he’ll be turning his attention to Darlington with Dan Snow: An Evening with ‘The History Guy.’

DAN Snow is a man on a mission – to bring the past firmly into the present. “I love history. It’s everywhere. It’s everything that ever happened to anyone who has ever lived on this planet,” he said. And, to spread the word, he has not only launched his own online TV channel, History Hit TV, but is also embarking on his first ever national theatre tour. Because, when it comes to making sense of the present or preparing for the future, Dan reckons there is no better place to look than the past. “History is not all about dead kings, old libraries and dust,” he said. “It’s everything. It’s your parents’ eyes meeting across a crowded room and why we are who we are and why we are speaking English and why it’s acceptable for women and men to mingle together.” Dan’s presenting career began when he joined forces with his broadcaster father Peter to make the BAFTA award-winning series Battlefield Britain. He has since gone on to make programmes on a number of historical

During the show, Dan, who has a regular history slot on the BBC’s The One Show, will share anecdotes from his career as a historian and broadcaster – and he wants the audience to share their thoughts with him.

“I hope people walk out of the Hippodrome saying that they had a really good time. I also hope they leave having thought deeply about the past of their town, their country and their world.” Dan Snow: An Evening With The ‘History Guy’ On The History Hit UK Tour 2018, will be at the Darlington Hippodrome on Sunday 17 June. Tickets are available by calling 01325 405405 or via www.darlingtonhippodrome.co.uk.

By joining like-minded ladies committed to the cause, women can unite against a disease that affects us all in some way. Whether they plan to pound the pavements or amble to the finish line, every step participants take will help to support crucial research.” The charity is inviting women of all ages, shapes and sizes to take part in Race for Life 5k on Sunday 10 June at South Park, Darlington. There’s no better time to sign up right now at www.raceforlife.org Taking part in Race for Life is a hugely moving experience as people come together to remember loved ones lost to cancer, celebrate the lives of those dear to them who have survived or support those going through treatment. Lauren Robertson, Cancer Research UK’s Darlington Event Manager, said: “We are urging women in Darlington to sign up to Race for Life. “By signing up to Race for Life, women in Darlington can make a real difference in the fight against cancer. Money raised will help Cancer Research UK scientists and doctors find new ways to prevent, diagnose and

One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy, Half Marathon and Hiking events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer sooner by funding crucial research. Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work relies on the public’s support. Thanks to the generosity of its supporters, the charity was able to spend over £4 million last year in the North East on some of the UK’s leading scientific and clinical research - helping more men, women and children survive the disease.

Lauren added: “Every day, 40 people are diagnosed with cancer in the North East*. That’s why we’re calling on ladies in Darlington to sign up right now and join women from every walk of life at the start line this summer. “Money raised through Race for Life is helping to drive research to help beat over 200 different types of cancer - that’s why every step, every person and every penny raised counts.”

SUMMER OF MUSIC Bronia McGregor takes a look at everything there is to look forward to when Hardwick Live returns later this year Fans of the multi award-winning band can enjoy live performances of the Kaiser Chiefs’ best known hits, including Ruby, I Predict a Riot and Every Day I Love You Less and Less, as well as tracks from the bands most recent album. And because double the days means double the performances, music fans will be treated to a second headliner on the Sunday alternative rock band, the Happy Mondays. Formed in the 1980’s in Manchester, the internationally acclaimed Happy Mondays will take to the stage to perform some of their major hits such as Step On, Kinky Afro and 24 Hour Party People.

Grab your wellies, a pair of sunglasses and a tent, because the North East’s hottest live music event is back this summer – and it’s bigger than ever before. Hardwick Live Festival will return in August and this year the star-studded performances will take place from Saturday 18 to Sunday 19 – with the festival being extended across two days for the very first time. So music fans rejoice, because that means that twice as many acts will be taking to the festival stage, which takes place on the grounds of Hardwick Hall, Sedgefield. Headlining the festival on the Saturday are indie favourites, the Kaiser Chiefs, headed up by frontman and former The Voice UK judge, Ricky Wilson.

Also headlining on the Sunday are 90’s Britpop band, Shed Seven, who last year released their first studio album in more than a decade. John Adamson, owner of Ramside Estates which runs Hardwick Live Festival, is delighted with the line-up. “We had an amazing year last year which is why we have decided to go for two full days this year,” he said. “The acts are amazing and we should be adding other names as time goes on. “It absolutely will be a year to remember.” Other confirmed big name acts on the jampacked line-up include Feeder, Public Image Ltd, Echo & The Bunnymen, Melanie C and Heather Small. Hardwick Live is also boasting an impressive DJ line-up this year, with a number of wellknown names taking to the decks over the weekend.

Those attending will be able to enjoy music from Danny Rampling, Graeme Park, Greg Wilson, Brandon Block, Alex P, Linden C, James Parker, Tony Hutchinson, Steve Butler, Michael Johnson, Peter Wharrier and Rob Oxley. And in between acts, festival-goers will be able to keep themselves entertained with a whole host of activities and events that are taking place across the site. Fairground rides, a food village, a comedy tent and a silent disco are just some of the activities that people can make the most of over the weekend. As well as the food village, this year Hardwick Live will be offering something a little different to the food many expect at festivals – by hosting a unique dining experience prepared by celebrity chefs. Tickets for Hardwick Live 2018 are now on sale, priced at £49 for one day or £89 for both. Concessions are available for children and 13-17-year-olds. There are both camping and glamping options available for those who wish to immerse themselves in the complete festival experience. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.hardwicklive.co.uk.

COMPETITION For a chance to win two tickets to a day of your choice, simple answer the following question: What show was Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson a judge on?

WIN A TUDOR TREAT AT LUMLEY CASTLE…

This month we have a Tudor treat in store for one lucky reader - at one of the North East’s best loved venues. On selected dates each month four-star Lumley Castle Hotel, Chester-le-Street, turns back the clock to 1595, with its famous banquets - giving diners and partygoers a fun-filled night, Elizabethan-style. On arrival at the castle guests are led to the dungeons before being piped into the opulent Baron’s Hall and seated on benches for dinner, which is served by Ladies of the Court and eaten with a dagger instead of cutlery. To accompany dishes, such as sticky pork ribs and honey-baked chicken, diners are served red wine and mead in earthenware goblets. Meanwhile, in between courses, the Castle’s Lord Chamberlain entertains diners with tales of yore and local legends – including the sorrowful story of Lily of Lumley

who was thrown into the castle’s well by priests and whose ghost has been seen by countless visitors and staff over the years. Throughout the evening the Lords and Ladies of the Court, dressed in period costume, perform sketches and a variety of songs, from traditional North East folk ballads to a rousing finale of more popular tunes, with diners encouraged to join in when they can. Finally, guests can round off the evening by dancing to a disco in the dungeon – or even extend the evening with an overnight stay in one of Lumley’s 73 bedrooms. To celebrate Lumley Castle’s 630th birthday this year, we are giving one lucky reader and their guest the chance to join the banquet and stay overnight with breakfast the following morning.

IT’S A COUNTRY OF MYSTERY AND SURPRISES – BERNICE SALTZER DISCOVERS THE TRUE FACE OF INDIA It was the television’s fault. Deciding on a holiday destination while you’re watching a tv show is bound to influence your decision. And so it was for my husband and I, having just viewed the highly entertaining The Real Marigold Hotel. “Let’s go to India,” I said. Fast forward a few months and here we were, boarding a plane for what we hoped would be an adventure of a lifetime. Because the country is so vast, it’s inevitable that – unless of course you’ve got the luxury of months of spare time – that you have to make a decision 28 | Darlington Today

about where you’re going to visit. Inspird by the tv show, we headed for Kerala, the strip below Goa down the western coast of India which is known for its picturesque scenery and its breathtaking canals known as the backwaters. It’s a long trek from the North East – think Newcastle to Amsterdam to Mumbai to Cochin – but boy is it worth it. We spent our first three days in Cochin, home to the biggest shopping centre in the area, the Lulu mall. Although at first glance it may seem very westernised

with its gloss and familiar names, there are some very unusual aspects. Most restaurants are vegetarian or only offer chicken as the meat choice – hence you’ll find a McDonald’s with lots of veggie options on the menu. But who travels to go to chain store restaurants when there are so many other delights in store? The magnificent Chinese fishing nets – a feat of engineering – Fort Cochin with its amazing buildings and Jew Town with its 400 year old synagogue are just some of the sites to be seen. Wanting to see as much of the area as

we could, we made the wise decision to use an Indian tour company which not only booked our hotels along the way but also provided us with a driver for the duration of the trip. This is the way to see the real Kerala, because so many places are off the beaten track that without a car – and you certainly wouldn’t want to drive yourself- you simply couldn’t cover the country. First stop was to Munnar, travelling through lush forests with monkeys running across the road and only pausing to enjoy freshly cut pineapples at a farm. In the heart of tea plantation country, our destination was the amazing Chandy Windy Woods hotel, carved high out of a mountain and with its own “enchanted forest” running through the centre of the hotel.

It set the bar for what was to follow – the wonder of a night on a houseboat from Allepey around the backwaters, the joy of Thekkady and a visit to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in search of tigers, watching a mongoose run along the beach at the B’Canti Beach Resort at Varkala and being overawed by the majestic golden eagles swooping into the water to get fish at Trivandrum. India is a country of constant surprises and one where I put aside all my misconceptions. The people are warm and welcoming, the food is fantastic and in a world where so much is familiar, it is exciting and new. Put it on your travel list- you won’t be disappointed. • We travelled with KLM to India from Newcastle and booked our itinary, hotels and driver through Holidayz Mart – www.holidayzmart.com
