VANESSA SUPPORTS BODY POSITIVITY She’s been called the most hard working woman in radio, she’s renowned for her no nonsense approach – and now Vanessa Feltz tells Bernice Saltzer why she’s supporting the UK’s first Body Positive Awards. When you’ve made your name by being outspoken, it’s not exactly surprising that Vanessa Feltz has plenty to say about social media.
when we could be doing so many other things to spend our times saying we hate our body,” she said.
Digitally enhanced images are a massive no-no for the glamorous grandmother, who wants to get the message out that women should stop chasing “fake perfection” and instead concentrate on enjoying their lives.
“I love the Kardashians but we shouldn’t be spending our life chasing a dream of trying to look like one.
The renowned journalist claims that the constant desire to have a social mediaperfect body is causing a huge amount of stress for women of all ages. And now she is calling on women to “love who they are” and recognise that what they see on social media sites is not only unreal but unrealistic. Vanessa has spoken out after agreeing to host the UK’s first ever Body Positive Awards this summer (22 June) which are being organised by Ashleigh “Money Saver” Swan to champion the body positive activists and retailers who cater for those who aren’t standard sizes. Mum-of-three Ashleigh gained national attention after going online to post special offers and deals to help those who may not have a huge amount of spare cash and now her website offers a range of different options, including her own Ashleigh Plus Size section. For Vanessa, focusing on a body positive message is extremely important. “I just feel it is a terrible waste of life
“It’s crazy that we see these images that we know have been manipulated and are the result of make-up artists, hairdressers and a whole team of people, while deep down we know that people don’t really look like that. “We should all embrace who we are, recognise that we’re all different. Yes, be healthy, be active but don’t spend your life trying to fulfil some impossible fantasy.” The broadcaster praised Ashleigh for putting the awards together. “Thankfully these days there is a broad range of clothes available for women of all sizes and not just those that are just functional but which really embrace current trends. “Women should be colourful, be creative in what they wear and the awards will recognise retailers who offer the clothes to do that.” The broadcaster – who presents every day on BBC Radio 2 and Radio London – revealed that she is now happy with her body. “I’m only human so I do have days when I am not happy with myself,” she revealed.
“And I had a gastric band in 2010 so that does help check my weight but really to me it’s just about staying active and ensuring that I’m around as long as possible for my daughters and grandchildren.” Vanessa is hoping there will be massive support for the awards, which will culminate in a glamorous ceremony in London in June. Categories include the most engaging plus size blog, top plus size social influencer and leading body positivity campaigner. The awards will also honour the best value plus size range, top swimwear and lingerie for plus size, best footwear, top new retailer and best high street, independent and online retailers. The top body positive publication will also be among those celebrated, with the judges naming the plus size retailer of the year from the entrants across all categories. “Hopefully this will be the first of many Body Positivity awards and I’m looking forward to being a part of it,” she said. IS THIS THE WAY TO BILLINGHAM? Bronia McGregor caught up with Tony Christie ahead of his new UK tour coming to Billingham Forum Theatre.
W
ith a career spanning five decades, more than forty albums, seventy singles and countless live performances, Tony Christie has no intentions of slowing down. “I just love performing live,” he said. “I do think that if you retire, you die. Music is my life and I love doing it.” And Tony is particularly looking forward to performing at the northern dates of his tour. “I’ve spent a lot of time in the Darlington area. The northern club circuit was where my career took off – they were my main audience.
“It happened very quickly. Peter Kay rang me up and asked if he could use the song and if I could be in London the next day to film the video. “I had on a horrible suit which had to be pinned as it was so big and we did it in one take, which I thought was the rehearsal.”
“I was performing in the Midlands, the North and Scotland so it’s always nice to go back to where it started.”
The song reached number one in the charts, where it stayed for seven weeks and went on to become the biggest selling single of 2005.
On the tour, fans will be able to hear his much-loved classic tracks, such as Las Vegas, I Did What I Did For Maria and Avenues and Alleyways, as well as his more recent hit, Walk Like A Panther, featuring All Seeing I.
Those looking forward to the tour will be delighted to hear that Tony has a new album coming out at the end of the year – with a distinctly different sound than fans might be used to.
The song, which Jarvis Cocker wrote for Tony Christie, propelled him back into the UK charts in 1999 – but it might surprise people to know that he had no idea at the time. “I was living in Spain with my wife and performing all over Europe and my son, Sean, rang me and said ‘They’re playing that song to death on the radio’ and then it was on Top of the Pops,” said Tony. And he enjoyed another resurgence of chart success in the UK when Is This the Way to Amarillo was rereleased in 2005 for Comic Relief, with a video of Peter Kay miming along with various celebrities, including Tony himself. 10 | Darlington Today
“It’s very modern and has a very pop sound. I was sceptical at first but I heard this music and thought, this is incredible. “It was hard to choose the singles because they all sound like singles to me. “There are no plans as yet to perform any of the songs from the new album on this tour, but if I have time to get together and rehearse with the band then you never know.” As well as recording new music and planning a nationwide tour, Tony also found time in his busy schedule to take part in Celebrity 5 Go Barging, which aired earlier this year.
“Everyone ran around trying to sort things out and I stood there with a cup of tea or a glass of wine. “Some of the others had been on a boat before so it was a good excuse to let them get on with it.” And although the location was stunning, Tony hasn’t caught the reality TV bug. “I really enjoyed it and I would like to do it again, but without the cameras. It would be nice to take some time to relax with my wife and take in all of the places and sights.” Show starts 7.30pm 12th June 2018 All seats £25, concessions £23. www.forumtheatrebillingham.co.uk

Bark in the Park attracts hundreds of four legged friends All canines great and small went walkies on 15 April to help raise thousands of pounds for charity. From Dobermans to Dachshunds, Poodles to Pugs hundreds of four legged fundraisers and their owners turned out for the third annual St Teresa’s Hospice Bark in The Park event. A record 546 dogs took part in the one mile sponsored walk around South Park, Darlington, helping to raise over £10,000 for the Darlington, South Durham and North Yorkshire charity. St Teresa’s Hospice community fundraising manager Scott Marshall said: “I am absolutely speechless - the number of dogs and their owners here today has exceeded all of our expectations. “People have travelled from all over the north east just to be with us today and the support has been amazing. “This is our third year and the event just keeps on getting bigger and bigger.” The walk, sponsored by Jollyes Pet Superstore and supported by Stanhope Park Veterinary Surgery and Harringtons, was officially started by Darlington Mayor Cllr Jan Taylor. Prizes for best dressed dogs and dog with the waggiest tail were won by Dalmatians Lexi and Arion with their owners Zara, Loraine and Darren Knott, of Darlington, and threeyear- old Cockerpoo Alfie with owner Don Cobb. Additional trophies and rosettes were presented for best young dog handler, best puppy and best dog by hospice supporter Pat Hogg. Winner of best handler was Tyler Head, seven, of Newton Aycliffe with his Shihtzu Claude. RACE FOR LIFE DARLINGTON DARLINGTON women are being urged to join the fight against cancer by entering Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life. treat the disease, helping save more lives. “Taking part in Race for Life is a special and unique experience - full of emotion, courage, tears and laughter. By joining like-minded ladies committed to the cause, women can unite against a disease that affects us all in some way. Whether they plan to pound the pavements or amble to the finish line, every step participants take will help to support crucial research.” The charity is inviting women of all ages, shapes and sizes to take part in Race for Life 5k on Sunday 10 June at South Park, Darlington. There’s no better time to sign up right now at www.raceforlife.org Taking part in Race for Life is a hugely moving experience as people come together to remember loved ones lost to cancer, celebrate the lives of those dear to them who have survived or support those going through treatment. Lauren Robertson, Cancer Research UK’s Darlington Event Manager, said: “We are urging women in Darlington to sign up to Race for Life. “By signing up to Race for Life, women in Darlington can make a real difference in the fight against cancer. Money raised will help Cancer Research UK scientists and doctors find new ways to prevent, diagnose and 18 | Darlington Today
One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy, Half Marathon and Hiking events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer sooner by funding crucial research. Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work relies on the public’s support. Thanks to the generosity of its supporters, the charity was able to spend over £4 million last year in the North East on some of the UK’s leading scientific and clinical research - helping more men, women and children survive the disease.
Lauren added: “Every day, 40 people are diagnosed with cancer in the North East*. That’s why we’re calling on ladies in Darlington to sign up right now and join women from every walk of life at the start line this summer. “Money raised through Race for Life is helping to drive research to help beat over 200 different types of cancer - that’s why every step, every person and every penny raised counts.”

Blood, Sweat and Scones Bronia McGregor caught up with Keith Bell to discuss his new book, Blood, Sweat and Scones, which describes what happens when you make your home a tourist attraction.
Darlington Today | 19
When Keith and Maggie Bell were house-hunting more than 20 years ago for somewhere big enough both to live in and house Keith’s management consultancy business, they fell in love with Crook Hall from the very first viewing. And many visitors over the years have now done the same, thanks to Keith and Maggie making the bold decision to open the manor house to the public, a journey that is documented in Keith’s new book, Blood, Sweat and Scones.
“I’ve reached the age where you start to look back and reflect and I was in the middle of writing a book about my life when my wife suggested writing about Crook Hall,” Keith explained. “I’ve been really impressed with the response, I’ve had people who rarely ever pick up a book tell me that they thoroughly enjoyed it and couldn’t put it down and I can’t ask for better feedback than that.” Two decades after the Bell’s first purchased the property, Crook Hall and Gardens is now one of the Durham’s top visitor attractions, with people coming from far and wide to view the listed building and explore the idyllic gardens surrounding the property.
20 | Darlington Today
“One thing that never fails to surprise us is the generosity of the people who come to visit the hall,” said Keith.
“In our dining room we have a huge mirror which was a donation from someone who visited the hall and a painting that a local artist made and gifted to us. “Another time, we had bought 12 chairs at an auction that we had displayed in the house and a couple visiting from West London offered us two more.” Crook Hall seems to have that effect on people, with many people who visit the property returning time and time again and becoming charmed with the medieval building. “There was one girl who used to come and visit with her mum and then when she got older and went to university, she introduced it to her friends and she actually ended up deciding to have her wedding here as well.
“Opening the hall for events and weddings has been illuminating; we’ve met so many different characters. We feel extremely lucky that people want to come and visit the property and we really do see them as guests in our home.” And it’s not hard to see why Crook Hall and Gardens is so popular, with a maze, stunning views of Durham from the front of the hall and a pastoral setting at the rear with nothing but woodland and greenery. As well as having the regular issues that come with owning a home, in Blood, Sweat and Scones Keith describes some of the uncommon occurrences he has had experienced while living in the medieval manor house. “When Maggie and I were getting ready for a dinner at the hall with someone from the university, our gardener suddenly called me in from the Jacobean room and said “You’ll want to see this.” “A jackdaw had flown down the chimney and brought with it an avalanche of soot which covered the whole room. “It took a few hours to get it clean and wasn’t what I had planned to do but living here, there’s never a boring day.” Crook Hall is a building brimming with history and it would be hard to write about it without mentioning the
stories of the ghostly presences that inhabit the manor.

welcomed.
And although he isn’t personally convinced, Keith has dedicated a whole chapter of the book to the subject for the fans of the paranormal. “We’re currently renovating what will be another holiday apartment for people to come and stay in and one of our workmen refuses to work there alone because of the ghostly happenings that are associated with the house,” explained Keith.

“But I will say that despite a few hiccups at the start, the house has always seemed to lend itself to everything that we have decided to do with it.”

SUMMER OF ENTERTAINMENT Bronia McGregor looks at why there is no need to go any further than our very own region to find an array of events this summer…
The sun is finally starting to make an appearance which can only mean one thing - summer is just around the corner. The warmer months are a fantastic time to be in the North East because the region comes alive with events, ranging from brass bands to street parades to chart-topping performers. An event that encapsulates all three of these things and more is the South Tyneside Festival, with a variety of musical events and family activities happening at venues all over South Shields. One of the highlights of the festival is the annual Summer Parade, which
falls on 30 June this year, where hundreds of youth groups, schools and community organisations will get into the spirit of this year’s theme – monsters, myths and magic. An array of colourful costumes and creative floats will make their way through South Shields’ town centre and end at Bents Park, where visitors will be able to enjoy live music and fun for the whole family. Over the course of the festival there will be a range of musical performances for all tastes, with live music at the Sandhaven Amphitheatre every Thursday and Saturday evening from 2 – 23 June and brass band concerts every Sunday afternoon from June through to August. And the extremely popular Sunday concerts will return to Bents Park throughout July, kicking off with pop princess Pixie Lott, supported by former JLS member, Aston Merrygold on 8 July and X Factor’s The Cutkelvins supporting boyband, The Vamps on 15 July.
22 | Darlington Today
On 22 July pop-rock band Scouting for Girls will take to the stage, supported by Eurovision favourites, The Fizz and 80s star, Roachford and then former M People singer, Heather Small and 90s girl band Atomic Kitten will close the concerts on 29 July.
There is also something for the little ones at the South Tyneside Festival, with the Kids Fun-Fest at the amphitheatre every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 2 – 23 August, featuring games, entertainment and even a gunge tank. And Sunderland will see the Tall Ships Races coming to the city for the very first time this summer, from Wednesday 11 to Saturday 14 July. The magnificent fleet will bring with them four days of street theatre, food and refreshments, displays and live music in an event that is not to be missed. Visitors can expect to enjoy events like a Crew Parade weaving through the city centre on Thursday, bringing a carnival atmosphere to the streets before a prize-giving ceremony and a major artistic commission taking place on the riverside on Friday. Another sight not to be missed is a spectacular Parade of Sail on Saturday, where the ships will move past the coastal resorts of Roker and Seaburn and there will be onshore entertainment continuing well into the evening. And if you don’t mind travelling a little further afield, there are a series of concerts happening in Newcastle
in July, organised by events company Geordie Moor. The three gigs are dubbed The Proms, The Launch Party and The Big Party and take place each evening from Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 July at Nuns Moor, Newcastle under a big top tent. Those attending The Proms on 19 July will be treated to music from a live orchestra – with a bit of a twist. Music fans can enjoy classic dance tracks from the 80s, 90s and 00s performed by the 60 piece Birmingham Gay Symphony Orchestra at the event, as part of glamourous clubbing brand, Miss Moneypenny’s.
performing favourite tracks like Boom Boom Boom Boom and We Like to Party and supporting a superstar pop group that is yet to be announced. And on Saturday night, The Big Party will welcome chart-topper Jessie J to the stage to perform her greatest hits, supported by former Girls Aloud star Nadine Coyle. Tickets for all three of the concerts can be purchased from www.geordiemoor. co.uk/tickets. So wherever your interests lie, there’s something for everyone in the region this summer and no excuse not to make the most of it.
Then the following evening at The Launch Party, euro-pop favourites The Vengaboys will take to the stage,

It’s Old Town – named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980 – colourfully represents every European architectural style you can think of and the result is a bright, vibrant area full of stylish bars and restaurants.
There is so much to enjoy here – from a stroll around the castle walls to a visit to the Uprising Museum, recounting the harrowing story of unbelievable bravery of those who lived in the Warsaw Ghetto during WW2. The city is currently experiencing a huge economic boom and it’s not surprising. Industry and culture operate side by side; the standard of living is high but costs are low what’s not to love? Of course all of that doesn’t necessarily concern tourists but it’s interesting to note the background of the place you’re visiting.
For those who like their food stodgy, filling and in large portions – welcome to food (and drink) heaven. Beer is served in glasses so large you can barely lift them and for carnivores you can enjoy huge portions of meat, sausages and the ubiquitous sauerkraut. For fine dining try Polska Rozana, particularly in the summer where the restaurant is absolutely packed with breathtaking displays of flowers or Pod Gigantami where your feel like you’re dining in a stately home. But it isn’t all about expensive eateries. One of our favourites is Podwale Kompania Piwna, a traditional Polish restaurant tucked away in a back lane with vintage
