Members of Soroptimist International Middlesbrough are joined by Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioner Barry Coppinger and representatives from Daft as a Brush for a bluebell viewing ceremony in support of the Bluebell Bus Challenge

BLUEBELLS LIGHT UP ALBERT PARK FOR CANCER CHARITY A COLOURFUL display at a popular Middlesbrough park is raising awareness for a marathon charity fund-raising effort. Last October Soroptimist International of Middlesbrough planted 500 bluebells in Albert Park in aid of Daft as a Brush Cancer Patient Care. The charity provides custom-made vehicles to transport outpatients undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy cancer treatment to and from hospital free of charge. And at the weekend their efforts – with the help of Park Manager Tracy Roulston, One Planet Pioneer Casper Scallen and apprentices from Middlesbrough Environment City - were on show for all to see. The bluebell viewing ceremony on Saturday May 4th was the latest stage in an epic fundraising challenge that has seen trustee Brian Burnie complete 3,000 miles of his two-year, 7,000-mile walk around the entire coastal path of Great Britain and Ireland.

Daft as a Brush spokesman Dave Harrison, who attended Saturday’s event, said: “I was thrilled to be invited to this event by Soroptimist International, Middlesbrough. “The planting of 500 bluebell bulbs in Albert Park is poignant reminder that Brian Burnie’s epic walk to take Daft as a Brush Cancer Patient Care nationwide, is to create 1,000,000 free cancer patient journeys. “Each bluebell flower represents a single cancer patient journey - with bulbs sold all over the country, we’re aiming to create a ‘carpet of blue’. “On Brian’s return at Christmas next year, we will begin setting up hubs all over Great Britain and Ireland. “This would not be possible without the help and support of amazing people, such as the incredible members of Soroptimist International - on behalf of Brian and Cheryl

Burnie, we are so grateful, thank you so much.” Albert Park Manager Tracy Roulston said: “The bluebells are always a popular sight in the Park, but this year they have a special significance. “The Bluebell Bus coastal walk is a huge challenge in a great cause, and we’re delighted to be able to play a part in such a worthwhile fund-raising effort.” Pam Cooper, President of Soroptimist International Middlesbrough, said: “We are so pleased that Daft as a Brush, which we have supported, is making life easier for so many cancer patients around the country by providing them with accompanied transport to and from their hospital appointments.” To find out more about Daft as a Brush and the Bluebell Bus Challenge, visit www.bluebellbus.org.uk

PLAY AREA LATEST SUCCESS FOR NORTH ORMESBY BIG LOCAL A NEW state-of-the-art play area is the latest stage in the transformation of a key Middlesbrough community. The official launch of Pavilion Pines marked the culmination of three years’ hard work by the volunteers, staff and partners of the £1 million North Ormesby Big Local project. Local children played a key role in creating a much-needed family resource on the site of the former North Ormesby Pavilion.

of bikes to allow all children to use the play area’s cycle track and to take part in a cycle proficiency programme, learning vital road safety skills. Planters, seeds and children’s gardening tools will also be bought to promote awareness of sustainable living, enhance and care for the local environment and grow healthy food.

The derelict land has been transformed into a much-needed provision for families as part of a ten-year, £200 million National Lottery Community Fund drive to enable local communities to identify the priorities that matter to them and take positive action.

pleasing that local children have played a key role in taking their own design from drawing to reality. “I have no doubt families will continue to use the park for many years to come.”

The landscaped Esk Street facility consists of swings, slides, climbing frames and other play equipment and cost £120,000 to design and install.

Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston joined newly elected ward member Cllr Ashley Waters and a member of the local community for a special launch event.

An application to the Empower Middlesbrough Community Action Fund was also successful, enabling the purchase of materials to build bird boxes, and a range

Cllr Waters said: “Pavilion Pines is a shining example of how the best ideas for improving community life come from the residents themselves, and in this case our young people.

Further funding applications are in the pipeline, with resident’s keen to see additional play equipment installed on the site. Rev Dominic Black, Vicar of North Ormesby and Chair of the North Ormesby Big Local Partnership said: “There is much more to building a park than we realised at the outset, and we have certainly learned a great deal along the way.

BOOM-BANG-A-BANG, LULU’S BACK IN THE REGION

Bronia McGregor spoke to Lulu about The Beatles, her love of hats and songwriting ahead of her new tour, On Fire. Lulu might be celebrating five decades in show business, but she still has plenty to shout about. “I live for it,” she admits “you don’t carry on with it for all this time if you don’t!” On tour with Take That at the time of our interview and back on stage later this year for 35 dates with her own show, you could be forgiven for thinking the singer was a fan of being on the road. “If I’m honest, it’s not all happy clappy on tour,” she admits. “When I was on tour with Anastacia and Chaka Khan, we spent more time in make-up than we did on stage. “I’m done with all the hair and make-up and I’ve actually started wearing hats. I think there’s a certain cool about it, a real swagger when you have a cool hat.”

So what can fans expect from this tour? “A couple of hats!” she jokes. “What I’ve discovered in the last five years is I’m more interested in the music than the set, the hair, the clothes. “I was a late bloomer songwriter so I like to talk about my songs now, songs I’ve written and songs that define different points in my career.” And for the first time, Lulu’s story will come to life on stage with a huge LED screen showcasing both personal and career defining moments. While it’s easy to get lost in the glitz and glamour when listening to Lulu recall her stories about greats like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and being present while The Bee Gees wrote some of their best hits, she insists it isn’t as dazzling as many may think. “Everyone wants to be famous now and I can’t wrap my head around it, it can be very hard to cope with. “Of course, you have your moments when you’re on top of the world with people recognising you and people think the job is very glam but you’re still a person who works very hard. “Fame comes and goes and you have to keep your feet on the ground.” And with the new tour celebrating 55 years since Shout, the song that started it all, Lulu is spoilt for choice to pick her career highlights. “When To Sir With Love went to number one in America, that was a pinch me moment because when I was a little girl I

only loved American music; RnB, soul, gospel, rock and roll. That is, until I got to around 13 or 14 and The Beatles came around. “And then to have The Beatles on television saying that Shout was their favourite record, I continue to have pinch me moments! There are a lot of ups and downs and you just have to roll with the punches. “It wasn’t always easy for me but I just never gave up. I was born to do this. There’s no doubt, I know I was.”

COMPETITION Lulu is performing at the Forum Theatre Billingham on 3rd October & The Durham Gala Theatre on 15th October. To win a pair of tickets to see Lulu at The Gala Theatre Durham simply answer, the following question:

The Woman in Black

Rip It Up

23rd – 28th March 2020

16th October

A lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family by The Spectre of a Woman in Black engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It all begins innocently enough, but then, as they reach further into his darkest memories, they find themselves caught up in a world of eerie marshes and moaning winds. This gripping production is a brilliantly successful study in atmosphere, illusion and controlled horror.

From the Producers of Rip It Up the 50’s and 60’s comes the greatest music decade ever! There is a strong argument that this might have been the greatest decade of alltime for popular music. Michael Jackson went Off The Wall, Eagles were checking out of Hotel California, The Bee Gees defined a Saturday Night Fever, Bruce was Born to Run, Carol King wove her Tapestry, Fleetwood Mac had their Rumours, The Beatles Let It Be, John Lennon Imagined…. And we have still yet to mention Queen, Elton, American Pie, The Carpenters, Marvin Gaye, Barry White, Sandy & Danny in Grease, Led Zeppelin climbing their Stairway to Heaven and Pink Floyd finding The Dark Side of the Moon. The 70’s didn’t do things by halves!

North Ormesby resident Frances Graham with ward Councillor Ashley Waters and dachshund Patrick enjoy the tranquil surroundings of the Stainton Street back alley

ALLEY MAKEOVER ADDS SPLASH OF SPRING TO NORTH ORMESBY AN amazing alley makeover has added a splash of spring colour to a local community.

The work has been praised by newlyelected North Ormesby ward Councillor Ashley Waters, who now hopes to encourage schemes across the ward and further afield.

And the transformation has proved so popular, plans are afoot to give other alleyways and neighourhoods a similar revamp.

Cllr Waters said: “North Ormesby is a fantastic community because of amazing people like Frances who go the extra mile and beyond to make a real difference.

Frances Graham first applied to Thirteen and Accent Housing three years ago for support to improve the alley between Stainton Street and Allinson Street in North Ormesby.

“The transformation of the alley into a wonderful shared facility is what community pride and spirit are all about, and that’s something we can really build on.

And the 75-year-old has been hard at work ever since – with help from Middlesbrough Council – keeping the alley spotless, and a haven of peace and tranquility at the heart of the community.

“We don’t get any junking or anything like that now, and it’s lovely to see the children out playing together.

Frances said: “I’ve lived in North Ormesby my whole life, and I’m very passionate about the area.

“It’s hard work but it’s a real pleasure doing it, and it would be fantastic to see it happen elsewhere in North Ormesby.”

“The transformation of the alley has made a huge difference – it creates community pride and gets respect.

The alley – and one behind nearby Millfield Road - recently received a boost from Middlesbrough’s Green Fingers Club with a donation of tubs, shrubs and plants. Club leader Cllr Joan McTigue said: “Our aim is to ‘green up’ the town using anything we can beg from people such as plants, seeds, bulbs and old plant tubs. “Middlesbrough Council and Thirteen have offered help and I must single out Acklam resident Jackie Young who has spent a lot of time and money cleaning and filling tubs for me. “Our first delivery of tubs was to Stainton Street where Frances Graham has single-handedly created a haven worthy of the Chelsea Flower Show – and at her own expense too.”

14 | Middlesbrough Today

“Over the coming months I will be speaking to residents to get other schemes up and running, with a view to residents and volunteers taking ownership of their alleys, cleaning and painting them where possible, and adding benches and planters to create new assets for the whole community.”

STUDENTS LOOK TO THE FUTURE IN CENTRE SQUARE CAPSULE SCHOOL children from across Middlesbrough looked to the future when they left a message for posterity at a key development site.

“By working together and nurturing each other’s strengths, we know that even a little key can open a heavy door.” Mark Ashall, director of Ashall Projects, said: “Centre Square is one of the most significant development sites in the whole region, and these students will see the area develop and flourish into a central business hub over the next few years.

Students from six schools created their own special artefacts for inclusion in a time capsule as part of the Centre Square Grade A office project. Work is well under way on the 210,000 sq ft office development that will create a 21st century business destination in the heart of Middlesbrough.

Students at the Holiday Inn Express on site with the sealed time capsule ready to be buried

Pieces donated by the schools: Archibald Primary School A Romeo and Juliet performance ticket, designed by one of the students and performed to the community in February Beech Grove Primary School Reading keys symbolising the children’s key to success North Ormesby Primary School A full school photograph along with their Tim Badge which awards students Star of the Week Outwood Acklam Academy School pledge booklet and pledge badge St Edward’s RC Primary School A prayer for the community written by the children

The ultra-modern buildings are being delivered in phases, with construction well advanced on the first two, with three more in the pipeline. And this week the students were invited to present their artefacts at a special event in Centre Square hosted by Middlesbrough Council, developer Ashall Projects and contractor Bowmer & Kirkland.

“Their contributions to the time capsule provide a snapshot of Middlesbrough in 2019 and will intrigue and fascinate whoever discovers them many decades from now.” Kevin Parkes, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Director of Growth and Place, said: “Centre Square symbolises Middlesbrough’s ambition and the confidence we have in our future. “I’m grateful to all the schools who have contributed some truly inspirational artefacts that will be of enormous interest to future generations.”

Have a Grand old time in York

York is fast becoming a food lover’s paradise – and one venue is leading the way… in Grand style, as EMMA WALKER reports. Something’s cooking in York. In fact, it’s fair to say this gorgeous little gem of a city is having ‘a moment’. For, while history buffs and tourists have long headed to this beautifully preserved medieval city, to take in the walls, the Minster, the Shambles, it is now drawing a whole new audience …of foodies. York has always had good restaurants, but the standard is now so high that venues like Le Cochon Aveugle and The Star Inn the City regularly top good food lists, compiled by customers and critics alike. But one venue has taken cooking to a whole new level – because, not only does it house the city’s most prestigious fine dining restaurant, it has also opened a state-of the-art cookery school. The Grand Hotel, opposite the Museum Gardens, is just a stone’s throw from York Station – which is a clue to its own historic importance.

20 | Middlesbrough Today

Originally built in 1906 as a ‘Palace of Business’ for one of the most powerful railway companies in Edwardian England, The Grand is now not only the finest hotel in the city, but Yorkshire’s only five-star hotel.

With no expense spared in the pursuit of luxury, its sweeping stone staircases, original wood panelling, parquet flooring and acres of marble, serve as opulent reminders of the building’s former status as an icon of the golden age of rail travel. And, just as it was at the cutting edge of design when it was built, the hotel is now at the cutting edge of York’s culinary scene. It is home to two restaurants; The Rise, at the heart of the hotel, offers fine dining with relaxed service for residents, visitors to York and locals alike, while its outdoor terrace is a particular draw for special events. Separately, its 3 AA rosetted Hudsons is a destination restaurant, showcasing award-winning gastronomy by offering

an exquisite and sometimes experimental tasting menu served with wine pairings. However – that is not all it offers to tempt gourmets. In March this year it opened The Cookery School – a stunning, stylish and incredibly welcoming kitchen, fitted with exactly the same, hugely expensive ovens used on tv’s Masterchef. Located in the hotel’s basement, it has its own entrance and runs a busy diary of courses for those wanting to not just eat good food but to learn how to cook it. Here, amateur cooks can enjoy express, half- and full-day courses focussing on a selection of international cuisines and speciality classes, under the skilled and experienced guidance of head tutor, Andrew Dixon.

This summer alone, keen cooks can learn everything from filleting fish to creating a vegetarian dinner party menu. They can learn the basics of pastry making, perfect a beef Wellington or turn their hand to serving up a traditional Yorkshire cream tea. And, such is Andrew’s – and the hotel’s reputation – that a veritable Who’s Who of culinary legends have signed up to hold guest workshops over the coming months. So if you think you’d seen – and tasted – everything this fantastic city has to offer – think again.

SAARA AALTO Bronia McGregor caught up with Saara Aalto ahead of her performance at Newcastle’s Northern Pride Festival this summer.

“My dreams usually come true so I have to be careful what I wish for!”

Saara Aalto burst onto our screens during the 2016 series of X Factor and it’s safe to say she hasn’t slowed down since.

So she was thrilled when she got to combine the two during week three of the ITV competition, singing Let It Go from Frozen – a song close to her heart after voicing Elsa in the Finnish version of the Disney favourite all while performing a routine on the ice. “I was so happy they let me sing,” she reveals.

This summer her busy schedule brings her to the Northern Pride Festival, which takes place from 19 to 21 July in Newcastle – a city she is looking forward to returning to.

“They didn’t want to for a while because they kept saying there were technical issues and it wouldn’t work but I got them to let me do it and everyone loved it.”

“I’m very excited to come back to Newcastle. We came for the X Factor tour and I heard so much about it from Sam Lavery,” admits Saara, who will perform at the festival on Saturday.

And while she has been lucky enough to perform and travel all over the world, she reveals the UK has a special place in her heart.

“Prides are the best events of the summer. Obviously it’s quite a personal thing for me but it’s also such a beautiful event that is all about love and I just love to perform there and have fun.”

“The best audience is actually in the UK because they are so open and very loud! In Finland, people are much more reserved so I have to work harder on stage but you perform in the UK and people are screaming and it’s a lot easier!”

After taking six months out to train for Dancing on Ice earlier this year, the singer is delighted to be back performing, currently travelling for her An Evening With Saara Aalto tour.

With so much already under her belt, including sell-out tours, representing Finland at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest, charity work and starring in her own documentary, it’s a wonder Saara has anything left to tick off on her bucket list.

“It’s great to be back on stage,” she tells me. “It’s like this is what I’m meant to be doing, this is what I love.”

“When I think about life, I have achieved everything I want to do – it’s crazy!” she admits.

FESTIVAL FEVER TOP STARS, celestial creatures and free live music throughout the summer are just three of the things to look forward to at one of the UK’s biggest free festivals. South Tyneside Festival’s three-month programme of entertainment is already underway, but if you haven’t planned a trip to the seaside town yet then don’t worry – because there’s still plenty to make the most of. This year’s Summer Parade is sure to be out of this world on Saturday 6 July, with a Space Fantasy theme taking inspiration from everything from Star Wars and Doctor Who, to real life events like the Moon landing. South Shields-based carnival company, Creative Seed, are once more making their vision come to life, with five different colourcoordinated sections of the parade – and you can keep your eye out for stilt walkers, marching bands and dance troupes along the route. Then, when the parade finishes at Bents Park, make the most of an afternoon of free entertainment, including Britain’s Got Talent favourites Boogie Storm, slinky street theatre and Titan the Robot. It just wouldn’t be the South Tyneside Festival without some big names lined up for the popular Sunday concert series – and this year is no different. Kicking off the concerts is former lead singer of Wet Wet Wet, Marti Pellow on 14 July, followed by rock band The Lightning Seeds and multi-award winning dance act Phats and Small on 21 July. Fans of the 80s can rock out to hits from Midge Ure and Nick Heyward when they perform at the third concert on 28 July, before multi-platinum singer-songwriter Gabrielle closes the shows on 4 August.

The return of the South Tyneside Festival means there’s never been a better time to head to South Shields and Bronia McGregor finds out more about what to expect…

But that’s not all music fans have to look forward to, with a packed programme over the three months. Local talent will play at the Amphitheatre every Thursday and Saturday throughout June, while brass bands will be blowing their own trumpets every Sunday afternoon in June, July and August, except 7 July – when Proms in the Park will take place at Bents Park. South Marine Park will once again host the bandstand concerts, organised by The Friends of North and South Marine Parks, showcasing local bands on 27 July, 3, 10, 17, 31 August and 7 September. And if all that isn’t enough to keep the little ones amused during the school holidays then parents will be pleased to hear that the

Kids Fun-Fest will return every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 1 to 22 August. So with lots of exciting entertainment going on for the whole family to enjoy, there’s no excuse not to plan a trip to the coast this summer. The South Tyneside Festival is supported by BBC Newcastle 95.4FM and sponsored by Port of Tyne, Colmans Seafood Temple, South Tyneside College, The Sea Hotel and Minchella & Co. The parade is also supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England For more information about the festival, visit www.southtynesidefestival.co.uk, search South Tyneside Events on Facebook or follow @STynesideEvents on Twitter.
