LOCALNEWS KEY NEW MEMBERS JOIN MIDDLESBROUGH CULTURE TEAM THE team driving forward Middlesbrough’s vibrant and burgeoning cultural scene has welcomed three key new members. The trio will be instrumental in developing a music, arts, entertainment and museums offer that makes Middlesbrough the entertainment and leisure focal point for the Tees Valley and the wider region. And they will play a key role in driving forward the bid for Tees Valley City of Culture 2025. Lorna Fulton joins Middlesbrough Town Hall as Head of Programmes following the historic venue’s 21-month and £7.7m refurbishment funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Middlesbrough Council. Lorna brings more than 20 years’ experience to her new role as a programme director and producer, including delivering the Cultural Olympiad in the North East and directing the SO outdoor arts festival in Lincolnshire. Matthew Storey takes up the reins as Head of Transformation for Middlesbrough’s everpopular museums, including the Dorman and Captain Cook Birthplace.
He joins the Middlesbrough team from Sunderland City Council where he was Project Manager for Sunderland’s Historic High Street Heritage Action Zone, an initiative which aims to stimulate economic growth through heritage-led regeneration. Middlesbrough-born artist and writer Gordon Dalton steps into the new role of Creative Factory Producer, supporting artists and the development of the visual arts sector in Middlesbrough. Gordon has worked for a wide range of organisations and projects including Cardiff’s shortlisted bid to be European Capital of Culture and the Plymouth Art Weekender. Charlotte Nicol, Middlesbrough Council’s Head of Culture, said: “Middlesbrough’s cultural scene is incredibly exciting and we’re really lucky to be part of a wider commitment to culture in the Tees Valley, bidding for the City of Culture 2025. “Lorna, Matthew and Gordon are exceptional talents and I’m thrilled to be working with them.” Councillor Mick Thompson, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive member for Culture and

RAMPS UP WITH MINISTERIAL VISIT TO DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION SITE A senior Treasury minister responsible for economic growth in Tees Valley has visited the South Tees Development Corporation site to learn about the area’s “transformational opportunity” for local people. Robert Jenrick MP, Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, met with Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen and members of the Development Corporation board, where he learned of the 25-year vision to create 20,000 jobs and drive an additional £1billion per year into the local economy. Mr Jenrick is the latest Treasury minister to travel to the site of the former SSI steelworks and throw his weight behind the project, after a visit by Liz Truss MP, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, in June. It also follows an important intervention by the Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond MP who awarded the Development Corporation site £123million in last year’s Budget, and whose letter to the Governor of the Bank of Thailand played a 4 | Middlesbrough Today
“crucial role” in laying the groundwork for negotiations with the Thai banks to secure the land. Tees Valley Mayor and Chairman of the South Tees Development Corporation, Ben Houchen said: “As part of my Treasury charm offensive, I’m delighted to welcome yet another Government minister to the Development Corporation site. “Thanks to Robert and his colleagues, we’ve managed to secure an agreement in principle with the Thai banks to take back control of the SSI land, and have been awarded £123million to kick-start remediation work. “While we’re making progress with the Thai banks, I’ve made it crystal clear that we’ll compulsory purchase the site if the final deal isn’t signed soon. We have investors lining up and ready to go, but we just need the land – it’s the final piece of the jigsaw. “The visit was a fantastic opportunity to present our case to the Minister for a package

of financial support in time for next year’s Spending Review. With a bit more help, we will be able to accelerate the transformation of the site and allow us to unlock private sector investment and bring thousands of jobs back to the region.” Speaking on the visit, Mr Jenrick said: “We are investing in improving connectivity, strengthening skills, supporting enterprise and innovation, and promoting trade – building an economy that works for everyone, and making Tees Valley an even better place to live and work. “This area has a key role to play in the new economy and, by working closely with local leaders such as the mayor Ben Houchen and Simon Clarke MP, we will ensure the Northern Powerhouse continues to boost growth and productivity across the country.”
A novel idea for BloomInArt A Hartlepool school has enlisted the help of a local group of artists and well-known literary characters to encourage young people to read.
school where children could read as part of a group or somewhere they could spend their playtimes/ lunchtimes in a nice quiet place reading.
Eldon Grove Academy has been working with BloomInArt to develop a specialised reading area complete with the children’s chosen literary characters.
Every pupil from the school was invited to take part with around 100 pieces chosen to be incorporated into the final design.
From Harry Potter and Marvel to the classic Roald Dahl and Beatrix Potter, pupils have been inspired to create a stained-glass effect design using vinyl. The vinyl design will decorate the reading hideaway’s ceiling, whilst seating areas will be covered in bespoke cushions incorporating the pupil’s literary designs. Karen Scorer, Art Coordinator from Eldon Grove Academy, said: “One of the things we’ve been looking at as a school is how we encourage reading with the children. There is already a reading shed on both yards, but we wanted something within the

National Charity Serves Up Free Tennis Sessions in Middlesbrough National sports charity ‘Tennis For Free’ has served up an ace for Middlesbrough by investing in a year-long programme of free tennis sessions hoping hundreds of people across the area can make a racquet at the tennis courts at Albert Park. In an exciting partnership Middlesbrough Council, Tennis For Free will help provide free coach-led
tennis sessions for all the family. The official launch was on Saturday 8 September and is now on every Saturday between 10-11:30 and everyone is welcome. NEW DRIVE FOR BUSINESSES TO HELP SHAPE TEES VALLEY’S FUTURE Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen is calling on ambitious members of the local business community to help deliver economic transformation across the region. Mayor Houchen is leading a fresh drive for visionary representatives from companies in our area to join the Tees Valley Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) board and ensure an active and diverse group which reflects our breadth of businesses and professionals. The LEP, chaired by former Sabic Chairman Paul Booth OBE, works closely with the wider business community and other partners to drive forward economic growth and job creation in the area. It works in partnership with Mayor Houchen, the Tees Valley Combined Authority, and the five Council Leaders. Middlesbrough Jazz Weekender will showcase The National Youth Jazz Orchestra, newly reformed Tees Valley Youth Big Band and MOBO-nominated/Mercury Prize nominees Roller Trio on Friday, October 19 at Middlesbrough Town Hall. Nominated for MOBO’s Best Jazz Act in its 17th award ceremony watched by over one million viewers, Roller Trio were also nominated for a Mercury Prize with their
eponymous debut studio album in the same year. Built from sound fragments of Leeds nightlife formed and reformed through the musical intelligence and instrumental brilliance of the three musicians it’s an exhilarating, rollicking ride. BLIND BOy PAXTON to PLAY Middlesbrough town hall A RISING star of vintage blues is bound for the newly restored historic Courtroom at Middlesbrough Town Hall. Jerron Blind Boy Paxton’s gig on Monday, November 12 is the latest in the venue’s Courtroom Sessions series of Americana acts in partnership with The Jumpin’ Hot Club. Paxton performed to a sold-out audience at the Lead Belly Tribute Concert at Carnegie Hall, New York in February 2016 along with Buddy Guy, Eric Burdon, Edgar Winter, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and other stars. MAYOR TRAINS WITH JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE TEAM TO MARK BID MILESTONE To mark Tees Valley’s bid to host Rugby League World Cup 2021 games passing its first major milestone, Mayor Ben Houchen took part in a training session with a local junior club. Mayor Houchen met Yarm Wolves’ undernines team at Yarm Rugby Club for a training session, where the team hit the pitch for passing drills. Ready, Teddy, Go! With Zoë’s Place Calling all businesses to get on your bike for Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice and have some fun while peddling for pounds for your local charity.

hether you are a business with two or two hundred employees and whether you are the MD or the receptionist Zoë’s Place would love you to dust the cobwebs off your bike and take on the challenge of riding for them. Teams can peddle from branch to branch, office to office, to customers and supplies or just devise your own routes to enjoy the challenge and even finish your ride at Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice. Launched at The Cleveland Centre, Middlesbrough with the charity’s great supporters Gary Philipson, BBC Tees and local business Doornbos who have already signed up for the challenge and have pledged a team who will cycle from its head office in Rotterdam to its UK site in Billingham. Each year, it costs Zoë’s Place around £1.5 million to provide free care for infants and their families.

Runners, walkers, and fundraisers we are proud of you! Youngsters, families and seniors put their best foot forward and conquered the fourteenth Tees Pride 10k. Around 2,300 runners of all ages and abilities took part in the flagship event on Sunday (2 September), which is based at Acklam Hall. The event has again been hailed a runaway success, with the main road race and 3k Fun Run attracting nearly 3,000 entrants from across the region. Runners passed through some of the borough’s most iconic sites along the fast
and flat course, with local residents lining the streets to cheer on the participants, while they enjoyed musical entertainment along the way. Fundraisers flooded the streets, many in fancy dress. As they crossed the finish line, participants were rewarded with medals and commemorative T-shirts to mark their achievement. Councillor Lewis Young, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive member with responsibility for sports development, said: “The Tees Pride 10k Run is an event that has really captured the public’s imagination. “It continues to go from strength to strength, and its ongoing popularity with runners and charity fund-raisers has made it a landmark fixture on the regional calendar.

Soap in the Cinema Soap in the Cinema will allow select audiences to get up close to some of the actors behind the characters we all know and love, across all the UK soaps. A unique stage show format being held exclusively in Odeon Cinemas, with iconic moments never seen before - on the big screen, Soap in the Cinema promises to offer soap-fans 90-minutes of inimitable and exclusive entertainment. The shows will be presented by BAFTA winning producer and writer, Tony McHale, who as an actor killed Ernie Bishop in ‘Coronation Street’ and then went onto murder many characters as a writer in EastEnders. To complete the formidable duo of hosts is actress Debbie Arnold, the only actor to appear in Corrie, EastEnders, Hollyoaks and Emmerdale as a regular character. She also remains the only person to appear in two soaps simultaneously when she starred as April Branning in EastEnders and Janice Bolton in Hollyoaks. Soap in the Cinema commences in October 2018 and over the following 12 months there will be a total of 24

Using a pool of over 20 of our biggest soap legends – each event will see Debbie and Tony host a chat show style format, present iconic clips on the big screen, as well as pre-recorded inserts from a galaxy of soap stars. The tour of Odeon Cinemas commences in Manchester on Sunday 14th October at the Great Northern. This is followed by three more shows in 2018; Darlington (28th October), Southampton (11th November) and Brighton (25th November). Each show will be followed by a party for our VIP guests. The Darlington line-up is made up of EastEnders’ John Altman and Sid Owen, Coronation Street’s Brian Capron and Sherrie Hewson, Emmerdale’s Chris Chittell and The Archers’ Tim Bentinck. BEING DAVID ARCHER Bronia McGregor caught up with Tim Bentinck ahead of his appearance at Soap in the Cinema in October. The longest running radio soap series in the world, The Archers has kept listeners riveted for more than six decades with its topical scripts and captivating portrayal of modern life in rural Britain. And one man who has seen his fair share of drama in the fictional village of Ambridge is Tim Bentinck, who has played David Archer in the show since joining the cast in 1982, despite never having listened to the programme before his audition. “When I first started I was joining part of a tradition,” explained Tim. “These were seriously famous actors because they were famous before television and radio actors were the massive stars at the time.” And Tim admits that when he first took the role, he could not have imagined he would still be part of the programme 36 years later, with David Archer becoming an integral part of Tim’s life. “I have people coming up to me and asking about my daughter and I actually have two sons so it becomes apparent that they’re asking about David’s life,” admits Tim. And it’s not just fans that get the two confused, as he recently found when performing in a play at the Edinburgh Fringe festival. “I was doing a show called Brexit with Jo Caulfield where she played an EU rep and I was the Prime Minister, Adam, and she called me David live on stage. “We just sort of looked at each other and went ‘what happened there?’” Although Tim has a voice millions of people listen to every evening, he admits it is rare that he gets recognised purely on his voice. “Nobody knows what you look like so it can be a huge surprise to fans of the show,” he admits. “I have sometimes been introduced to people who have listened to The Archers for years and they do a triple take and almost fall over because I’m not what they expected.” When he isn’t playing David, Tim has undertaken a range of stage, film and TV roles, as well as voice acting, including being the voice of TEFL tapes, video game
characters and even the ‘mind the gap’ warning on the London Underground’s Piccadilly Line for 15 years.

ANOTHER FAD DIET? NOT THIS TIME… Dr Aria’s programme aims to not only help people lose weight, but keep it off too. Bronia McGregor finds out how it works.
D
ieting advice can be mind-boggling, with the media telling everyone to limit their portions one minute, then being encouraged to pile their plate high with food loaded with sugar and carbs the next. With so much contradictory – and sometimes just plain confusing – diet advice out there, it can be difficult to keep up with which foods are bad and which are good when it seems like even the experts are changing their minds every two seconds. But Dr Aria Campbell-Danesh believes that no diet works on a long-term basis and that’s why he offers a different approach to weight loss, one that focuses on helping people keep the weight off after they’ve lost it. As a behaviour change psychologist and creator of the F.I.T. (Focused Insight Training) method, Dr Aria’s programme goes beyond the fad diet to create positive, everyday changes tailored to a person’s lifestyle. “Making healthy choices doesn’t have to be difficult and many people I work with are surprised at how quickly they notice a difference just from changing a few bad habits,” said Dr Aria. 18 | Middlesbrough Today
“For example, if people find they often snack at a certain time, perhaps when they get in the house from work, then doing something productive instead like going for a walk at that time distracts the mind and changes the habit.”
Dr Aria believes that being distracted by other activities while eating means that the brain is unable to form an accurate memory of the food being eaten in the first place, which means that people will be tricked into feeling hungry again sooner.
Dr Aria has worked with clients of all different ages, body types and abilities, including some top Hollywood and sports stars.
This is backed up by a recent study in the British Journal of Nutrition which found that overweight women who were played audio distractions encouraging them to pay attention to their food at lunchtime reduced later snack consumption by 30 per cent.
By looking at people’s mindsets and their emotional attachments to food and weight loss, Dr Aria’s programme works to transform the way his clients think about food to develop new, positive habits around eating and exercise. “People might find that they lose weight quickly by undertaking an intensive fitness programme or restrictive diet, but it’s not sustainable,” warns Dr Aria. “Then, when people begin to put weight back on, there’s often a negative emotional reaction that they’ve failed to maintain it, coupled with a total loss of motivation. “People are much more likely to lose weight healthily and keep it off if they are making small, manageable changes that become second nature in their day-to-day life.” Those looking to shed some pounds may be surprised at one of the factors that may be causing them to overeat without them realising.
“Many of us are guilty of sitting down with a meal and reaching for the remote or snacking while we go through the apps on our phone,” said Dr Aria. “But engaging in this behaviour means that you are diverting your attention from what you are eating so the brain is unable to register accurately how much food you’ve consumed.” Instead, Dr Aria advises people to make the effort to sit down at a table to eat – which not only makes people more conscious of what they’re choosing to eat but also forces them to move away from a TV or computer – as well as eating more slowly and making an effort to notice what food smells, tastes and looks like. A WEEK IN PARADISE Black sand beaches, stunning clifftop views and a sunset famous all around the world, Bronia McGregor discovers the magic of Santorini. The Greek island of Santorini is a favoured destination by the rich and famous, with Kim Kardashian-West, Emily Ratajkowski and Mariah Carey having holidayed there in recent years. My budget, however, was a lot less than that of Hollywood’s elite, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me from making the most of everything it has to offer. Because Santorini is so small, it’s easy to find somewhere affordable to stay on the island without missing out on the hustle and bustle of the more popular villages in the south. 20 | Middlesbrough Today
So while many people choose to stay in Fira, Oia or Imerovigli, famed for whitewashed clifftop hotels overlooking the caldera, if you look to the east side of the island you will find beautiful beach villages Perissa and Kamari for a fraction of the price. Because we compromised on our location, I had assumed that we would spend the majority of our holiday making the most of the bus that frequently runs between the villages on the island so we could spend most of our time in the more popular Fira and Oia. However, having picked a small hotel in Perissa with an owner who couldn’t do enough for us, we were
delighted to find that the village has its own bustling nightlife and food scene. Forgoing the hotel pool after learning the beach was less than a fiveminute walk away, we spent our days sunbathing on the black sand beach, breaking only to grab a bite to eat from the many restaurants overlooking the sea – and enjoy a cocktail or two. And in the evenings the beachside eateries come alive with music, lights and dancing, so much so that we ended up staying in Perissa for more nights than we chose to venture to other parts of the island.
However, when we did decide to go exploring it wasn’t difficult because Fira and Oia are easily accessible for a small fare and a short ride on the bus. Fira, the island capital, is bustling with both locals and tourists and packed full of shops, bars and restaurants, some situated on the edge of the cliffs with stunning views – especially when the sun begins to set. And if you start off early enough and don’t fancy staying on the bus for an extra stop, then there is a popular hiking trail to take you from Fira to Oia via the picturesque village of Imerovigli. The route, which follows the edge of the island, gives you the time
to appreciate the idyllic landscape you are staying in and you might even walk past a wedding party celebrating at one of the many hotels jutting out from the side of the cliff. If you’re dedicated enough to walk the whole way to Oia then pack plenty of water and snacks as it takes three hours, but until you reach the last part of the walk then there are plenty of places to stop and hail a taxi if it gets too much. And while Fira is the place to go if you’re looking for affordable souvenirs or even nightclubs, Oia is home to designer shops, fine dining
and even Santorini’s only bookshop, Atlantis Books, set up by British graduates in 2004 after they fell in love with the place whilst on holiday. It’s no surprise that Santorini is such a popular destination with the stars, but whether you decide to splash out on a room in Oia, choose a beachside hotel on the east or head to the capital, you would be pretty hard-pushed to leave the island without falling in love with it too.
