local, relevant and entertaining IT’S probably one of the nicest times of the year. It’s the middle of summer, the nights are long, the kids are off school and the weather is, in the main, warm. And as the days of the long summer holiday tick by, there’s a whole host of fun places to go and things to do right here on our doorstep. In this edition we take a look at some of the best places to visit with the family this summer, with a host of ideas for days out, all within a reasonably close drive of Darlington – perfect for those who fancy a trip somewhere but don’t want to spend hours travelling. Whether you’re staying home or jetting abroad to foreign climes, chances are your wardrobe needs a bit of an update. Worry not, for we have picked out the best holiday clothes for all the family on page 13. As August draws to a close, the cooler weather in September will bring, as ever, the world famous Great North Run, and among the runners currently stepping up their exercise regime to tackle the event is Viz creator Simon Donald. We catch up with the stand-up comedian as he explains why he has signed-up to this year’s event in the name of charity, and he also talks more about his own health having recently been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. We also have a chat with Darlington born and bred emerging artist James Gormley, who is now making waves with his distinctive, beach-inspired work. And if that’s not enough to keep you busy, we have another batch of exciting competitions, including overnight stays and a pamper session with Decleor at House of Fraser, Darlington. Enjoy the edition

LOCALNEWS Long-Serving Volunteer Shaves Hair For Hospice A dedicated charity volunteer has become a fund-razor after having her hair shaved off for a local hospice. Jean Hay, of Darlington, took the challenge to raise money for St Teresa’s Hospice, a cause which is close to her heart. Jean has been a regular volunteer for the Hospice, which serves South Durham and North Yorkshire, helping for a number of years in its Skinnergate Home Shop. Recently, Jean was diagnosed with breast cancer and has been undergoing treatment. This meant she had to reluctantly give up her regular shift at the shop, although it hasn’t held her back from lending a helping hand at some of the charity’s fundraising events. Not one to hang around, Jean jumped at the chance to do something for the Hospice.
Jean commented: “I can’t do events like the Midnight Walk or Bark in the Park, but I wanted to give something back. It all happened very quickly – I decided I wanted to do the hair shave on the Monday, and a week later I’d had my hair cut off and had raised nearly £300!” As part of her ongoing treatment Jean is attending the Day Hospice at St Teresa’s, where she benefits from a variety of exercise, activities, and has access to a range of complementary therapies all designed to help manage symptoms. Staff at Winroth’s Hairdressers in Clark’s Yard cut Jean’s hair free of charge. Part-owner Michelle Vickers said: “It was great to be able to support Jean. She has been coming here for years and is an amazing lady who is always smiling.”
Status Quo Drummer Leaves Students Feeling Upbeat Jeff started playing when he was nine, initially using pots and pans, as his parents couldn’t afford a drum kit. “It was all I wanted to do so I practised every day, saved up for a kit and went out and got myself into the music business,” he told students. “It’s all about determination; if you want to do it, just go for it.”
Status Quo drummer Jeff Rich with students from Haughton Academy, l-r, Alex Robinson, 14, Lucas Wood, 13, David Dean, 14 Kieran Raine, 14 and Molly Dermaline, 15.
MUSIC students got “down, down, deeper and down” with a master class in percussion with a legend from rock band, Status Quo. Pupils from Haughton Academy, Darlington, rocked to a new beat after a drumming session with rock and roll musician Jeff Rich. More than 100 Year 8, 9 and 10 students took part in the workshop, which saw them accompany the world famous drummer in a rhythm-based jamming session. Jeff, 63, of Hackney, London, who played drums with Status Quo from 1986 to 2000 and recorded 14 albums with the band, said: “I’ve been to over 7000 schools throughout the UK, delivering my own unique drum workshop, and hopefully inspiring kids along the way to live their dream just like I did.”

Jeff, who has played with rock band Queen, backed singer Elton John and drummed live with bands such as Def Leppard, also gave Darlington pupils a master class in the history of the drum, from its origins as hollowed out tree trunks to modern day synthetic materials. Haughton Academy music teacher Lisa Armstrong said: “We are always looking for ways to engage our students in different aspects of music, especially percussion, so to have a live musician playing in school really helps to inspire both those pupils who are musically-minded and those who may not be natural percussion players.” Following a quick question and answer session with Jeff, young musicians Kieran Raine and Alex Robinson were given the opportunity to play on his own personal drum kit. Grade 4 drummer Alex, 14, of Darlington, who also plays the electric guitar, said: “It was amazing to play on Jeff’s kit. I’d love to be like him and play with a great band when I’m older.”

As well as raising £430 for St Teresa’s Hospice, Jean has made a donation of £50 to a breast cancer support group at Darlington Memorial Hospital. Jane Bradshaw, St Teresa’s Hospice Chief Executive, commented: “Jean is a stalwart Hospice Shop volunteer. She has worked tirelessly to support the Hospice and this latest fundraising effort is typically selfless of her.”

The children are so rewarding and such great fun and it is so lovely to see them settle in here, feel comfortable and start to learn.”
Zulu Dancers Inspire Children With African Performance A VISIT from lion dancers proved a roaring success as pupils enjoyed lessons in culture from out of Africa. Marchbank School, Darlington, played host to The Lions of Zululand, a group of South African musicians, who performed a celebration of tribal songs and dance inspired by traditional Zulu culture. Mduduzi Mkize, founder of The Lions of Zululand, said: “We arrived from South Africa three weeks ago to introduce to schools our traditional Zulu music and dances that have been passed down to us from generation to generation. “Our group are all from different villages in South Africa and bring with them many different styles of singing and dancing as well as blending their own culture and crafts to give students a real feeling of Zululand. “We always get a fantastic reception from the children, many of whom will have never seen a Zulu before. They love joining in with the dancing and singing and are

Darlington College has teamed up with Keepmoat Homes, which is currently developing a housing scheme next door at Central Park, to talk to construction students about the incredible opportunities available globally within an industry hungry for talent. Students, including those learning their joinery and bricklaying trades, were encouraged to join the Keepmoat Homes Academy, with those that did offered a week’s work trial to get a feel of the roles, responsibilities and ethos of the company. Donors were also asked to post a birthday card to St Teresa’s with special messages of support, to be put on display in the hospice, with the bonus of a four-star Trout Hotel overnight stay in the picturesque Lake District town of Cockermouth, up for grabs.
“Kyle’s amazing attendance also reflects in everything he does within school; he is never late, he is always keen and ready to learn, is always prepared for lessons, has represented the academy on numerous occasions and is a real role model for other pupils.” Kyle’s new ambassador role will involve assisting with monitoring class registers, messaging class teachers highlighting good news or areas of concern, producing a leaflet for parents with top tips on how to improve attendance and he will also speak to other children who have improved their attendance or those who may be struggling. Kyle will be moving to Haughton Academy where he hopes to maintain his unbroken 100 per cent attendance record. “I really like school, love maths and seeing all my friends here every day,” said Kyle. “Even if I feel a little bit poorly I still want to come to school so I wouldn’t miss anything and I’m proud to have been made the first attendance ambassador for Springfield Academy.” Kyle’s mum Amy Raw added: “Kyle loves school and is always ready to leave the house on a morning half an hour before he actually needs to. He’s very studious, enjoys his work and just gets on with things. “He especially enjoys getting his 100 per cent attendance certificates at the end of each term and we are all really proud of him.”

MEET THE MAKER: James Gormley
A Darlington artist is seeing his dreams come true after receiving a major commission.
Darlington Today | 15
A former Darlington artist is celebrating after receiving an art commission from the NHS in Cornwall. 37-year-old, James Gormley, who now works as a staff nurse at Royal Cornwall Hospital’s Accident and Emergency department in Truro, started discovering his art during his teenage years in Darlington, where he studied A-level Art at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College.
“When I was around 17 years old, I made a lot of friends at college and the subculture we grew up in which included shared interests in skateboarding, surfing and music helped me to discover my own artistic style,” said James. 16 | Darlington Today
“I’ve always enjoyed art but getting to know a lot of the bands and gig organisers from the North East music scene led me to my first commissions as an amateur artist. “I was regularly tasked with designing the posters and flyers for the band nights held at Darlington Arts Centre and would proudly watch as the finished products were posted around town, given out across college and handed out in local pubs.” Following James’ initial hometown success, he went on to pursue a lifelong dream as a surfer in Cornwall at the age of 18, along with some of the friends he had met at college. Since the move in 1998, James has gone on to develop his artwork; taking inspiration from the Cornish coastline and beaches which he made his home. “Over the past ten years, I’ve really started getting back into my art and a lot of the inspiration has come from my avid love of surfing, meaning many of my pieces are heavily influenced by the beautiful beaches of Cornwall,” he said.
“I’ve continuously developed my style and would now describe my paintings as beach-inspired, bright and colourful – but most importantly, all of my art is created in a bid to put a smile on people’s faces.” And James’ bright and colourful artwork will certainly be helping to put a smile on more people’s faces, as the NHS in Cornwall has commissioned him to create four large pieces for the hospital he works at. “I was commissioned to create four large pieces for the paediatric department, in order to brighten up the space and make it a more welcoming environment for children,” said James. “The last inspection by the Care Quality Commission said that the department looked “too clinical” and wasn’t “child friendly enough”, therefore I was brought in to help change this.
department and nurses and sisters at the hospital are telling me that images of the artwork are being shared and liked across social media, with conversations starting up and people asking for my contact details - so that’s a huge positive.” James has been working on the four commissioned pieces outside of his full-time role as an accident and emergency staff nurse and says that art is a “brilliant way to unwind after a hard day at work”. However, despite loving his current role, James said: “I’d love to pursue a full time career as an artist. “Art is something I love to do and my plans for the future include gaining more exposure, taking on more commissions and developing a strong portfolio.”

TIPTOE THROUGH THE TURKISH TULIPS AND AN AMAZING CLOCKWORK GARDEN BLOSSOM AT THE BOWES MUSEUM THIS SUMMER - 29 Jul – 5 Nov 2017 The Bowes Museum continues its 125th anniversary celebrations with two extraordinary exhibitions this summer for the young and the young-at-heart. Leading contemporary artist Gavin Turk and The House of Fairy Tales, the imaginative children’s arts charity, inspire symbolic stories of horticulture in these captivating shows.
Interwoven amongst The Bowes Museum’s permanent collection, the exhibition delves into the story of tulips as the artists mine the secrets behind this iconic bloom. The exhibition visits The Bowes Museum as part of a grand tour of museums in Europe and the Middle East, recently arriving from Amsterdam – the symbolic home of the tulip. “The exhibition provokes curiosity - challenging us to see things in a new light – and the familiar becomes unfamiliar as the tulip’s important role in history is presented through many different tales,” explained Dr Howard Coutts, the Museum’s Keeper of Ceramics, and curator of the exhibition. Gavin Turk and The House of Fairy Tales were drawn to The Bowes Museum as an important site for this ambitious show due to its historic relationship with the aesthetic arts of Europe and its influences from the East. Explaining why he chose the museum, Gavin Turk said: “I love the fact that Joséphine and John Bowes travelled Europe gathering cultural artefacts, as the traders did with tulip bulbs hundreds of years before.”
Turkish Tulips is an exhibition presenting new works by contemporary artist Gavin Turk, in collaboration with a host of renowned contemporary artists including Damien Hirst, Michael Craig-Martin, Cornelia Parker, Sir Peter Blake, Fiona Banner, Mat Collishaw, Adam Dant and Yinka Shonibare MBE.
The Bowes Museum’s complementary exhibition - The Clockwork Garden – is a bewitching show promising a magical experience for all ages from
The House of Fairy Tales. Flying in from a planet far away, a strange mechanical seed has landed in our main exhibition gallery, wanting to learn Earth’s gardening secrets to take back to its own planet, in this interactive exhibition. Carrying on the theme, in the Museum’s more earthly gardens and grounds there’ll be a chance to probe further into the magical story through A Clockwork Garden Adventure Trail. Both exhibitions open on 29 July, full details can be found at www.thebowesmuseum.org.uk or by calling 01833 690606. The Bowes Museum is open daily from 10am – 5pm. The Bowes Museum is delighted that Darlington Building Society will be our main exhibition partner in this summer’s programme featuring Turkish Tulips and The Clockwork Garden.

THE RUNNING MAN VIZ co-founder and stand-up comedian Simon Donald is to tackle the Great North Run in support of a charity which helps vulnerable youngsters across the North East – and he’s calling on others to do the same, as Emma Walker reports…
AS runners across the region pound the pavements in preparation for this year’s Great North Run, up in the hills of Italy, Simon Donald is, too. Simon, who recently revealed he has multiple sclerosis, will line up for the world’s biggest half marathon on Sunday 10 September to raise cash for the Graham Wylie Foundation’s Rock n Raise campaign. And he is hoping to encourage potential runners to join him in taking part in this year’s event to support children in the region. Rock n Raise was launched last year as part of the newly-formed Graham Wylie Foundation, which is raising funds through music events to support the creation of a music therapy centre at the former matron’s lodge at Newcastle’s Fleming Hospital. When complete the centre will use music therapy to help children and young people from across the region. And the North East comedian’s determination is even more remarkable as he is battling health issues of his own, “I guess it’s not widely known that I have a number of health challenges myself; MS, arthritis, asthma and a rare blood condition called ITP,” said Simon,
brother Chris in 1979.
“until my local pool in Heaton was demolished.
“I’m also patron of Dyslexia North East, so there were many, many causes I could have chosen to run for in this, my first Great North Run.”
“I still swim but not as often as I did. I play football when I can, I’m pleased that I’ve been able to keep playing despite my age.
To help with his training Simon’s using the GNR smartphone app and he said. “I’m used to using the Nike training app so it’s not entirely unfamiliar territory - the difference is that the GNR one is building up to an event and schedules me specific runs all the way up to 10 September.
“I also cycle when I can but running is only something I’ve done from time to time and this will be my first half marathon.
who founded the cult adult comic with
“I’m based in Italy as I met my partner here and our children are in Italian schools,” he added. “And, I say it’s a smart app, but it doesn’t seem smart enough to know how hot it is or how steep the hills are. I can’t complain, though. I know I’m lucky spending so much time here and I’m actually enjoying the training. “I’ve always liked to keep fit but with my health conditions it’s even more important to keep on top of it: the fitter I am the better I can cope with whatever life throws at me.” Running is just one of a number of activities Simon enjoys and “I was a very keen swimmer as a boy,” he said,
“I did a few 10k Children’s Cancer Runs over 20 years ago but I’ve never run this far. I’m really looking forward to it and I hope to raise as much as I can for the Foundation – that really would make it all worthwhile.” Places are still available for people who are keen to tackle this year’s Great North Run. ARUBA BY BERNICE SALTZER LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT CARIBBEAN ISLAND? BERNICE SALTZER DISCOVERS THE NEXT BIG THING…. Looking out at powder white sand, watching palm trees swaying in the lightest of breezes while an azure sea lapped around our toes – it’s hard to believe that you’re not actually in paradise.
A firm favourite with USA holidaymakers – not surprisingly as it’s so easily accessible – it is now being flagged up by major travel operators in this country who are offering all-inclusive packages.
It was the thought that drifted through my brain on more than one occasion during a 10 day long stay at one of my bucket list destinations, the stunning Caribbean island of Aruba.
We preferred to do it ourselves, which gave us the flexibility of a 48 hour stopover in New York before heading off to this sun drenched island.
While Barbados, Jamaica, Dominican Republic and the like have been hot – in more ways than one – tourist spots for decades, Aruba has pretty much passed the UK travelling public by. 28 | Darlington Today
Aruba is part of the Dutch Antilles, one of three islands which also include Bonaire and Curacao. The Dutch influence is everywhere - from the ornate architecture to the names of the various towns.
But what it also offers is a safe, charming island with fabulous restaurants, great hotels and the perfect location to chill out. This is not a place for those in search of history and culture but it is a fabulous option for those who want to eat their own body weight in fresh seafood and also want to try their luck at the many casinos that inhabit the island. The lack of formality is also very appealing – restaurants encourage casual wear regardless of whether you’re dining in a top eatery or in one of the makeshift offerings on the beach.
The food is definitely part of the Aruba experience. We dined everywhere from the very popular but oddly named Wacky Wahoo (named after a local fish), where the menu varies from day to day depending on what the fishermen have caught, to the elegant Quinta del Carmen, based in a historic house.
a hit, but hopefully travellers will still venture beyond the confines of their holiday hotel.
Be prepared to pay however, this is not a cheap island which is probably why all-inclusive options are proving
All the big name hotels are here – Marriott, Hilton etc – and also enjoy the unexpected pleasures of watching
Buy yourself a day pass to the Radisson hotel and get access to the world famous flamingo beach or simply lie on perfect sand and watch the world go by.
the local wildlife (giant chameleons) chase each other around the pool. There is so much joy to be had in Aruba in so many different ways – add it to your list!
