Author Patrick Townsend launches his debut novel, To Ride With the 7th, with a film trailer created by Darlington College media students, L-R, Richard Alsop, 20, of Darlington, Kaidyn Wilkinson, 20, of Darlington, Reece Goodham, 20, of Richmond and Ben Fox, 18, of Darlington

HISTORICAL NOVEL BROUGHT TO LIFE BY DARLINGTON STUDENTS THE historical account of a northern soldier’s fate at the Battle of Little Bighorn has been brought to life by budding young film makers. Media students at Darlington College have produced a two minute trailer for the book ‘To Ride with the 7th’ after being approached by local author and historian Patrick Townsend. Richard Alsop, Kaidyn Wilkinson, Reece Goodham and Ben Fox, filmed, produced and edited the story of Timothy Donnelly, a Darlington-born soldier who was killed alongside General Custer at the Battle of Little Bighorn on June 25, 1876. The debut novel by Patrick Townsend traces the journey of 19-year-old Timothy Donnelly who emigrated from Tubwell Row, Darlington, to the New World with his family in search of

adventure, romance, fast horses and chasing the American Indian. Using 60 actors from the Lonestar Old West Re-enactment Group, horses, chickens and a pig, the students spent two days filming scenes from the book, including an epic battle re-enactment, in Leyburn, North Yorkshire. Sound engineer Kaidyn Wilkinson, 20, of Darlington said: “We took Patrick’s vision and turned it into a fantastic trailer which really sets the scene for the book.

launch of the book to coincide with the 143rd anniversary of the battle.

WHEN IN DOUBT, PEDAL IT OUT Women across the Tees Valley are invited to get on their bikes this summer as part of a new campaign from local transport project Let’s Go Tees Valley. The two-month campaign, entitled ‘Let’s Go Ladies’, started in July and aims to get more women to try travelling by bike, instead of by car, for some of their local journeys. It will offer free training, bike rides, maps and other practical advice to make cycling easier and more fun to do.

more Tees Valley women see riding a bicycle for what it is: an easy, fun and healthy means of transport.” As part of the campaign, women are encouraged to contact their local active travel hub to get hold of cycling maps and sign-up for the free guided rides and confidence booster sessions, as well as the basic bike maintenance courses.

“Many adults, particularly women, lack confidence when it comes to riding a bike and this is something that we want to change.” says Erica Malkin, Let’s Go Tees Valley marketing and communications officer.

Supporting the initiative, Cllr Heather Scott, Tees Valley Combined Authority’s Cabinet Lead on Transport said: “There are lots of reasons for women to get cycling, from health benefits to helping the environment. What better time to take it up than summer, and with lots of support thanks to this fantastic scheme.

5 STARS FOR ORCHARD CARE HOMES Orchard Care Homes, one of the UK’s leading providers of specialist residential, dementia, nursing and short-term respite care, is celebrating after achieving an outstanding 5-star food hygiene rating across all 39 of its care homes. The FSA (Food Standards Agency) 5-star rating is awarded to businesses after consideration of three key criteria - how hygienically the food is handled, the physical condition of the business and how the business manages ways of keeping food safe. Specific areas analysed included cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and pest control; as well as looking at processes, training and systems to ensure good hygiene is maintained. The 5-star food hygiene rating is the highest accolade achievable and reflects the attention to

STUDENTS GIVEN A TASTE OF ORGANIC FARMING GREEN thinking pupils have been given a taste of organic farming by the cream of the region’s dairies. Pupils from Kings Priory School were given the full tour of Acorn Dairy, Archdeacon Newton, near Darlington, by directors Caroline Bell and Graham Tweddle. Head of school catering Jackie Jessup and teacher Vicky Youll were joined by nine Year 9 students who are studying GCSE food preparation and nutrition and seeking the Soil Association’s silver Food for Life Catering Award.

Mrs Jessup said: “As a society we have moved away from natural and it is time we were moving back. It is really important to me that the milk we use is organic. I think of the children at Kings Priory school as my own and they should have the best food we can possibly give them.”

Kings Priory School pupils visit Acorn Dairy

As well as meeting a herd of shorthorn cows and their calves, the Tynemouth pupils were shown the processing and bottling plant and how the farm uses manure to fertilise the soil naturally.

Acorn Dairy decided to convert to organic 20 years ago and has built up a loyal following of 4,000 doorstep customers, schools, cafes, restaurants and supermarkets right across the North-East and North Yorkshire.

They were also given the chance to make butter from Acorn cream and enjoyed hot chocolate made with the farm’s organic milk.

Research has shown organic milk to be much richer in antioxidants, healthy fatty acids and Omega 3 as a result of the herd feeding on grass and clover.

Acorn’s herd offers a natural rate of milk production which is less intensive allowing the cows to live longer, happier and healthier lives. Mrs Bell said: “We are always delighted to show young people around our dairy and are thrilled when they show such a keen interest in organic farming and animal welfare. The future is theirs and they have it in their hands to mobilise further change.”

Twenty Tiny Tales - Elaine J. Bradley Darlington author Elaine J. Bradley publishes her debut book Twenty Tiny Tales, an eclectic collection of short stories! Elaine J. Bradley qualified as a Primary School Teacher and then spent 28 years as a Civil Servant. She then decided to pursue her lifetime desire of working with dogs, and ran her ‘Canine Carers’ business for ten years before retiring. Twenty Tiny Tales is her debut book, a collection of twenty-two moralistic, humorous and heart-warming short stories. Some are inspired by the freedom and music of the 1960s, others are tales about wildlife, birds, dogs, caravans– even motorcycles. Let the stories transport you to the rural settings of the West Coast of Scotland and Northumberland. ‘Flower Power’ has all of the charm of the Sixties– a time of pacifism, love and euphoria, and follows the story of Clara and her florist business. ‘The Museum of Childhood’ follows Sadie, a twenty-two year old graduate who

secured a temporary post at The Museum of Childhood, an old four storey building full of childhood related memorabilia, with a ghostly secret. “Every one of my tales is fiction, created out of my own head, but often sparked by either a scene I came across on my travels or a small incident encountered, which I turned into something more dramatic. When running my business, ‘Canine Carers’, my writing extended greatly and I wanted to publish a book about my way of life at the time and featuring all of my clients– the dogs. I’m currently writing my ‘Canine Carers’ book,” Elaine comments.

Twenty Tiny Tales is published by Matador and is available from all good bookshops and online. Price: £9.99. ISBN 9781838590345.

LIFE’S A

BRAGG Bronia McGregor caught up with Billy Bragg ahead of his performance at Hardwick Live this summer.

35 years since releasing his first record, Life’s a Riot with Spy Vs Spy, Billy Bragg has produced 13 studio albums, eight compilations, two boxsets and toured across numerous countries. “I always wanted to go into music”, he admitted. “When I was 19 years old, something happened and that was that I discovered punk rock. I cut off my hair, gave away my flared trousers and gave all my Eagles records to my friend who worked in the post office.” After famously bribing BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel with a hand delivered mushroom biriyani to get him to play one of his tracks, his first album charted at number 30 and the rest, as they say, is history.

sits in their hotel and goes on the internet.”

what will be on the set list until the day itself.

Not content with just conquering the music scene, the singer has taken to writing books, something he believes works hand in hand with his songs.

“I play stuff right through the years, a couple of covers and some of the new stuff. If I’m honest, the first thing I do when I get there is go and get a coffee and have a look at the crowd to see the mood they’re in.

“The bottom line is that I’m a communicator and whether that’s talking to the readers of an interview or in an article I’ve written or in a song, I have a perspective that I want to add to the debate,” he said. “It was harder before the 21st century and social media because as someone from a working class background, the only option I had to get my voice out there was to pick up a guitar and now it’s a lot easier.”

“I always have a good time in the North East,” he said.

Known for his political songs, including Take Down the Union Jack, which entered the charts and performed on Top of the Pops in the same year as the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, the singer laughed as he admitted that while his USP is topical music, he’s always played more love songs.

“It’s good to go back, I like to go out on the town and get a good look about. I’m not one of those people who just

And heading to the North East is a homecoming of sorts for the singer, whose first time in the region was back in 1983 for his first ever TV show, The Tube.

“A festival is a bit like a busk. I like to have a wander around because if it’s raining then you want to lift people up, see if they’re in the mood for a sing-along and you look at who was playing before you and see what the vibe is. “There’s a bit of a difference between the modern pop bands – and I say pop and not rock – who try and sound similar to their record. I’ve always been one to live more in the moment.” Billy Bragg is performing at Hardwick Live Festival, which takes place at Hardwick Hall Hotel, Sedgefield, County Durham from 17 to 18 August. A LUXURY EXPERIENCE AT BROOM MILL SKIN BAR You may find you have to pause and wait for a rabbit or a pheasant to move out of the way as you make your way up the drive, but that’s just part of the charm of Broom Mill Skin Bar, at Ferryhill, County Durham. Opened in 2004 by sisters Dawn Larn and Jill Errington, the salon has built up a loyal clientele over the years which Dawn believes is down to their ethos of educating their clients on skin health, as opposed to peddling products. “We’re not pushy, we’re very passionate about empowering people into being able to make their own decisions about their skincare and which ingredients they should be looking out for which will work best for them,” said Dawn. “We will always suggest a free consultation and this allows us to talk through a person’s routine, their products, we can analyse their skin and use the skin scanner and help them decide on the next step.”

The salon is unique in that it is located on a working farm, with the family running both operations on a week on, week off basis. In this case, a week off at the salon means a week on at the farm, where they recently launched Just Grass Angus, their own 100% grass-fed, organic beef. There aren’t many places you can have a relaxing skin treatment and grab the main ingredient for the family dinner you’re cooking later on the way out, but Broom Mill Skin Bar is one of them. And because a salon and a farm isn’t enough, Dawn’s daughters also run their own underwater photography business in what used to be the spa’s pool, shooting everything from babies to families to professional mermaids. There really is something for everyone, serving people of all ages and abilities, with disabled access throughout the building, and clients are encouraged to arrive early or

to leave some time after their treatment to enjoy the coffee area, with an idyllic view out onto the fields. One market in particular that the sisters cater for is teenage skin, with more and more people moving away from medication to solve skin troubles – which can have negative long term effects – and instead choosing to treat the problem in a less quick and easy way, but one that is better for maintaining skin health. And rather than bombarding clients with products, the only brand used in the salon is Dermalogica, something they swear by to such an extent that this is the only skincare product that Dawn’s children have ever used. “I always say I wish I could stay around to see them when they’re 70,” said Dawn, “because I’d love to see if the investment paid off!” Broom Mill Skin Bar offers a range of treatments, including facials, massages, body wraps, manicures and more. For more information or to book, visit www.broommillskinbar.co.uk or call 01740 654225. Darlington Today | 21

CREATIVE WORKPLACES WITH FLEXSPACE

The high street was once the only place to shop but Flexspace are changing that, with an innovative alternative suitable for all business types. One of its spaces, Bede House, at Aycliffe Business Park, Newton Aycliffe, is home to many thriving local companies, including its longest standing business, Roots, a hairdressing salon owned and run by Keith Bailey and his team. While Roots has been in a Flexspace unit for nine years, the history of the business goes

Roots artistic directors

back much further, with Keith first opening his own salon in 1969 in what he described as “more like a shed” and a rich family history in the trade going back more than 300 years. “I was born in a barber shop,” said Keith, “and I was trained to cut hair by my parents. I started when I was 15 years old and did all sorts; wig making and cosmetology, which I then taught when I was 19.” After studying at both Durham University and Leeds University, Keith went on to work at Darlington College teaching hairdressing and also photography – something that goes hand in hand with the various hair shoots he has worked on over the years for clients including Vogue, Elle, Passion and Ministry of Sound. But whether Keith is tending to clients or assisting on a shoot – the salon is currently working with three local films – the Flexspace unit provides a professional setting with great transport links and a real community feeling. “It is a great location because the business park is actually a really creative area,” said Keith.

22 | Darlington Today

“It’s perfect for our clients because it’s easy for them to get to and much quicker than fighting rush hour traffic to get into the town, and that’s before you even think about having to find somewhere to park in the centre. “Many of our previous clients moved to the new space with us and we are always attracting new customers because they love the convenience of the place.” The salon operates with a small team, with each of the staff specialising in different areas, meaning that whether a client goes in for hair extensions, corrections, barbering, a specific look for an occasion or a classic cut and blow dry, they’ve got it covered. And as well as hair, Roots also offers a range of beauty treatments to perfect the overall look. For more information about Roots or to book an appointment, call 01325 311 529 or 07775241530, or visit www.facebook.com/ rootsaycliffe. ON TOP OF THE WORLD A passionate fell walker laid low by a rare neurological condition is on top of the world after returning to the hills with the help of a team of volunteers. A 30-strong band of supporters took more than four hours to push and carry Kenneth Longstaff in a specially adapted wheelchair to the top of the 1,214ft summit of Latrigg in the Lake District. The feat of endurance by Eaglescliffe running club Orchard Eagles, friends and family has helped the 60-year-old, of Darlington, raise more than £1,200 for charity. Proceeds will be divided between St Teresa’s Hospice, Darlington, and the KeyRing disability support group, based at the town’s St Columba’s Church, Clifton Avenue. The event will form part of a documentary on the condition Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare disorder in which the immune system mistakenly attacks nerves causing the body to shut down. Due to be screened next year, the programme is being produced by Poppy Goodheart for BBC4 and directed by Xavier Alford who has been diagnosed with a progressive form of the condition. In 2012 Kenneth was struck down by GBS, which was first noticed by physicians in troops returning from World War I. He spent three and a half years in hospital, including a year in James Cook’s intensive care unit, and still needs 24 hour care at his home, after becoming one of the most serious cases ever seen by his consultant. “It was the most amazing day and one I never expected to experience,” said Kenneth. “Sitting at the top of Latrigg took me back

to my childhood, where we used to picnic, looking over Bassenthwaite, where I caught my first fish, a pike. “I’m so grateful to everyone who organised the walk and apparently they have future plans for me.” The event was organised by David Barugh, a member of Orchard Eagles Running Club, Eaglescliffe, and husband of one of Kenneth’s former carers, Fiona. David, a panel beater, of Eaglescliffe, said: “When I met Kenneth I was touched by his plight. We had so much in common. He had been a mechanic so be both worked with our hands and we both love Lakes. I just wanted to do something for him and wondered whether it would be medically possible to get him back on the fells. When it was and he was so keen to do so, I asked club members and they were delighted to help.”

Kenneth said: “Both are such great organisations and now I can give them something back.” Chief Executive of St Teresa’s Hospice Jane Bradshaw said: “I’m so pleased that Kenneth was able to fulfil this incredible ambition and return to the fells which he loves so much. “Now he knows it can be done I’m sure there will be no stopping him, with the help of the amazing members of Orchard Eagles, and, in turn, we are very grateful to everyone’s support in helping us continue our work for the people of Darlington, South Durham and North Yorkshire.”

BBC director Xavier Alford accompanied the walkers with a cameraman and sound engineer. He said: “I was diagnosed eight years ago and my condition is being controlled at the moment. Every three weeks I have to have my immunoglobin replaced. “It is a rare condition but not as rare as you think. Research is limited and hopefully the documentary will raise awareness among physicians so it can be diagnosed and treated quicker in the future.” Kenneth and his wife Beverley attended the day centre at St Teresa’s for more than a year both receiving counselling and Kenneth physio, acupuncture reflexology and massage. He also attends the KeyRing disability support group where he paints Lakeland landscapes from memory. Darlington Today | 23

Being chased through the woods in the dark by a masked madman may seem like the stuff of nightmares, but one company is giving you the chance to live your very own horror movie experience this Halloween.

HALLOWEEN

HORROR Organised by 700 Acres Ltd, who sold out the event last year, Psycho Path returns to Lintz Hill Farm, at Burnopfield, from 11 to 31 October, with Fearground, a much bigger, better and a whole lot scarier experience than ever before. Not one for the faint hearted, Fearground transforms the site with four scare attractions instead of one, bringing along three new terrors to haunt your dreams… Experience iScream for the first time, a House of Horrors-style maze full of creepy memorabilia, unsettling hosts and a killer clown or two lurking around the corner. Anarchy Arcade is another new addition for a bit of a break between the scares, with a number of aerial artists, fire acts and magicians with a creepy twist, alongside a whole host of street food and drink vendors. And from there, get bundled into a blacked out van for a bumpy ride across

the site to Psycho Path, where you will make your way through seemingly abandoned shipping containers and buildings, all while trying to avoid the horrors creeping in the shadows. And for those who make it that far, it’s not quite over, because this year the route is extended with a new Psycho City attraction. Set in a future where the murderous inhabitants have taken over the land and turned it into a barren wasteland, navigate past burning barrels and car wrecks in a bid to make it out in one piece. And the organisers have partnered with Metro Radio and Gateshead College to create a special version for the little ones, in the daylight and without the terrifying chases, of course. The Family Frightfest takes place between 11am and 4:30pm on 19, 20, 26, 27 and 31 October, for a separate attraction with Halloween fun for all ages.

Enjoy pumpkin carving, magic shows, spooky tales in a tipi, children’s rides, a fun scare maze, face painters, daily fancy dress prizes, a large food and drink area and a professional photography station. Family Frightfest is suitable for little ones aged 1 to 12 years old, priced at £7 for children, £10 for adults and those under 2 go free. There is also a family pass for two adults and two children priced at £29. Tickets for Psycho Path start from £25 and those aged 13 to 16 must be accompanied by an adult. VIVA LAS VEGAS Las Vegas remains one of the world’s favourite destinations – Bernice Saltzer explains why There’s always an exception to the rule. In my case I’ve never understood people who go back to the same destination every year, when there’s a whole world out there to explore. However, in the case of the acknowledged entertainment capital of the planet I make an exception – and hold my hands up as a Vegasaholic. I love Las Vegas – every crazy, over the top, excessive inch of it – from the amazing shows to the lunatic gambling, from the luxury of the 28 | Darlington Today

hotels to the madness of the old town. This was my eighth trip to the city after an absence of three years and although I’m an old hand in some ways, the beauty of the city is that there’s always something new to see. The Las Vegas food scene just goes from strength to strength, with some spectacular new additions. We fell in love with Block 16 at the Cosmopolitan Hotel. It’s a food court with a difference, the result of a long process to bring in some of the USA’s finest homegrown offerings along

It takes some doing to stand out in a city where opulence is everywhere, but that’s certainly the case at the Venetian resort – which comprises the fabulous Venetian and Palazzo hotels – which has added some heavyweight offerings to its already considerably impressive restaurant scene.

And of course when you’re tired of eating – if that’s possible – you can enjoy Vegas’ amazing live entertainment. Celine Dion, Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga were just some of the performers that were playing during our stay.

A trip to Mott 32 took us back to a holiday in Hong Kong – although we never dined in surroundings as magnificent as this. The food was simply to die for with the finest of
