LOCALNEWS NEW HEADTEACHER TAKES THE REINS A WELL-RESPECTED head teacher, who has covered the education spectrum from early years to undergraduates, has undertaken her latest challenge. Tessa Fenoughty, former head teacher at Butterknowle Primary School, has taken up a new position as principal of Marchbank Free School, Darlington.

Fenoughty, originally from Birmingham, has taken on a number of different roles throughout her life, ranging from a map research officer at the Ministry of Defence producing escape and evacuation material for ex-patriots in Tripoli during the 1980s Libyan crisis – to a lecturer in science education at Warwick University.

Part of the Education Village Academies Trust, the school specialises in helping primary children with a range of emotional, social and mental health conditions, from emotional and attachment issues to attention deficit hyperactivity difficulties and autism.

“Throughout my career I have taught within every sector of education, from pre-school to university degree level, but this is the first time I have been a part of a special educational needs school,” said Ms Fenoughty.

New principal of Marchbank Free School Tessa Fenoughty

“I am hoping the role will continue to stretch, challenge and engage me every day to come up with solutions to meet the needs of pupils, staff, parents and carers.”

TOP CHEF HELPS STUDENTS PREPARE FOR PRESTIGIOUS BANQUET THE next generation of young chefs will get a taste of their culinary futures, when they hold a prestigious banquet to raise money for charity. Catering students from Darlington, Middlesbrough and Newcastle Colleges will host an exclusive event for 200 guests at Gisborough Hall, Guisborough, on 21 March. Organised by Middlesbrough College curriculum team leader and chair of the Professional Association of Catering Educators Molly Shaher, with the support of The Royal Academy of Culinary Arts, the event will raise funds for the AdoptA-School Programme – helping to generate investments to education outside mainstream funding. The initiative has the support of Michelin star mentor Frances Atkins, of The Yorke

Arms, while the front of house element will be run by Molly and Nick Shottel of Hospitality 21. And Darlington College has been working with Jonathan Harrison, the chef patron of the celebrated Sandpiper restaurant in Leyburn to create the main course. During a recent workshop at Darlington College Mr Harrison helped students develop and prepare a scallop and apple tartare amuse-bouche and a sustainable deep water cod fish dish, which also included clams, squid and mussels, served with an onion bhaji.

“I feel passionately about the need to pass on our skills as chefs and I’m delighted to be taking part in this initiative.

Tickets for the banquet can be obtained from Middlesbrough College Waterside Brassiere, by calling 01642 333271.

“This is so important to the rejuvenation of catering and getting people excited about the food they are eating,” said Mr Harrison.

PUPILS CELEBRATE OFSTED SUCCESS WITH A BURMESE PYTHON PUPILS enjoyed a visit from a whole host of weird and wonderful creatures to mark a successful academic rating. Snakes, spiders, hairless guinea-pigs and bearded dragons brought dread and delight to staff and pupils at Beaumont Hill Academy, part of the Education Village Academy Trust, Darlington, as they celebrated their latest Ofsted report with a hands-on learning experience. During the day, which took pupils off the traditional timetable, students studied dinosaurs with Stockton creative education company Apollo, which ran a variety of sessions including a drum workshop, creative crafts, music, drama and stop-frame animation. 4 | Darlington Today

Staff from the Life Centre, Newcastle, also worked with children on the human digestive system with a close look at burps, bottoms and bile. Ofsted inspectors recently hailed the special school ‘good’ and highlighted the value of immersive study at the school, which teaches 300 children with complex needs, from the ages of two to 19. Principal Caroline Green said: “There was an incredible buzz throughout the school all day and our children benefitted massively as it stimulated their learning and boosted their communications skills and self-confidence.”

NEW TIDE COMES INTO TEES VALLEY CHARITY A Tees Valley charity dedicated to offering young people valuable career experiences has welcomed a new wave of appointments.

SIX DECADES OF HITS

High Tide Foundation, founded in 2012 by businesses across Tees Valley, has grown considerably over the last six years and the charity has appointed a new chairman and a trustee, to continue its success.

Bronia McGregor catches up with John McNally of The Searchers, to discuss the band’s final tour…

Founding Chairman, David Robinson has stepped down to take up the position of patron, passing the baton to highlyregarded local businessman and founder of Better, Mark Easby.

62 years since they first started out and countless hits later, The Searchers are somewhat reluctantly calling it a day, embarking on a farewell tour to perform their much-loved tracks for their dedicated fans one last time.

The charity also welcomes Kirsten Donkin as trustee, responsible for marketing and communications.

Heading to more than 50 venues over three months, one date they are particularly looking forward to is their Darlington show, being big fans of the region.

Involved with the charity since it began and well-known for her long-standing role with PD Ports, Kirsten is keen to drive the High Tide message forward to grow the charity’s identity and continue developing its work. Having worked with over 8,000 students, the charity now offers cadetships and work experience placements further afield than the thriving Teesside shipping industry, including finance, law and creative media.

DOUBLE PETPALS CELEBRATION AS PAIR CELEBRATE THEIR 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARIES

For more information about High Tide Foundation, see www.hightidefoundation.co.uk

Now in their sixth decade of touring, John admits that it’s difficult to imagine his life turning out any other way. “It was always going to be music,” he admits. “Brian Epstein really opened the door for the Merseyside groups. We recorded a demo, just messing around, and then Pye decided they wanted to record some songs with us and they liked the sound so they signed us and the rest is history.” And while the band has toured more than many other groups, performing upwards of 150 shows per year, John insists that playing still has the same rush as it did all those years ago.

Jayne Gibson celebrates 10 years with Petpals

Local pet care company, Petpals Darlington and Yarm has recently celebrated milestone anniversaries with two of its staff.

Jayne, who was previously a hairdresser, now

The family-run business, founded by Sallyann Gray in 2007, employs 13 staff from their Darlington-based office, caring for approximately 300 dogs and more than 100 cats and 20 small animals a month.

week, plus walking dogs every day.

And loyal staff Jayne Gibson and Vicky Metcalfe have both recently hit a decade of caring for the region’s pets while their owners are at work, on holiday or just need an extra pair of hands.

“We’re really looking forward to coming to Darlington, we used to spend weeks in the North East when we performed at events like the Stockton Fiesta and it’s one of the best places for playing for us. The North East has amazing audiences, absolutely superb,” said John.

For more information visit www.petpals.com/area/darlingtoneast, email darlingtoneast@petpals.com

“It feels like yesterday we were just starting. We’re all just going to enjoy the farewell tour; it’ll be a lot of fun and I still hope that things might change and we’ll be playing music again in the future.” Until then, The Searchers will be enjoying a well-deserved retirement and while many in their shoes would be looking forward to relaxing, John hasn’t planned too far ahead. “I don’t really know what I’m going to do. I had a stroke last year so I’ll take some time to recover from that and then I’ll back playing five aside football. “There are a group of guys I play with who all have different jobs and it’s refreshing getting a different outlook on life. “And of course, they all love to make fun of the showbiz side of my life!” The Searchers are at Darlington Hippodrome on 21 March. A HOME AWAY FROM HOME 2019 is the year of the staycation and you don’t have to travel far to find a great destination, with everything you need for a long or short stay. Thorpe Farm, at Barnard Castle, is a picturesque escape for the whole family, with camping and caravan facilities and static homes, ideal if you’re looking to buy your own holiday home, planning a week away on the search for a fantastic day out. Surrounded by idyllic farmlands, it’s almost hard to believe that the park is only an hour from York, Harrogate and Newcastle, making it a great location to get all the benefits of being close to nature, while also being close enough to nearby cities for a day trip shopping. And with the coast and the Lake District also just an hour’s drive away, 14 | Darlington Today

the centre is a perfect place to set up base to delve even further into the region’s natural landscapes. However, chances are that once you’ve set up at Thorpe Farm, you might find yourself not wanting to leave as there is plenty to do on site, from making the most of the natural surroundings to browsing everything on offer at the farm shop, including own-brand jams, biscuits and much more. With 20 acres of woodland planted in the last 10 years, you don’t have to walk far to feel completely engrossed in nature, and you might even spot some of the many animals who have made the area their home. And anyone looking to get up close and personal with the wildlife can

head to Wetheriggs Animal Rescue on site. The centre regularly takes in unwanted or injured pets, farm animals and wildlife and opens the Rescue every day for members of the public to come and visit. It’s a perfect activity for families, with regular animal handling sessions so children can get up close to rabbits, guinea pigs, chicks, snakes, rodents, lizards and many more. Or, if you’re looking to keep active during your stay, head to the Country Park and follow one of the many popular walking and cycling routes, or explore the Wetland Nature Reserve which is also home to a vast array of birds and animals – so don’t forget your binoculars.

And after a long day tiring yourself out in the natural world, the centre’s Courtyard restaurant provides the perfect spot to recharge. The newly refurbished eatery mixes original features with contemporary furniture to create a modern yet welcoming space, with a brand new menu featuring hearty meals and a selection of indulgent sweet treats. All meals are prepared fresh every day in the farmhouse kitchen,

STAY WITH A SENSE OF HISTORY… It’s hardly surprising that a visit to Durham is going to involve a brush with history.

The combination of the cobbled streets, the iconic castle and the towering structure that is Durham Cathedral ensures that even the most casual visitor can get a sense of time gone by. For anyone who is staying in the city for any length of time – from visiting academics to business people – a luxury home from home is a very appealing option for anyone who is planning an extended stay or is relocating to the area. And that’s exactly what’s on offer following on the transformation of a centuries old building. It’s hard to miss 52 Old Elvet, a few minutes’ walk from the city centre and with roots which can be traced back to the 1700s. A grade II listed building, it was the former home of the Durham County Club where it hosted politicians and dignitaries, once even welcoming HM The Queen who dined there. That might well have been the end of its story once the club vacated the building, if it hadn’t been taken over, heavily invested in and transformed to 12 luxury apartments. The refurbishment is the perfect combination of high end living while retaining many of the building’s original features – think high ceilings, authentic wooden staircases, fireplaces and ceiling roses. There’s even an old cooking range which has been transformed into a feature in one particular apartment. Yet among these nods to times gone by, there is a real sense of the stylish, chic and contemporary – the perfect combination for long term stays with the wow factor.

The apartments are now under the control of the recently formed Durham Boutique Lettings, which is renting out the luxury apartments as executive corporate lets. Each one is named after one of the Prince Bishops which were such a vital part in the creation of Durham in the past and each has its very own features that make it something extra special. There are one and two bedroom apartments all fully equipped with elegant kitchens, dining areas and comfortable lounges, many of which have stunning views.

It’s city living at its best – a bespoke place where guests can relax, have a base from which to tour or while they are doing business near-by. And of course it also makes a cosy setting for informal gatherings, fireside chats or for strategy events. The apartments also offer a high end concierge service which can cater for everyone’s needs – from deals and offers for local restaurants and leisure activities to providing life’s essentials if guests are too busy to shop. All the comforts of home in the heart of one of the North East’s most fabulous cities – who could want anything more? Further information is available at www.durhamboutique.com

COMPETITION To win an overnight stay at 52 Old Elvet, subject to availability, simply answer the following question:

How many apartments are in the building? Closing date for entries is 22nd March 2019. See page 26 for details of how to enter.

St Teresa’s Hospice house clearance manager Paul Wheatley

House clearance service offered by St Teresa’s Hospice St Teresa’s Hospice is helping families who have suffered a bereavement, or those in need of help with years of accumulated storage, with a house clearance service that is also raising valuable funds. The Hospice, which provides free care and support to residents of South Durham and North Yorkshire, launched a house clearance service to help solicitors handling probate cases and individuals both locally and living abroad.

clearance manager Paul Wheatley. “We have the skills to tackle any job and a keen eye to spot items that can help us to raise much-needed money for our free hospice services.”

The house clearance service is also proving popular with families, some of who live as far away as Canada and Australia, who for whatever reason have properties to clear.

“We’re providing a very sensitive and bespoke service. Many local solicitors also use the scheme as they are supporting probate cases.”

“Any house clearance can be daunting, and sorting loved ones’ houses can be very emotional,” said St Teresa’s Hospice house

“We do our very best to get the highest value from these kind donations” Paul said. “Any clothing that cannot be salvaged brings in

extra money through recycling and a lot of the furniture is restored by our staff and volunteer team, to provide the hospice’s St T’s shops with attractive stock.” Assessments are free, trained staff and volunteers can tackle any job and the donations made are essential for the Hospice to continue its vital work. Anyone interested in the house clearance service can contact Paul at sales@darlingtonhospice.org.uk or phone (01325) 488701.

WELCOME TO NORTH SHIRE “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit,” wrote JRR Tolkien. But, as Emma Walker discovered, some hobbits live in a little more luxury…

In a magical land, far, far, away – well, about 12 miles north west of Whitby – lies the mythical village of North Shire; a land of dragons, hobbits and, for a couple of days in late November, five pals with a combined age greater than Gandalph’s. We meet up every year for a mini-break and our destination has to be two things; reasonably priced and a little bit unusual. We’ve done canal boats, we’ve done yurts but, when a Google search revealed a hobbit-style house on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors, we struck gold. With little idea what to expect, we set off from our various parts of the country for North Shire, a family-run farm, just outside Liverton, just as Storm Diana was tearing up trees and testing the windscreen wipers to their limits. Dusk was falling when, through the lashing rain, a bright pink glow appeared 28 | Darlington Today

on the horizon – colour changing lights illuminating the most gloriously intricate iron gates: the entrance to North Shire.

With an entourage of clucking hens

Fairy lights in the trees revealed an assortment of shepherds’ huts and, because “it does not do to leave a dragon out of your calculations,” the Green Dragon café, where we collected the keys to our hobbit house.

garden to a charming little building, cut

and a vocal black cat we made our way, windswept and soaked to the skin, through a picket fenced, lantern lit into a hill. And as we pushed open the large, round front door of Potts Corner, the warmth nearly knocked us flat.

Here, owner, Tim, plied us with superb cocktails and told us what we might have seen had we visited in better weather. It turns out this quiet little area – falling between Cleveland and North Yorkshire - has rather a lot to be proud of. It was the burial place of a Saxon princess, whose treasures, found alongside her, are literally priceless. It has the highest cliffs on the east coast – along with some superb walks – and a strong history and future of potash mining. It also has some of the friendliest people any of us had met in a long while. From Kim and Shannon at North Shire, who brought us a huge slab of chocolate cake from the Green Dragon café, as a welcome gift, to Tim, Ian at The Water Wheel and the delivery fellow from the Loftus takeaway who kindly delivered our order to Mad Alice’s so we didn’t have to set foot outside.

With its stone flagged floor, a large wooden table surrounded by sofas and a portrait of Bilbo Baggins over the mantlepiece, this was the show home of hobbit houses. To either side of the sitting room were two bedrooms, with handmade mattresses on the bunk beds, while a bathroom housed a rather lovely slipper bath and – huge relief – plenty of scalding hot water. That night despite the storm outside we slept like tops, warm and sheltered, and in fact we rarely ventured out during

daylight hours – except for a brief trip to Whitby, from which we returned utterly soaked. Thankfully, hobbits like television and so we curled up on the sofas and watched a festive Miss Marple and played board games, heading outside (like hibernating hobbits) only in search of food. The first evening was spent at the Water Wheel Inn at Liverton, whose water wheel, it turns out, is purely decorative – there isn’t a stream for miles - but where the gammon and chips were excellent. Feeling that the small kitchen area in the hobbit house probably wasn’t created with the feeding of five hungry adults in mind, we set off on the second evening in search of somewhere else to eat. And that’s how we ended up in Loftus … and Mad Alice’s Micro Bar – a small but perfectly formed, fairy-lit bar with around 70 types of gin, not to mention a large number of locally brewed ales and craft beers.

The next morning, as we prepared to leave, there was one final surprise – we opened the door of Potts Corner to find the storm had passed. The sun was shining and, for the first time since we arrived, we could see just what a stunning location this really was – with views across the moors stretching as far as the eye could see. Few venues are as magical in the depths of winter as they are at the height of summer, but this really was. It was charming, comfortable and the perfect place in which to spend time with friends. “If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold,” wrote Tolkien, “it would be a merrier world.”

I couldn’t agree more.
