LOCALNEWS TOWN HISTORY TIMELINE DISPLAY UNVEILED IN MIDDLESBROUGH VISITORS to Middlesbrough can enjoy a whistle-stop tour of its history through a new timeline hoarding unveiled around the Town Hall. The Town Hall recently celebrated its 128 year anniversary since officially opening (23rd January 1889) and now residents can discover more about the history of the venue and the town. The temporary display forms part of the perimeter of the contractor site on the corner of Albert Road and Corporation Road whilst renovation work is ongoing at the Grade II* Listed venue. The hoardings have been developed by project staff and Town Hall volunteers and chart historical events in the town and venue’s history including the story of rapid Victorian expansion, iron manufacturing, opening of the Transporter Bridge and David Bowie’s performance as Ziggy Stardust at Middlesbrough Town Hall 1972. The timeline also features artist impressions of the completed works alongside reproductions of unique historic plans, photographs and newspaper snippets from

the collections of Middlesbrough Libraries, Teesside Archives and The Gazette. Tosh Warwick, Middlesbrough Council’s Heritage Development Officer, said: “The new hoardings capture key moments in both the story of Middlesbrough and the Town Hall spanning over two centuries and highlight the important part the venue has played in the history of the area. “We have already had very positive feedback on the timeline and hope it generates further interest in Middlesbrough’s heritage, the history of the Town Hall and the fantastic renovation of one of the region’s leading landmarks.” The Middlesbrough Town Hall Refurbishment and Restoration Project is supported by a £3.7m Heritage Lottery Fund award, a further £3.6m from Middlesbrough Council and £500,000 awarded by Arts Council England (ACE).
The ambitious £30m private development, which would be situated at Middlehaven between Temenos and Middlesbrough College, is being put forward by Teesside company Cool Runnings (NE) Ltd. Extensive plans detailing the layout of the seven acre site have now been put to Middlesbrough Council for consideration. The plans show a main ski slope and nursery slope, other leisure uses, areas for associated retail, bars and eateries, car parking and a terrace which looks out over the Middlehaven Dock. Among the proposed additional leisure uses are facilities for sledging, tubing, ice wall climbing, an ice bar, trampoline park, indoor sky dive centre, climbing walls and more. Around 350 new jobs would be created by the snow centre project and a public consultation returned almost universal positivity for the scheme.
£100k PARK TO BE CREATED AFTER LAND TRANSFER AGREED
Rachael Howson, of Cool Runnings (NE) Ltd, said: “We are delighted to be in a position to have submitted planning documents for consideration and would like to thank everyone who has worked on the proposals so far.
A COMMUNITY is to create a £100,000 playpark after Middlesbrough Council agreed to gift a parcel of land to a residentled group.
“The feedback we have received from the consultation period was overwhelmingly positive and showed a real appetite for the snow centre”
The facility will be sited on Esk Street in North Ormesby where the Pavilion once stood before falling into disrepair and subsequently being demolished in 2013. It is being developed and managed by North Ormesby Neighbourhood Development Trust (NONDeT) after Middlesbrough Council agreed to gift the land to the community group on a 25-year lease and will sit next to the current multi-use games area used for football, basketball and other sports. North Ormesby ward’s Councillor Lewis Young, who also serves as Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: “In consultations about what people want for North Ormesby, the community has always put a new park high on the agenda. “We are delighted that through a real team effort between Middlesbrough Council, the 4 | Middlesbrough Today

Richard Buckley, of Buckley Burnett Ltd, Development Consultants said: “This represents a big step towards delivering a unique development based in Middlesbrough that will attract visitors to the region.”
North Ormesby Big Local, NONDeT and North Ormesby
Currently, the nearest snow centre to Middlesbrough is in Castleford, West Yorkshire.
Ann Bayley, Chair of NONDeT, said: “I think it is a wonderful project, it will be a lovely area for all local residents young and old to visit and for the young children to play. There is nowhere in North Ormesby for the younger children to play so this will be an ideal setting. We will work closely with the Theme group to further develop the project”. The project is being funded by North Ormesby Big Local as part of the £1m Big Lottery funding being invested into the community over a ten year period.
PARK’S SAFETY BOOST THANKS TO FLEET-FOOTED FUNDRAISERS A brand new life-saving defibrillator has been unveiled at Stewart Park following a charitable drive by some of the venue’s Parkrunners. Swift-tees runner and fundraiser Rosanne Lightfoot got the ball rolling last year after reading an inquest report which brought to
mind the sudden death from cardiac arrest of one of her son’s friends. The Defib Fund was born, and in early December Swift-tees took over all the roles at the Stewart Parkrun in a fundraising drive that netted nearly £500. Former Boro star Gary Gill provided a signed Boro shirt to raffle with a further £400 raised at the group’s Christmas party. The Stewart Park machine was officially launched outside the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum by Gary Gill, Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland MP Tom Blenkinsop and Friends of Stewart Park Chairman Tom Mawston.

BUON appetito! A new Italian sandwich shop has received a healthy eating award from Middlesbrough Council. The Italian on Borough Road is the first food business of its kind to receive a Food4Health award in recognition of its commitment to promoting the benefits of a balanced diet and providing healthy food options to its customers. Middlesbrough Council’s Food4Health Awards scheme aims to help local food businesses increase access to healthier foods and to raise awareness of the need to eat healthily. Claire Conway, who owns The Italian with Stefano Foffano, was presented with a Silver Food4Health award by Councillor Julia Rostron, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Adult Health and Social Care.

PUBLIC POETRY PROJECT UNVEILED IN MIDDLESBROUGH THE writing is on the wall for Middlesbrough’s burgeoning town centre with the unveiling of poetry adorning prominent buildings. Ten pieces of classic and contemporary literature (including poetry and literary quotes) will be hand painted on walls visible throughout the town centre. The Public Poetry scheme is building on the success of Middlesbrough Council’s recent street art addition to the Linthorpe Road A66 underpass as well as adding to the feel-good cultural factor built through Orange Pip Market, Baker/Bedford Street and the various town centre art galleries. Cllr Lewis Young, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Culture, Media and Sport, said: “There is a real confidence in Middlesbrough town centre at the moment with the Baker and Bedford Street and Orange Pip Markets really capturing the imagination of people. “The Public Poetry is an extension of everything that is currently going on to add more variety into the town centre and to encourage more people to visit, for them to stay longer and have an even more enjoyable experience.”
In addition, the project will be a valuable demonstration of the ambitions for the Tees Valley City of Culture bid in 2025. The Public Poetry project will enhance to the overall vibrancy of the town centre as a desirable destination supporting mima, the Town Hall and Teesside University in the cultural agenda.
Claire said: “Working with Middlesbrough Council’s Public Health Officers and taking a close look at the ingredients, foods and methods of preparing our food has really helped us to deliver healthy food to our customers. “Eating healthily is very important and we wanted to show our customers that we were meeting their demands for healthy food. We will continue to develop our menu and promote healthy eating to our customers and we look forward to achieving a gold Food4Health award in the future.” Councillor Rostron said: “I congratulate Claire and her colleagues for their efforts in supporting our health improvement goals and achieving a Food4Health award.”
Curator of the project, Nicky Peacock, said: “Research shows that projects such as this encourage mindfulness and a sense of discovery in a familiar environment. “Teesside University supports a wide breadth of cultural activity, both within the University and in the wider community. We are delighted to support this project and hope it will bring the work of Simon Armitage and other writers to a wider audience.”
The first piece of public poetry in Middlesbrough, The Five Orange Pips by Arthur Conan Doyle, has been unveiled on Baker Street. Pictured from L-R are Cllr Lewis Young, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, sign writer Phil Anderson, and project curator Nicky Peacock of Middlesbrough Council.

Middlesbrough students’ careers take off at Teesside travel shop
The store at Teesside Retail Park won the accolade of branch of the year after a visit by a mystery shopper showed the staff to be miles better at delivering great customer service than other branches throughout the country.
THE knowledge and expertise of former Middlesbrough College students has helped a Teesside branch of Thomas Cook take a national title.
“I was really pleased to get such a high mark – I just followed the training- and obviously it works.
Four former students work at the travel centre including Apprentice 19-yearold Sophie Bower who achieved a remarkable 97 per cent mark from the incognito visitor.
“I haven’t been able to travel much myself yet – I went to London and Paris when I was at college but I’m really looking forward to the opportunities working here presents. I’d love to go to New York one day.” Kerry Dixon co-ordinator for level 3 Travel and Aviation at Middlesbrough College was on hand to congratulate the team, along with Manda Perkovic whose dual role as FE consultant for the shop is pivotal to the relationship.
Kerry explained the College has had a long-term, very successful relationship with Thomas Cook with many students going on to work in travel centres and for its airline. Manda said: “I work at the travel centre two days a week - a role I combine with my lecturer post for the college. I get to look after the students in both environments through student/study liaisons – so it is very rewarding to get such fantastic feedback.” Other employees who are also former students are Megan Rennison, 20, a former aviation student who has worked at Thomas Cook for one and a half years; Jenny Himsworth, 29, who has been there for seven years and Emma Kirby, 28, a former travel student with ten years at the firm. Emma, who lives in Marton, said: “I really enjoy working here and sharing in people’s excitement about planning and booking their trips and adventures.” Sue Nelson, store manager, said: “Over the years we have built up a great relationship with the college. We know that when we get students they will be of a high calibre, have a good work ethic, an understanding of the industry and great customer service skills.”

JIMMY TARBUCK CONFIRMS STAND UP DATE AT MIDDLESBROUGH THEATRE TOP television comedian Jimmy Tarbuck is swapping The London Palladium for Middlesbrough Theatre! Tarby, as he is known to millions of TV viewers, is one of the country’s most evergreen performers and a master of light entertainment. Having successfully spent more than 40 years in the notoriously fickle world of showbusiness, Jimmy Tarbuck has hosted numerous television shows, variety shows, chat shows and game shows and his cheeky grin and boynext-door charms have won him fans far away from his native Liverpool. However, Tarby is at his best in front of a live audience and during his date in Middlesbrough he will be sharing anecdotes, demonstrating his quickfire wit and thoroughly entertaining the audience in a show which promises comedy for grown-ups rather than adult comedy. During the entertaining evening, Tarby will be using photos and video footage to take audiences on a nostalgic trip down memory lane with a wealth of hugely funny stories and anecdotes ranging from being at school and in the same class as John Lennon to playing golf with Bing Crosby. The Liverpool-born comic and entertainer was spotted by the late Val Parnell while working as a Butlins

He’s best known for being one fifth of boy band The Wanted, but this spring Tom Parker is taking centre stage as he makes his musical theatre debut as Danny Zuko in Grease. Here, he talks to Zoe Burn about singing, dancing and great food… AS part of boy band The Wanted, Tom Parker has travelled the world, performed in front of millions of fans and even starred in a TV reality series.
After five years in a band, he admits the singing has been the easiest thing to get to grips with, and is enjoying the acting a lot.
Yet he admits none of it challenged him quite like his latest role, playing Danny Zuko in the musical theatre production of Grease.
But when it comes to the dancing, Tom admits it’s taking a bit longer to grasp. Thankfully, he’s had a bit of extra help from his fiancée, actress Kelsey Hardwick.
“I wanted to break out of my comfort zone and I think that’s certainly what’s happened here,” he laughs. “I don’t think I was expecting it to be quite so challenging, but so far the whole experience has been incredible.” His foray into musical theatre comes three years since The Wanted took a self-imposed hiatus as each of them went off to explore other avenues. In 2015 he took part in BBC TV’s Celebrity Masterchef, and was eliminated in the semi-finals before deciding he wanted a new challenge. “I had been in a band for five years and after Masterchef I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do next, but the opportunity to audition for Grease came up so I gave it a go.
“I actually auditioned for Teen Angel but shortly after I got a call saying they’d like to see me for the part of Danny. “It was a shock, it’s such an iconic role and I hadn’t expected it so I was even more surprised when I landed the role. I was after a challenge, and that’s certainly what I got.” 12 | Darlington Today
“It’s a big step, it’s a bit daunting but I am really excited. It’s more of a grown up job than being in a band, and I know it’s going to be different but I’m ready to work hard and hopefully I’ll make a convincing Danny.”
“She’s been in the industry all of her life and she really knows her stuff,” he said. “She just gets it. When I’ve come home from rehearsals struggling with dance steps she’s been there to help me get it right. I couldn’t have done it without her.” Tom and the cast – which also includes former EastEnders and Strictly Come Dancing star, Louisa Lytton and Over The Rainbow winner, Danielle Hope, are currently in the final stage of rehearsals before the show opens in Manchester in March. From there they will embark on a 10-month UK tour, and Tom admits being away from Kelsey will be hard – although he has his other passion to keep him sane – cooking. “I love cooking. I cook every day, it’s something I love to do and I find it relaxing as well as rewarding. “I’d like to try and cook for my fellow cast members I think. I know this tour is going to be hard, it’s a whole new experience for me and I know there will be times where I don’t see my fiancée for up to six weeks, but together we can get through it.
Grease The Musical is heading to Sunderland Empire from 1-6 May, 2017. Tickets are priced from £17-£39.50 and are available from the Box Office at High Street West, Sunderland, via the ticket centre www.ATGtickets.com/Sunderland or by calling 0844 871 3022.

WANTING A HOLIDAY THAT’S A HOME FROM HOME? BERNICE SALTZER MIGHT JUST HAVE FOUND THE SOLUTION… Ask any number of people what they’re doing on New Year’s Eve and you can bet that most of the answers are the same. 16 | Middlesbrough Today
“We’re staying in,” “we don’t like new year” are among the many common responses - and it’s not surprising. The run-up to Christmas can be exhausting but in which case that’s the best reason of all for heading away to see in the end of the year, with the added benefits of bargain flights and great off-season deals. Over the years we’ve spent new year in numerous places – from the madness of Prague to the delights of unspoilt Riga, from the sophistication of Rome to the craziness of Marrakech. But the one place that has us returning time after time is Spain, or to be precise, the Costa Del Sol.
Head to this area of the world in the summer and you’ll be greeted with groups of young people heading to “Marbs” and Puerto Banus (thanks TOWIE) or families enjoying their break in Fuengirola or Torremolinos. But at the end of the year the Cosa Del Sol becomes a totally different place and a fantastic one at which to enjoy the festive season. Firstly, it’s easily accessible from the North East – just under three hours and you’re touching down at Malaga. It may not be sweltering hot but it’s certainly still warm enough, so much so that a couple of years ago we were able to sunbathe on New Year’s Day.
Go as a group and it’s even more fun and luckily there are endless options for booking an apartment rather than staying in a hotel, which makes it even more economical. This time round we booked with Platinum Gold Rentals, which has a number of properties on their books in key locations. We were given some great advice from Jean, the English woman who runs the company, and finally booked a penthouse duplex near Riviera – approx. 25 minutes’ drive from the airport.
This was a really great choice for our little group of five, who all loved the great facilities and the stylish way the apartment – it seemed too grand to call it a flat! – had been decorated. It was also really handy for visiting all the resorts along the coast, with us taking in the delights of Marbella and its many restaurants and bars, the Saturday flea markets at Feungirola and even a day trip to Gibraltar. And then of course there’s New Year’s Eve itself, which we spent at the amazing Valparaiso restaurants at Mijas. Here you wine, dine, dance and generally have an amazing time with fireworks at midnight – and you’re also in a prime position to see all of the other fireworks around the coast.
True you don’t get to sing Auld Lang Syne but who cares when you can enjoy the raucous version of Y Viva Espagna and also take part in the Spanish tradition of eating 12 grapes at midnight – each one to give you good luck for the year ahead. It was a great way to get 2017 underway with a resolution made which we are all planning to keep - back again next year!

As the story unfolds upon a landscaped, open-air stage
- equivalent in size to five football pitches with a full-size lake at its centre - audiences will witness mass choreography, combat, dance, fire, dazzling pyrotechnics and astonishing lighting and water effects, as well as life size replicas of Norman longboats, steam trains, wagons and carriages. The special effects that bring the scenes to life with thrilling visual impact, will see audiences transported from Roman times through to the Second World War, encountering Viking and Norman invasions, medieval feasts to the splendour of the Tudors, the Industrial
Revolution and the Roaring Twenties along the way. An increased size volunteer cast and crew of 1,500 people - joined on stage by a supporting cast of performance horses, sheep, goats, cattle, geese and ducks – help bring the show to life. All of the volunteers are professionally trained by top performance experts in dance, theatrical combat, guest management, pyrotechnics, and cavalry to create a world-class spectacle. The performance is set to an evocative sound track composed by Nathan Stornetta, the award-winning screen composer who, since studying his craft at the Royal College of Music, has collaborated on several movies with Hollywood greats such as Hans Zimmer, whom Nathan joined on his live tour of Europe last summer. Launched by Eleven Arches in 2016, Kynren - An Epic Tale of England is the UK’s only live action show. The first season saw more than 100,000 people visit Bishop Auckland to experience 2000 years of British history, as seen through the eyes of the North East.

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER… 80s legends Shalamar will be headlining as one of the region’s most exclusive charity events returns for its 12th year….
The Lobster Ball not only provides a first class night out, it plays a vital role in raising money for charity.
IT’S become renowned as one of the North East’s most popular charity nights - and it’s back for a 12th year this spring.
It is being supported by a range of sponsors including Great Annual Saving Group and Aston Martin, and this will be the third year in a row that Daisy Chain has benefitted.
The Lobster Ball will be making a splash at Hardwick Hall Hotel in County Durham on April 21, as once again it aims to raise as much cash as possible for autism charity, Daisy Chain.
Based in Norton, Stockton-on-Tees, Daisy Chain was established as a charity to help children with autism in 2003, and now helps more than 1700 families across the Tees Valley.
With top 1980s soul stars Shalamar recently announced as the headline act, tickets for the black tie event are already selling fast and organisers are hoping that this year they can exceed previous records in a bid to improve the lives of people in and around the region.
Each week it provides around 600 hours of respite care and helps more than 580 children, and is an ever-expanding project which relies on charity donations. John Adamson admits that although the lavish night itself is all about fine food, fine entertainment and a good time, the end game is always about the charity.
Over the years, the annual event has pulled in tens of thousands of pounds for local charities, thanks to the fundraising commitment of John Adamson, owner of Hardwick Hall and Ramside Hall Hotel.
“I have always felt very strongly about supporting the region’s charities, and this is what makes the Lobster Ball such a special event,” he explained. “It is always a very memorable night and our guests always dig deep and give generously to support our local charities.
It will include a four course gourmet lobster surf and turf dinner, prepared by the award-winning chefs from The Rib Room Steakhouse and Grill along with complimentary wine, lager and beer throughout the night.
“Once again we are supporting Daisy Chain this year, it’s a really worthy cause which does so much to help families of children with autism, and it’s fantastic to be able to help in this way to improve the lives of people in the region.”
Shalamar, who had hits throughout the 70s and 80s including A Night to Remember, Friends, I Can Make You Feel Good and There It Is, will be getting guests on the dancefloor, while further entertainment will come from six-piece band Sally Army and swing favourites Shakedown.
The evening also includes a fashion show featuring the clothes from Durham’s awardwinning Woven Gentlemen’s Outfitters and Newcastle-based Love Niche
They follow a long line of stars who have appeared at previous events including former M People vocalist Heather Small, 80s pop heroes Go West and R&B sensation Jocelyn Brown. 22 | Middlesbrough Today
