TREE PLANTING A MIDDLESBROUGH cemetery is to see a number of new trees planted in a nationwide show of support for forests. The planting at Thorntree Cemetery has come about as a result of Middlesbrough MP Andy McDonald signing up to a Woodland Trust campaign. The campaign – the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy (QCC) – aims to unite all Commonwealth countries in saving one of the world’s most important natural habitats – forests. As a result, Mr McDonald has received five saplings, comprising two silver birch, two rowan and a hazel tree, species chosen as they live happily in most locations.

Clockwise from bottom left, Andy McDonald MP, Middlesbrough’s Deputy Mayor Cllr Charlie Rooney, Cllr Denise Rooney and Middlesbrough Council Cemeteries Supervisor Mark Daniels.

4 | Middlesbrough Today

The MP then approached Middlesbrough Council to help find a suitable location for the planting and Thorntree Cemetery was decided on, partly due to several trees being damaged recently by the high winds. Mr McDonald said: “I am delighted that Middlesbrough Council have been so supportive and that the trees will be planted in such a great location. It is so important that we invest in our local trees and

woodland and the Council has an excellent record in that regard with so many of our parks achieving Green Flag status. “Protecting and preserving our local environment is crucial and I am committed to doing all I can to help in that effort. These trees are one small, but important way, that we can raise awareness and promote and expand local woodland.” Cllr Denise Rooney, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Environment and Commercial Services, said: “This is a very thoughtful gesture from our local MP Mr McDonald and we are very grateful for the donation to the town. “Trees play a huge part in creating a tranquil environment in all our public places and we know everyone in the Thorntree community and visitors to the cemetery will be pleased and will enjoy watching the saplings grow.” The QCC tree giveaway is supported by Sainsbury’s, which since 2004 has raised more than £7m for the planting of more than three million trees across the UK. £24 MILLION GOVERNMENT INVESTMENT TO BENEFIT THE TEES VALLEY

drive up standards at secondary level and improve outcomes for pupils post 16.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has praised a £24million investment from Government to improve education, boost social mobility and raise aspirations for children in the Tees Valley.

A further £12million will be used to boost early career training for new teachers, help improve the quality of teaching and raise standards in the region’s secondary schools.

Education Secretary Damian Hinds MP has launched Opportunity North East, which aims to tackle issues holding young people back, raising the number of students attending the country’s top universities or inspiring them to access education, employment and training post year 11.

The programme will see secondary schools, and colleges work to encourage young people to consider university, degree apprenticeships and other high quality technical education options, while partnering with local businesses to improve job prospects for young people across the region.

The scheme will see £12million invested in targeted approaches to improve the transition from primary to secondary school,

Welcoming the announcement, Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “We have some fantastic schools in the Tees Valley that

Ben Houchen talking to students at Tees Valley Skills and STEM event

are driving up standards so more young people develop the knowledge they need to succeed, and attain the skills our businesses need to thrive. We’re working hard to develop proper home-grown talent to support our growing economy, but there’s still much more to do. “Working with our fantastic schools and business leaders, we will ensure this money is targeted properly so our young people are given every opportunity to fill the highquality jobs of tomorrow.”

FULL STEAM AHEAD FOR MIDDLESBROUGH’S “DESTINATION STATION” THE ongoing transformation of Middlesbrough Railway Station has received a further boost on platform improvements, capacity enhancements and direct trains to London. Middlesbrough Council, working in partnership with the rail industry, produced a Station Masterplan earlier this year setting out the aspirations for modern infrastructure to support the ongoing city-scale regeneration in Middlesbrough. The joint working led to £4.5m being secured from Network Rail (£2m), Tees Valley Combined Authority (£2m) and Middlesbrough Council (£500k). Following detailed design and consultation, the improvements are scheduled to get underway in summer 2019 and are expected to add significant vibrancy to the station and the area around it.

All of that work will build on the £3m of investment that has already gone into repairing the roof and making other improvements. Middlesbrough’s Deputy Mayor and Executive Member for City Centre Strategy, Cllr Charlie Rooney, said: “Middlesbrough Council has for the past three years done an unbelievable job in bringing all the various parties together to create the Station Masterplan and getting us to the point where £7.5m is already committed to major improvements. “We are now at a point where, with the agreement of our partners in the combined authority, we can resolve the capacity and infrastructure issues to create a destination station which with direct trains to London brings with it huge economic and leisure opportunities.

Middlesbrough Mayor Dave Budd (r) and Middlesbrough MP Andy McDonald (l) launching the Station Masterplan for Middlesbrough.

“Middlesbrough is currently seeing major cityscale regeneration projects across an array of sectors and the Rail Station is an absolutely key component of our ambitions.”

Producers from hit BBC One prime time series Eat Well For Less? are looking for families / households who would like to eat well and save some money on their weekly shop. The show follows Masterchef’s Gregg Wallace and award winning greengrocer Chris Bavin on a mission to prove that it is possible for families and households to save money on their food budget without

scrimping on taste and nutrition. They hope that by analysing the shopping habits of UK families, they can help to show where we can source the best and cheapest quality food.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION Bronia McGregor finds out what audiences will see at Remembering the Movies ahead of its arrival in Billingham in March…

G

littering costumes, classic songs and flawless routines are all to be expected at Remembering the Movies. Strictly Come Dancing’s very own Janette Manrara and Aljaž Škorjanec are bringing the movies to life with their latest show, following on from their hugely successful Remembering Fred tour. “Aljaž and I are so excited touring our brand new show Remembering the Movies,” said Janette. “We did two years of Remembering Fred, which celebrated the legacy of Hollywood legend Fred Astaire, who we are both huge fans of, but this year we wanted to try and top that.” And film fans will be pleased to hear that there will be a mixture of movies featured in the show, both old and new and from various genres. “When the movies idea came up we got really excited because there are so many different things you can tap into, so many incredible films,” she said. And while Remembering Fred focused on one man, this time there were countless titles and moments to choose from, bringing with it the difficult task of narrowing down the list. 6 | Middlesbrough Today

“Just picking which ones we’re going to dance to and celebrate was tricky. But I’m really excited because the cast is different, in the sense it’s really, really strong in contemporary, ballet and jazz.

Remembering the Movies comes to Billingham Forum Theatre on Friday 29 March. To buy tickets, visit www.forumtheatrebillingham.co.uk or call 01642 552663.

“It’s going to be a huge celebration of the most iconic moments in film, celebrating the songs and some of the very best dance moments.”

COMPETITION

From classic titles to modern blockbusters, Remembering the Movies will pay tribute to stars like Audrey Hepburn, Gene Kelly and Marilyn Monroe, as well as much-loved films including Saturday Night Fever, The Greatest Showman, La La Land, Cabaret and many more.

What was the name of Aljaž and Janette’s previous tour?

With big names to live up to, Remembering the Movies is bringing an equally impressive set, with fantastic staging, spectacular backdrops and a huge cast of talented dancers to bring the choreography to life. “Aljaž and I can’t wait to get stuck into the creative side with the team and the dancers. I think what we’re trying to create is that experience of being at the cinema, but with live entertainment!” said Janette. Aljaž added, “We will have a huge LED screen and wonderful stage and set design, but this time we will have an even larger cast of some of the UK’s finest dancers. We are really excited to bring this show to the stage.”

And if it’s music you’re looking for, the Linthorpe Venue has some great nights lined up! Adam Summerhayes returns to Middlesbrough with The Magic of Vienna on Saturday 12th January with his superb orchestra for the third time for what promises to be another great evening. As well wonderful waltzes such as The Blue Danube, The Skater’s Waltz and Waltz of the Flowers, there will be lively numbers such as Brahms’ Hungarian Dance and Strauss’ Radetzky March. This year, international soprano Ana Maria Rincon will combine her beautiful voice with Adam’s violin in the Flower Duet from Lakme by Delibes, as well as enchanting listeners with Franck’s Panis Angelicus and Handel’s Lascia ch’io pianga. by the Beast, a grisly and fearsome monster. Little does she know that he is a Prince cursed by a magical Enchantress. The only way the Beast may become human again is if he learns to love and be loved in return. Will he and Belle confess their love for one another before it is too late? On Wednesday 23rd January Michael Portillo brings his A Life of Two Halves tour to Middlesbrough Theatre. It took Michael Portillo little more than 10 years to get a seat in the Commons and then rise in power and esteem to a point where he was a favoured leader of his party and possible future PM. Although his political career then came to a humiliating end, losing his seat in May 1997, Michael has since reinvented and endeared himself to many with his obvious respect for the great railways of the world. Listen to his story, told with a “parliamentary standup” wit, and then feel free to question him about it. Followed by a book signing. Will Rock’n’Roll ever die? Cinema trip turns into first date recreation after over 60 years MARRIED couple George and Ann Bullock recreated their first date at a landmark Middlesbrough cinema over 60 years later.

The Gables Care Home At Hill Care we know that no two people are the same, which is why we offer a unique approach to care.

The romantic pair went to the Elite Picture House, on Linthorpe Road, in 1956 to see romantic musical drama Love Me or Leave Me, starring Doris Day and James Cagney.

The Gables offers tailored residenal, nursing, residenal demena and nursing demena care, whether respite, short or long stay.

The venue closed as a cinema in 1987, however, later opening as the Crown Bingo Club and then Crown pub, which has also since shut.

George and Ann were, therefore, treated to a trip to the town’s Cineworld to see a dementia friendly screening of hit summer musical Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

Another resident of The Gables Care Home, Gordon Clark, also went to see the Mamma Mia sequel. The pensioner had to console the home’s activities coordinator, Emma Myers, after she broke into tears during an emotional scene, when the death of a popular character is revealed. Emma said: “I didn’t realise that Donna’s character had died, and I got quite emotional, which is when George held my hand until I’d stopped crying.

“It was great to see how much the residents enjoyed the trip out. Their faces were full of enjoyment and they haven’t stopped talking about it since. “We’re planning on seeing Grease next time.” The Gables Care Home is part of the Hill Care Group. For further information visit www.hillcare.net

WHAT’S BETTER THAN A HOLIDAY?

TWO HOLIDAYS! Bernice Saltzer combines two countries in one memorable trip… My love affair with the Far East began, bizarrely, through a television cookery show. A Masterchef Australia fanatic, I was enthralled by the contestants’ visit to Singapore and their experience at the iconic Marina Bay Sands hotel, with its rooftop infinity pool. That inspired our next holiday choice and quite a few after that, with Thailand and Hong Kong also then ticked off the bucket list. So when the opportunity to take in one of the most famous cities in Malaysia followed by a stay on the 20 | Middlesbrough Today

magical island of Bali arose, who would refuse? It didn’t take long to realise why friends who have previously visited Kuala Lumpur have said they fell in love with it. What you have here is a city of massive contrasts – from the iconic twin Petronas Towers and the KL Tower which symbolise a modern city at its best – to street markets and delicious hawker food cooked fresh in front of you. No visit is complete without a trip to Jalan Alor, a lively street packed full

of outdoor restaurants and stands offering everything from the freshest of seafood to Malaysian specialities. Choosing just what to see in a visit that spans a few days is difficult, but at the top of the list has to be the Batu Caves. Towering over it is the massive Murugan statue which guards the entrance. You clamber up dozens of multicoloured steps to enter this Tamil shrine and simply wonder at the temples created inside. It’s hot and punishing work – the humidity in Kuala Lumpur is exhausting – but worth every step.

We left Malaysia and headed for Bali, the paradise island renowned for its distinctive culture and style. Our first stay was the town of Ubud, where we stayed at the stunning Furama Villas and Spa. This little slice of paradise offers elegant, private villas which even come with their own pool – not surprising we simply didn’t want to leave. But if we hadn’t we would have missed out on so much that Ubud has to offer, from the sacred monkey forest to the amazing markets where you can buy endless souvenirs at bargain prices. It’s a great spot from which to see typical Balinese

architecture, with highly ornate buildings everywhere you look. Our next stop was Nusa Dua, a manmade resort which has back to back luxury hotels. Beautiful beaches are great for relaxing but we craved more of traditional Bali, so it’s worthwhile wandering outside the gates to the village – or get a taxi to the lively resort of Kuta where you can sit on the sands, drink in hand and watch the sun go down. This really was a trip of a lifetime and for anyone with a sense of adventure who wants to sample a different way of life – get on that plane!
