SETTING THE STAGE A gladiator, a former prisoner and even a human seal - get ready to meet these interesting characters and many more, at the return of one of Darlington’s most unusual events… Since its launch in October 2013, Jabberwocky Market has enthralled visitors of all ages with its unique offering of world-class theatre, played out twice yearly in venues across Darlington. This March, the popular festival is returning with four days of new performances, all designed to put audiences at the heart of the action, as producer Caroline Pearce explains.
The Jabberwocky Market, organised in partnership with the internationally-renowned Battersea Arts Centre and with core funding from Arts Council England and the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, will run from Thursday March 26 to Sunday March 29. Some of the highlights at the event, which is also supported by Creative Darlington, Darlington for Culture, Darlington Council and the Jerwood Foundation, include: The Adventure - Thursday March 26 Gloriator - Thursday March 26 Quaker Meeting House Scratch Night - Friday March 27 Quaker Meeting House The Frights - Saturday March 28 Quaker Meeting House
“This year we’re bringing together a diverse mix of stories that you simply wouldn’t get to see anywhere else,” she said.
Lorraine and Alan - Saturday March 28 Quaker Meeting House
“The line-up has been chosen very deliberately to appeal to a wide age range, from families looking for a quick introduction to live theatre, to the older people and students who frequented events at the former arts centre.”
Tickets for all of these events and more, including a drop in session on a vintage bus and a live performance on a train, are available individually or as part of an all-access Festival Pass from www.jabberwockymarket.org.uk
“What all of the shows have in common though, is their ability to draw the audience in and, in some cases, make them an active part of the story. It’s a unique experience and one we’re delighted to be bringing back to Darlington town centre.”
