LOCALNEWS AD AGENCY CELEBRATES 10 YEARS IN BUSINESS A LEADING North East media and advertising agency is celebrating a very special anniversary, following a successful decade in business. What started as a dream for Darlington businesswoman, Denise Dickinson, has now turned into a thriving family-run business that has now been running for ten years. Dickinson Media Limited started life in a room in the family home back in July 2007 with just a handful of clients and a designer. Managing Director, Denise Dickinson, has been in the sales arena since 1979 and had a very successful career within the industry, working mainly at the Northern Echo and former regional radio station Century FM. But after a spell at a Teesside advertising agency a little over ten years ago, she decided to go it alone after being encouraged by family and friends to take the plunge. Denise said: “Wherever I have worked I always strived to be, and more often than not – was, the top sales executive for that
particular company. But I always felt I could do more and that’s why I made the decision to start Dickinson Media. “The first few years were particularly tough but I was determined to make it a success. It’s hard to believe we are celebrating ten years in this exciting and challenging industry.” Since launching, the full-service advertising agency has gone from strength-to-strength and now employs Denise’s two sons Adam and Michael, has its own in-house designer and has an office at Lingfield Point in Darlington. Some of the company’s clients include successful Tyneside-based Winn Solicitors and Blue Line Taxis, top Teesside solicitors - Atha and Co, and leading meat firm, George Bolam Foods in Sedgefield, as well as Chatsworth Windows in North Yorkshire. Marking the first ten years, Denise said: “I am proud to have grown this business into a strong and stable agency working with some fantastically loyal clients who have worked with us since day one.
From left to right - Dickinson Media Graphic Designer Steven Kleina, Director Adam Dickinson, Managing Director Denise Dickinson and Business Development Manager Michael Dickinson
“More than that I am delighted my two sons, Adam and Michael decided to join the company. Even before joining us, Adam had already built up his own strong sales reputation with a self-driven work ethic and a determination to do the best for us - but more importantly for our clients. “Michael has a degree in business marketing and his focus is on new business development. While we are celebrating ten years in business the hard work will continue every day to make sure this remains a successful business. We will never rest on our laurels, so here’s to the next ten years and beyond.”
POLAR EXPLORER INCREASES PUPIL INTEREST IN SCIENCE The students, from nursery to Year 5, were also given the opportunity to quiz Cummins engineer Nicky Ingles and take part in a host of hands on experiments led by Springfield science lead Kelly McManus and Year 6 students. “This is our first science fair where every single class has been involved,” said Mrs McManus.
YOUNG scientists have been exploring the many branches of STEM subjects with the help of an Antarctic adventurer.
“Having a real Antarctic explorer and an engineer from Cummins here to talk to our pupils gives a much more practical link to the subject and our students have been full of questions for both of our experts.
Pupils at Springfield Academy, Darlington, took part in a whole school science investigation day assisted by British Antarctic Survey polar explorer Steve Wroe.
“Science is such an important part of our curriculum and is in everything we do. If we can raise the profile of STEM subjects in school our pupils will gain a much better understanding of how it impacts on

them in their everyday life and raise their aspirations to perhaps pursue science as a career in the future” A full spectrum of scientific experiments were on offer for students to take part in, including creating sticky slime, making sugar crystal lollipops, balloon rocket cars, bridge design, fidget spinner investigation, weights and measures and discovering how the human body works. Principal Angela Henderson added: “It has been such a privilege to have experts such as Steve Wroe and Nicky Ingles come to Springfield Academy. “Our students were so enthused at hearing about expeditions to the Antarctic, living in tents in minus 30 degrees, meeting penguins and sledges being pulled by a pack of dogs. “It has really raised their awareness of the vast amount of exciting career opportunities that studying STEM subjects can lead to.”

PETPALS SURPRISE EMPLOYEE ON TENTH ANNIVERSARY A DOGWALKER is celebrating an all-“impawtant” anniversary after spending a decade walking canine companions and accommodating pets while their owners are away. Petpals Darlington and Yarm, a provider of mobile, professional pet care, has recently surprised loyal member of staff, Sandra Dye, 54, on her 10-year work anniversary. Sandra, who joined the fledgling company in its first week of trading in August 2007, started as a dog boarder for the franchise operation - which now employs 12 full-time staff and cares for approximately 300 dogs, 100 cats and 20 small animals a month. Sandra later became one of the company’s dog walkers and now divides her duties between walking and boarding dogs and helping out owners, Sallyann and David Gray, with office administration. Founder of the company Sallyann who, with the rest of the local team, surprised Sandra with chocolates, flowers and champagne as she was about to leave for her morning dog walk, said: “I first met Sandra when we worked together at Sure Start in Darlington. When I left to set up Petpals she said, ‘if

Hospice receives funding boost from Asda Foundation A LEADING North East hospice has received a generous donation from the Asda Foundation. Staff at St Teresa’s Hospice, Darlington, were delighted to receive an £8000 cheque from the foundation, which will help fully refurbish parts of the hospice and allow for the centre’s family support team to expand. The hospice, while part funded by grant aid from the NHS, relies on charitable donations, fundraising events and support from community organisations and businesses to cover the over £2m annual running costs. The application to the Asda Foundation was supported by store colleagues at the Asda store at Neasham Road, Darlington.

ever you need a home boarder or a dog walker, let me know.’ Within a week I had taken her on as a dog boarder and within a year she was a full time dog walker for me as well.’ Mum of two Sandra is still walking and boarding dogs for Petpals, a job she says she loves: “Working for Petpals fits in so well with my lifestyle. Our whole family love having the boarding dogs to stay. When they arrive they fly in the front door, reflecting just how much they see it as their “home from home”, which in turn means their owners can go on holiday knowing their dogs are truly happy. David Gray, husband to Sallyann and joint owner of Petpals, continues: “As well as Sandra’s regular dog walking and boarding role, she also takes on special responsibilities covering the business while we are away and we’d be truly lost without her.”
TECHNOLOGY teachers have developed a bespoke communications tool to help boost parental engagement in school. IT technicians at Beaumont Hill Academy, Darlington, a specialist provider for children with complex needs, are launching an app to enable parents to become more informed and involved in their children’s education. The secure app, which launches in September 2017, will enable staff to upload videos, letters, information and e-safety guidance, as well as pupil’s work, to allow parents to keep up to date with the latest school developments and track their children’s progress.

Beaumont Hill Academy emerging technology lead Clare Steed said: “We are all aware that parents ask, ‘what did you learn in school today?’ and the response is usually, ‘nothing’, or that letters sent home can generally lie in the bottom of a school bag for weeks.
Jane Bradshaw, Chief Executive at St Teresa’s Hospice, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be receiving this donation from the Asda Foundation. “As we strive to offer the best possible care we can, it is important that we have an outstanding facility that is not only fit for purpose, but also user friendly and functional. “It is incredibly beneficial to us as a community to work with and be supported by local businesses such as Asda.” Set up in 1988, the Asda Foundation is a registered charity that aims to have a positive impact on local communities, making independent grants to provide support to a range of local good causes, chosen by Asda’s community life colleagues throughout the UK. Julie Ward, Asda Foundation senior manager, said: “Supporting local applications such as St Teresa’s Hospice is really important to us – and we hope it will make a real difference within the local community in Darlington.”
information to parents was readily available in an easy to access, user friendly format. “Our in-house senior IT technician Sarah Balmer created and developed the app and we have trained our staff to upload content and hosted workshops for parents to learn how to access the information.” The new personalised app, which will be accessible to all parents of the school’s 267 students via their own unique four-digit log in, will provide a constant dialogue of information and any issues can then be accessed and dealt with immediately. The academy is also looking to increase the use of the new technology in the future to upload homework assignments, via the FROG online learning platform, which can be saved on completion and opened in school to help raise student attainment progress in all subject areas.
“Therefore, we realised that we needed to find a way to improve our external communications to ensure that

THEME PARK’S SET TO TRANSFORM INTO ‘FRIGHTWATER’ FOR HALLOWEEN EVENT Lightwater Valley is set to be transformed into ‘Frightwater Valley’ as part of its spooky Halloween celebrations (October 26th-29th). The North Yorkshire theme park will be hosting a series of dastardly Mini, Mega and Ultimate Experiences designed to appeal to visitors of all ages. During the day friendly frights are suitable for the whole family but BE WARNED.... as dusk falls visitors will need to tread very scarefully as the darker the night the scarier the fright! Find out if you’re in for a trick or a treat by knocking loudly on the Monster Doors – you can never guess who, or what, is going to answer! There will be teeth-chattering tours taking place around Eagle’s Creep Farm and daily Halloween character Meet and Greets throughout the park. Head down to the Scareground Station and hop on board the ghost train for a spooky ride. After 4pm the fear-factor increases and rides are recommended for the over 12s only.
Ultimate and Skate Karts which will close at dusk, approx. 4.30pm.
Frightwater’s horribly popular Live Scare Maze is making an unwelcome return. It’s definitely not for the fainthearted and is not suitable for children under the age of 12 due to the extreme nature of the scares.
With over 40 rides and attractions for thrill seekers of all ages, Lightwater Valley Theme Park is one of the UK’s most popular theme parks. Among its signature rides is the 1.5 mile long Ultimate rollercoaster – the longest coaster ride in Europe - and the Eagle’s Claw aerial ride.
Beware as it also gets extremely busy as night falls.
The scares culminate with the Frightwater Finale lakeside fireworks spectacular at 6.15pm.
All the parks usual rides and attractions will be open until 6pm except The Frightwater Valley is taking place from Thursday, October 26th – Sunday, October 29th at Lightwater Valley, North Stainley, Ripon, North Yorkshire HG4 3HT. For details visit www.lightwatervalley.co.uk or call 01765 635321.

Welcome to Darlington Theatre Town… Shannon Hodge takes a look at how Darlington plans to cement itself as a town where both its theatres, and its people, thrive. An exciting new initiative has launched in Darlington to bring ambitious and high quality theatre to the town. Darlington Theatre Town, funded by Arts Council England and Darlington Borough Council, grew from the opportunity presented by the redevelopment of the town’s Civic Theatre – which is opening as Darlington Hippodrome this autumn. The exciting development of Theatre Hullabaloo’s new creative hub for young audiences - The Hullabaloo, which opens this winter, also inspired the creation of the project, as well as the momentum that has built over the last couple of years around theatre in unusual places, by events such as the award-winning Jabberwocky Market. Bringing together the expertise of partners Creative Darlington – which supports arts in the town, the soonto-open Darlington Hippodrome, Luxi – an organisation advancing education
and participation in the arts, Theatre Hullabaloo and new writing and production company ODDMANOUT, the primary goal of the project is to cement Darlington’s place as a Theatre Town and a place where creativity thrives.
A busy schedule of ambitious and highquality theatre has been launched as part of the initiative, with the first event, The Ball, kick-starting a jam-packed programme of events. The open-air, street performance was held on the evening of Saturday, 26 August, and saw Darlington’s Market Square transformed into an extravagant stage where people of the town were invited to enjoy a unique show. Presented by Wet Picnic - an ensemble that creates high-impact visual and physical theatre for everyone, not controlled by space or location - The Ball centred around the themes of greed, power and family, and the underlying value was a tale as old as time.
8 | Darlington Today
But that’s not all, after enjoying the show, the audience were encouraged to party like no other as The Afterparty kicked off with much merriment, dancing and grandeur. Stephen Wiper manager of Creative Darlington, said: “The Ball production built on the strengths of the town, and the market place was the perfect setting for the piece. As a bustling hub of activity for meeting, exchanging ideas and having debate; it portrays exactly what the theatre itself does.” Other highlights of the programme include touring theatre company Paines Plough bringing their pop-up, plug-andplay theatre space, Roundabout, to the North East for the first time in October.
The new home for Theatre Hullabaloo – a pioneering organisation that promotes theatre for young audiences, will also open in December and will be named The Hullabaloo.
Roundabout will feature a specially curated programme of shows and events and for the younger audiences, an immersive and sensory performance for pre-walking babies, Nest. Alongside the programme of theatre in the town, the partners are also working together to create training opportunities for the wider sector, to develop and share knowledge and data about audiences, create wraparound activity to reach audiences and build interest and excitement around the opening of Darlington Hippodrome and The Hullabaloo.
The Darlington Hippodrome at Parkgate will open in November, following a multimillion-pound restoration and the opening season has finally been revealed. As a curtain-raiser and emotional homecoming, DarlingtonOS will launch the re-opening with Strictly Musicals 2 – a song and dance extravaganza featuring some of the best-loved musicals of all time including Mamma Mia, Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, Chicago, Jersey Boys and many, many more. Be one of the first to see inside the new venue from Tuesday 21 to Saturday 25 November. And Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without a pantomime. This year, the Hippodrome will have the fairest of them all - Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Starring boy band and soap star Lee Ryan alongside Darlington’s own West End leading lady Zoe Birkett, this year’s pantomime will be packed full of comedy, songs, dance numbers and the usual pantomime magic from Saturday 9 December.
The venue is built within an Edwardian fire station on a site adjacent to Darlington’s Hippodrome and will present world-class performances for children in its 15-seat studio theatre, house creative play installations and offer a wide range of creative opportunities and classes for families to get involved in.
The Hullabaloo will be the only specialist theatre of its type north of London and its recent grant of £140,000 from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation will go towards the costs of programmes to engage young audiences and families for years to come. Councillor Nick Wallis from Darlington Borough Council, said: “This is an exciting time for Darlington which is cementing its image as a theatre town. And the first event, The Ball was a prime example that theatre really is for everyone.”

Bring The Warmth Into Your Home
An iconic classic, the AGA Cooker still tops the top-ten must haves for the home
The classic look of an AGA Cooker hasn’t changed much since its invention in 1922 by Swedish scientist Gustaf Dalen. The beauty of an AGA is its effortless design, and they are built and crafted at the AGA Factory in Telford. The cooker is constructed of cast iron, and its raw material is still smelted at the Coalbrookdale Foundry in Shropshire. All this makes it clear that an AGA is still a Great British product. The cooker itself works on the principle of stored heat. Using a small energy source (whether it be electricity, gas or oil) the high level of insulation inside the cooker holds the heat and distributes different temperatures to the castings of the cooker. It is a simple but effective resource, and running costs for gas models are currently less than £12 per week. As the cooker is on all the time, the beautiful warmth from the Aga produces an ambient temperature which seeps into the fabric of the building, silently but sweetly raising the temperatur and reducing your requirement for additional heating in your kitchen. In the cooler North East climate and in the modern open plan kitchen design the AGA is ideal for providing
constant warmth. More recently, models of fully- or semi controllable AGA Cookers have become available. There is also a compact baby AGA which will fit into any small flat or cottage, or suit a smaller budget – there really is an AGA to suit every home and every lifestyle. Founded in 1888, the family-run business Walter Dix & Co became one of the first AGA dealers in 1931, covering Tyneside, Northumberland, Durham and North Yorkshire. To this day they provide expert advice on AGA and employ both their own installation team and service engineers. Their fantastic showroom at Team Valley,
Gateshead boasts all the latest models of AGA Cooker and also hosts regular cookery demonstrations. Their knowledgeable staff can demonstrate working models and provide all the necessary information on why an AGA can truly bring the warmth into your home. In addition to AGA Cookers, Walter Dix & Co also is the leading supplier of rangestyle cookers. They have 14 different brands and more than 70 appliances on display in their showroom, as well as a dedicated AGA Cookshop and AGA Wood Burning Stoves. To find out more, get in touch or visit the Team Valley showroom which is open six days a week.

A LITTLE CORNER OF THE OUTSKIRTS OF DARLINGTON IS THE UNLIKELY HOME OF ONE OF THE UK’S HOTTEST CHEFS...
It says something about the high regard that the culinary industry holds chef James Close in that on a bank holiday weekend his restaurant is buzzing with the great and the good of the cookery world. Every inch of The Raby Hunt – the two Michelin starred restaurant run by James in the tiny village of Summerhouse – is literally awash with top chefs.

Michael Wignall, two star chef at Gidleigh Park, cooks up a storm in the new chef’s table area while Larry Jayasekara, of the acclaimed Petrus restaurant, serves up in the main restaurant area. Peter Sanches-Iglesias – another Michelin starred chef from Casmia in Bristol – is working next to Tim Allen, formerly of The Wild Rabbit. And so it goes on – seven revered kitchen masters who all came together for a very special event. Seven Chefs, Seven Snacks was James’ giving back event, raising money for Hospitality Action. A huge success when it was held last year, this time around he put out the call for other top chefs to come along and create snacks for the ticket-buying public to enjoy, with all the proceeds going to the charity. Of course these weren’t ordinary snacks. Creations like Pigs blood with giancale, curried onion, apple, nasturtium and maple verjus were enjoyed, alongside such culinary wonders as oyster, buttermilk, fennel and lardo or James’ own contribution -retired dairy cow 12 | Darlington Today

remarkable and unconventional chef and eventually he caught the attention of Michelin inspectors, winning his first star in 2012.
“I started off wanting to be a professional golfer,” he said. “But that didn’t really work out so I went to London where my brother was, stayed with him and worked as a labourer. “I suddenly realised that the only thing I was really interested in was food so I thought I might as well do something with that.” His parents then decided to buy a rundown pub – The Raby Hunt – in their near-by village, with the aim of James coming in and running the kitchen.

There were trips to Belgium, Spain, Germany, France, Switzerland and across Scandinavia, soaking up what those at the cutting edge of cookery were doing.
“But you can’t move forward as a chef if you are just doing the same thing, you need to be constantly developing and growing.”
Gradually his new dishes found their way on to the menu – and met with an overwhelmingly positive reception by visitors.

Living his dream Karl Brown, a former East Durham College Houghall student, is now living his dream of working with animals as Stocksman at Beamish Museum in County Durham.
Karl, 23, from Pelton close to Beamish, is passionate about animal care and farming and after some research into how he could pursue this passion as a career, he chose East Durham College to study animal care.
2010/11 for one year, earning Karl a Level 2 qualification after its successful completion. He then used this qualification to gain employment as an apprentice at Beamish, which was also organised by the college.
“I chose the animal care course because I’ve always loved working with small animals; after starting on the course at East Durham College, I realised that I actually enjoyed the farming and livestock side of things even more,” Karl explained.
Karl said: “I worked as an agriculture apprentice at Beamish for 18 months, I moved up to a farmhand before stepping up as Stocksman - a role that is extremely hands-on taking care of the animals which I love.”
The course Karl studied at Houghall, in Durham, ran in

When asked about his time at East Durham College, Karl was full of praise for the college and its lecturers at Houghall. He said: “It’s a great college, it’s very different from other colleges. I really liked the lecturers there, they’re all very friendly and knowledgeable people.”

24 hours in Amsterdam
Shannon Hodge explores both the cultural and cheekier side of the Netherlands’ capital… “You’re going to Amsterdam with your mum?” everyone said. “It’s not really the type of place you go to with your mum, is it?” Well, after a fun-filled 24 hours of canal cruises, pancakes, cocktails, tittering like children in the sex museum, rapidly trying to avoid eye contact with the working ladies of the Red Light District and then learning about the background of said ladies in the Red Light Secrets Museum of Prostitution - I can quite honestly say that going to Amsterdam with my mum was an absolute hoot. 28 | Darlington Today
After booking bargain flights on a whim less than a month before, we were eager to explore what “the Dam” had to offer and we weren’t left disappointed.
double-decker train towards Centraal Station, where we then had a short fiveminute walk to our hotel, Inntel Hotels Amsterdam Centre.
With beautiful canals, streets and buildings spattered in glittering lights and an endless amount of shops including tourist stores selling clog slippers, street vendors selling the famous “frites” with sauce, and not forgetting the legendary C&A - which mum was overjoyed to learn was still available in the Netherlands – we were keen to squeeze as much in to our 24 hours as possible.
The hotel staff were lovely upon checkin and circled all the Amsterdam hot spots on a map for us before sending us up to our snazzy four-star room.
After completing our full day’s Fitbit target walking from one end of Schipol airport to the other, we hopped on the
Naturally, the room was spacious and clean but my favourite part had to be the toiletries - in which they provided the usual shampoo, shower gel and soap but also provided a sewing kit, pampering bath crystals, a vanity kit and a shoe shining sponge - what more could you want? There was also a fully stocked mini bar which you could purchase things
from but the hotel’s close proximity to Dam Square meant that you could stuff your face for a whole lot cheaper by venturing out. Our first stop after checking in at the hotel was a canal cruise. For nine euros each, we got an hour cruise on the canals, where our lovely Dutch driver told us some facts about Amsterdam, including how the houses are so narrow that they have a hook at the top of each house to tow furniture to different floors through the windows. After the oh-so cultural canal cruise, we decided to embrace the cheekier
Exploring museums is hefty work, so Dutch pancakes, better known in Amsterdam as pannenkoeken, were definitely on the cards. We stopped at the first place we came across, which was conveniently called Pancakes! and can be seen in huge letters when you leave Centraal Station. One word AMAZING. After our quick snack stop we decided to do a little more exploring and just so happened to walk right into the Red Light District (really, it just springs up on you.) The Red Light District was an experience in itself – with women and trans-women of all ages, sizes and races stood in front of their well-lit windows trying to collar those passing by. Those interested in learning more about Amsterdam’s working girls, like we were, can head to the Red Light Secrets Museum of Prostitution, which is also based in the Red Light District.
side of Amsterdam by heading to the Sex Museum at Damrak - enticed by its four-euro price tag. I don’t know what I was expecting when we entered but I was quite taken aback at how full-frontal it really was. After seeing more sex pictures and promiscuous mannequins than I care to count and posing with a giant penis statue, I can safely say we resembled giggling children in our first sex ed talk. If nothing else, the Sex Museum was a hilarious visit and definitely worth going for its purse-friendly price tag.
Without giving too much away, the museum was based in what used to be a brothel, in which a prostitute was murdered by a client. Entry for the museum is 8 euros and the audio tour, which was narrated by a Netherlands working girl of 15 years, could be bought for an additional 1.50 euros.
The museum was incredibly insightful, giving facts and figures on human trafficking, interactive sections on what a typical brothel bedroom and “play room” looks like, as well as what it’s like to be stood in a Red Light District window as real passers-by look at you from the street below. The museum also features documentary-style videos and a memorial to those whose lives have been taken working in the brothels. After a busy afternoon and evening exploring, we headed back to the hotel for a cocktail or two before calling it a night. The following day, our final few hours before our flight home were spent exploring Amsterdam’s shops – with Coolcat, HEMA, de Bijenkorf and Drake’s Boutique being firm favourites. Finally, after a jam-packed 24 hours of fashion, food and frolics, we were ready for home but don’t worry Amsterdam, we’ll be back...
