LOCALNEWS COOK BIRTHPLACE MUSEUM TO RE-OPEN FOR 2019 SEASON ONE of the region’s best-loved museums sets sail on a fresh voyage of discovery next week. The Captain Cook Birthplace Museum opened on Tuesday 2nd April for its 2019 season. This year marks 250 years since the great explorer landed in Tahiti and New Zealand and will see the museum open up Cook’s story for younger visitors and their families. The interactive exhibition features images from the popular children’s book ‘You Wouldn’t Want to Explore with Captain Cook’ illustrated by David Antram. Filled with interactive activities to demonstrate the experiences on Cook’s first voyage, visitors can discover more about life on board a ship, the food they ate, dress up as an able seaman, experience the smells of
life below deck and even try sewing a sailor into his hammock. Throughout the year the museum will continue to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Cook’s first voyage with an events programme to suit all ages. The Captain Cook Birthplace Museum is located in Stewart Park, close to the site of James Cook’s birth, and follows the naval explorer’s life from his early years and education, through his time in the Merchant Navy, to Cook’s distinguished Royal Navy career, including his three great voyages of discovery. Matthew Storey, Middlesbrough Council’s Museums Head of Transformation, said: “We’re looking forward to a busy season with a whole range of events, activities and talks planned throughout the year.
COMMUNITY BANK OPENS MIDDLESBROUGH’S Community Bank, offering a “real alternative” as a low-cost lender, has been unveiled by Mayor Dave Budd. The bank, which will look, feel and work like any other high street operator, will be called the South Tees Community Bank and is based at the A66 end of Linthorpe Road near other financial institutions. However, as a crucial difference the Community Bank will also be open to those in financial hardship who may otherwise be turned away from the major high street names. The Community Bank aims to allow local people to save and borrow without falling prey to high-interest ‘payday lenders’ and loan sharks and has been made possible with grant funding totalling £465,000 from the SSI Task Force, and a further £50,000 from Middlesbrough Council.
The pioneering Community Bank is a key strand of elected Mayor Dave Budd’s 2025 Vision for a Fairer, Safer and Stronger Middlesbrough.
‘INCREDIBLE… MUST-SEE SHOW’

Mr Budd, himself a former high street bank manager, made a Community Bank a key strand of his 2025 Vision for a Fairer, Safer, Stronger Middlesbrough. He said: “It’s great to see Middlesbrough’s Community Bank taking shape and we have a great location among all of other high street financial institutions.

PENSIONER REUNITED WITH HER LETTER FROM THE QUEEN A MIDDLESBROUGH pensioner left distraught after losing a letter sent by the Queen has been reunited with the correspondence thanks to detective work by a concerned councillor.
by her own admission it could have been anywhere, including as far as Whitby.
Cllr Alma Hellaoui was out doing her rounds in the Newport ward when she came across 78-year-old resident Joan Clark frantically going through her recycling bin.
However, having left her number, “just in case”, the councillor was extremely surprised to receive a call from a member of staff at mima later saying the letter had been found.
Joan explained that she was a keen published poet and had sent a piece of her writing to Queen Elizabeth II, entitled Inside a Palace Garden about a trip to Buckingham Palace, receiving a thank you letter in response.
Cllr Hellaoui then managed to reunite Joan with her precious letter two days later.
However at some point Joan had mislaid the piece. She told Cllr Hellaoui of a number of places she may have left it including mima and Middlesbrough Central Library – although
Cllr Hellaoui promptly asked the two named city centre venues if the letter had been handed in – to no joy.
In her thanks Joan said she had “travelled more miles than Gulliver” and added that “God sent me an absolute angel” in the local ward councillor. Cllr Hellaoui said: “I was amazed but absolutely delighted for Joan. She was so upset at having lost the letter and I think we both thought it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Joan thought it could have been at mima or the library but equally she felt it could have been in her house or anywhere between Middlesbrough and Whitby.
Cllr Alma Hellaoui (L), with Newport resident Joan Clark, holding her letter from Buckingham Palace.
“I’m so pleased for her and I’ve brought her a frame to put the letter in for safekeeping.”
Joan said: “I absolutely overwhelmed with joy that people can be like Alma and be so kind. I had been to the doctors with my blood pressure and had been in an absolute state and then this happens. It’s incredible and I’ve told Alma if there’s ever anything I can do in return I will.” To say thank you Joan has written Cllr Hellaoui a letter, displaying many of her creative writing skills, and has promised to follow it up with a poem. The letter reads: Dear Councillor, I am writing to thank you so much after through your sheer kindness got my most treasured letter from Her Majesty The Queen back in my possession because I’d travelled more miles than Gulliver, besides tipping, tearing, turning every possible item. I got to near despair when I thought my ordeal was at an end God sent me an absolute angel - that was you. Nobody knows how relieved I was when you knocked on my door and said “Joan! I’ve got it! The letter you thought was lost has been found and is in the mima.” I was dumbfounded and won’t forget that in the middle of all that wintry frost and treacherous galey northern storms, showers, sleet, snowy throws you found it in your heart of hearts to go to mima in order to strike that one piece of luck which got my letter back. I won’t forget you ever and am rendering a million thanks because that’s how much it meant to me. So God bless you always.

NORTHERN POWERHOUSE CHEMICALS SECTOR COULD GROW BY £20BILLION A report by the North of England’s leading universities and top Tees Valley officials has highlighted how the chemical and process sector across the Northern Powerhouse could grow by more than £20billion over the next 20 years. The Northern Powerhouse Chemicals & Processing Sector Science and Innovation Audit is one of a selection of major government studies produced for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, to identify identified a number of strengths in different industries across the country. Co-authored by the Tees Valley Combined Authority and Durham University, the report set out to assess the chemical and processing sector’s innovation network across the Northern Powerhouse – the economic corridor between Tees Valley, Humberside and the North West Cluster around Liverpool. Chemicals and processing currently contribute £32billion to the UK economy, but the audit identified opportunities, actions and investment that could be taken to boost this figure by £23billion. These include further industrial digitalisation, opportunities for scale and growth through supply chain and export diversification, and sectoral free trade zones.
The report provides and evidence base for a £20million bid to Government’s Strength In Places fund, to create a world-class research presence to pioneer new approaches to the low carbon economy, meaning the chemicals industry can continue to be globally competitive and environmentally sustainable. It would also see an ambassador established for the Northern Powerhouse chemicals cluster, to drive forward growth, investment and innovation. Tees Valley Local Enterprise Partnership chair Paul Booth OBE said: “The chemical and process sector is a huge part of our economy in Tees Valley, and in other parts of the Northern Powerhouse. The history of the chemical industry is in many ways the history of Teesside, and with the right effort we can make this vital sector part of our future for decades to come.
research and innovation, underpinned by close working between some of the country’s leading universities and industry. “Building upon this, there are huge opportunities to grow the transfer of skills, technology and research knowledge between universities and businesses in the chemicals and process sector, with potentially enormous benefits for the economy of the North and the UK as a whole. “We look forward to working with our partners in industry and government as we aim to find a way forward to implement the ambitious proposals of this report.”
“We now have a choice, we can embrace the findings of this report and look to grow this sector, or we can stand by and watch it decline. For me there is no choice, and it is clear that there is no status quo. We can move backward or forwards.”
The science and innovation audit was delivered by a group led by the Combined Authority comprising representatives from Durham and Teesside Universities, the North East Process Industry Cluster and the region’s national innovation centres, the Centre for Process Innovation, Materials Processing Institute and TWI. Further engagement was sought from 15 Northern Powerhouse universities, 11 LEPs within the Northern Powerhouse, sectoral bodies, via industrial consultation and the Chemistry Growth Partnership.
Professor Stuart Corbridge, Vice-Chancellor, Durham University, said: “The North of England has tremendous strengths in
