MAYOR CONFIRMS BUS STATION TO STAY IN TOWN CENTRE MIDDLESBROUGH will keep its central Bus Station – that’s the pledge from Mayor Dave Budd. The terminus – one of the region’s busiest transport hubs – remains a key part of major plans to transform the city centre. Long-term proposals include the creation of a Teesside Media and Innovation Village which would incorporate the current Bus Station site. Mayor Budd has reassured local residents and bus users that a modern central bus station will form part of any major overhaul. He said: “Middlesbrough is changing rapidly, with investors and developers keen to play a part in transforming us into the city centre of the Tees Valley. Middlesbrough Bus Station is a gateway into our city centre and is a regional transport hub. We have had that for 35 years and we will keep that, either in a new building, or in the existing one.

Water Babies Tees Valley makes a splash This summer around 1,000 babies from across the Tees Valley have taken to the water as part of a Splashathon fundraising campaign, organised by Water Babies Tees Valley. The region’s children took to the pool to swim a ‘splashy width’ to raise an incredible £13k, and counting, for Tommy’s Charity, a national charity that funds research into premature births, still births and miscarriages, and provides pregnancy health information to parents. Across the week babies and their parents, wearing their finest pirate outfits, took part in events across Middlesbrough. Pamela Hargreaves, Managing Director of Water Babies Tees Valley, said: “It was a fantastic week, we’re over the moon and thrilled to have raised so much money in support of such a fantastic charity. We set out with the hope to raise £15k for Tommy’s Charity and manage to smash that target and raise an incredible £20k. “I’ve been so overwhelmed by the support from our parents and the amazing amount of effort they have all put into making their incredible pirate costumes, from Captain Jack Sparrow to Tinkerbell. Every child
Rowan Mooney, George Mallinson, Alice Mason, Oliver Allen, Ange Coats and parents
should be able to swim and having these classes from such an early age, puts children so far ahead and gives them the vital life-saving skills from even just a few months old. “Our youngest ever swimmer was only 10 days old, but the majority of babies start swimming with us at around three months until they are around four. It’s never too early or too late to start.” Parents interested can find Water Babies in11 pools across Tees Valley all the way from Hartlepool, Middlesbrough and Stockton to Yarm, Stokesley and Redcar. TEES PRIDE 10K HAILED A RUNAWAY SUCCESS THEY came, they saw... they conquered the thirteenth Tees Pride 10k. A huge field of runners, walkers and charity fundraisers – the biggest for five years – took part in this flagship event based at Acklam Hall. The Taylor Wimpey Middlesbrough Tees Pride 10k drew nearly 3,000 entries, while the Cleveland Centre 3k Fun Run clocked up an impressive 600. First home in the men’s field was Paralympian Ethiopian Wondiye Fikre Indelbu in 30.52, followed by Middlesbrough’s own Jonny Taylor, in 31.09 and Richard Allen in 31.36 in third. South African ultra-marathoner Gerda Steyn took the women’s title, crossing the line in 36.14, followed by last year’s fastest woman Tracy Millmore in 36.45, with Joanna Zakrzewski taking third place in 37.05. Simon Lawson took the honours in the wheelchair race, followed home by Callum Hall and Australian Tian Bosch. Everyone Active Events Manager and 10k Race Director Jimmy Wattis said: “It was a fantastic day, and I’m grateful to everyone who took part and all those who turned out to cheer them on for creating such a great atmosphere.
There was also a wide array of international and local performers across the weekend. Sponsors included Unison, Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland Barry Coppinger and Ashall Projects.
A PIONEERING care home – believed to be the first of its kind in the UK – has officially opened in Middlesbrough. Residents at Fountains Court will be able to go to the movies, pop into the Post Office to post a letter and grab a bite to eat at an American diner. There’s a Victorian-style tea room and even a pub at the residential complex in The Pastures at Coulby Newham. The residential home is based on a model that has proved successful in Holland, and is expected to pave the way for the next generation of provision in this country. Fountains Court will specialise – although not exclusively – in residents with dementia and Alzheimer’s.The purpose-built 42-bedroom care home is designed around a working period street scene complete with six operational shop fronts, a curiosity shop window display, a central fountain, a working red phone box and traditional street lighting.
“Days like these really put Middlesbrough on the map and help to create the sort of memories that last a lifetime.” Councillor Lewis Young, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member with responsibility for sport development, said: “The Tees Pride 10k embodies the community spirit that makes Middlesbrough special, and draws people from far and wide.
The aim is to offer a much more interactive environment with a greater variety of communal space than is typically provided in standard care homes and a range of experiences are on offer including a fully fitted hairdressing salon, a small spa experience with massage chair for pamper treatments and a personal movie room based on a traditional theatre. The Captain Cook pub won’t be licensed to sell alcohol – but the pictures on the walls promise a trip down memory lane for regulars. Proprietor George Dixon said: “Fountains Court is a new concept which we believe will change the way residential care is provided in this country. “The interactive setting is designed to be much closer to ‘normal’ life, giving them a greater sense of well-being and independence. A LITTLE CORNER OF THE OUTSKIRTS OF DARLINGTON IS THE UNLIKELY HOME OF ONE OF THE UK’S HOTTEST CHEFS...
It says something about the high regard that the culinary industry holds chef James Close in that on a bank holiday weekend his restaurant is buzzing with the great and the good of the cookery world. Every inch of The Raby Hunt – the two Michelin starred restaurant run by James in the tiny village of Summerhouse – is literally awash with top chefs.

Michael Wignall, two star chef at Gidleigh Park, cooks up a storm in the new chef’s table area while Larry Jayasekara, of the acclaimed Petrus restaurant, serves up in the main restaurant area. Peter Sanches-Iglesias – another Michelin starred chef from Casmia in Bristol – is working next to Tim Allen, formerly of The Wild Rabbit. And so it goes on – seven revered kitchen masters who all came together for a very special event. Seven Chefs, Seven Snacks was James’ giving back event, raising money for Hospitality Action. A huge success when it was held last year, this time around he put out the call for other top chefs to come along and create snacks for the ticket-buying public to enjoy, with all the proceeds going to the charity. Of course these weren’t ordinary snacks. Creations like Pigs blood with giancale, curried onion, apple, nasturtium and maple verjus were enjoyed, alongside such culinary wonders as oyster, buttermilk, fennel and lardo or James’ own contribution -retired dairy cow 8 | Middlesbrough Today

“I started off wanting to be a professional golfer,” he said. “But that didn’t really work out so I went to London where my brother was, stayed with him and worked as a labourer. “I suddenly realised that the only thing I was really interested in was food so I thought I might as well do something with that.” His parents then decided to buy a rundown pub – The Raby Hunt – in their near-by village, with the aim of James coming in and running the kitchen.

There were trips to Belgium, Spain, Germany, France, Switzerland and across Scandinavia, soaking up what those at the cutting edge of cookery were doing.
“But you can’t move forward as a chef if you are just doing the same thing, you need to be constantly developing and growing.”
Gradually his new dishes found their way on to the menu – and met with an overwhelmingly positive reception by visitors.

MEET THE MAKER: James Gormley
A Darlington artist is seeing his dreams come true after receiving a major commission.
Middlesbrough Today | 11
A former Darlington artist is celebrating after receiving an art commission from the NHS in Cornwall. 37-year-old, James Gormley, who now works as a staff nurse at Royal Cornwall Hospital’s Accident and Emergency department in Truro, started discovering his art during his teenage years in Darlington, where he studied A-level Art at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College.
“When I was around 17 years old, I made a lot of friends at college and the subculture we grew up in which included shared interests in skateboarding, surfing and music helped me to discover my own artistic style,” said James. 12 | Middlesbrough Today
“I’ve always enjoyed art but getting to know a lot of the bands and gig organisers from the North East music scene led me to my first commissions as an amateur artist. “I was regularly tasked with designing the posters and flyers for the band nights held at Darlington Arts Centre and would proudly watch as the finished products were posted around town, given out across college and handed out in local pubs.” Following James’ initial hometown success, he went on to pursue a lifelong dream as a surfer in Cornwall at the age of 18, along with some of the friends he had met at college. Since the move in 1998, James has gone on to develop his artwork; taking inspiration from the Cornish coastline and beaches which he made his home. “Over the past ten years, I’ve really started getting back into my art and a lot of the inspiration has come from my avid love of surfing, meaning many of my pieces are heavily influenced by the beautiful beaches of Cornwall,” he said.
“I’ve continuously developed my style and would now describe my paintings as beach-inspired, bright and colourful – but most importantly, all of my art is created in a bid to put a smile on people’s faces.” And James’ bright and colourful artwork will certainly be helping to put a smile on more people’s faces, as the NHS in Cornwall has commissioned him to create four large pieces for the hospital he works at. “I was commissioned to create four large pieces for the paediatric department, in order to brighten up the space and make it a more welcoming environment for children,” said James. “The last inspection by the Care Quality Commission said that the department looked “too clinical” and wasn’t “child friendly enough”, therefore I was brought in to help change this.
department and nurses and sisters at the hospital are telling me that images of the artwork are being shared and liked across social media, with conversations starting up and people asking for my contact details - so that’s a huge positive.” James has been working on the four commissioned pieces outside of his full-time role as an accident and emergency staff nurse and says that art is a “brilliant way to unwind after a hard day at work”. However, despite loving his current role, James said: “I’d love to pursue a full time career as an artist. “Art is something I love to do and my plans for the future include gaining more exposure, taking on more commissions and developing a strong portfolio.”

AUTUMN FEAST OF DRAMA, COMEDY & MUSIC AT MIDDLESBROUGH THEATRE MIDDLESBROUGH Theatre has announced an amazing Autumn Season for its 60th anniversary. One of the first shows is heart-warming feel-good comedy Dirty Dusting on Saturday, October 7 starring Crissy Rock, Leah Bell and Dolores Poretta. Gladys, Elsie and Olive are three cleaning ladies who are about to be ‘put out to pasture’ by their over-zealous office manager Dave. Feeling they have little chance of gaining employment elsewhere, the ladies have to boost their falling income. A chance wrong number requiring a sex chat line rings into the office and gives them a great idea – ‘why not run a sex chat line?’
After all, their age and appearance won’t matter on the telephone and providing they can keep this a secret from their boss….they could be onto a winner!! But needless to say……things don’t go entirely according to plan! Looking for a Family Show? Touching, funny and utterly original, Scamp Theatre’s delightful adaptation of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s Stick Man comes back to Middlesbrough Theatre on Sunday, October 8 and Monday, October 9. How will Stick Man ever get back to the family tree? This one sells out quickly so don’t delay in booking your seats! Top television comedian Jimmy Tarbuck OBE swaps The London Palladium for Middlesbrough Theatre on Sunday, November 19 with a show which promises comedy for grown-ups rather than adult comedy.

Askham Bryan College Askham Bryan College delivers landbased further education throughout Yorkshire, Cumbria and the North East. Courses include animal management, engineering, horticulture and veterinary nursing. The latest addition to the college’s range of campuses is Stewart Park in Marton, Middlesbrough. The park consists of 120 acres of parkland, including mature woodland and two lakes which provide a habitat for a variety of species, including bats. Farm animals including fallow deer, llamas and goats are kept at the park for people to visit and the Education and Events Officer based at the Bolckow Centre is responsible for ensuring that a broad range of heritage and educational activities accessible to members of the public are organised throughout the year. Following a successful Heritage Lottery Fund application, the Grade 2 listed building known as the Central Lodge is currently being refurbished and will reopen as
Askham Bryan College’s principle landbased education centre in the Tees region in September 2017. In the 1800s, the park belonged to Henry Bolckow. Bolckow was Middlesbrough’s first MP and Mayor and was a key figure in the region’s iron and steel works. His Victorian manor Marton Hall was built at Stewart Park between 1854 and 1856 and was added to dramatically in 1867. The refurbishment coincided with Prince Arthur’s visit to the region, as he was invited to open the park Bolckow created in the late Prince Albert’s – Arthur’s father – name. Marton Hall was demolished in 1960 and due to a fire during demolition – the cause of which is still unknown – all that remains is a stone loggia, as well as the Hall’s accompanying building, the Central Lodge. This building housed workers such as the dairy maids, laundry maids, gardeners and stable boys and features a coach house, laundry, cow byre and stables. The Lodge will be reopening in September as classrooms, common rooms, offices and a library for Askham Bryan College. Part of the Heritage Lottery Funded project is to create a blog and digital archive in order to record the renovation process and capture life at Stewart Park through the eyes of its employees. We also post images and videos on social media daily to show the progress each day and to advertise the opportunities to get involved with the project. Askham Bryan College at Stewart Park offers free heritage talks to schools and community groups. These hour long sessions cover the history of Stewart Park from the birth of Captain Cook right up to

the 2017 renovation. There is also a chance to handle some of the artefacts found in the building. Once the building is open, history tours will be available. These are free to attend and will most likely occur on evenings, weekends or out of term time. We are looking for volunteers to help us lead these history tours. “The history of this park and especially in the Central Lodge is incredible and I feel very privileged to be a part of this project in order to share this heritage with the people of Middlesbrough.” – Lauren Watson, Marketing Officer at Askham Bryan College at Stewart Park. 24 hours in Amsterdam
Shannon Hodge explores both the cultural and cheekier side of the Netherlands’ capital… “You’re going to Amsterdam with your mum?” everyone said. “It’s not really the type of place you go to with your mum, is it?” Well, after a fun-filled 24 hours of canal cruises, pancakes, cocktails, tittering like children in the sex museum, rapidly trying to avoid eye contact with the working ladies of the Red Light District and then learning about the background of said ladies in the Red Light Secrets Museum of Prostitution - I can quite honestly say that going to Amsterdam with my mum was an absolute hoot. 20 | Middlesbrough Today
After booking bargain flights on a whim less than a month before, we were eager to explore what “the Dam” had to offer and we weren’t left disappointed.
double-decker train towards Centraal Station, where we then had a short fiveminute walk to our hotel, Inntel Hotels Amsterdam Centre.
With beautiful canals, streets and buildings spattered in glittering lights and an endless amount of shops including tourist stores selling clog slippers, street vendors selling the famous “frites” with sauce, and not forgetting the legendary C&A - which mum was overjoyed to learn was still available in the Netherlands – we were keen to squeeze as much in to our 24 hours as possible.
The hotel staff were lovely upon checkin and circled all the Amsterdam hot spots on a map for us before sending us up to our snazzy four-star room.
After completing our full day’s Fitbit target walking from one end of Schipol airport to the other, we hopped on the
Naturally, the room was spacious and clean but my favourite part had to be the toiletries - in which they provided the usual shampoo, shower gel and soap but also provided a sewing kit, pampering bath crystals, a vanity kit and a shoe shining sponge - what more could you want? There was also a fully stocked mini bar which you could purchase things
from but the hotel’s close proximity to Dam Square meant that you could stuff your face for a whole lot cheaper by venturing out. Our first stop after checking in at the hotel was a canal cruise. For nine euros each, we got an hour cruise on the canals, where our lovely Dutch driver told us some facts about Amsterdam, including how the houses are so narrow that they have a hook at the top of each house to tow furniture to different floors through the windows. After the oh-so cultural canal cruise, we decided to embrace the cheekier
Exploring museums is hefty work, so Dutch pancakes, better known in Amsterdam as pannenkoeken, were definitely on the cards. We stopped at the first place we came across, which was conveniently called Pancakes! and can be seen in huge letters when you leave Centraal Station. One word AMAZING. After our quick snack stop we decided to do a little more exploring and just so happened to walk right into the Red Light District (really, it just springs up on you.) The Red Light District was an experience in itself – with women and trans-women of all ages, sizes and races stood in front of their well-lit windows trying to collar those passing by. Those interested in learning more about Amsterdam’s working girls, like we were, can head to the Red Light Secrets Museum of Prostitution, which is also based in the Red Light District.
side of Amsterdam by heading to the Sex Museum at Damrak - enticed by its four-euro price tag. I don’t know what I was expecting when we entered but I was quite taken aback at how full-frontal it really was. After seeing more sex pictures and promiscuous mannequins than I care to count and posing with a giant penis statue, I can safely say we resembled giggling children in our first sex ed talk. If nothing else, the Sex Museum was a hilarious visit and definitely worth going for its purse-friendly price tag.
Without giving too much away, the museum was based in what used to be a brothel, in which a prostitute was murdered by a client. Entry for the museum is 8 euros and the audio tour, which was narrated by a Netherlands working girl of 15 years, could be bought for an additional 1.50 euros.
The museum was incredibly insightful, giving facts and figures on human trafficking, interactive sections on what a typical brothel bedroom and “play room” looks like, as well as what it’s like to be stood in a Red Light District window as real passers-by look at you from the street below. The museum also features documentary-style videos and a memorial to those whose lives have been taken working in the brothels. After a busy afternoon and evening exploring, we headed back to the hotel for a cocktail or two before calling it a night. The following day, our final few hours before our flight home were spent exploring Amsterdam’s shops – with Coolcat, HEMA, de Bijenkorf and Drake’s Boutique being firm favourites. Finally, after a jam-packed 24 hours of fashion, food and frolics, we were ready for home but don’t worry Amsterdam, we’ll be back...
