LOCALNEWS AWARD FOR LIFE-SAVING CERVICAL CANCER CAMPAIGN A CAMPAIGN to increase uptake of lifesaving cervical screening on Teesside has been honoured with an award from a national charity. Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland’s Joint Public Health Service have been commended by Jo’s Trust for their work so far in getting more women to access screening. The Cervical Screening Saves Lives campaign was originally launched in Middlesbrough due to screening uptake being below the national average.
Across South Tees, a vast range of community venues are engaged to promote the key messages including more than 90 salons, proactively promoting screening. There are currently 13 GP practices signed up as No Fear practices with a roll out to all practices across the area planned this year. As a result of the work Rob Music, Chief Executive of Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, visited some of the team involved at the Live Well Centre in Middlesbrough to present an award stating that Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland
Councils had been highly commended. He said: “We are delighted to hand over this award. It is a really impressive piece of work and we are already seeing some of the positive results in terms of encouraging women to go for cervical screening. “Ultimately this will save lives.”
Commuters in Middlesbrough racked up more than 4,500 miles in greener travel in May In May, staff from four large employers in Middlesbrough were given a five-day challenge to find and use a greener, healthier way to travel to and from work. The aim of the Commuter Challenge, which runs in rotation across the Tees Valley, is to reduce the number of single occupancy car journeys being done in the region, especially on local trips. Staff from Middlesbrough Council, The James Cook University Hospital, Teesside University and Chemoxy International
took part in the challenge run by Let’s Go Tees Valley. “The message is simple,” says Alex Kay from the Let’s Go Tees Valley team, “you can get to and from work without a car. If you drive, you don’t need to do it alone. “Around four out of five cars commuting to and from work have only one person in them, and almost half of car journeys are under two miles. Swapping the car for walking or cycling for shorter journeys can save you hundreds of pounds each year.”
The next Tees Valley Commuter Challenge will run in Stockton-onTees. Businesses that would like to get involved are asked to contact Alex Kay at Let’s Go Tees Valley on 01325 40 50 40 or visit www.letsgoteesvalley.co.uk.

BOLD AMBITION FOR COUNCIL TO DELIVER QUALITY AFFORDABLE HOUSING BOLD proposals have been unveiled which would see Middlesbrough Council building homes for the first time in a generation.
who are increasingly unable to afford to buy a property but do not want to rent the older terraced properties that are prevalent in the market.
If adopted, a housing delivery model would allow the Council to directly build houses, as well as giving the local authority greater control over development to focus on residents’ needs rather than being market driven.
Cllr Lewis Young, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Economic Development and Infrastructure, said: “Middlesbrough is currently witnessing city-scale developments – both Council and private sector-led – and the economic growth of the city centre needs to be backed up with a housing offer to match.
For the first time in decades Middlesbrough is experiencing population growth with people attracted to the growing economy. Although the growth seen to date has been hugely beneficial to the town, there is an affordability issue that is developing, highlighted in the report, as the average cost of new homes in the town rises beyond the means of many residents looking to get on the housing ladder. One significant gap identified is for professionals in the 25-35 age category
“We are making a bold statement on housing that we want to give people the good quality homes that are desired in all areas of Middlesbrough and we want to make sure that they are affordable. “We can make sure everyone has the opportunity to have the home they want to live in - the private sector is profit driven whereas our model will be people driven.”
Apprentices’ careers branch-off thanks to environmental scheme An environmental project is acting as a stepping stone to employment for many young people in Middlesbrough. Over the past two years One Planet Pioneers has engaged with over 1000 young people through apprenticeships, work experience, career workshops and volunteering activities. One Planet Pioneers, funded by the Big Lottery Fund through the Our Bright Future programme, is a collaboration between Middlesbrough Environment City (MEC), Actes Trust and Tees Valley Wildlife Trust, which aims to develop the skills of young people through environmental projects. The project currently works with 11 apprentices who are employed by project partners, the largest number to be engaged with the project at any one time. Twenty-one-year-old James Stubbs who undertook an apprenticeship with Middlesbrough Environment City between September 2016 and September 2017, working on One Planet Pioneers, is now
employed by the organisation as an Active Travel Trainer. During his apprenticeship he represented the project in the first Youth Forum in London, an experience that not only gave him a sense of responsibility, but which helped boost his confidence. James said: ‘’The opportunity to gain new skill and work experience during the apprenticeship was amazing, it has given me invaluable skill that I now use in my everyday life. One Planet Pioneers is one of 31 UK wide projects forming the Our Bright Future programme which is funded by the Big Lottery Fund. For more details or to register an interest in One Planet Pioneer activities call Nicky or Casper at Middlesbrough Environment City on 01642 579839/579832 or email Nicky at nicky. morgan@menvcity.org.uk

J&B celebrates double shortlisting for the National Recycling Awards 2018 Teesside based J&B Recycling is in line for a national award after being recognised for the exceptional work they deliver within the waste management industry. The well-established recycling company, which operates from a waste transfer site on Normandy Wharf in Middlesbrough, has been shortlisted for both Independent Operator of the Year and the Efficiency Award at the 2018 National Recycling Awards. The annual ceremony, which brings together over 650 recycling and waste management professionals at The Hilton on Park Lane in London, is recognised as being the most respected within the industry. J&B’s Managing Director, Vikki Jackson-Smith,
said: “To be shortlisted amongst some of the biggest names in the UK’s waste management sector is an amazing achievement for the business. The past financial year has been an exceptional year for J&B Recycling. With an abundance of major investments and record financial growth, coupled with efficiency processes that have been of massive benefit to the business.’’ The shortlisting has come just weeks after the company celebrated its 20th anniversary with a series of investments made to its plant, machinery and vehicle fleet, totalling £1.3m. “Myself and the team at J&B are incredibly proud of our existing position as the largest independent waste management firm in the North East of England. And national

recognition, as J&B Recycling celebrates its 20th year of trading, would be a real honour and privilege,’’ Vikki added. Over the past 12 months, J&B has won other prestigious awards in recognition of its hard work within the trade. Late last year the company was crowned ‘Recycling Firm of the Year’ by the International Corporate LiveWire Innovation & Excellence Awards 2018. With the capacity for the handling and sorting of up to 325,000 tonnes of waste per annum, the company achieved record growth for the financial year ending 2017, reporting a turnover of £15.7m.
Investigations clear the way for start of TeesAMP SITE investigations are under way on land where the new £55 million TeesAMP advanced manufacturing park will be located at Middlesbrough. TeesAMP will offer 180,000sq ft of high quality accommodation across ten buildings in its first phase, with potential for up to 1,000 new jobs. The work will look into ground conditions which may have been affected by the closeness of the river Tees and the site’s previous industrial use. Property developer Geoff Hogg, one of the people behind the plans, explained: “Parts of the site were reclaimed from the river and built up to form level land to build on.
“There were factory buildings used as the Newport Iron Works and Newport Dry Colour Works as well as railway sidings, off the Darlington and Saltburn Branch so we expect to find remnants of that bygone industrial era.” Middlesbrough Council is investing almost £12.5 million, with the authority giving the green light to the scheme in December last year. Middlesbrough Deputy Mayor and Executive Member for City Centre Strategy Councillor Charlie Rooney said: “This is the latest important stage in the creation of a major new addition to Middlesbrough’s economy, and that of the whole Tees Valley.
Richard Wilson of Dodds Brown, Geoff Hogg, of Cleveland Property Developments and Richard Brown of Dodds Brown.
“It’s great to see such a forward-thinking project gather momentum, and it’s a clear indication of the ambition we have for the future.”
Mayor meets Korean bosses behind Teesside’s £650 million power plant Mayor Ben Houchen has met leading business chiefs in South Korea and visited more international firms central to the Tees Valley economy on the final leg of his landmark East Asia trade mission. The Mayor visited household brand Samsung’s head office who own and have a base in Darlington at their Whessoe Engineering company. Whessoe Engineering is currently constructing the £650million MGT plant at the South Tees Development Corporation area. The biomass power station will be fuelled by wood chip and pellets and by around 2020 will generate electricity for the 6 | Middlesbrough Today
equivalent of 600,000 homes. Mayor Ben Houchen said: “These talks were hugely productive in forging deeper connections with Korean businesses that have done so much for the Tees Valley. These major companies are building and financing projects across our area, and I wanted to thank them for putting their faith in our economy and our workforce. “These firms want to invest more in the UK, and I took every opportunity to demonstrate why Tees Valley is the best place to live, work and invest.”

Tees Valley combined authority launches skills strategy A major education, employment and skills strategy has been launched by Tees Valley Combined Authority outlining the key issues, priorities and opportunities to fill the 133,000 jobs that will be available in the region by 2024. Titled Inspiring Our Future, the strategy is the first to offer a joined-up approach between education, employment and skills agendas to help retain, develop and recruit the talent Tees Valley requires for future economic growth. Working with key partners and businesses, Inspiring Our Future will focus on supporting innovation and collaboration in education, transforming careers and enterprise education, develop a skills
system for business growth, address longterm unemployment and enhance the role of higher education in driving economic growth. The strategy is as a result of Tees Valley’s Devolution Deal with Government, which gives the region greater control over local decision-making powers and funding. Paul Booth, chair of the Tees Valley Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “This strategy has the potential to transform how we do business in Tees Valley. By helping companies spot the workers they need, and find ways of filling those gaps, we can strengthen local industry for years to come. “This plan will inspire young people and help adults and the long-term unemployed
Appeal launched to acquire rare Cook artefact A FUND-raising appeal is being launched to acquire a rare Captain Cook artefact for Middlesbrough. The 18th Century japanned tea tray features a depiction of the legendary explorer’s death painted by Edward Bird RA. It’s now on sale – and the Cook Birthplace Trust is appealing for donations to help it meet the £34,500 asking price to return it to its former home. The tray – a rendering of George Carter’s 1781 painting of the scene - dates from the 1790s and was presented to Middlesbrough founding father Henry Bolckow in the 1850s or 1860s. Following his death, the collection was sold with the death scene tray eventually finding its way into one of Australia’s most significant private collections of Captain Cook material
which has now been put up for sale. Councillor Tom Mawston, Chair of the Cook Birthplace Trust, said: “2018 marks the 250th anniversary of the first of James Cook’s three famous voyages to the Pacific. “There remains huge local pride in the achievements of a man who pushed back the boundaries of the known world, and we are determined to develop and expand our celebration of one of history’s towering figures. “It would be fantastic if we were able to return it to the site of his birth for future visitors to enjoy – I would urge anyone with any interest in our local heritage and history to help us reach our fund-raising target.” For further details visit www.gofundme. com/captain-james-cook-artefact-return
£30.5Million adult education budget set to be devolved to the tees valley Tees Valley Combined Authority has agreed a move to secure an indicative £30.5million per year in Government funding for adult education in the region. The Adult Education Budget will be devolved from central Government from August 2019 to support learners aged 19 and over. Devolution of the budget allows the Mayor and Cabinet to target funds where they are most needed, to provide skills training, help local people back to work and nurture home-grown talent. The move comes just weeks after Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen launched TeesValleyCareers.com, which aims to directly connect the 100,000 young people in the region to more than 1,000 businesses. TeesValleyCareers.com is the first of its kind in the UK and, like the delivery of the Adult Education Budget, will help to ensure people in the area have the experience, skills,
confidence and understanding they need to succeed while allowing employers to fill skills gaps and flourish. Mayor Houchen said: “From next year, we will control a £30 million annual fund to improve post-19 education across the Tees Valley. We are only getting control of this fund because our region agreed to a directlyelected Mayor. This is yet another example of devolution working for our area. Cllr Christopher Akers-Belcher, Tees Valley Combined Authority Cabinet Lead for Education, said: “This is another key plank in our strategy to make sure everybody in the Tees Valley has every chance to access high-quality learning, develop their skills and achieve their potential. “Helping adults back into the worlds of education and work will have a real, demonstrable effect on the Tees Valley, not least the wellbeing of our residents.”

back to work in a way which benefits us all. I’d encourage our firms to see what they can do to help deliver this strategy and what this programme can do for them.” To view the Education, Employment and Skills Strategy, Inspiring Our Future, visit teesvalleyca.gov.uk/SkillsStrategy

VANESSA SUPPORTS BODY POSITIVITY She’s been called the most hard working woman in radio, she’s renowned for her no nonsense approach – and now Vanessa Feltz tells Bernice Saltzer why she’s supporting the UK’s first Body Positive Awards. When you’ve made your name by being outspoken, it’s not exactly surprising that Vanessa Feltz has plenty to say about social media.
when we could be doing so many other things to spend our times saying we hate our body,” she said.
Digitally enhanced images are a massive no-no for the glamorous grandmother, who wants to get the message out that women should stop chasing “fake perfection” and instead concentrate on enjoying their lives.
“I love the Kardashians but we shouldn’t be spending our life chasing a dream of trying to look like one.
The renowned journalist claims that the constant desire to have a social mediaperfect body is causing a huge amount of stress for women of all ages. And now she is calling on women to “love who they are” and recognise that what they see on social media sites is not only unreal but unrealistic. Vanessa has spoken out after agreeing to host the UK’s first ever Body Positive Awards this summer (22 June) which are being organised by Ashleigh “Money Saver” Swan to champion the body positive activists and retailers who cater for those who aren’t standard sizes. Mum-of-three Ashleigh gained national attention after going online to post special offers and deals to help those who may not have a huge amount of spare cash and now her website offers a range of different options, including her own Ashleigh Plus Size section. For Vanessa, focusing on a body positive message is extremely important. “I just feel it is a terrible waste of life
“It’s crazy that we see these images that we know have been manipulated and are the result of make-up artists, hairdressers and a whole team of people, while deep down we know that people don’t really look like that. “We should all embrace who we are, recognise that we’re all different. Yes, be healthy, be active but don’t spend your life trying to fulfil some impossible fantasy.” The broadcaster praised Ashleigh for putting the awards together. “Thankfully these days there is a broad range of clothes available for women of all sizes and not just those that are just functional but which really embrace current trends. “Women should be colourful, be creative in what they wear and the awards will recognise retailers who offer the clothes to do that.” The broadcaster – who presents every day on BBC Radio 2 and Radio London – revealed that she is now happy with her body. “I’m only human so I do have days when I am not happy with myself,” she revealed.
“And I had a gastric band in 2010 so that does help check my weight but really to me it’s just about staying active and ensuring that I’m around as long as possible for my daughters and grandchildren.” Vanessa is hoping there will be massive support for the awards, which will culminate in a glamorous ceremony in London in June. Categories include the most engaging plus size blog, top plus size social influencer and leading body positivity campaigner. The awards will also honour the best value plus size range, top swimwear and lingerie for plus size, best footwear, top new retailer and best high street, independent and online retailers. The top body positive publication will also be among those celebrated, with the judges naming the plus size retailer of the year from the entrants across all categories. “Hopefully this will be the first of many Body Positivity awards and I’m looking forward to being a part of it,” she said. Further information is available from www.ashleighplussize.co.uk

The best designs will be placed on a giant edible map as part of the town’s first ever Cake Fest. The baking extravaganza is the latest event celebrating the re-opening of Middlesbrough Town Hall after its £7.7 million Arts Council England and Heritage Lottery Fund-supported makeover. Cake Fest is just that - a festival of cake which will bring up to 100 cake-based landmarks from around the region to Centre Square, on Sunday, July 1 But the ravenous get to admire and then devour a Newport Bridge sponge cake, a mima madeira or a Riverside Stadium roulade, someone has to bake the cakes.
“There are over 50 landmarks already available on the website, from Acklam Hall to Waterloo Road Mosque and everything in between,” said Rob Guest, Business Development Manager of Middlesbrough Town Hall.
There’s also a chance to get your creation featured in print as the Gazette will choose its Favourite Five creations, the winning bakers will be featured in the newspaper, on the website and who knows, maybe even catch the eye of Mary Berry!
“So, get online and reserve yours before someone beats you to it!
Cake Fest is just one part of Middlesbrough Town Hall’s brand-new food offering, with the hugely popular and well-loved Orange Pip Market looking to take up a more permanent residence in the Town Hall café.
“Then simply start planning your bake, Simon will be offering advice and tips on social media. “If your favourite Middlesbrough landmark isn’t on the list, let us know!” The grand unveiling of Cake Fest Middlesbrough will take place on Sunday, July 1 in Centre Square outside Middlesbrough Town Hall. The fully edible landscape will be modelled under cover, and the plan is for bakers to arrive throughout the day, carefully transporting their creations to add to the delicious Middlesbrough masterpiece.
Bringing local landmarks to life in cake
“That’s where the public come in,” says Simon Preston, presenter of BBC Kitchen Café and creator of Cake Fest. “Cake Fest is all about the joy of baking and celebrating this amazing town! “Whether you’re a seasoned cake-maker or you’ve never picked up a wooden spoon in your life, we’re looking for people with a sense of adventure to help us create a giant edible map of Middlesbrough. “You can bake on your own, with friends, colleagues or even as a company. “Everyone is welcome to take part and I’ll advise and guide our community of bakers throughout the entire process.” Cake Fest is open to everyone and entirely free to enter, so if applying some creativity to cakes sounds like fun, then this is the perfect opportunity to hone those skills. Would-be bakers are asked to visit www. cakefestmiddlesbrough.co.uk and reserve a landmark.
Once the map has been completed, and people have had the chance to marvel at it, the cake buildings will be sliced up and shared with visitors to Cake Fest. Bringing a little funk to the festivities will be Back Chat Brass, who have quickly established themselves as one of the UK’s leading street bands since bursting onto the scene in 2016. Covering everything from Beyoncé and Bieber to Hall and Oates, they will be performing two sets on top of the Big Brass Bus to keep everyone entertained as the culinary map takes shape. And if you’re not content with just listening to the music, there will also be an opportunity to get a little more hands-on with the Back Chat boys hosting a free one-hour workshop in the Town Hall Crypt. So, if you’ve ever fancied playing the trombone or trumpet, or even being a member of a street band, this is your chance – simply visit the Town Hall website to find out how to get involved.
Commercial Events and Sales Manager Keren Pearson said: “We are working with Orange Pip to develop the Orange Pip Kitchen. “It will be a place that supports independent restaurants, foodies, cooks and chefs, and in a unique twist, we’ll present our Chefs in Residence programme. “We’re very close to being able to reveal who our first resident chef will be, and we will be open for the first time to the public during Cake Fest itself!” Middlesbrough Town Hall reopened on Tuesday, May 1 to a sold-out auditorium there to see the Bruckner Linz Orchestra and later this month, Southpaw Dance known for their original, lively and audience pleasing performances, will perform Erimus, which takes its inspiration from Middlesbrough town’s motto, We Shall Be. The late bank holiday weekend will see five performances of the piece, which promises to be an event to remember, as the dancers will move around the Town Hall and will comprise hundreds of local volunteers! It is entirely free of charge to attend and tickets can be booked on the Middlesbrough Town Hall website. The Gables Care Home BELOVED characters from The Wizard of Oz joined residents at The Gables Care Home for an interactive screening of the 1939 classic movie musical. The Tin Man, Scarecrow, Lion and the Wizard all made appearances, leading a chorus of residents and staff singing along with the movie’s star Judy Garland. Over the Rainbow, Follow the Yellow Brick Road and We’re Off To See The Wizard, were just some of the numbers that had everyone joining in. Home manager Kate Charlton dressed as the Wizard, resident Harriet Kidd as the Lion, activities coordinator Cath Taylor as the Scarecrow, and care assistant Farah Brannigan as the Tin Man for the event. The sing-a-long cinema was part of National Care Home Open Day activities taking place in Hill Care Group homes across Teesside, including at the The Gables Care Home, on Highfield Road, in Middlesbrough. The home runs a wide-range of activities throughout the year to keep residents entertained and active.
Alongside marking all national holidays, from Easter to Christmas, the home also welcomes community groups, visits local attractions and engages in partnerships with schools and youth initiatives. Kate Charlton has recently been promoted to home manager, having worked at the home for nine years as a nurse and three years as deputy manager. She said: “Our core role as a care home is to ensure our residents are happy, comfortable, cared for and fulfilled. That means providing first-class, person-centred care as well as ensuring they have a wide-range of activities and events to participate in and look forward to. “A tailored mixture of planned daily routines alongside stimulating, positive experiences for the residents and their families is absolutely vital and something we look to provide for everyone who resides with us.”
The Gables Care Home offers 64 en-suite rooms for nursing, residential, respite, palliative and day care. The home also provides a caring unit dedicated to the needs of those with dementia. SUMMER OF ENTERTAINMENT Bronia McGregor looks at why there is no need to go any further than our very own region to find an array of events this summer…
The sun is finally starting to make an appearance which can only mean one thing - summer is just around the corner. The warmer months are a fantastic time to be in the North East because the region comes alive with events, ranging from brass bands to street parades to chart-topping performers. An event that encapsulates all three of these things and more is the South Tyneside Festival, with a variety of musical events and family activities happening at venues all over South Shields. One of the highlights of the festival is the annual Summer Parade, which
falls on 30 June this year, where hundreds of youth groups, schools and community organisations will get into the spirit of this year’s theme – monsters, myths and magic. An array of colourful costumes and creative floats will make their way through South Shields’ town centre and end at Bents Park, where visitors will be able to enjoy live music and fun for the whole family. Over the course of the festival there will be a range of musical performances for all tastes, with live music at the Sandhaven Amphitheatre every Thursday and Saturday evening from 2 – 23 June and brass band concerts every Sunday afternoon from June through to August. And the extremely popular Sunday concerts will return to Bents Park throughout July, kicking off with pop princess Pixie Lott, supported by former JLS member, Aston Merrygold on 8 July and X Factor’s The Cutkelvins supporting boyband, The Vamps on 15 July.

On 22 July pop-rock band Scouting for Girls will take to the stage, supported by Eurovision favourites, The Fizz and 80s star, Roachford and then former M People singer, Heather Small and 90s girl band Atomic Kitten will close the concerts on 29 July.
There is also something for the little ones at the South Tyneside Festival, with the Kids Fun-Fest at the amphitheatre every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 2 – 23 August, featuring games, entertainment and even a gunge tank. And Sunderland will see the Tall Ships Races coming to the city for the very first time this summer, from Wednesday 11 to Saturday 14 July. The magnificent fleet will bring with them four days of street theatre, food and refreshments, displays and live music in an event that is not to be missed. Visitors can expect to enjoy events like a Crew Parade weaving through the city centre on Thursday, bringing a carnival atmosphere to the streets before a prize-giving ceremony and a major artistic commission taking place on the riverside on Friday. Another sight not to be missed is a spectacular Parade of Sail on Saturday, where the ships will move past the coastal resorts of Roker and Seaburn and there will be onshore entertainment continuing well into the evening. And if you don’t mind travelling a little further afield, there are a series of concerts happening in Newcastle
in July, organised by events company Geordie Moor. The three gigs are dubbed The Proms, The Launch Party and The Big Party and take place each evening from Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 July at Nuns Moor, Newcastle under a big top tent. Those attending The Proms on 19 July will be treated to music from a live orchestra – with a bit of a twist. Music fans can enjoy classic dance tracks from the 80s, 90s and 00s performed by the 60 piece Birmingham Gay Symphony Orchestra at the event, as part of glamourous clubbing brand, Miss Moneypenny’s.
performing favourite tracks like Boom Boom Boom Boom and We Like to Party and supporting a superstar pop group that is yet to be announced. And on Saturday night, The Big Party will welcome chart-topper Jessie J to the stage to perform her greatest hits, supported by former Girls Aloud star Nadine Coyle. Tickets for all three of the concerts can be purchased from www.geordiemoor. co.uk/tickets. So wherever your interests lie, there’s something for everyone in the region this summer and no excuse not to make the most of it.
Then the following evening at The Launch Party, euro-pop favourites The Vengaboys will take to the stage,

misconception that this is a grey, gloomy city with grim buildings reflecting its chequered history. Nothing could be further from the delightful discoveries there is to be had on a visit here. It’s Old Town – named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980 – colourfully represents every European architectural style you can think of and the result is a bright, vibrant area full of stylish bars and restaurants.
There is so much to enjoy here – from a stroll around the castle walls to a visit to the Uprising Museum, recounting the harrowing story of unbelievable bravery of those who lived in the Warsaw Ghetto during WW2. The city is currently experiencing a huge economic boom and it’s not surprising. Industry and culture operate side by side; the standard of living is high but costs are low what’s not to love? Of course all of that doesn’t necessarily concern tourists but it’s interesting to note the background of the place you’re visiting.
For those who like their food stodgy, filling and in large portions – welcome to food (and drink) heaven. Beer is served in glasses so large you can barely lift them and for carnivores you can enjoy huge portions of meat, sausages and the ubiquitous sauerkraut. For fine dining try Polska Rozana, particularly in the summer where the restaurant is absolutely packed with breathtaking displays of flowers or Pod Gigantami where your feel like you’re dining in a stately home. But it isn’t all about expensive eateries. One of our favourites is Podwale Kompania Piwna, a traditional Polish restaurant tucked away in a back lane with vintage

Don’t miss your chance to enter one of the region’s best loved running events
RUNNERS from across Middlesbrough are being urged to tie up their trainers, put on their fitness gear and enter one of the borough’s most iconic road races. The Ali Brownlee Riverside Run, which is being organised by Everyone Active on behalf of Middlesbrough Council, is taking place on Saturday, July 1 and there is still time to take part. Entries will close on Monday, June 25 and numbers are limited. The event is organised in memory of Ali Brownlee, who was not only proud and passionate about Middlesbrough Football Club, but also the town and its people. He was committed to supporting as many people,
organisations, projects and events as he could, no matter how big or small.
Jimmy Wattis, Everyone Active’s events manager said: “We are delighted

to be delivering the Ali Brownlee Riverside Run in partnership with Middlesbrough Council.
After Ali passed away in 2016, the event was renamed to commemorate his dedication to the race and commitment to the town. The event, which is celebrating its 10th Anniversary, offers something for everyone in the local community. The 5km race provides the ideal opportunity for runners to either take on their first road race, or more season-athletes to try and beat their PB. Alternatively, people of all ages and abilities can enter the shorter 2km fun run, which is perfect for families and youngsters. Runners will pass some of Middlesbrough’s iconic sites including the Transporter Bridge, Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond’s monumental Temenos sculpture, finishing with a lap of the Riverside Stadiums pitch being cheered on by friends, relatives and the community.
“We are committed to encouraging the local community to lead healthier, more active lifestyles and the event provides a great opportunity for everyone to get active this summer. I would encourage runners of all ages to enter the race and come and join in the fun.” Councillor Lewis Young, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member with responsibility for sports development, said: “The Riverside Run is a lasting
celebration of a much missed character, and is a firm fixture on the regional running calendar. “It’s a challenge for all the family, and its growing popularity is a testament to a great event, and the genuine affection in which its namesake is held. “I’m looking forward to another fantastic event that will do Ali proud.” To sign up for the event visit: www.everyoneactive.com/ runmiddlesbrough/
