MELA HEADING ‘HOME’ TO ALBERT PARK FOR 2018 MIDDLESBROUGH’S Mela has a new team – and their first decision is to take the multicultural extravaganza home for 2018. Now in its 28th year, Mela will be hosted in Albert Park instead of Centre Square for the first time in seven years with work set to start this summer on the city centre Grade A office development.

Bran Sands site Mayor Ben Houchen has met Treasury minister Robert Jenrick to call for Government backing for a multibillion pound mine project essential to the Tees Valley economy. Sirius Minerals’ Woodsmith Mine will see polyhalite mined in North Yorkshire and marketed internationally. A naturally occurring and multi-nutrient fertiliser, polyhalite is coveted by farmers around the world to help increase yields. The firm will complete its second stage funding of up to $3billion later this year and a Treasury Guarantee will form an important part of the overall deal. The Government scheme was set up following the 2008 financial crisis to make sure that important infrastructure projects could access the capital they need. The call comes just weeks after Sirius completed its purchase of a 284-acre site at Bran Sands. The site is adjacent to the South Tees Development Corporation, a 4,500-acre area that is the biggest industrial investment opportunity in the UK. Chaired by Mayor Ben Houchen, the Development Corporation has a vision to create 20,000 jobs over the next 25 years. Once extracted at Woodsmith Mine, polyhalite would be taken to the business’s Tees Valley facility for global export from Teesside. The whole operation will create more than 2,500 jobs and £2.5billion of annual exports at full production. Ahead of his meeting with Mr Jenrick, Exchequer Secretary for the Treasury, Mayor Houchen wrote to Chancellor Philip Hammond re-emphasising

his support for the “transformative economic impact” the mine project would have on the North-east economy. He went on to highlight the importance of the scheme to the Tees Valley and the “unparalleled opportunity” of the Development Corporation, inviting Mr Hammond to Tees Valley to visit the development. Mayor Houchen said: “Sirius Minerals’ project is the single largest private investment in the North right now and undoubtedly one of national importance. Thousands of jobs will be created and the Tees Valley stands to benefit enormously. “Sirius Minerals’ decision to purchase Bran Sands and more recently its material handling facility site at Wilton represents a huge vote of confidence in our area and our workforce. It is a move that will deliver real, visible results very soon and provide a solid basis for further expansion in the future. “However for the project to proceed, this game-changing development needs the ongoing and full backing from Government. I am encouraged by the progress made to date and the supportive role the Infrastructure Projects Authority can provide to infrastructure projects of this kind. “There is a very compelling case for their involvement. Sirius has put their faith in Teesside’s economy, and I look forward to working with government to bring this project to life so that the company can continue to create jobs for local people.”

The event will take place this year on Saturday, August 11, and Sunday, August 12. Mela now has a new committee led by co-chairs Naveed Hussain and Zafar Uddin who both serve as councillors on Middlesbrough Council. Naveed said: “Middlesbrough Mela is back for its 28th year and coming back to its home of Albert Park. “Albert Park will bring back wonderful memories for many of our audience who have grown up with the event taking place in the beautiful Victorian park. “With great support out from Middlesbrough Council, we’re once again looking forward to a fantastic celebration of multicultural music, food, fashion and art. “We now have an exciting challenge ahead of us, but I am confident we can look forward to welcoming record crowds again.” Joining Naveed and Zafar in the new committee, are Secretary Linda Lewis, Treasurer Kash Patel and fellow new members Matt Storey, Junior Masandi, Beverley Bodden, James Beighton and Navdeep Murbay. Kash added: “Middlesbrough Mela’s heritage dates back many years and after a six-year break from Albert Park, I’m delighted to see it return there. As stage manager I feel the park is a fantastic venue for live performers as acoustically it provides a great atmosphere.” The committee are now looking for sponsors, supporters and stall holders for this year’s event. Anyone interested in helping should contact Leanne Littlewood from Middlesbrough Council via Leanne_littlewood@middlesbrough. gov.uk. Middlesbrough Today | 5

YOUNG OFFICERS TAKE COUNCIL TO NATIONAL FINALS RISING stars at Middlesbrough Council have represented the authority in a prestigious national competition.

For their pre-prepared argument about an issue of current interest or controversy, Charlotte and Jade chose to discuss equal rights and gender.

The Young Local Authority of the Year competition puts those in the early stages of their careers in local government in the spotlight.

The pair were also required to deliver a response to an on-the-spot question with no notes or prior preparation.

The competition was established in 2006, with this year’s event taking place in Lancaster. Middlesbrough was one of only two local authorities from the North East to be taking part, going head-to-head in good-natured competition with 37 other teams from across the UK. The Council was represented this year by Head of Culture Charlotte Nicol and Programme Office Co-ordinator Jade Stainthorpe. In preparation for the big event the pair gave presentations to the Council’s Leadership Management Team and members of the Executive. At the finals, each team was invited to introduce themselves and give a presentation on Pride of Place.

NEW DESTINATION TOURISM SERVICE LAUNCHED An exciting new tourism service which promotes Tees Valley as a world-class destination has been launched recently, by the Combined Authority with a wide range of partners, to coincide with English Tourism week. A dedicated destination and marketing website, tourism service and brand – Enjoy Tees Valley – aim to boost the visitor economy and help tourists and residents experience the best of the region as it gears up to launch its bid for UK City of Culture 2025. Tees Valley attracts as many day visitors as Newcastle and Gateshead, but it lags behind in overnight stays and national profile, and has been without a destination tourism service for a number of years. Enjoy Tees Valley aims to attract more than 20million people and add £1billion to the local economy per year by 2021 – creating 3,000 new jobs.

Jade said: “We were both really proud to represent Middlesbrough, and we’re grateful to everyone at the Council and those involved with organising the event for the opportunity and for all the encouragement along the way. “I think we gave a good performance on the day, but sadly the London Borough of Redbridge rose above the rest to claim this year’s award. “It’s been a great experience, and we’ve learned a lot and met some great people from other local authorities.” Councillor Mick Thompson, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Culture and Communities, said: “In Middlesbrough we take great pride in our mix of experience and upand-coming talent.

“The town is entering a fascinating chapter in its history, and if we are to continue to be progressive and forward-looking it’s vital that we develop and nurture the people who will shape the town’s future. “As part of that process the Young Local Authority of the Year competition is a fantastic opportunity for young people to gain new communication skills, and network with counterparts from other local authorities. “Charlotte and Jade have done themselves proud, and I’m grateful to them for helping to spread the word about Middlesbrough.”

Enjoy Tees Valley’s website (www. enjoyteesvalley.com) provides many more suggestions for great things to do and allows users to search for places to stay, find out what’s on, choose the best places to eat and drink, be inspired by itineraries, take advantage of special offers and build a personalised visit planner. Mayor Houchen added: “English Tourism Week is the perfect time to launch Enjoy Tees Valley and shout about what our region has to offer.

Mini Mimas with parents and carers outside the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art “It’s time to showcase all that we are proud of, throw open our arms and invite the world Rachel Dodd, director of Stockton-based RiverShack to see our world-class attractions for themselves boat hire, said: “Enjoy Tees Valley is a fantastic idea ahead of launching our UK City of Culture bid in that will really help organisations such as ours to 2021. thrive. more jobs. Our fantastic arts, culture and leisure offerings, as well as our rich heritage, play a huge role in helping it expand. “With Enjoy Tees Valley leading the charge by positioning us as an attractive place to live, work and visit, this growth will be supercharged.”

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “From our industrial skyline to our stunning rolling countryside, each town and village that makes up the Tees Valley is rich with local culture, heritage and attractions. We are passionate about our home, and with the new Enjoy Tees Valley brand, we can capitalise on our strengths and ensure that visitors to the area get to sample more and experience more.”

Dave Budd, Mayor of Middlesbrough and Tees Valley Combined Authority cabinet member for culture said: “Enjoy Tees Valley is just the beginning of our work to develop and promote tourism. Our area has great potential to appeal to a wide range of audiences and the website showcases the staggering range of things to do and see in the region.

Research has shown Middlesbrough’s Institute of Modern Art (mima), Stockton’s Butterfly World, Hartlepool’s Maritime Experience, Kirkleatham Museum in Redcar and Darlington’s South Park are high on visitors’ to-do lists.

“There is everything from surfing and white water rafting to walking and cycling. You can visit beautiful countryside and experience world-class arts and culture. We are calling on everyone to get involved and tell the world about our brilliant attractions.”

Charlotte Nicol (L) and Jade Stainthorpe who represented Middlesbrough at the finals of the 2018 Young Local Authority of the Year competition

“Since 2014 we’ve tried relentlessly to promote the area, increase visitor numbers to the River Tees and local attractions, plus make the case for improved investment in much-needed infrastructure. We’re just one voice - however by working together we can now make a much larger splash.” Michael Janes, Tees Valley branch Chair for the Federation of Small Businesses, said: “I have been working alongside businesses for years to keep stressing the outstanding tourism experiences on offer across our region. Now I couldn’t be happier to be an advocate for Enjoy Tees Valley. “This service will give the sector a shot in the arm and bolster small businesses who rely on the benefits visitors bring. It will make it easier than ever to find out about the latest events and get the most out of our area.” Business owners can get involved by emailing hello@enjoyteesvalley.com

NEW SITE HELPS TO BRIDGE GAPS TO FUTURE CAREERS A NEW website that enables students to showcase their skills to employers and educational institutes has been launched in Middlesbrough. globalbridge is an online platform that adds a more personal touch to career opportunities through the use of multimedia. The website is now being used by Post-16 students at Macmillan Academy, following a recent launch, allowing them to use videos and soundbites to engage with potential employers, training providers and further and higher education institutes. The initiative has been funded by Middlesbrough Achievement Partnership (MAP) to help bridge the widening gaps between employer needs and student skills. MAP works alongside schools and other partners to remove barriers to learning and supporting children and young people to have the best life chances. As well as traditional information found on a CV, globalbridge allows students to showcase their abilities using a portfolio of videos, images and soundbites, as well as identifying

career aspirations and preferred routes into employment, eg apprenticeships, graduate schemes etc. Grades alone are not always a key identifier of talent, and globalbridge helps employers match grades with more character-driven attributes, as well as offering opportunities to those who might not have an academic portfolio. Macmillan Academy Careers Practitioner Cath Cook said: “This is an exciting and unique opportunity for our students. “globalbridge embraces the changing way recruiters are now looking for employees. “It reflects the increasing mobility of our students and accepts the exacting demands from employers. “It also encourages young people to advertise their talents and be advocates for their own career exploration.” globalbridge founder Ben Mason added: “We are excited to be working with such an innovative school as Macmillan Academy. “They have a fantastic careers programme in place and we hope to enhance this by providing Higher Education and Career opportunities for students across the whole school as they progress through and beyond Macmillan Academy.”

and Skills, said: “Middlesbrough Achievement Partnership supports our young people to ensure they have the best possible start in life, both at school and beyond. “globalbridge is an important strand of their careers and employability work, with a highly innovative approach to matching the right students to the right employers. “This initiative has the potential to change and shape lives, and I will follow its progress with great interest.” Any employer interested in taking part in the globalbridge initiative should contact MAP Manager Clare Elliott by email at clare_elliott@middlesbrough.gov.uk or call 01642 729285.

J&B Recycling celebrates 20th anniversary with £1.3m investment A Tees Valley recycling firm has celebrated the beginning of its 20th anniversary with a series of investments totalling £1.3m. J&B Recycling, which processes commercial and industrial materials from South Teesside at its waste transfer station on Dockside Road in Middlesbrough, has rolled out an £800,000 plant upgrade and made further investments into machinery and its vehicle fleet across its three sites totalling a further £500,000. The two-phase plant upgrade, that was completed in January, not only allows the company to take an additional 11,000 tonnes of waste per year but also allows J&B to continue complying with strict overseas regulations and ensures it is prepared for the future. Vikki Jackson-Smith, Managing Director at J&B Recycling said: “The significant investments we have made to the business have been key drivers in J&B’s strategy for continued growth and sustainability, allowing us not only give comfort to our customers but to also increase our efficiency, flexibility and prepare for any future changes in the market. “The investment will also massively support our continuing goal of maximum efficiency and high quality levels of service when working with our customers, especially in

updates to our new vehicle fleet. Just last year we reported that 98% of our collections were on time when analysed over six months and this year we want to further improve on that already high percentage.” Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen, who visited J&B for J&B’s Managing Director, Vikki Jackson Smith, with the Tees a first look at the new plant, Valley Mayor Ben Houchen. was incredibly impressed by the quality and passion of the business. Vikki added: “It was great for Ben to come He said: “Over the past 20 years, J&B Recycling has gone from strength to strength. Their drive for success is shown in their adaptability and willingness to take advantage of every opportunity that comes their way. “It’s wonderful to see such business growth and investment into the Tees Valley. Their commitment to the region combined with their expansion is great news for the firm and our area. “I very much look forward to working with J&B Recycling in the future and eagerly await hearing about their next achievement.”

and visit and see what a thriving business we are in the region especially when we are just beginning our 20th anniversary celebrations. “Since our last major expansion back in 2009, the make-up of material we receive has changed dramatically and the new plant has been designed to add flexibility to our operations. Vikki concluded: “We have a strong line of development capital funding from the Business Growth Fund (BGF) that we acquired back in 2014.The fund has a figure of £2.6 billion of development capital, and we are not limited to how much of that we can access.” Middlesbrough Today | 7

MIDDLESBROUGH RAIL STATION MASTERPLAN UNVEILED

Additionally, direct trains to London are due to begin from Middlesbrough in 2020. Middlesbrough Mayor Dave Budd said: “Middlesbrough Railway Station is at the heart of our historic quarter and a central part of Middlesbrough Council’s investment plans to grow the local economy in line with our city scale ambitions. “These proposals would make our iconic station even more attractive and also make better use of the space inside. Clearly, we are at an early stage, but it is wonderful to be able to make our ambitions public. The projects programme board will now begin action on how we can collaboratively work together to achieve this.”

A MASTERPLAN to develop the historic Middlesbrough Railway Station into a destination fit for a city – and described as a “game changer” - is unveiled today. The concept – which offers short term proposals and a longer term vision – includes: • The re-opening of the southern entrance. • A stunning new glass frontage and concourse on Bridge Street. • An additional platform. • New commercial units. • Additional passenger facilities and;

• Improved access for sustainable modes of transport such as buses, taxis, cars and cycles. All of the ongoing design work also aims to protect, enhance and complement the station’s Victorian heritage, beauty and splendour. The proposals are the result of a commission - led by Middlesbrough Council with support from Network Rail, Tees Valley Combined Authority and the rail franchisees – to provide a longterm vision for the rail station and the surrounding area. As a result of the commission, Middlesbrough Council and Middlesbrough MP Andy McDonald are working alongside the rail industry in the form of a joint programme board to realise both the site’s ambition and strategic potential over the coming years.

A vision for the future of Middlesbrough Railway Station has been launched. Pictured on the north side of the station with an artist’s impression is Middlesbrough MP Andy McDonald (L) and Middlesbrough Mayor Dave Budd (R).

8 | Middlesbrough Today

It will build upon work which is shortly to be complete in the form of Network Rail’s station renewals project that will see the completion of a 13 month, £3m project to repair the roof and stonework of the main station building.

Mr McDonald said: “The Consultants BDP have done some stunning visionary work that not only sees the station restored to its 19th century splendour including the southern Zetland Road elevation and the improved usage of the concourse and booking hall - much as the architect originally intended when the station as first designed- but transformationally presents a 21st century northern façade out onto Bridge Street that fits entirely with our European City aspirations and opens out into the emerging cityscape of Middlehaven. It’s an absolutely breathtakingly impressive proposal.

“What the entire proposal presents is a 21st century transport hub that is fit for purpose. This will be a game changer for Middlesbrough and the wider Tees Valley economy. “So I heartily congratulate Middlesbrough Council, the Mayor Dave Budd his fellow Councillors and the superb officers who have driven this initiative forward and for the commitment that the Council has made to secure the achievements to date.”

TRIED AND TESTED

Buttermilk Caramel Sea Salt Egg

It wouldn’t be spring without Easter eggs and with so many to choose from, finding the right egg can be a tough decision. To save you having to go on your very own Easter egg hunt, Bronia McGregor has tried and tested a selection of our favourites.

Wilko, Elizabeth Shaw Mint Collection Easter Egg

The first thing that strikes you about this egg is its appearance. Decorated with butterscotch chips, it adds an element of indulgence that makes it stand out from the other chocolate eggs on the shelf. And this is the egg that keeps on giving, because when you crack it open you find a bag of buttery caramel sea salt fudge inside that melts in your mouth. Price £11.99

Tesco, HARIBO Chick ‘n’ Mix

Honeycomb crisp adds a welcome crunch to this mint chocolate egg. Rich dark chocolate blends seamlessly with the mint and there are even 12 mint dark chocolates inside as an added bonus.

If chocolate eggs aren’t your thing then this adorable Chick ‘n’ Mix box might just be the Easter treat you’ve been searching for. Filled with chewy bunny and lamb shaped jellies, tangy chicks, flower shaped marshmallows and even the favourite fried eggs from Starmix, these spring themed sweets are a perfect chocolate free treat. Carluccio’s Box of 4 Gianduja Eggs Packaged in a plastic egg box, Carluccio’s is offering a quirky twist on the Easter egg. Oxfam, Divine Luxury Dark Egg with Salted Caramel Mini Eggs Made from organically farmed cocoa beans, the hollow egg is made with smooth dark chocolate and comes with salted caramel mini eggs - the perfect sweet and savoury flavour combination. The packaging is made from recycled cardboard with no plastic, so you rest assured that you’re doing a good deed for the environment at the same time. Price £10 10 | Middlesbrough Today

Holland and Barrett, Cocoa Libre Dairy Free Chicks Not quite an egg but these chocolate chicks are another option for those with a dairy free diet. Made from creamy rice milk, these sweet chocolate treats look cute and taste great too. Price £4.69

Hotel Chocolat, Extra Thick Champagne Egg

Tesco Finest Gin and Elderflower Egg

This egg may be more on the expensive end of the Easter egg spectrum but it’s not hard to see why. The extra thick shell is made with half creamy milk chocolate and half strawberry-white and milk chocolate to create a stunning finish. Champagne and pink champagne truffles filled with real French Mercier Champagne add an extra element of luxury to this egg. Price £27

Why choose between milk and dark chocolate when you can have both? This stylish egg looks so good you won’t want to crack it. Chocolate infused with gin and elderflower adds a touch of sophistication to the classic Easter egg and it comes with six delicious gin and elderflower truffles that you won’t want to share. Price £10

Hotel Chocolat, Sunny Side Up Easter Truffles If you’re looking for something different to the hollow eggs on offer then these expressive truffles might just tick the box. With four different flavours – chocolate and cream, caramel and roasted pecan praline, whipped cream and Madagascan vanilla and a smooth hazelnut praline - these creamy chocolates certainly give the traditional Easter eggs a run for their money. £8

SUMMER OF MUSIC Bronia McGregor takes a look at everything there is to look forward to when Hardwick Live returns later this year and Every Day I Love You Less and Less, as well as tracks from the bands most recent album. And because double the days means double the performances, music fans will be treated to a second headliner on the Sunday alternative rock band, the Happy Mondays. Formed in the 1980’s in Manchester, the internationally acclaimed Happy Mondays will take to the stage to perform some of their major hits such as Step On, Kinky Afro and 24 Hour Party People. Also headlining on the Sunday are 90’s Britpop band, Shed Seven, who last year released their first studio album in more than a decade.

Grab your wellies, a pair of sunglasses and a tent, because the North East’s hottest live music event is back this summer – and it’s bigger than ever before. Hardwick Live Festival will return in August and this year the star-studded performances will take place from Saturday 18 to Sunday 19 – with the festival being extended across two days for the very first time. So music fans rejoice, because that means that twice as many acts will be taking to the festival stage, which takes place on the grounds of Hardwick Hall, Sedgefield. Headlining the festival on the Saturday are indie favourites, the Kaiser Chiefs, headed up by frontman and former The Voice UK judge, Ricky Wilson. Fans of the multi award-winning band can enjoy live performances of the Kaiser Chiefs’ best known hits, including Ruby, I Predict a Riot

John Adamson, owner of Ramside Estates which runs Hardwick Live Festival, is delighted with the line-up. “We had an amazing year last year which is why we have decided to go for two full days this year,” he said. “The acts are amazing and we should be adding other names as time goes on. “It absolutely will be a year to remember.” Other confirmed big name acts on the jampacked line-up include Feeder, Public Image Ltd, Echo & The Bunnymen, Melanie C and Heather Small. Hardwick Live is also boasting an impressive DJ line-up this year, with a number of wellknown names taking to the decks over the weekend. Those attending will be able to enjoy music from Danny Rampling, Graeme Park, Greg Wilson, Brandon Block, Alex P, Linden C, James Parker, Tony Hutchinson, Steve Butler, Michael Johnson, Peter Wharrier and Rob Oxley.

And in between acts, festival-goers will be able to keep themselves entertained with a whole host of activities and events that are taking place across the site. Fairground rides, a food village, a comedy tent and a silent disco are just some of the activities that people can make the most of over the weekend. As well as the food village, this year Hardwick Live will be offering something a little different to the food many expect at festivals – by hosting a unique dining experience prepared by celebrity chefs. Tickets for Hardwick Live 2018 are now on sale, priced at £49 for one day or £89 for both. Concessions are available for children and 13-17-year-olds. There are both camping and glamping options available for those who wish to immerse themselves in the complete festival experience. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.hardwicklive.co.uk.

Lambing Live returns with an extra special new arrival this year Lambing Live is returning to RSPB Saltholme this Easter and there’s even more reason to celebrate than usual, with special new arrivals expected at the reserve courtesy of Saltholme’s beloved Moo the sheep. Moo – a firm favourite with Saltholme’s visitors – was born shortly after the spate of dog attacks at the nature reserve in 2015/16 which led to the death of 50 sheep. Moo’s mum was injured but survived and went on to give birth to Moo –aptly named after her cow-like markings. Moo is now expecting and is giving birth to her first lamb (or lambs) during this year’s Lambing Live event. Lambing Live, running from 30 March – 15 April, is gearing up to be even bigger and better than before. RSPB Salthome near Stockton-on-Tees will welcome thousands of visitors during the event to see its newborn lambs and take part in a fun-filled events programme. As well as visiting the newborns in the lambing shed, visitors can hold baby chicks – a first for the reserve - create finger puppet arts and crafts and take part in a special adventure quest across the nature reserve to win a certificate. Games and activities including giant jenga, hoops and bowling are available throughout the Lambing Live event, and the site is running Gator rides over the Easter weekend. Aimee Lee, Visitor Experience Manager at RSPB Saltholme, said: “Lambing Live has traditionally always been one of our biggest crowd draws but we have even more reason to celebrate this year, thanks to the fantastic news about Moo. All of the lambs delivered at

Saltholme are special, but I think there will be a few tears as we welcome her new arrivals. “Spring is a great time of year at the reserve and we’re excited to mark the start of the season with a wide range of fun, family activities” The wider nature reserve will also be open as usual to the public during Lambing Live, so visitors can access the stunning habitats and wetlands. Aimee added: “All of the team are eager for this year’s event to begin, there really is a buzz in the atmosphere. We’re looking forward to welcoming both our returning visitors and those experiencing all the excitement of Saltholme for the very first time.” Throughout the 2018 Lambing Live event, the reserve entrance fee is reduced by 50% to £2.50 per car (no cost for those travelling by public transport and free for RSPB members).

payable on the day– the pass includes; access to the lambing shed to see the new arrivals, chick activities and chick handling in the Visitor Centre, finger puppet arts and crafts, an exciting adventure quest with certificate, plus activities on the events field including giant jenga, bowling and hoops. Accompanying adults go free with a paying child, and adults wishing to visit the lambing shed without children can do so for £1.The Gator Rides running across the Easter weekend only will be subject to a small additional charge.

RSPB Saltholme is open every day (except Christmas Day) and is open 9.30am-4pm. From 1 April, the reserve will be open until 5pm.

To join in all the fun Saltholme is offering Lambing Live children’s activity passes at £5 per child which are Middlesbrough Today | 17

WIN A TUDOR TREAT AT LUMLEY CASTLE…

This month we have a Tudor treat in store for one lucky reader - at one of the North East’s best loved venues. On selected dates each month four-star Lumley Castle Hotel, Chester-le-Street, turns back the clock to 1595, with its famous banquets - giving diners and partygoers a fun-filled night, Elizabethan-style. On arrival at the castle guests are led to the dungeons before being piped into the opulent Baron’s Hall and seated on benches for dinner, which is served by Ladies of the Court and eaten with a dagger instead of cutlery. To accompany dishes, such as sticky pork ribs and honey-baked chicken, diners are served red wine and mead in earthenware goblets. Meanwhile, in between courses, the Castle’s Lord Chamberlain entertains diners with tales of yore and local legends – including the sorrowful story of Lily of Lumley who was thrown into the castle’s well by

priests and whose ghost has been seen by countless visitors and staff over the years. Throughout the evening the Lords and Ladies of the Court, dressed in period costume, perform sketches and a variety of songs, from traditional North East folk ballads to a rousing finale of more popular tunes, with diners encouraged to join in when they can. Finally, guests can round off the evening by dancing to a disco in the dungeon – or even extend the evening with an overnight stay in one of Lumley’s 73 bedrooms. To celebrate Lumley Castle’s 630th birthday this year, we are giving one lucky reader and their guest the chance to join the banquet and stay overnight with breakfast the following morning.

To be in with a chance of winning, just answer the following question: Lumley Castle overlooks which river:

a) The Tyne b) The Wear c) The Tees The prize can only be taken on nights when the Elizabethan banquet is held and is valid until 31 October 2018. Terms and conditions apply.

IT’S A COUNTRY OF MYSTERY AND SURPRISES – BERNICE SALTZER DISCOVERS THE TRUE FACE OF INDIA It was the television’s fault. Deciding on a holiday destination while you’re watching a tv show is bound to influence your decision. And so it was for my husband and I, having just viewed the highly entertaining The Real Marigold Hotel. “Let’s go to India,” I said. Fast forward a few months and here we were, boarding a plane for what we hoped would be an adventure of a lifetime. Because the country is so vast, it’s inevitable that – unless of course you’ve got the luxury of months of spare time – that you have to make a decision 20 | Middlesbrough Today

about where you’re going to visit. Inspird by the tv show, we headed for Kerala, the strip below Goa down the western coast of India which is known for its picturesque scenery and its breathtaking canals known as the backwaters. It’s a long trek from the North East – think Newcastle to Amsterdam to Mumbai to Cochin – but boy is it worth it. We spent our first three days in Cochin, home to the biggest shopping centre in the area, the Lulu mall. Although at first glance it may seem very westernised

with its gloss and familiar names, there are some very unusual aspects. Most restaurants are vegetarian or only offer chicken as the meat choice – hence you’ll find a McDonald’s with lots of veggie options on the menu. But who travels to go to chain store restaurants when there are so many other delights in store? The magnificent Chinese fishing nets – a feat of engineering – Fort Cochin with its amazing buildings and Jew Town with its 400 year old synagogue are just some of the sites to be seen. Wanting to see as much of the area as

we could, we made the wise decision to use an Indian tour company which not only booked our hotels along the way but also provided us with a driver for the duration of the trip. This is the way to see the real Kerala, because so many places are off the beaten track that without a car – and you certainly wouldn’t want to drive yourself- you simply couldn’t cover the country. First stop was to Munnar, travelling through lush forests with monkeys running across the road and only pausing to enjoy freshly cut pineapples at a farm. In the heart of tea plantation country, our destination was the amazing Chandy Windy Woods hotel, carved high out of a mountain and with its own “enchanted forest” running through the centre of the hotel.

It set the bar for what was to follow – the wonder of a night on a houseboat from Allepey around the backwaters, the joy of Thekkady and a visit to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in search of tigers, watching a mongoose run along the beach at the B’Canti Beach Resort at Varkala and being overawed by the majestic golden eagles swooping into the water to get fish at Trivandrum. India is a country of constant surprises and one where I put aside all my misconceptions. The people are warm and welcoming, the food is fantastic and in a world where so much is familiar, it is exciting and new. Put it on your travel list- you won’t be disappointed. • We travelled with KLM to India from Newcastle and booked our itinary, hotels and driver through Holidayz Mart – www.holidayzmart.com
