ESTLED among the forests and moorland of Northumberland lies the historic Slaley Hall and its sprawling estate.
Tucked away in 1000 acres of landscaped grounds, Slaley Hall is a stunning Edwardian mansion house which has become one of the region’s leading wedding venues.

Located just a stone’s throw away from Hadrian’s Wall, Slaley offers a magical setting for your special day, as old meets new in an ornate and sophisticated setting. Slaley Hall was built in the late 1800s by the Hunting family. Built to the then traditional style of a sporting estate, the house itself was a much larger, three-storey structure with high pointed towers. Situated in rural, unspoilt countryside it had all the hallmarks of the lavish Edwardian houses of the era, and was a place for glamorous shooting and fishing parties. However, this style of entertaining didn’t last, and began to decline following the First World War. By the mid1920s these events were attracting no more than 20 guests at most, and the house was reduced to a more manageable size.

Yet this wasn’t the end of sporting parties at the hall. Guests continued to visit, staying for up to six weeks to shoot, fish and ride horses by day and eat, drink and be merry in extravagant parties by night. In 1947, Slaley Hall was bought by Major Jack Priestman and his wife Christine who dedicated themselves to developing the shooting, hunting and fishing at the estate. They bought additional moorland, investing money into forestry and improving the farms across the estate, putting Slaley Hall right back on the map.
the Priestman – opened, both taking their names from the former owners.
After Christine’s death in 1984, the estate was sold and planning permission was submitted to develop some of the woodland areas into a 140 acre golf course.
The magical charm of its Edwardian history lives on in the lovingly restored old hall, while the newer building has been created to complement its elder counterpart with a modern elegance and high quality finish.

The Hunting Course opened in 1989 and has become one of the UK’s leading courses, attracting players from all over the world. A decade later the second course –
The hotel was extended to the large 141-bedroom venue it is today and it is now one of Northumberland’s leading resorts.
Slaley Hall is now very much established as one of Northumberland’s most idyllic hotels and has become a leading venue for weddings. Our stunning hotel and grounds offers a magical wedding venue no matter how big or small your party may be. We have a choice of rooms for civil ceremonies, a selection of wedding packages and a team of dedicated wedding co-ordinators to help make your day one you’ll never forget.

Throughout the next 40 years, many great sportsmen came to Slaley to shoot, fish and hunt. Following Jack Priestman’s death, these parties slowly ceased and the venue eventually became a place for more peaceful retreats.

Take it from those who know Slaley Hall is the perfect place for your wedding, no matter how big or small, as these recent testimonials show… “We really want to thank everyone who was involved with the day for everything you have done for us. It was an amazing day and went better than we could have possibly hoped. I’m sure we will speak to you again soon as we will definitely be back!” …Sarah and Adam, June 2017
“I got married here Sunday 3 September, a day I will never ever forget. From the moment we arrived we were looked after by the lovely staff at Slaley. Our wedding organisers were fantastic during our wedding day and made sure our day ran smoothly for us they could not do enough for us. I could not fault anything about our day and would do it all again tomorrow – lovely venue and fantastic staff.
Me and my partner got engaged in October 2016 and booked Slaley Hall for May 27 2017. All emails I sent were answered very promptly, every aspect of planning went so smoothly. The wedding day itself, totally amazing, the staff were brilliant couldn’t do enough to help.
The following day myself and husband went into the spa with some of our guests which was also lovely to relax in I would highly recommend this as a wedding venue for any further brides out there”
“Neville was very helpful transporting all wedding items/luggage. James the wedding planner for the day was brilliant, organising every aspect. The barmen/ manager so polite and friendly and the wedding food was fantastic. We thoroughly enjoyed the day. I can’t thank Hannah and the team enough, they made our dream wedding possible, creating amazing memories we will never forget.”
“We would both like to say a massive thank you for all your help over these past months. We really are extremely grateful for all things you have done for us.
As soon as we walked into Slaley Hall we knew this was our wedding venue. The team was fantastic at making sure our day was planned perfectly. On the day events manager Fearne ensured the day ran smooth from start to finish. All of her team were superb in their service to us from setting up a magical room to the amazing food and keeping the sweets flowing in our Pick and Mix table. “The day ran without any hitch because of the hard work the team put in. The venue was absolutely beautiful especially the Japanese garden. The concierge staff were very helpful throughout our stay and on the day of departure, Neville even collected our car and packed all our belongings for us. We can’t thank you all enough for how perfect our day was and we wish we could do it all over again. …Ian Leask, July 2017
…Ashleigh Satterthwaite, September 2017
“Our wedding day couldn’t have gone any better. We had loads of comments from our guests about the wonderful service from all of the Slaley Hall staff. They really did make our day very special. And also thank you again for upgrading our parents’ rooms. They were over the moon with them. “ …Mark, August 2016

If you’re looking for something small and intimate, we highly recommend our Priestman Room. One of our most popular wedding spaces, this elegant room can host up to 64 guests for a civil ceremony in sumptuous surroundings. Styled in traditional Edwardian décor with sage green panelled walls, chandelier and beautiful bay windows boasting breath taking views, couples tie the knot at an altar in front of a large, striking fireplace. As well as being a beautiful place to say your vows, the Priestman Room also doubles-up as a gorgeous smaller space for a wedding breakfast for up to 30 guests. The Hunting Room is slightly larger and will host ceremonies for up to 70 guests or wedding breakfasts for up to 80. With room for several tables for the wedding breakfast, the
When the sun sets it can be skilfully transformed into the perfect evening party venue for live bands, DJs and dancing into the night. And don’t worry if you’re looking to host even more guests. We also offer the option of a marquee near the outside terrace which can cater for around 300 people. We even cater for couples who fancy an al fresco wedding, with our bespoke monument in our ornamental gardens also available for your ceremony. Marquees have become a huge hit with romantic couples looking for something really special for their big day, and we can supply you with everything you could need to make it into a magical wonderland for your day and night. Hunting Room makes the perfect venue for a smaller number of guests, where everyone can feel involved and part of the big day without feeling lost in a big, open space. This year we have introduced our Edwardian drawing room, terrace and golf course, Dukes can host your ceremony and then host up to 60 people for a wedding breakfast. Our largest area is the Kielder Suite, but this is far more than just a big room. It has its own entrance foyer, toilets and private bar and features dramatic chandeliers and high ceilings. THE ICING ON THE CAKE
Image supplied by www.burnett4cakes.co.uk
It’s one of the focAL points of every wedding, so it’s no surprise that choosing your perfect cake can be such a big challenge…
F
ROM traditional tiers, cascades of cupcakes or elegantly piled profiteroles, choosing your perfect wedding cake can be as important as picking the venue or dress. Gone are the days where a traditional three-tier construction of heavy fruit cakes encased in marzipan and hard white icing will do – today a wedding cake can take any form, shape, size or colour. The message is the same. It represents fruitfulness and plenty and cutting it is often the first thing a bride and groom do together as man and wife to show they are truly united. Fruit cake was always popular because of its lasting power and ability to withstand the weight of tiers, but today brides and grooms can choose sponge in every flavour, while cheesecakes – both sweet and savoury - are also growing in popularity.
Whatever the style, size or flavour the message remains the same as it always did –the wedding is far more than a tasty sugarcoated treat; it is a symbol of unity which can be shared with everyone attending your special day.
burnett4cakes
Chris Burnett, Professional Pastry Chef Quality combined with skill, style and expertise
Another big difference in modern wedding cakes is the decoration. More and more people are shying away from the traditional sugar craft flowers. Today’s cakes take their cues from modern culture. Flowers no longer have to look like exact replicas, colours and designs can be mixed and matched to suit individual tastes. Some cakes are elaborately decorated with bright colours and glitter or dramatic sparklers while some offer a more simple approach of swathes of ribbon and fresh flowers. Even icing has changed and evolved over the years. Royal icing is making way for soft fondant or buttercream which can be delicately flavoured or coloured to match the theme. And chocoholics have never had it better. It may have been frowned upon once, but now a fully iced chocolate centrepiece is a perfectly acceptable offering to present to guests. Popular décor choices for 2017-18 include beading, marbleeffect and hand painted, with rainbow cake also now becoming a trendy alternative to plain sponge.

BLOOMING BEAUTIFUL Pretty posies, bursting bouquets and charming centrepieces – a wedding just isn’t a wedding without some floral décor…
F
ROM elaborate bouquet masterpieces to simple wildflower posies, choosing the perfect blooms for your big day is as important as finding the dress.
Your choice of bouquet can say as much about the occasion as the dress or venue, and it can make or break an occasion if you don’t get it right. But like fashion, the trends for flowers change every season and with more and more exotic blooms becoming available, there’s never been a better time to choose your wedding bouquet. The flowers should reflect the theme and tone you are looking to create, as well as match or at least complement the wedding gown and bridesmaids dresses. But they must also work well with your venue. Great flowers can brighten gloomy corners and soften reception rooms, transforming the space into something personal to you for your special day. Some brides base a whole wedding theme around a particular flower while others choose their floral additions to match everything else. It’s important to remember that while colours can lift the mood and enhance an occasion, they can also break it if not chosen well. Blues and violets will struggle to stand out in dimly lit areas while yellow can drain pale complexions. Bright colours like orange may seem a bit over the top, but once looked at as

Our revered golf courses offer the perfect place to take a break from all that planning…
Here at slaley hall, golf is in our blood. We are one of the UK’s leading golfing venues and every year we welcome visitors from all over the world looking to test their golfing brains on two PGA championship-standard courses. Our highly-acclaimed Hunting and Priestman courses offer golfers everything they could possibly need or want from a day on the course, regardless of your skills, ability or requirements. Set amidst our 1000 acres of prime Northumberland forest, the Hunting course is named after Samuel Hunting, the man who first bought the estate back in the 1800s. Described by critics as the ‘Gleneagles of the North East’ the Hunting course was designed by Dave Thomas – renowned for his unique and interesting course designs – and opened for business in 1989. Since then it has played host to numerous European Tour and Senior Tour events as well as the Great North Open and is regarded as one of the country’s greatest courses. The 18-hole Priestman course is the newer of the two and offers a contrasting experience to the Hunting. Designed by Neil Coles, the then chairman of the PGA, it welcomed its first players in 1999. The course itself has a more open feel to it and is a favourite among big-hitters and strategists alike thanks to its selection of challenges.
Regardless of your own level, we have everything you need to enjoy your time on our courses. Tuition at Slaley Hall is brought to you by our head teaching PGA Professional Steve Fawcitt, who is dedicated to improving your game in a friendly learning environment. We have a practice green for perfecting your putting, and our driving range is fully floodlit so you can practice even after the sun has set. We also have a USGA Tour standard short game area, ideal for all year round practice. Inside our private PGA teaching room we can iron out or custom fit your golfing needs using state of art Trackman swing analysis technology. We have a fully stocked golf pro shop packed with brands like Titleist,Taylormade, Hugo Boss, Galvin Green and many more, so you can dress to impress while on the course. And of course, what better way to unwind and relive your triumphs on the course than by topping off the day at the 19th hole? The Claret Jug serves simple, modern food using fresh, quality produce to help you refuel after a hard day. We offer a selection of Pay & Play packages as well as one and two night golf breaks – perfect for a short getaway or just to recharge your batteries after all those busy months of wedding planning.
It’s a large, expansive course punctuated by several water hazards, good bunkers and lengthy fairways and boasts enviable views across the stunning Northumberland countryside.
