Back To Bacharach - 24th March 2018

Ed Byrne: Spoiler Alert 25th April 2018

A welcome return to the Forum Theatre as Back to Bacharach celebrates the magical music of Burt Bacharach, one of the most accomplished popular composers of the 20th Century, who together with Hal David penned some of the most memorable and iconic hits. This exciting production is touring throughout the U.K. and is performed by 3 of the finest west end singers accompanied by a live 10 piece band recreating Burt Bacharach’s timeless hits. Songs featured in the show include Alfie, Arthur’s Theme, Always Something There To Remind Me, Close To You, I Say A Little Prayer For You, Magic Moments, Walk On By, What’s New Pussycat? and many more.

I originally intended to call the show, “I’ll Millennial You in a Minute”, but my promoter considered the title, “off-puttingly baffling”. That’s my own chainsaw in the photo, by the way. Is life that bad or have we good reason to complain about it? Are we filled with righteous anger at a world gone wrong or are we all just a bunch of whiny little brats? In short, are we spoiled? ‘Comedy’s Holy Grail. Go See!’ Sunday Times

LOCALNEWS JUDO GLORY FOR RISING STAR CHARLIE AYRE ALL-conquering judo champ Charlie Ayre is reaching for the stars after another stellar year. The 12-year-old martial artist won a second British title in December, and was crowned under 34kg British Judo Champion, adding to his under-27kg title 2015 and a silver medal at under-30kg in 2016. Over the last 14 months Charlie has competed seven times, picking up a staggering five gold and two silver medals in competitions the length and breadth of the UK, with a win-loss ratio last year of 20-1. Proud dad Paul, who manages Middlesbrough Council’s Everyone Active leisure contract, was himself crowned junior British Judo Champion in 1987 at the age of 14. He said: “Charlie has continued to make great progress with his judo this year and trained really hard to enable him to achieve some fantastic results along the way. “He is now back in training after a break for Christmas and we hope he can build on his success from 2017.”

PROJECT CELEBRATES TOWN HALL DESIGNER’S STORY THE story of the man behind one of Middlesbrough’s key landmarks has been uncovered as part of a major heritage project. George Gordon Hoskins’ role in the design of the town’s historic Town Hall features in the latest ‘My Town Hall’ blog. It’s the latest in a series focusing on key figures and events associated with Middlesbrough Town Hall as part of the ongoing Heritage Lottery Fundsupported restoration and refurbishment project. Shaun Marshall, a Local History Research Volunteer on the project, has highlighted the fascinating career of the Grade II* Listed landmark’s architect. As well as discussing Hoskins’ early years, the blog reveals the extensive contribution the architect made in shaping Victorian Teesside, the influence of Alfred Waterhouse who designed Manchester Town Hall, and Hoskins’ work on a number of properties across the region. Among the other properties designed by Hoskins were commissions for the Pease and Backhouse families such as Spensley’s Emporium in Middlesbrough which was previously a bank in the heart of the town’s commercial district.

Judo champ Charlie Ayre in action

Charlie - also a keen footballer and Boro season ticket holder - has been doing judo for four years, reaching green belt level. He trains at and competes for Thornaby Pavilion Judo Club under the guidance of 85-year-old Judo legend Joe Glynn and has for the last 18 months also been working with a technical judo coach and family friend Shahram Shabazi. Paul added: “Judo is fantastic for exercise, recreation, and building self-confidence but it’s the competition side that Charlie likes best. “I’d like to think his success will act as inspiration to other young people to find out just how rewarding martial arts or any sports can be.”

Middlesbrough Town Hall was officially opened in 1889 by the Prince and Princess of Wales during a visit to the town. Heritage Development Officer Dr Tosh Warwick said: “The blog on G.G. Hoskins has helped George Gordon reveal new information Hoskins - courtesy of Middlesbrough Libraries on Middlesbrough Town Hall’s architect and the role he played more widely in shaping the area’s Victorian built environment. “The research undertaken through volunteering on the project underlines the important contribution that the wider community Spensley’s Emporium, previously makes in Backhouse Bank 1876 - courtesy celebrating our of Teesside Archives heritage.” The improvement works have been made possible thanks to £3.7m funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and £4m from Middlesbrough Council. Engagement and Learning Officer Liz Hayward added: “The developments arising from the improvement works will help improve access to the Town Hall and help make the venue a centre of activity in the heart of Middlesbrough.” • The My Town Hall campaign is aiming to bring together a collective story of the venue through individual memories and more are still being sought.

Civil Engineering company develops revolutionary digital portal AWARD-WINNING Seymour Civil Engineering, one of the Tees Valley’s leading civil engineering firms, has launched its own company training portal set to digitally revolutionise the way construction sites are run across Middlesbrough and the wider region. The portal focuses on the training and staffing side of projects allowing any site manager to have a clear snapshot of staff-on-site and their training credentials, whilst automatically prompting the system administration team before employee training requires renewal. Martin Russell, Training Systems Administrator said, “We set out looking for a cloud based, transparent system, that would manage our training needs and be accessible from a multitude of devices across all our sites for all user levels, whether it be a site manager or a client. “Seymour is always thinking about ways in which technology can be used to make employees jobs easier and departments more productive. “We wanted an intelligent system that would automatically present the training team with the information they needed on a daily basis, improving the efficiency of the whole process.” The portal is cloud based so accessible from anywhere and with our new employee ID cards having a QR code which allows anyone to see exactly what certifications each employee has all in one place, at the click of a button, from any location. An important aspect of the portals development was its mobile friendly functionality, so all users working on site have access to the portal via their mobile device along with their PC, laptops and tablets. Martin said: “The intelligent search function within the new portal will allow the site managers, as well as users from other departments across the business, to quickly find out what qualifications each employee working on their site has, along with their certificates which are all uploaded to the platform. We can already see that through this system we are streamlining operations.” Karl Brennan, Pre-Construction Director said “The training portal is a prime example of how Seymour utilises innovation to create opportunities whilst contributing to society. We are also extremely delighted to have been presented with the CECA award for training company of the year after judges were impressed with our achievement.” “It is great to gain recognition after all the hard work that goes into ensuring our employees have the skill set they require to carry out their duties to a very high standard.” Seymour was recently awarded Training Company of the Year 2017 at the recent CECA NE Awards in recognition to their commitment to training and up skilling as well as their innovative and exemplar solution to ensure all staff have the training they require to undertake their daily tasks and offer continual personal development.

SCHOOL CROSSING PATROLLERS’ LONG SERVICE CELEBRATED MIDDLESBROUGH’S school crossing patrollers have been honoured for their long service – with 285 years between them. A celebration event was held at Middlesbrough Town Hall to recognise the dedication and professionalism of the town’s 26 ‘lollipop’ men and women. Two members of the Middlesbrough Council team have been serving their communities for over 30 years, while 21 have been with the authority for at least five years. The ceremony saw the school crossing patrollers given long service badges corresponding to their length of service from the town’s Deputy Mayor Cllr Charlie Rooney. He said: “This event was just a small way of saying thank you to our school crossing patrollers for their work all year round and in all weathers. “Between the members of the team an amazing number of years’ service has been given and it was a pleasure to meet them.” School crossing patrols were introduced in the UK in 1954 following an act of parliament which gave local authorities the discretion to provide assistance to help children cross the road on their way to and from school.

VIEWS SOUGHT ON COUNCIL PRIORITIES AND BUDGET PROPOSALS School Crossing Patrollers – Middlesbrough’s Deputy Mayor, Cllr Charlie Rooney, centre, pictured with Middlesbrough Council school crossing patrollers on the steps of the Town Hall following a long service celebration. Together the team of 26 have racked up 285 years’ service.

Despite the crossing patrols being in place for more than 60 years research has found that many drivers fail to stop when signalled to do so, or set off again before the school crossing patroller has returned to the pavement.

Currently in development, Middlesbrough Council’s Strategic Plan 2018-21 will outline the priorities that will underpin the town’s future growth and prosperity. Over the coming months, the views of residents, businesses and other stakeholders will be sought as a vital strand of the planning process.

Many motorists also do not know that failure to obey a school crossing patrol stop sign could result in a maximum fine of £1,000 plus 3 points on a driving license.

Members of the public are being asked to complete a short questionnaire on the Council’s website to give their views on the plans.

Cllr Rooney added: “It is worth all motorists being aware of this and to always be considerate of the safety of children and patrollers.”

The latest proposals form part of the latest phase of the Council’s Change Programme, which has seen the authority transform the way it delivers services in response to the austerity measures and budget cuts introduced by the Coalition Government in 2010.

MADE IN TEES VALLEY – FROM INSPIRATION TO EXHIBITION A SPECIAL exhibition is allowing Middlesbrough school students to show off their creativity. Made in the Tees Valley has seen Year 3 and 4 students from Sacred Heart RC Primary take their inspiration from design legend Christopher Dresser.

The students were inspired an earlier exhibition about Japan and celebrating the 150th anniversary of Christopher Dresser’s visit to the country whose art and culture would have a profound influence on his Linthorpe Pottery. All the students who have taken part in the project will attend a VIP opening event on Saturday with their families, with the show opening to the public at 12.30pm Dorman Museum Access Officer Sue Sedgwick said: “Middlesbrough has fantastic history and heritage, and it’s not just industrial. Christopher Dresser was a huge figure in the world of design, and his work remains as fresh, relevant collectible as it’s ever been.

The town’s ambitious Investment Programme will see council investment of approximately £74 million to attract external investment estimated at £625 million, helping to grow Middlesbrough’s economic base, raise the towns profile nationally and create opportunities for local people. The Social Regeneration Strategy will deliver improvements for residents by improving health, employment, skills, neighbourhood and community outcomes.

Their handiwork will shortly go on display at the town’s Dorman Museum which has a gallery dedicated to the 19th century artist. The budding young designers have created their own ceramic pieces and Japanese windsocks for a show that opens to the public on Saturday, January 27 and runs until Sunday, March 25.

A CONSULTATION is now underway on plans for regeneration, investment, jobs and local services for the years ahead in Middlesbrough.

That’s been a huge inspiration for the students from Sacred Heart, and they’ve thrown themselves into this project with boundless enthusiasm. They’ve created a wonderful exhibition which shows the creative spirit of Christopher Dresser is alive and well in Middlesbrough today. They can be immensely proud of what they’ve achieved, and I have no doubt their display will be enjoyed by everyone who visits the museum over the next month.” Sacred Heart Assistant Head Kerry Mallam said: “The students have had great fun developing their own exhibition, and have learned a great deal in the process. Made in the Tees Valley is a tribute to their hard work, and to the enduring inspiration of Christopher Dresser.” • For more information on exhibitions and events at the Dorman Museum, visit www. dormanmuseum.co.uk

In light of continued budget cuts and external pressures, savings of nearly £6 million for 2018-19 are required, with nearly £2 million being achieved through increased income and £2.5 million from the transformation of children’s social care. Further proposed savings include £300,000 through the implementation of digital mail and purchasing systems, £400,000 from efficiencies from partnership working. Proposals also include the closure of parts of Ayresome Industries due to lack of demand for goods produced, to achieve total savings of nearly £200,000. The small number of staff affected will be redeployed where possible or supported to find alternative employment. Middlesbrough Mayor Dave Budd said: “Everyone at Middlesbrough Council is working to build a fairer, safer and stronger Middlesbrough for the benefit of all our residents, communities and businesses. We would greatly appreciate all feedback on these budget proposals which are the bedrock on which our vision of an even better Middlesbrough are based.” • To complete the questionnaire visit www.middlesbrough.gov.uk/ consultation

With various positions available across the firm, from team manager positions to businesses energy consultants, Splash are looking to create a further 70 new jobs in their Middlesbrough office. Background industry knowledge is preferred but not essential. Full training and development will all be done in house. Middlesbrough Council, along with several other support agencies, is delighted to be able to support the company with its recruitment plans.

NEW FILM EXPLORES WINTER GARDEN ‘SOCIAL EXPERIMENT’ THE heritage of one of early 20th century Middlesbrough’s most important institutions has been explored in a new short film. The Winter Wonder – The Middlesbrough Winter Garden resulted from a collaboration between Teesside University students and Middlesbrough Council. Students Joe Sherry, Daniel Broomes and Michael Fleming carried out research into the history of the Winter Garden using material from the collections of Middlesbrough Reference Library and Teesside Archives as part of their Film and TV degree programme. As part of their course the students interviewed historian and Middlesbrough Council’s Heritage Development Officer Dr Tosh Warwick to produce a short feature film on the history of the Winter Garden. The work reveals the story of the wider context in which the playwright and social investigator Lady Florence Bell established the Winter Garden in 1907, its function as a place of comfort and entertainment in winter months and its support of Belgian refugees during the First World War. The film also uses unique material from the collections of Middlesbrough Reference Library and Teesside Archives to tell the story of the ‘social experiment’ which attracted nationwide attention that also hosted art exhibitions and lectures by senior political figures and ‘Queen of the Desert’ Gertrude Bell. Joe Sherry said: “As soon as I found out about the Winter Garden I was intrigued and knew that it presented a good opportunity for a project. “After carrying out research I was surprised to find that not many people knew what it was. “I wanted to produce this short film about the Winter Garden which will hopefully spread awareness about the venue and inspire others to learn more about its history.” The Teesside University and Middlesbrough Council link-up is the latest initiative to celebrate the heritage of the Winter Garden.

New Water Utilities brokerage Splash Utilities is now settled into their new 8,000 sq ft premises in Royal Middlehaven House, Middlesbrough and with 30 staff already in place, the planned recruitment drive is now in full swing.

Winter Garden Plan 27c - courtesy of Teesside Archives

In recent years a new Tees Transporter Trail blue plaque has been installed at the Dundas Shopping Centre, built on the site of the Winter Garden, while the history of the venue also features on the new Heritage Lottery Fund supported free Tees Transporter Bridge Heritage App. A host of talks and events have also been held on the Winter Garden including as part of the Middlesbrough Council-supported Discover Middlesbrough and Local History Month annual programmes with future talks planned in the coming months by the Middlesbrough Winter Garden Project. Dr Tosh Warwick added: “The collaboration with Teesside University students reflects an ongoing commitment by Middlesbrough Council to work collaboratively in celebrating the area’s rich heritage.

Managing Director of Splash Utilities Tony Anderson said: “We are extremely excited to see the next phase of our business plan roll out. Bringing in more highly driven, motivated staff members will only add to the brilliant team we already have in place. “I can’t thank the supporting agencies enough for the help they have given us and hopefully through all of our efforts we will see Splash Utilities continue to grow.” Mr Anderson previously revealed Middlesbrough was chosen over other cities, including Leeds, and said: “The network links are great, we’re just off the A66, the train station is next door, car parking – which will be really important when we are at full capacity, facilities for the staff. It feels fantastic and to be part of that is really exciting for us.” • For more information about Splash Utilities and to view all job vacancies visit www.splash-utilities.co.uk

“The numerous activities in recent years relating to the Winter Garden underline the ways in which the Council has worked with the business community, creative sectors, historical organisations, volunteers and education providers to share Middlesbrough’s history with the wider community.” • Winter Wonder – The Middlesbrough Winter Garden can be viewed on Youtube www.youtube.com/watch?v=4781nqGrbLo • For more information on the Tees Transporter Bridge Heritage App visit www.teestransporterbridge.com • More information on the Tees Transporter Bridge can be found at www.teestransporterbridge.com

Blood, Sweat and Scones Bronia McGregor caught up with Keith Bell to discuss his new book, Blood, Sweat and Scones, which describes what happens when you make your home a tourist attraction.

Middlesbrough Today | 11

When Keith and Maggie Bell were house-hunting more than 20 years ago for somewhere big enough both to live in and house Keith’s management consultancy business, they fell in love with Crook Hall from the very first viewing. And many visitors over the years have now done the same, thanks to Keith and Maggie making the bold decision to open the manor house to the public, a journey that is documented in Keith’s new book, Blood, Sweat and Scones.

“I’ve reached the age where you start to look back and reflect and I was in the middle of writing a book about my life when my wife suggested writing about Crook Hall,” Keith explained. “I’ve been really impressed with the response, I’ve had people who rarely ever pick up a book tell me that they thoroughly enjoyed it and couldn’t put it down and I can’t ask for better feedback than that.” Two decades after the Bell’s first purchased the property, Crook Hall and Gardens is now one of the Durham’s top visitor attractions, with people coming from far and wide to view the listed building and explore the idyllic gardens surrounding the property.

12 | Middlesbrough Today

“One thing that never fails to surprise us is the generosity of the people who come to visit the hall,” said Keith.

“In our dining room we have a huge mirror which was a donation from someone who visited the hall and a painting that a local artist made and gifted to us. “Another time, we had bought 12 chairs at an auction that we had displayed in the house and a couple visiting from West London offered us two more.” Crook Hall seems to have that effect on people, with many people who visit the property returning time and time again and becoming charmed with the medieval building. “There was one girl who used to come and visit with her mum and then when she got older and went to university, she introduced it to her friends and she actually ended up deciding to have her wedding here as well.

“Opening the hall for events and weddings has been illuminating; we’ve met so many different characters. We feel extremely lucky that people want to come and visit the property and we really do see them as guests in our home.” And it’s not hard to see why Crook Hall and Gardens is so popular, with a maze, stunning views of Durham from the front of the hall and a pastoral setting at the rear with nothing but woodland and greenery. As well as having the regular issues that come with owning a home, in Blood, Sweat and Scones Keith describes some of the uncommon occurrences he has had experienced while living in the medieval manor house. “When Maggie and I were getting ready for a dinner at the hall with someone from the university, our gardener suddenly called me in from the Jacobean room and said “You’ll want to see this.” “A jackdaw had flown down the chimney and brought with it an avalanche of soot which covered the whole room. “It took a few hours to get it clean and wasn’t what I had planned to do but living here, there’s never a boring day.” Crook Hall is a building brimming with history and it would be hard to write about it without mentioning the

stories of the ghostly presences that inhabit the manor. It’s a topic that has piqued the interests of many and the haunting tales have spooked everyone from visitors to employees. And although he isn’t personally convinced, Keith has dedicated a whole chapter of the book to the subject for the fans of the paranormal. “We’re currently renovating what will be another holiday apartment for people to come and stay in and one of our workmen refuses to work there alone because of the ghostly happenings that are associated with the house,” explained Keith. “I prefer to go off the feeling you get when you walk through a front door and when I walked through Crook Hall for the first time, I felt comfortable and welcomed.

“But I will say that despite a few hiccups at the start, the house has always seemed to lend itself to everything that we have decided to do with it.” Blood, Sweat and Scones: Two Decades at Crook Hall can be purchased from any major book retailer or from Crook Hall and Garden’s website, http:// crookhallgardens.co.uk/shop/bloodsweat-scones-keith-bell/.

FINDING TEESSIDE STEEL IN A LAND DOWN UNDER YOU’RE never far from Teesside steel – even on the other side of the world. Julie Gordon moved to New Zealand in 2003, but always looks forward to visits home and a treasured view of the Transporter Bridge high above the Tees. But she wasn’t prepared for a surprise local connection when she and husband Brett bought a weekend getaway at Waikawa Beach, an hour’s drive from their home in Wellington.

“I’ve always had pictures of the Transporter Bridge up in the house as reminders of my home town.

New Zealander Brett added: “We came three years ago, but unfortunately the Transporter was closed, so I’ve really been looking forward to coming back and seeing it close up.

“They’ve been looking forward to this trip for ages, and I’m grateful to the team down at the Transporter for making them feel so welcome, and for helping to make it a truly memorable visit.”

“Finding the inscription on the bridge at Waikawa Beach has really made a personal connection for us. “It really is an impressive structure, and the views from the top are absolutely stunning.” “It’s been fantastic to finally go across on the Transporter and take the lift to the top.

A RARE GEM From aquamarines and amethysts to rubies and rose quartz, the Americanborn designer, who has made her home on Tyneside, sources the finest gems and crystals for her SALOME jewellery brand. And the designs, which celebrate the stones in their natural form, are finding favour as far afield as London and New York, Founded in 2015, SALOME’s bespoke, handmade, collections – stocked at Newcastle’s The Biscuit Factory and available online - were quickly snapped up by Edinburgh’s high end COVET store and Wolf & Badger, in London’s prestigious Mayfair. Such was the brand’s success that Wolf & Badger’s New York store and Hemline, in New Orleans’ fashionable French Quarter, followed suit. And sales of SALOME’s necklaces, earrings and bracelets have outstripped even Kellie’s most optimistic expectations. “Obviously I knew from the success of the collections in Britain that there was a strong and growing market for my jewellery,” said Kellie, “but even I had no idea it would catch on as quickly in the US as it has.” 18 | Middlesbrough Today

Fashion conscious women across the world are snapping up jewellery created by North East designer Kellie Daniels – and now you could WIN a stunning necklace in our competition.

The collections – crafted with stones sourced from locations as diverse as California and the South Pacific – are designed to reflect the beauty of the natural world and, because of variations within the stones themselves, no two pieces are exactly alike. Among the collections within the SALOME brand are the newly released L’Etoile Collection – which features star cut stones in rare blue aventurine, noir quartz, and smoky quartz– and the more stylised Le Reve, which explores movement, suspension and light through natural stone and metal. SALOME’s Tribal Collection – featuring stones such as jasper, sapphire, aquamarine and labradorite – has proved particularly popular with fashionable US shoppers thanks to its extreme wearability and style – and now one of the pieces from the collection could be yours. We are giving a beautiful necklace from the SALOME Tribal collection to the winner of our competition. With a retail value of £95, this long length gold, fringed necklace features semiprecious blue aventurine stones, which are said to bring prosperity, good luck and self-confidence to the wearer.

To enter the competition to win the necklace, simply answer the following question. • When did Kellie found the SALOME jewellery brand? • Those not lucky enough to win, or who want to explore the full SALOME range – which also features precious gems such as ruby, sapphire, pearl, emerald and grey opal – can do so at www.salomedesigns.co.uk. Information can also be accessed via SALOME’s Instagram account (salome_ designs) while those who sign up to the website’s mailing list will be given advance notice about new designs and access to special offers. A WHISTLE-STOP TOUR OF SOUTH EAST ASIA “You’re so brave!” family and friends said, “I can’t believe you’re heading off to the other side of the world all by yourself,” and honestly? Neither could I. On a whim, after a year of asking friends to join me on the adventure of a lifetime, I booked my trip. I’d saved. They hadn’t. And I wasn’t going to let the concept of travelling alone hold me back… Fast forward to the morning at Newcastle Airport and not even an overpriced pint and mindless scrolling on social media could calm my nerves. I was heading to Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, and after 15 hours of flying and a pricey – £5.50 for a bottle of water pricey - two-hour layover in Dubai, I arrived in Bangkok – an

overwhelming city of sights, such as entire families on scooters, sky high buildings, exquisite, multi-floored shopping malls and beautiful, ornate temples.

A lot less touristy than its Thai sister,

Wanting to make the most of my three days in Thailand, I ventured off to the Bridge Over The River Kwai at Kanchanaburi for a ride on the death railway, saw Buddhist monks at one of Bangkok’s oldest and largest temples, Wat Pho – where the 150ft reclining Buddha lays, had a traditional Thai massage, ate Pad Thai whilst drinking a bottle of Chang, rode in the back of a colourfully lit tuk-tuk, and joined spectators to watch an American fellow eat a cockroach. As you do…

amount of killing fields, landmine

The next place on the whistle-stop tour was Cambodia – starting in the city of Siem Reap: home to the largest religious monument in the world, Angkor Wat. Also home to the kindest and most attentive people you will (probably) ever meet. 20 | Middlesbrough Today

Cambodia is a country still rebuilding from the atrocities of the 1970s Khmer Rouge regime where almost two million Cambodians died. The country’s mass victims and war museums highlight this, and although a sombre reminder, these places are a must-visit. The rest of my time in Siem Reap and the country’s capital, Phnom Penh, was spent exploring the Buddhist and Hindu temples at Angkor Wat – including the Tomb Raider temple, Ta Prohm, tasting traditional Khmer food, sailing through the floating villages, buying multiple $1 souvenirs from adorable street children and visiting the Daughters of Cambodia visitor centre in Phnom Penh – a place helping women and girls escape sex trafficking rings, by giving them a job where they can learn new skills and grow.

The final part of my itinerary was Vietnam – one of the most beautiful countries I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. Starting in Ho Chi Minh City – better known as Saigon – I started my Vietnam adventure 52 floors up with a long island iced tea in hand, at the city’s EON Heli Bar. Though a little pricey, the 360 view of the city was completely worth it. As I was meeting a friend from home, my time in Saigon was a little less cultural but an experience all the same.

I spent my days riding on the back of a scooter as we weaved through the chaotic traffic, trying to eat Beef Pho (a soupy delicious noodle dish) with chopsticks before giving up and using a fork, watching a group of new friends eat Quail’s foetus as a bar snack and shopping in the famous Ben Thanh market. Next and final stop was the country’s capital, Hanoi – with an additional day trip to UNESCO heritage site, Halong Bay, where I spent the entire day kayaking through the bay and exploring the caves. One word: amazing.

Hanoi’s highlights include Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum, watching a water puppet theatre show, seeing the many street performances down the Hoan Kiem lake boulevard and visiting the Vietnamese Women’s Museum - which was incredibly inspiring. After six plane journeys, five cities, four new friends for life, three countries and two many cocktails, my South East Asia trip was over, but I came away with one adventure of a lifetime.
