LOCALNEWS DIPLOMA LEADS TO NURSING OFFERS A DARLINGTON student is one step closer to achieving her dream job, with help from a North East college. 23-year-old Aislyn Hay currently works as a recruitment consultant, but had always hoped to become a nurse. Now, thanks to enrolling at Middlesborough College to study the new Access to Higher Education Diploma in Health Distance Learning – a flexible programme that is taught online – Aislyn has been offered places at two local universities to study for a degree in Adult Nursing.

Aislyn said “I was worried at first about the support I would receive from college as the course is taught 100% online; however, the support from both tutors along with the 24-hour accessible material available on Canvass is invaluable. “I have a full time job and the course fits around my work commitments as I can study from home and in my own time. “I would encourage anyone who wants to change career or study for a degree to consider the distance learning Access to Health course as it is so flexible.”

We’re working to create more programmes, increase our reach and have a positive impact on as many young people as possible.” For more information about High Tide Foundation, see www.hightidefoundation.co.uk.

SCHOOL HOSTS MAJOR DANCE CONTEST YOUNG PERFORMERS had the chance to showcase their talents at an annual dance competition. The PULSE Tees Valley Sub Regional Platform Secondary Plus Performance, was hosted by dance students at Haughton Academy, part of The Education Village Academy Trust, Darlington. Nine teams from Darlington and Teesside took part in the competition, part of a national partnership with U.Dance and Dance City, which supports and encourages dance performance opportunities for young people across the country. Organiser Debbie Harbin, of The D Project, Darlington, said: “PULSE is a collaborative event for secondary schools and community groups across the region. “It gives young dancers the opportunity to take part in dance workshops, to perform in front of a live audience, be inspired by other dance groups and to find out more about pathways into dance within their local area.”

Workshops in contemporary and commercial dance were led by Chloe Shutt, of The D Project, and internationally acclaimed Balletboyz dance artist Blaine Richardson.

Dancers were then invited to perform for fun, or opt to take part in the competition, with the first two placed groups chosen

Finalists of the regional events will then be offered the opportunity to perform at the U.Dance national final in London.

PUPILS GIVEN A TASTE OF COLLEGE LIFE PRIMARY school pupils have been experiencing learning opportunities on their doorstep, with a trip to a state-of-theart college. Year 5 children from Mowden Junior School were invited for a taste of student life at Darlington College, as part of a new initiative. Around 90 pupils were given a guided tour of the college’s facilities, which teaches construction, media, hairdressing and beauty, sport and uniformed services, hospitality and catering. And they have been invited to return for a taster day to gain a real insight into life as a student at one of the country’s leading further education colleges. Head teacher Peter King said: “This has been an invaluable exercise in showing our pupils just what is available for them in their own town.

Pupils from Mowden Junior School enjoy a visit to Darlington College

“It has been a fabulous experience for them and they can’t wait to come back for a taster day.” Darlington College marketing and engagement manager Claire Turner added: “Learning is a seamless journey for young people and it is never too soon to introduce pupils to the idea of further education and the workplace.

“It was also a useful session in breaking down the career stereotypes that often exist in society and I was delighted that many of the girls were interested in joining taster sessions in construction, including bricklaying, plumbing and carpentry, and engineering.” For more information on opportunities at Darlington College visit www.darlington. ac.uk. Turning waste into woofs Darlington based company Harrison Group have come up with an ingenious way to repurpose waste material that is making dogs bark with delight. Dog toys made from waste flag and printed material are proving a huge hit with canines big and small.

the fabric they print is recycled

Every year the company prints and sews thousands of metres of branded scrim for events such as the London Marathon, as well as fabric display stands for exhibitions and flags for homes, businesses and landmarks across the UK. In the past, once it had been used this fabric would have been part of the 895,000 tonnes of textile waste that enters landfill each year. With the aim that 100% of

or upcycled, Harrison Group recently launched a fabric upcycling scheme. The scheme used printed products and their waste material being turned into useful items such as shopping bags and dog toys by their inhouse skilled seamstresses. The doy toys have proved a big hit so far. The intricate plait of toxic free material stands up to even the most destructive dogs. One happy owner, Dawn, said

“My Otis absolutely loves his toy and I do too. Normally he rips toys apart within minutes but this one has stood up to his boisterous nature. It’s great that it is made from waste material. I feel like I am doing my bit for the environment too.” The toys will also be donated to local dog rehoming centres throughout the year as part of the company’s CSR policy. The fabric upcycling scheme forms part of a larger commitment to sustainability by the Group which consists of Harrison Flagpoles, the only

UK manufacturer of flagpoles, Harrison EDS who specialise in quality marketing displays and Harrison Creative, the event branding experts. They pride themselves on considering the full environmental impact of the products they sell and aim to reduce, reuse, repair, repurpose and recycle whenever possible. They have worked hard to develop and source a range of environmentally friendly products including

EnviroflagTM, a flag material made from recycled plastic bottles, fabric displays stands made from recycled materials that can be reused and then recycled at the end of their life and environmentally friendly alternatives for temporary signage and event branding. Commercial and Operations Director Simon Lunt commented: “We have a strong heritage as skilled manufacturers and aim to constantly challenge ourselves to improve. The need to live and operate more ethically and environmentally

friendly is becoming more and more important. I believe green initiatives should form part of every company’s strategy and I am very pleased that Harrison Group are at the forefront of the Green movement” Learn more about Harrison Group’s sustainability promise at www.weareharrisons.com and visit Harrison Flagpoles at www.flagpoles.co.uk to see their range of environmentally sustainable EnviroflagTM products.

PARTY THE NIGHT AWAY AT THE

LOBSTER BALL The popular charity ball is back and Bronia McGregor finds out what diners can expect at this year’s event. There’s never been a better excuse to dust off your dancing shoes, because the annual Lobster Ball is just around the corner. A glittering evening of entertainment, mouth-watering food and classic hits are all on offer at the event, which takes place at Hardwick Hall Hotel, Sedgefield on Friday 17 May. And it’s a celebration of British music stars this year, with The Bootleg Beatles playing The Beatles’ greatest hits and Rob Lamberti recreating George Michael’s iconic sound. Having performed as the group for almost four decades at venues all over the world, headline act The Bootleg Beatles have cemented themselves as the number one tribute to the fab four. Then, any fans of the late great George Michael can enjoy both his solo and Wham! hits sung by Rob Lamberti, who has both an impressive physical and vocal likeness to the star. Diners can also enjoy music from singer Diane Shaw, who will perform a range of Motown classics when she takes to the stage. Steve Walls returns to compere the black tie event – which raises money for charity Daisy Chain to support families affect by autism – and it will also include a fashion show from Durham-based menswear brand Woven. And it wouldn’t be the Lobster Ball without an impressive selection of dishes from the award-winning chefs at the Rib Room Steakhouse and Grill, 18 | Darlington Today

serving up a four-course lobster surf and turf menu. Guests can also make the most of the Taittinger Champagne bar and enjoy complimentary wine, lager and beer all night. John Adamson, owner of Ramside Estates which owns Hardwick Hall Hotel, is confident this year’s event pulls out all the stops. “We are always looking for ways to make each Lobster Ball bigger and better than the last and we have some fantastic entertainment lined up at this year’s event,” said John. “The Bootleg Beatles, Rob Lamberti and Diane Shaw are certain to create a real party atmosphere and put on an amazing show that music fans won’t want to miss. “With delicious food, incredible live music and a disco until late, it’s certain to be a night to remember – all in aid of a very important cause.”

Tickets cost £145pp plus VAT. For more information, visit www.hardwicklobsterfestival.co.uk or to book, email events@hardwickhallhotel.co.uk or

Viva España…. It doesn’t matter where across the globe she travels, the Costa Del Sol has a special place in Bernice Saltzer’s heart … Long before the stars of TOWIE were eschewing bread, rice and potatoes in their “no carbs before Marbs” lament, there were others of us who were well aware of the delights of this particular Spanish costa. Marbella – and the surrounding towns and villages – have so much to offer for simply everyone. Want to get on your gladrags and be one of the beautiful people? Head to Puerto Banus. Want to have some family fun with English style food and favourite pubs? Hit Fuengirola or Benalmedena. 28 | Darlington Today

Of course if you’re staying for a longer visit hire a car – it’s a relatively short drive to Gibraltar or to see the magnificent Alhambra site.
