RINOR PIREVA
COMPONENT 1
There were some types of buildings that I wanted to look at due to their nature and the way it is made, along with the feel and how the material correlated to the theme. We take these pictures of a city pavilion as we see this vast open space to have a really big structural exterior and a very flow interior theme. In addition the use of wood and the interlocking of the attachments shows the themes of nature and organic, really showing off the material. Also greenery being added to show this effect. The use of open doors but still hidden interior really excited the customer and I will have to look into more detail with this theme and style
To follow on with the research that I had carried out about pavilions I have found another one which I would really like to relate too. This building not only had the themes of natural and organic, but also had the shapes of trees, which are natural and organic forms. This forest like design is really clever as you are able to use some of these as pillars that are needed through the large structure. However what you fail to see from the outside is that it is enclosed off by window. This allowing the pavilion being extremely open and giving a new experience. Yet again however the material is wood and it is also been locked into together, as if it is temporary, however it is extremely strong as it supports itself. Overall this building is really strong, open and also follows the flow theme, with the greenery which I feel is important in the modern creations.
This will be the final type of pavilion I looked at was a very open and it is basically a pavilion shelter, such as one for maybe a sort of park, or little chill area used for people. This can also be a structure or a sculpture and it is easy to see how it was made using the same technique of interlocking the wood, and also the same themes of flow and organic. Seeing all 3 different types of pavilions shows how I am able to use them and manipulate them. Allowing this simple form of interlocking with flow themes shows us, especially interior that even though it is a out of ordinary form, it is still really subtle. In addition throughout all 3 pavilion line drawings I have also draw elevations and also plan views to show how it is structured.
I carried out the same process out with the theme of structure. Without structure I feel that a b building will not be able to stand how it should. In addition the building will always need to have some sort of structure to actually make it believable. From previous drawings we saw that the pavilions where interlocked and inside it had some square like boxes inside. This is why I decided to choose some structural images, again leaving the lines on the images showing the process. However also showing off the process on its own to see the amount of angles there are in a building through the drawings to the right.
In addition I also created the reverse line drawings to create a building. I done this twice with it also having the same background to enhance the idea of it building one building. I really like this type of theme as I feel it is really raw and angles like this can also be created through flow, even though they are very different and in contrast, they can work together
Moving a step forward with my designs I wanted to really understand some of the themes that I have chosen. The reason for this research is so that I can understand what it is meant for a “flow building. People I instantly though of where of course Zaha Hadid however I decided to choose a couple buildings and structures I felt had this theme. Using this really visible red line drawings removes all type of illusion types of shades or curves. I have left a line outline on the drawing to the left to show the process. In addition I have removed completely the background of three of the buildings and you can really understand the structure behind the building, which I feel really helps to understand the theme better. In addition I took a flow structure as you can see in the bottom left hand corner, and reflect the line drawing to make it out to be some type of sky scraper. I really like the idea of a flow theme and I feel that I will want to use this type of theme on the exterior, as I feel that it really works well with the idea of a pavilion and the two really correlate. This is through the secondary images previously and they are really flow like and natural, allowing a illusion of massive space.
For my next inspiration I decided to look at more natural and organic style. I really like this type of design because whatever the design, you will still need a good base and ground on the floor and I feel if the building links with the natural surroundings in the form of leaves, honey combs, branches and also the flows of the flowers. I feel that on a small level if these structures support itself that I feel if I scale them up in a sense I can also make a building with the same style. There is also a very big of these structures as you can actually see form the photos which then also means that I am not limited with the design aspect and I can still link my work to other themes to make the client really understand the concept.
This is my final version of the line drawings. I decided to do this for the natural and organic structure because it helps me understand the structure more. Doing this also gives me ideas of how I will actually structure my building and I can link this to the other themes and there is a range of designs, some structural and some flow and this can not only be the actual building but also the natural surroundings.
Negative Highlighting To Explore new and different ways of creating a object, I decided to take photos, whether photoshopped or not and then take them and add my own ideas of how I feel the building is going to carry out or how I would like to see it develop with the one image that I was given. I created 4 different images, varying from evaluations and plan views. Allow this made my understand and also appreciate the information that I was already given. Also the images where taken from airports and also drawing a images I could think the interior will be like allowed me to use actual airplanes as scale. I really liked this model as I felt it was really flow like and I also imagined the interior being of a large scale through the ideas of a big open road leading to the airport.
This also a new type of drawing I wanted to try out which is to really highlight the negative space. Doing this means that I will be able to see in create detail as I feel there is a bigger contrast between the lines. This then allows a new look, but also helps me criticize my work. This method I will definably want to use in future research material. This was achieved by using normal black pen and white paper but then using Photoshop to be able to switch the negative colours and shades round.
Doing this type of style of research again with a different airport allows me to explore a number of different versions. This was more spaced out however it all still works out. We can section this building better that I have put it on this format where is a black background, with white lines and making really stand out. They main basic section where customers wait and shop in the duty free, and also other shops is like a main hub in the centre. Then all the terminals are like a massive ribbon running through in one line. This building shows both aspects of structure and flow. We can see the theme of flow with the top right picture where we have all the glass and flow roof, however supported with the structural poles. One key feature I like is from the bottom left picture where the roof extrudes out in a really flow and natural sense.
For this final airport I really liked it as I felt it had a lot of character to it. I decided since it was a really flow like, however I felt like it needed to have some structure peeping out of the ends. Even the roof was flow like with open window sections and “hill tops. I really like this airport as it looks really big however if we scale it to one of the airplanes it looks like a normal sized airport for a small city. In addition to this, it is all one building head and not sectioned off to which I really like to keep it really compact. The way I see this building is that the entrance is like welcoming arms, and welcoming the different cultures. However the same arms can be said for the terminals where it is letting people explore. It is something like this I will want in my own design. To understand this place more I created what I felt the interior will look like and it was really flow like, which is really calm and needed in a busy place like a airport. Even the support takes up this theme.
These images I feel work the best and actually inspire me to think up of ideas to link and great a brief and select themes. They are a mixture of each section and I feel that some of them actually work well with each other even though in theory they are completely different. To increase my inspiration for what I want in my brief I decided to create line drawings of what it actually already had and chose my most favourite images which I felt described the themes I researched well. These line drawings helps me understand the concept behind then and really simplify it down to its basic form, allowing me to actually see what is going on and possibly how I could use this in the future. It also allows me to see more clearly what the basic functions and also ideas of the themes that I researched, allowing me to make a decision on what to choose based on my The whole exterior research. Spiral stair case made from soaking wood and bending it. Linking it to the natural surroundings outside and also the idea of flow
Lego like stacked building shows off the glass exterior in a structural manner. Often looking more cutting edged and modern. Tis building we can make it out to be a tower as it progressively gets smaller as it goes up.
of the building is in the theme of flow and the structure holding it up is bending like it is a river. The glass helps us see this as it reflects a blue-ish green.
A different type of structural building which again shows off like it is Lego blocks however this time I uses the modern look and merges it within the rocks and cave to connect with the natural and organic environment. Doing so interests people as it has more than one theme
To seek for my next set of insertion I decide to look at different spaces in general. These are commercial space that are real and also concepts. These have all what a commercial space needs, to which is to serve for people and customers who have come to buy or use a product and first impressions of the area that they are in is extremely important. As you can see as well I have chosen images that have linked to the themes that I had recently looked into, which where structure, flow and natural, which all photos have at least one of these. I will take ideas from these images even if I choose not to actually make a commercial space.
Carrying on from the spaces I decided to also have a look at leisure spaces. These spaces are actually a range of different styles and I chose the ones closest to my themes that I looked at and you can see they all have at least one part. These spaces are normally created to serve any function however its also a place where people come to relax and it is a generally a small space. A sense of warmth is developed from these which is why they are called leisure spaces. These spaces work well for their function and I can manipulate it in any ways to work for each theme, and I might take areas of each even if I do not develop leisure spaces.
As before I decided to create line drawings of the images I felt worked best with the theme and possibly this tile for what type of area and function it will serve, whether it is a leisure or commercial space. This is helpful as these images are really detailed and having this process done also enhances my skills but also allows me to see more clearly. This is a wooden polished interior which portrays a really warm and calm mood. This is because of the flow theme it has with the stair cases and also balconies. As it is different levels there are also different sizes and also different flow lines as it interests people and the flow allows people to feel relaxes and this is what the function looks like
These building is really complex and it is like it has been stacked on top of each other. Doing so shows off the structural feel and theme of the building. This is also the reason I did a line drawing so that I can understand easier what is happening with the building. I like this stacking effect as it works well with a plain colour and then adding greenery with it works well as you can see.
This is also really natural and organic influenced however there is some metal structure surrounding it and almost trapping it. Really light colours are used to create a cool and relaxed feel and works well with the wood. This is also a really cool and down to earth leisure centre and connects with the outside world.
More of a spiritual and natural theme to this area. river flows through which means the theme of flow. This is a really limited colour too as it is inside of a cave however the plants surrounding it connects really well with the natural and organic world.
Line drawings like these really help when trying to come up with ideas, or in this case decided to carry on and write a brief with a leisure space or commercial. As we can see they both have qualities that are like each other such as the lights, the amount of darkness in a room and they both focus on what it makes the customer feel like and what they experience.
I decided to carry on with my inspiration and I felt I had enough information to start thinking of areas for my project and what the function of my building is going to be. Previously I was only looking at spaces to which I felt that would look nice to replicates such as the colour ways and scheme. However for the function I feel a petrol station is really good idea as it is something that everyone uses and it would be nice to see that its appealing to the eye. These concepts and designs are really futuristic which I think work well for the function and I also feel that it can link to the themes of flow and structure well. The material also used works really well and the idea of the buildings where the roof extends for the pumps and thus having a building as one big structure I feel is a really good idea.
These are also some concept and actual building of buildings with function. In this case I have decided to look at Sports complex as I feel that these are becoming more increasingly popular. I also feel that because of its size I am able to create something really impressive that will catch your eye. I feel that these buildings that I chose also really represent the themes that I looked at which where structure, flow and natural and I can link these images with at least one of these themes. I also really like that these have a really futuristic look on them however the downside is I feel that they are really enclosed and they only look impressive as a flat building with nothing around it. I can also see that the design goes all the way round like it is wrapping it, however I feel that I can use this but also change it up a little bit to get a contrast.
For the last line drawing, I took the images that worked well not only for the themes, areas, but also no functions such as a petrol station or sports complex. Having this process finalises the couple of images that I like and work well with my thinking, to which could result into something great and unique. It also allows me to see what materials that could be used to create a effect and also lighting, as I feel lighting is one of the most important parts of a build, as it sums up the whole room and you cannot escape light. This next design is a petrol station and it is the roof section. The design is really strange and it has no mathematical side however it is just random shaped metal triangles, like the other petrol station design, however this time they are much smaller and it is almost like building blocks. I like this design as I feel that it creates a really futuristic feel and look to it and it never gets boring to look at as it is different at every angle. In addition the material used reflects all light from the cars, creating a array of interesting lights.
This design of the stadium works really well as it is really structural however with it all together it flows, making it easy on the eye however it is really interesting. With the gaps filled with blacked out glass it also gives a sense of it hiding something inside. I like these straight edges fro the exterior as I feel it does highlight that it is really structural and not only just on the outside but also the supports within the building.
This next design of a stadium is really interesting as it is really structural and geometric. The strange blocks around the stadium have been design really well and mathematical, and as a result it leaves a really structural and futuristic design. Hang this on the outside of what the function of my building will be will work really well as I am leaning towards this structural and straight edged exterior.
This is a really structural design as you can see it is almost made up from different sizes triangles and it is really just stacked on top of each other. As a result it creates many straight edges and points. In addition the material used can be glass or a pattern on a metal to link well with the futuristic feel. It also has a good shape for the petrol station function
Yet again I have done simplified line drawing of the research that I am going. This secondary research allows me to choose when doing the brief for not only themes but also the areas such as sports complex or petrol stations. Depending on what the area is like and how it works depends on what I will choose. In addition I will have to decided what the themes that I will choose and how I will use the themes to create the function I want to make. It also allows me to see how the interior works inside these functions which is really important as I needed to see how it will be supported and how big or small the areas will need to be and having this reference is really useful.
The use of open doors with a cream like colour, with a pool right at the door step exaggerates luxury and is relaxed with lights illuminating everything.
Warm and hot colours with rich wood, roof lighting allowing for extra height.
I decided to look at some luxury spaces that I was interested in and started to play around with the colours a little bit. The reason that I wanted to research these spaces is that I feel if I want to make a exclusive space the first thing I need to look at is luxury. Through this I found out that there are many different types of luxury spaces, ones with relaxation in mind, but also some that are really bold and professional. It really does vary on the function that I want to chose and so far I am looking towards a airport, and as a result I feel that something that will relax my clients will be best. As a result I will need warm type of colours with not many bright spot lights to allow my clients to have a calm and relaxing experience. From playing with the colours I wanted to have it in only warm and cold colours and through this I am able to see what parts are the more important area, as I feel there is sometimes there it too much going on and I just want to simplify it down a little. White, pure, pearl colours showing off level of class and wealth.
Cold and white colours. White for purity and the rich dark wood and spot lights highlighting features.
Taking it a step further for the idea behind the natural and organic theme I decided to take some really basic forms of natural and organic. These however did vary quite a bit as I found out that this theme can also be linked to both themes of flow and structure. we can see this from the images of the bone structure and water droplets, and then the honey comb and tree like structures. I decided to take these images and play around with the shapes, colours, texture and also the warmth. Doing such means I was able to create more abstract versions of these drawings, and in a way simplifying it down. This can be clearly seen in the images with the bone structure , water and honey comb. Dong this then allowed me to create drawings form these in ways that I feel can be used as a building, whether it is a elevation or a plan view. I was able to use it in a number of functions such as skyscrapers, pavilions and maze like complexes. I really like this way of creating something as it is as original as it can get and it really goes open your eyes to what is possible
Specification- Petrol station
•
Enough spaces for a number of cars - this space will be a area that will not only represent the type of building and structure it is under but also be functional. It will be in the exterior however under a roof to safety reasons. This however means I will have to try and merge the two themes of structural and also flow, to see the flow of the interior leak and bleed out into the future.
•
Health and safety preventions – these will have to be bog standard as it will need to be visible however it can be in a casing that will also highlight the safety equipment.
•
Paying desk – this will be in the inside however I might do it so that on they way out in the car there are desks to pay and these can be like little pods along with the theme of structure to go with the main exterior. I think this will go well as it looks like loads of little stations across the area and it will add to the futuristic and structural feel/ look.
•
Snack bar/ food – this will be essential as it will be more than just a petrol station, it is more a bay to stock up on essentials. This snack bar will be medium sizes and have a flow theme towards it as it is the interior. It will be inside the main building but it will need to be blocked off to the paying booths,. I there is one. However is paying bay is outside then the whole area can be a small restaurant and snack bars to buy. This will need to be really functional also however follow this theme, to which it will be a massive contrast to the exterior.
•
Parking – parking will be temporary and will not be something that will be a long waiting time, and thus a small parking area is needed. It will be on the side lines near the main building.
•
Tires/ car wash – this will be a small area for the tire checks for air and water. However the car wash will be a decent size and the interior will be something that cannot be notices however yet again the exterior will be something that links to the main building, and this will then give it the futuristic look as it is divided into different sections that the theme of structure will work well with all of them, not only for looks but also the structure itself.
•
Roof for petrol – this will be part of the building itself and it will almost merge from the main building. This means that it will have the same aspects of the main building for example it will have the structure them to it and then also having this roof merging out will make it look really futuristic and also is will then protect everything underneath and then also create the contrast with the interior.
•
Good entrance (ease of access) – the ease of access will also want people to use and get back out. The entrance can also compliment the rest of the exterior of the building of it being structural and I can find this from things likes other and past structures merged into one.
•
Eye catching – being eye catching is rally important as there is many different competition and petrol stations. This eye catching feature will come form the exterior and entrance as it is mainly based on a structural theme and these can be really interesting and also be something that will drag someone to go there just for the experience. And because there is a number of different services it will also want people to come a little bit more. and angular design to make it look more futuristic.
•
Themes – the interior and exterior will be sections and I will have the interior being a more flow like theme however I will create a big contrast to the exterior as it will be more a structural
Brief- Petrol station • In this century that we live in the majority of people own a car. However for this car you will need a safe place to actually fill up the car and a petrol stations have been around just as long as cars have been, nevertheless with the increase of interesting designs of cars, petrol stations have stayed really simplistic and I feel that they really need to catch up with the modern world. • The basic idea that I will want to use for my concept will be along the lines of a theme of flow and structure to create a big contrast within the building. I will section it off these themes and it will become really clear as I will make it so that the exterior is going to be a more structural design as I feel that there will be a lot of support to hold the building up and as a result showing the structure of it and thus create a structural design such as triangles as not only does it look good, but as a structure it works well. This will be in contrast to the interior as it will be really flow themed like as it feel it makes people more calmed down and also comfortable, and this experience that people are able to do will want them to visit over and over again. • In addition the normal function of the building will be a petrol station. It is something that people of the majority will need to use and most design are really repetitive and the same. Now having a design that will be different and eye catching will want people to come and have a good experience with something that should be really normal. Applying these themes to a simple function will be really interesting and something that is not often done. It will also be multi-use and there will be a number of different reason to come into this petrol station. For example it will have a mini restaurant or bar, depending on how I will use the space for the paying booths, area for parking, area for self service for example tire checks and water. Finally there will be a car wash and all of these that have a roof under will have the same design and will be sectioned off in different areas and this from also plan view will look really interesting as it was something from the future, and this is why I would like to take the general petrol station and modernize it.
Gathering inspirations, themes and style – Exterior
Key: RED – Centre piece/ key feature PINK – Counter top DARK BLUE – Seating area/ tables LIGHT BLUE – Windows GREEN – Support pillars
Do develop new ideas and methods of figure ng out how my airport will be laid out, I have decided to add line drawings, however then sectioning off. What I have done was take some different luxury areas, in this case where I have a luxury dinning area with a busy, bright and pearl place. I only have these 2 images however I have played about with the images and created other angles, and doing so shows and allows me to understand the space much better and see what actually takes to go in a luxury area. We can see from the images it is a really easy on the eye, with high quality materials such as marble, cream seats and large windows and extra spot lights to give it a really good bright surroundings and as a result it really lifts the room up. Having this interesting roof too shows off this flow theme. However one aspect that I will defiantly want to carry out will be the flooring, where it is section off in different shaped triangles. In the different triangles there is different shades of wood and marble and this way I really like how natural and organic comes into play with the flow like marble and structural form of the floor. In addition simplifying it down to the colour keys highlights the important areas that I really like such as the central piece where it can be like a hidden kitchen with a interesting structural design.
Key: RED – Centre piece/ key feature PINK – Counter top DARK BLUE – Seating area/ tables LIGHT BLUE – Windows GREEN – Support pillars I used the same process once again with a completely different type of luxury space. This is a big contrast as it is still has the flow like marble for the flooring however it has some really dark features such as the stone black counter and black walls. I feel like it works really well as it really highlights the gold used, which flows in such a way around the counter, walls and roof. A different concept of flow. In addition this really simplistic way of design I feel is really interesting and is something I will want to take up on. Having a really stealth like design I feel interests people more and grasps peoples interest. In addition I really like this wire mesh structure, it acts like a small barrier for a private function and it really highlights the theme of structure as it uses the structure to hang lights on it. This has been show also in my own images where I use the hanging lights a s illusion to create a higher ceiling.
These are some of the structure themes that I have gathered. The structure theme was one that I thought would be a good idea to have as the exterior as I felt that having these designs would not only support the building but also make it look very futuristic and also create a contrast to the interior. I really like these designs as they can be simply made as we can see some of them are actually origami and if I have these designs on the exterior such as the one I found on the buildings as before I can then link it well. In addition it will connect the natural world through his origami structure. These where some of the line drawing that I actually created and I did this so that I could actually understand the forms a little better such as the origami. I would really like to use this type of interlocking designs as it also gives us a lot of space however depending on the materials we use we can actually make it look busy and also interesting, wanting people to come in. structures like these also give us a sort of illusion as we don’t fully understand what is actually going on and therefore inducing us to go in. I would take the idea also of it having different sections in glass and walls. However I will not create the whole building out of origami structures, only parts of it and use it as sort of a façade on the outside, almost like its giving the customer more information before going in however still confuses and makes them want to go in.
For the interior as stated I will want tot create a more flow like design and these where some of the insertional images that I gathered and thought would work well. The interior with the theme flow included things like having sofas, pillars, desk and counters and these will all be able to relate to the theme. I can make various models too that can be different function to it. This experience to the customer will be really good as most of the time the feel and look of the room can reflect on a customers mood. In addition they are extremely creative designs and can only be replicated once and they also merge with the surroundings as it has this flow aspect, as a result gives the impression of much more room in the space provided as there are not many different individual objects cluttering the room.
Line drawing of the images from the theme flow showed me and let me understand what is actually happening and I quickly picked up that it is really free hand drawings that have been refined as you cannot simply just create these. The use of wires is also really good and the patterns yet again like structures interlock, giving that really good and strong structure to it. Having these designs inside the design will be really beneficial as it creates a good experience to the user as it is something they have never had in their lives but also because the use of contrast within the buildings is immense. However it also made me realise that the exterior having the structure theme makes it look futuristic however these curves follow that aspect in the interior, which means they still link even with 2 different themes to them, as the curves of the interior can also be really futuristic in the design. These deigns also look like they are flowing into the page, showing us the raw beauty of it.
To aid me in my thinking and also inspiration I decided to look a lot more organic and natural occurrence such as leaves, shells and honey combs. Doing so will mean that when I do add it in my work I will actually have a connect to the natural surroundings and even though it is a big contrast with style and material, the patterns used with resemble them. Not only did I do a line drawing I also used water colour as this then allows me to capture the feel and warmth of the object. I thin not only this but I feel that it also has a resemblance to the theme of flow such as the leave veins and also the shell, however it really does work well with the theme of structure as we can see for the honey comb, and as we know it has great strength, but also structure in the shell to how it is formed.
This was a more complex set of skills that I need as I now took one of the drawings and images and enlarged it so that I had a number of different sections that had a large surface area. Doing so allowed me to draw within the areas I did so by using ink colour pens as it allowed me to get tin lines that still captured the true authentic and beauty of natural objects. The first was a leaf and I thought this was a really basic and natural and it allowed me to add in the selected images in a way that I am telling a story. Each section is a different theme and a way it is produced however they will still all link back to the leaf with is a natural form, to which all out materials come from. The same idea comes along with the second form however it is not a natural form, I only used this object as it shows that natural forms still go well with structural objects that are man made.
I thought that looking into some origami would be a really good idea as it has the idea of flow in the mechanics however it is really structural and I feel that it can actually turnout to be a building or maybe certain sections such as window blinds or other little extras. They are really well thought out and thus really well structured and supported, with the cracks and crevasses being supported at every angle it this also then can relate to the natural and organic aspect in the sense of being made from one resource, but also flow in the movement, but also structural in the way it looks. Many different shapes can be made and it is sometimes used in bridges and small structures due to its properties. Due to having structure and flow as themes, I am able to use origami, or at least sections of it such as pillars as well, and use it for the interior and exterior, and in a sense it will have that specific theme, however the contrasting theme still bleeds in a little.
I repeated this step a number of times doing other models to which I could actually use as another function. This origami piece was a more taller structure like and did not have much flow to it, acting in a really structural manner.
The next step of actually using origami was to actually create some myself. Doing so I needed to look up and think of ways to actually create structures that I would need or possibly use for my design. This was my was one of the structures that I had actually created and doing so it gave me a number of ideas. Firstly this could actually be a building I could use and give it a function as it does allow a large amount of space, for example a sports complex, or even the roof of my petrol station. Also it could be selected tiles dotted around the building to break the one material that is used for the whole structure. Outlining it then in red the main focal points allowed me to understand the structure better.
This next step helps me realise the scale of the building and thus me being able to give it a function. For example this can be a either a house but I could enlarge the scale to create a stadium or any other venue. However I think it is best suiting to if I was to make a structural model, I would dot this design in areas to act like tiles. I was able to create a sense of scale with the people that are around the building and also there are trees to help signify the height of a building and further get a better sense of the scale.
Like I said this structure I would have a much taller and thinner structure and use it as a sky scraper due to its good properties in strength but also structural design. It could also be a really shopping complex or department store, to which I modelled out above.
In this design I would give it function of a museum of some sort due to its length, meaning it gives it a really easy to use area as it is quite low too. However I have modelled it differently with it being a more of a shop however not a big shop, just a small outlet as it really does have good features such as the flow in the way it is laid out and the sense of movement but also structural design oh the shapes its made of.
This final structure I felt was a odd shape to give it a function and as a result I feel like it could be a large structure outside a exhibition due to its interesting shape and thus making it eye catching. Though could be a use fro my final project to where I make it to a sign of some sort.
Taking a new approach towards finding a new way to create a design for a building. I decided to take small section of a map with main roads and side roads. Once I print it out I use the main roads to create an outline of a building which can possible used, I will use some thin wire which was created by the river sections, obtaining the flow theme of the project. I did this 4 times in total and decided to take the images an create a outline of the photo details itself. From this I am thinking of using these shapes that I have created I think I am going to use them to be able to create some models. From this I achieve both the themes of flow and structure and originally as these where randomly generated shapes from the resources. Because I am making a airport I felt that the information that I needed to look at was much more broader, as a result I used roads, which are planned, however happens as you go along, more or less like this project.
Taking up some initial shapes that I had created from using these map effects I had created something in a way that I researched which was a pavilion where there was no door entrance but in fact a big structure with shelter. I took I so that in centre piece and open top allowing maximum light. However the main idea for this build was to almost camouflage it within the grass tree and natural surroundings and that is what I have attempted by adding the AstroTurf for some of the segments and this really allows for the natural and organic theme. However we also have a big contrast with the metal mesh and wire to give it the structural effect and applying the structural theme to it, but I really like this contrast as I feel it makes it look really futuristic and has a big impact on the big and boring city scape line behind it.
After using all the different maps that I had selected, I decided to take the final map. This map mainly consisted of really curved lines with no order and it looked like it could be a place that wasn’t in the city. For this reason I wanted to crate a complete contrast of a building to what I felt the place could look like. Firstly I took each and individual line from the map and created a thick wire version of it. This was done with every single line. Afterwards I took some black foam board and traced the map with white calk. Doing so I was now easily able to see the map with this clear contrast, and it would also suit the metallic finish on the wires. Now gluing each and every wire upright basically gave me a really open skeleton, in a way like a pavilion. Afterwards to close some of the gaps so I can actually call it a building I used some metal mesh. I really like this building as it has the structural theme from the material, but also the curvature needed to have a flow theme.
The next step of the process was to actually gather some information about the exterior of a building. I knew it was going to be either a flow design or structural and I started off with only structural. This images are some that I would like to relate to due to is features such as he windows in odd shapes and also extruding walls. Basing it off this would mean I can then have a start in somewhere and use all the information I had gathered about the exterior and form it into one. It also means I can play about as much as I want with the function if I change my mind as I can make it as small or large as I want, and also different shapes depending on the function due to it being so easy to manipulate.
Taking the images that I had gathered I decided to create more line drawings of them, to which it allowed me to study and understand the concept of them further. In addition, understanding the space of them allowed me to understand why it would have been given that function as I was able to point out certain features such as the entrance, height and structure. another ways identifying the windows, doing so allowed me to understand that when I have a structural building I am really free to when it comes to the window shapes and sizes, as it does need to fit in with the building and allow maximum light, which is why I coloured them in red to show much of the building is actually windows. Also it allowed me to see where about these windows are placed, and from the studies I see they are dotted around with different heights to add to the effect of the structural theme. Windows play a big factor as we can se as they play a important role which is allow natural light, and with means I still have the small link to natural feels.
Secondary image models
For this next step of the development I took each structure of the buildings that I looked into and I copied it a number of times and merged it with other buildings to create structures that I would have never of thought of. Using the original photos means that I had every detail and from this I am able to extract certain shapes or images to which will help me with my designs. Without this process I would have never of achieved these images and ideas and as you can see because I use all structural images I end up with all structural forms. I must point out the matter however all of these are secondary images and this process is just to help develop ideas and when I do gather primary images I will just keep adding onto the design.
The next step that I needed to do to carry on with my development was to take out certain shapes and forms that I would have never of directly created. To do this I altered the pictures so that they where 50%b back and white. Doing so allowed me to remove all little details and as a result new shapes and forms appeared. I then coloured them in green to then make them stand out. The idea behind this was to then take theses forms and as a result select a few and enlarge them. Doing so allows me then cut these out in cardboard and I am able to then create buildings and structures that I would have never though of.
These where the final shapes I wish to use for my model as I feel they are structural good and have good shape and surface area to actually create a model and they still allow me to link well with my theme of exterior structure. From these shapes I will print out these shapes on a A4 size for the moment and then cut out these shapes in thick cardboard and from these I am able to create simple models and I will pick and choose aspects that I liked and use in my other models that I will create using the same process however with primary images to get a better sense of originality.
This is the first model that I had actually created by using the cut outs of cardboard. Doing this process allowed me to create models that I would have never of though of or even imagined. Even if I was able to make something as abstract, this certain model still stems down and links well with all the work I have produced. It is a really complex exterior and structural just like how I would like the petrol pump to be like. It has some really large panels which are the main support however also smaller ones to bring everything together and actually create a really good and strong building. I have left some caps on the roof however they will be filled with glass and I have added aluminium string across some of the panels so that it gives a futuristic look but also drags everything together to create a strong building. It really works well with my theme as I feel like it has a main idea behind pointed edges and structural function. Moreover I have use a really tall and big tree as the main pillar of the building. It is located inside the building and more to the edge as it works like a canopies and hold everything in. Also it will have good links with structural as it helps support the building but also links well the natural and organic as this is what a tree is. To add to this around the building I have added some bushes and maybe for the real design to if I was to carry this on I will add vine leaves going up the panels. These larger panels are also being put in place as they can be a good base for the origami structures I had created as textured walls. This ultimately giving a interesting illusion and makes people want to come and visit. Finally around one side of the building I have a added a fence or blockade which has been made with semi transparent material and made by triangles and other structural shapes to stay in link with the main theme. As this is a restaurant within the station I would maybe make a outside area and it will be fences off like this, as this will give privacy. Bushes and trees have been interlocked within to stay with the main themes.
This is my second attempt of making a model from the cut outs. This was more or less the same however they has been some modifications to spring out new ideas. For example I have used new material and this time instead of aluminium wire I have used metal mesh. This is like a really large filter, allowing loads of light however not to much and controls it. A bigger open area was left for this one appose the other model. The use of this mesh was good because it was flexible and it helps bring all the pointed straight edges together and still let the flow theme creep out a little bit. The tree as the main pillar was left again in same place for the structural benefits and also theme links with natural and organic and I will still use the idea as a mini garden around the tree. The mini garden is just so that it shows links with this theme and you cannot actually enter it. This sows that my work clearly still links with interior and exterior even though they are completely different themes. The use of a big entrance from this is a feature I really like as I feel it says a lot about the building itself as it can be really welcoming and also visible where to enter. This wouldn’t be a normal house but maybe just a really small plan of a holiday as we can see. It is possible for it to even be a bungalow due to its how ceiling. My favourite feature will be the spike dug into the floor and the panels get bigger and bigger at the entrance as it can give the impression of it being weightless. The side panel I have actually included in this model too however still using the metal mesh. Doing so allowed me to do it in a more flow like manner however it still goes to a point, so you are able to pick out both themes of flow and structural.
After I have actually complete the structural modelling I decided to give the flow aspect a try as I though I could possibly change my mind about the exterior however it was also mainly if there was a structure that I could put inside or some times even the lay out and the plan view of the interior. Doing this process means that I have looked at both themes and as a result this also meant that I have searched for every possible outcome again with secondary images however just to get a base idea for what I am actually looking for. To make it fair I will do the exact same process as the structural theme so that I can get a different outcome through the same process.
Even though I have used a different theme I have still noticed that there is a similar aspect of the window design to where they are large and they are eye catching, merging well with the design and theme of the building. This also allowing maximum natural light which connects well with the fact that I would like my design to be more involved with natural occurrences.
As you can see I am going through the same process that I used for the structural design o the building. However this time I am going it for flow theme objects. This will not be involving the exterior of the building as you may know from the brief however this can be useful for the plan view of the building such as knowing the space of the main design of the interior of the mini restaurant that I wish to use for my petrol and self serve station. This could also be useful for any sculptures that I wish to add in or even the roofs of the petrol fill up station.
Yet again because I had used secondary images that where mainly just flow themed I gathered a outcome to which I ended up with certain shapes that where mainly movement and flow according to my pervious research. Afterwards I will filter down to basic forms and choose a handful to create models which will help me add to the exterior or designs for the interior.
Just like the other secondary imaged models I created I have made a series of shapes from the images I gathered and I will make a model out of these shapes. You can see the natural curves of each shape and this will then therefore link extremely well with the theme I have chosen to study of flow. My outcome of this will also therefore be a flow type model with curve for corners and then from there I will then decide whether or not if I will choose structural exterior and flow interior or vice versa. As stated as before, I will print these images on thick card to which I will cut out and then interlock each of the shapes to create a standing structure. Doing so will give me the 3D structure I am looking for.
This was the very last building I created with the secondary information and the cut outs from these images. The same process was made with a large door and large window in the roof to allow light in.in this case instead of adding mesh or wires in I have use the hot clue and filled in strips as I feel this relates to the theme flow better. I have not added a tree in the build as I wanted to experiment to what I was able to do. This dome like building is also quite long as has the interior as a moon crest shape. I do like this design however I will stick to using the brief of sticking to having the exterior as structural and the interior as flow. From this I can actually take elements I might want to use. I will want to use the effect with the glue gun for the main pillars inside as I felt that it will work well with the theme of flow or even maybe covering a wall. I also did help me decided that I will want a large door with my building as I feel that it works well for giving it a good shape and would be normally the first thing you would look at. Also it finalized the idea that I want a large area or even areas of open window roofs to allow maximum light in and connect with the natural theme. This also means that trees is something I will defiantly want to include as I feel it gives a really good feel and fills the area and doesn’t leave to much empty space.
Gathering inspirations, themes and style – Interior
I am now focusing on the interior and for this I will need to do the same as the exterior, where I will not only just focus with flow designs but also structural and this is what I actually did as you can see. I like the interior being structural however I feel that it makes the building look too big and empty spaced. Also it sets a less of a calm mood than a flow interior. However like exterior, I will use aspects like the roof being in triangles and some of the triangles being windows, allowing maximum light.
This is the flow design of the interior form the secondary images. This interior is my favourite as I feel it is really warm and welcoming. In addition there is almost little sections in a from of a little restaurant like I want to make and also small levels and in this way it makes it look really interesting. In addition the walls flow in and out and this way it fills the space however not making it too cramped from the impression it gives. Sectioning off the dinning's areas in these wooden flow like walls not only gives they customer privacy but also sticks with the themes. Pillars play a big part and they come in many different designs that from and drip from the top to the bottom. These use of pillars also gives structural benefits but it helps spilt the room. Finally these flow walls, pillars and levels also work well with big tall green plants as I feel that a flow theme connects well with natural surroundings and thus plants inside would be linking well.
I decided to take some really simple line drawings of both structural and also flow interior element just so that I can understand the area a little bit better and how it moves, and as a result how much space and light it leaves. Form this I think I will want to just make it a flow themed inside. I like it because I feel that it will create a good contrast between the structural and flow, creating a good experience for the customer. Also it has a really good look and feel to the building, creating a relaxed mood once you enter.
I decided to take a couple drawings of a flow interior and from it I created a line drawing with load of annotations as I felt that a flow interior was the best. I needed to understand better how it works with a flow interior. Yet again however there is pillars which are forming and merging with the building in a water state manner.in addition even the booth are in a flow manner as they are circular and you see from the photos it has a really cool and relaxed especially with low lights it can make the room look more spacious. The roof is in a bone like structure and is in stands, linking with a natural and organic objects. This also works well with the tall green plants to also links with the natural aspect.
I did the same process again and I will keep doing it another 2 times afterwards. I really like this design as it is in a decagon like shape and has a central kitchen and you can see from all sides. The lights also extrude from the middle which I feel is a really good idea and maximises space, and showing off the tall walls. The dinning area is surround the kitchen in long straight tables and acts in a way like a fast food restaurant. I also did a plan view like last time which shows us how I perceived the area and show off the tables and also the central pillar with the kitchen around it.
This was a really different type of interior space that I wanted to study as it had different aspects that I really liked, even though it is not in a flow manner I feel that I could manipulate the way it is structured and use flow objects to relate to the flow theme. For example I like how it is structured and there are many centre support pillars however sofas have been used and covered around the pillars and as a result it allows for more seating and it covers the awkward spacing between pillars. I also really like the colour scheme as it is mainly a white and cream colour and it gives a peaceful and cheerful mood. However wooden furniture has been used in places to bring it back down from the over futuristic look like the previous interior structure. also big green plants have been used and it also breaks up the colour and sets a more peaceful feel, and thus also connecting to the natural world to which is another side theme that I wish to also aim towards.
Yet again I have choses a type of restaurant that is completely different as it helps me decide how I will use the space I have if it is limited. In addition these are primary images and from the images I gathered I was able to image the layout of the cafĂŠ and also what it would possibly look inside. As you can see from the shape it is small and narrow however the space is used really well and still having all the essentials needed. Also the shape of it I am able to relate to the flow shape as I have chosen for my building to be flow themed based inside also there are no separate tables but a long bar like table to accommodate one person as a single file. The reason for this size as it is place inside a train station, bond street, and thus a really small place is possible and as a result it has used the space up really well.
Exterior design/models with primary images
These are just some of the primary images that gathered when I went to London and I mainly only gathered structural images of the exterior of buildings. Doing so helps me link with my theme well of structural. This is my favourite theme for the exterior because it is really well built and strong but also it makes the building look futuristic. Having this feature makes the building really eye catching too and people will ant to come to use its goods and functions. In addition the windows play a big part of the building as this will allow maximum natural light in. having this contrast with the interior also means that people will gain a good experience as appreciate the building more. Also making it more squared off will mean I will be able to gain maximum space inside . I will use these images to go through the same process that I went though with the secondary images and then just add in the new models and also designs to get a final model and building. I decided to take the primary images that I took around London and I wanted to understand the buildings more as there are many different elements to a building such as the central structure pillars are placed, windows, balconies if there are any, and also the actual structure and lay out of the buildings compared to each other. As we can see we can really relate these buildings to the structural theme from not just the angular but also the lay out I interesting. The same can be sad for the windows as they are not normally just squares however they are a number of different shapes, for even the textured blinds on the outside. This also reminds me of the origami I researched and I could use it as these blinds or even as a layout of these buildings. I have to still bare in mind that I m creating a petrol station with many different functions and areas so I will need to replicate the main building for many different function and sizes. Not only this but using the building to merge into the roof of the actual petrol filling section will be needed if I need to make the petrol station functioning and pleasing to the eye and have a natural flow the building.
The primary images that I have taken have been really useful and now I am about to begin the same process as I did creating the models from the secondary images. Referring to the previous models I would like a mixture of outcomes such as at least one model showing a outside cafĂŠ area, big trees towering over, support beams running through from the walls to the centre of the building and most of all big wide entrances to welcome people to enter. All of these factors I feel are important as I have discovered them and I feel that they work well to be able to bring the heavily structured exterior and merge it with the flow interior event thought they at a really big contrast. Doing so will bring harmony to the building and also as a result they customer will feel comfortable and will then experience something like no other. I have also made sure that some of the panels I have created have a rather large surface area, and also ones that have a certain shape so that I can still use the ORIGAMI style walls to then even further exaggerate the idea of a structural exterior, and as a result interesting people even more, however not overloading the building so that it looks unpleasant.
The idea of origami also being included throws a theme of natural to it too as it is a really ancient art that has been developing ever since and as a result it gives a slight jagged edge to the building, and thus bring the futuristic structural exterior a little bit more down to earth. The method will be the same to where I will cut out the certain highlight spaces from the designs that I had created from separate drawings and then merging certain ones together. Removing all the colour into black and white like I had done shows off a number of different shapes that I have available to use, and they are what I had highlighted. Doing this small process will allow me to know the building is original and I know for a fact shapes like these I would have not been able to pick at the top of my head, and also each shape is in a structural shape, and thus leaving us with a structural building.
Just before I started to create my design I decided to have a look at what big petrol stations looked like and where I wanted my petrol station to originate from. The location I took these photos are in Pristina, Kosovo. this proved to be really helpful due to the idea of a pump and a restaurant to work. In addition I felt that the large scale of the pumps I liked and also the greenery around it, linking well with the natural surroundings, helping people forget that they are at a pump by creating a nice area pleasing to the eye. Like I said the place I originate from is also the place where the idea that of a petrol pump working with a restaurant works as the majority of pumps are at such a large scale as they have a fully functioning restaurant that links with the petrol pump. In addition it is like stepping into another world and all the payments for petrol are done outside, thus meaning unlike some petrol stations, the restaurant and the petrol pump have no connection at all, the only one being the building. I also like the idea of these pumps because they have such open space, meaning less compact ques and more pumps. In addition we can have a number of different services, such as a car wash etc. and other needs for your car, however yet again there is no connection to the restaurant. This I feel is a much better idea as all the needs there is are available for a car and the parking is also then available for the restaurant inside or a quick coffee break.
The final idea that I really like about these petrol pumps that I will want to replicate will be the massive runway almost to the garage and it is really open, meaning it is really welcoming, along with the high roof and it just makes everything less gloomy and this is what I can, also I want it placed on a main road however with natural surroundings on the outside.
This is the fist model that I had created. It is a really simple model due to the fact that the structural shapes that I used where really complex and when I do the ArchiCAD I will need to simplify it. For this reason I haven’t added any addition metal wires or mesh like previous models. They are just as simple as the models I can get and all will consist of a roof for the petrol station, indoors open space for the restaurant and also a outside area that I can use as a natural habitat area for the café, thus creating 2 different moods and atmospheres in the interior.
This specific model that I created has a number of features that also correlated well for the interior. The key features of this building will be the long corridor entrance. I feel this will be a good idea because I feel it leads people into the building and they do no know straight away what is inside however once they get closer they see the whole interior. It is really spacious inside due to the shape of it and it is like it is sectioned off in 3 different domes, with 1 of them being the garden café. Just like I thought the shapes I used have given a outcome that I suspected which is really structural. However these shapes are really different and almost jagged so that it doesn't drift off to a extremely futurist theme. The walls and roof are as one and you can see this from the shapes as the walls then almost flow and merge to turn into the roof as well. The garden café that I left uncovered is almost fenced off however the fence is such a shape that you can clearly see though it and then observe the natural setting, which is what I aimed as a theme too.
This was then the outcome of the first model on ArchiCAD and I tried to simplify it enough so that it would be possible to make on the software. I also tried to keep all key feature of this model which was the long corridor entrance, garden cafĂŠ fence and jus the general shape of it. However I did have to improve the roof section as it would not be physically possible. For the main body of the building I created a roof that followed some of the shapes that I created and also had a really structural for to it. As discovered before the building has almost 3 domes, 1 being the garden. The last dome I used the idea of the roof merging into as the roof and made a sort of tepee. There are many gaps within the tepee roof and they will be filled with glass. Doing so will allow as much natural light as possible, and thus also linking with the natural theme. To add to it I added a sort of structural themed wall near the garden cafĂŠ to give a sense of privacy. However this also allows me to add the origami styled walls on it. Also the larger panels that I left on the exterior of the building will also be possible to use the origami styled walls. Finally also linking with the research I found out about petrol stations, the roof for the petrol merges with the building and also acts like a wall for it and a pillar for support. To add to this the roof is also really simplified due to the complexity however it is still mimicking the main body roof and this really structural too. Also through this simplified version I was able to create good elevation shots and helps to understand some of the structure, also I added a plan view and you can see the tepee and also properly structured roof, along with the garden cafĂŠ.
This was the second model that I created out of the shapes that I had created. I will replicate the same process that I had previously done however I will repeat it 3 times in total and each time I get a different result each time, each with having specific key points and features. This overall will help me decide what path to follow and what aspects I feel work best. For example in this building there is 2 entrances that are clearly seen, one larger one, another to the side, most likely where I will place the parking as it will be the most convenient. The main feature of is clearly seen by the shape of it. The shape of it is almost like a snails shell, which can be related to both the themes of flow and also natural, letting the interior flow design bleed out to the exterior in attempt to make the themes work together. In addition to this the centre of the ‘shell’ is sheltered where most of the tables and chairs will be. However as you walk out of the spiral you are then open to the natural features and this will become the garden café. However even in the garden café, on the outskirts there are some pillars and supports that run over the top of the café, this will give me options whether I want to cover the café depending on the weather however I could also put a tree like canopy or mesh material. There are also a number of window slots on the walls however the majority are also on the roof, since the walls are quite small. All of these factors each play a big part as it allows maximum natural light through, thus also liking with the natural theme. Playing with the shape of the building in this way means that I will have a number of different ways I can lay out the building and also I can then choose to which I prefer to correlate well with the interior. However one thing I will try to keep the same is the roof of the petrol pump as I realised it was difficult to create on CAD software, however the key factor I will carry on is the way it merges with the building as I feel once everything I connected it is really easy to manipulate how and where things connect, and also the benefits such as extra support.
Like before I created a ArchiCAD version of the model. However this time I complicated it further and used the space I had to my advantage. I kept the shape exactly the same, as a snail shell, also keeping the support beams that arch over to the min roof so that I can then later decide whether I cover it or not and what type of material. I use the shape of the main entrance and I extended it to become the main form for the roof as you can see in the plan view.
In the gaps near the entrance where the wall is short I added large pine trees, showing scale and also linking with the natural theme. Having short walls allows the restaurant to be as open as it can and I can place windows all around to allow as much light in as possible. I also kept the second entrance as a key feature to the building and I added a lot of greenery. It also acts like a curved corridor as the garden cafÊ doesn’t start till it reaches the corner, and the curve allows it to link with the interior theme of flow. Finally I again merged the petrol roof with the walls with the building to add support and allow everything to become connected. This also shows off the fact how everything is in a structural form due to the shapes I gathered.
For my final model I decided to use the same type of structure as the previous building as I wanted to discover more about what I can do with this shell type style. I fee its best because there are 2 different entrances, one threw the end of the snail shell, and also a main entrance which can cut straight through. However when I made this model I changed slightly the shape and I made it more narrow, as a result a more elongated spiral. Along with this I made the walls more slanted as if it was going to one side. I feel this form that the building is in is really well suited to its purpose as it will need a entrance where the pumps are to excite people, however a more interesting, corridor like entrance is needed. This helps also transform from the really structural outside, as you can see from the individual pieces that I created, and then help them be eased into the really flow interior. This will be done really easily due to it also being the entrance to the garden cafĂŠ, the natural surroundings will almost distract customers. However the contrast will be really visible and this is what I want to achieve because I feel it gives a really unique experience. What I also really like about this building is the fact that all the walls, pillars, windows and doors will all point to the centre of the main dome and I feel like maybe it is a illusion like building and from this I could possibly cut out a hole or a section and I could have something coming through that. I will know I will need a support beam at the centre as all pillars and walls merge to that one point. This is where I could possibly add a tree or something to reflect the flow interior. The photos that I have taken I have made sure hat I have captured every single angle as it is extremely complex due to all the individual pieces. These will include plan views and also elevations, furthermore what the building looks like from each corner. This will also help us maybe view the inside or help us image how the interior will be structured. This has been done for every model as I feel each model is important to the process of creating the final building as they each have unique key features I would like to add.
As you can clearly see this is the smaller design out of the 3 designs as it is more narrower. I tried to keep the same style in the aspect that all the walls and pillars merge as one in the centre to act like a roof. In addition like I mentioned I have added a tree in the middle and it also acts like a support. This type of design is like the small section of the tepee from my first design however this has been rounded like it’s a 3D dome. There are many gaps that appear that cannot of been helped due to the shapes I created and as a result they are gaps that I can use for windows and there is a bigger section from the door that I have left completely as a glass roof, thus allowing maximum natural light and helping it link with the theme of natural as does the tree pillar support.
You can see from the plan views the shape of the snail shell is still apparent and is more narrow as discussed. I have also added a number of different angles of the photos and these also include some elevations in key areas where I think there is a lot of detail, such as both entrances.
I decided to add a background to the buildings that I had created as I feel it will make it much easier to imagine the building when it in a scene where you would expect it be and thus gives a general idea how it will look with the outside world. This is what I was hoping for as the exterior of the building is in such contrast to the rest of the area that it will catch someone's eye really easily and almost drag them towards it. Also when it is placed in an area for example has a lot of simple house, or even architecture such as brutalist architecture, then that will only just make it stand out even more that it has that contrast.
Looking further into the natural aspect of things I feel that all these wires and mesh buildings in way is possible to link the theme of structure to also star constellations. I feel something like star alignment is really interesting as it’s a natural occurring beauty and it can take up in many different forms, however at the same time meaning something. I have used this background with these structural star structure with the flow themed building made of metal mesh to really make it stand out and have this beautiful contrast. In addition I have added a plain city skyline as this is what I feel other buildings will looking like compared to this, and also these mechanical trees in a way. Creating something like this was easy as it was just twisting and seeing for good structures that I can manipulate to turn to a building and can be used commercially.
Having a greater look in the area and the theme that I wanted to use, I have decided to create a wire and mesh models which I have developed from past ideas and models. However this time I have not included plants and trees to the building, however I have covered the area with plants and greenery to really indulge in the natural surroundings theme. I have added a plan view with the park like place with a river also near by and this really coming along like it is meant to be there even though we have this complex metal structure which we can also see from the main image. This contrast works I feels as there are not that many colours however it still stands out even with these raw materials and showing how these themes come together. In addition I have added a selection of trees in the bottom left hand corner as I feel it really does matter what type of tree or plant you are using when deciding the area of your building as it must have the same type of form and body, such as sloping down or straight and firm.
After using a lot of the mesh products and wire forms to give me that use of structure theme I thought it would be a good idea to research some of the types of wire and metal I am able to use. They range from thin to thick and some even have a sense of flow in them,. I really like using this material as this is what I have done and I have added more solid lines to give that sense of an entrance and in a way it has created a building in way. In addition I am able to form it in way that can be a tree and even use it in the star constellation background I have done previously.
Interior design/models with primary images
Now I am moving to the interior of the model and as discussed I will want the interior to be majority flow themed. These where some of the primary images that I felt where along the lines of flow. In addition I took these images from the Natural History Museum and this also then helped me link well the images I took the theme of natural too. I also took images of some structural objects as I feel it will still be a good idea to bridge the gap a little between the two themes. Once I took them I decided to pick and chose a handful that I though I would be able to use as guild lines to furniture or how I will structure the interior. This is why I then drew and did line drawings of the images as I felt that the complex shapes would be better understood if I explore them fully. This also was a good way to help me get idea where I could possibly use these images as I simplified them down to draw. The shapes varied a lot whit a number of different textures as you can see from the notes I decided to take too. I will also be able to use the same images a number of times as I might feel the certain shape, texture or colour will be best suited as a certain object or function.
From this stage I then decide to take all the drawings that I had created from the mixture of flow and structural primary images and start to think I could use them or manipulate them in a certain way so that they could become a function. Examples of these would be like tables, chairs, pillars, walls and flooring and I felt that everything to the last detail would be needed to relate to a theme, to which would be flow and natural, to which both are represented in the primary images I took. The firs step I took was the tables and chairs. The drawings I created showed only chairs however the tables will need to be out of the same material and shape or a opposite like the other examples. you can see from the notes where I actually originated each design from and thus you can seethe direct like with the themes of flow and natural.
The next step I took was to then use the same process I used for the chairs and tables and then use the same images to come up with ideas for the lights, floors, walls and pillars. These where the things I felt really stood out in any space as they make a bold impact on what the room looks and feels like. I have to also be able to work around with the odd shapes of the textures but also the interior walls. I would have to choose also a certain type of design as I do not want any randomly designed objects. Also I will try it to be really light inside so that it is warming and welcoming.
For the next process of working out how to actually use the interior, I took the plan views of the CAD models I created and then I decided to add in certain features within the interior, the same way I wanted to add specific features on the exterior to make it stand out. I will keep using that feature and all the ones I thing work well. This then also helped me map out what the building will be able to have in it and also it gave a really good sense of scale along with it as I then put counters, tables and chairs, toilets. I even highlighted where I though a possible waterfall wall could go. The next step would actually to be to look at how it would look in 3D so drew certain angles of each corner and key spaces I felt were important in black pen, then with a red pen I added in all the details such as the tables and the lights and where they will go. The tables and chairs and all other furniture however where not drawn to the design ideas earlier however just to know where everything will be placed and how it could look if it was done in real life. As you can see I tried to give all the needs a mini restaurant could use and also a number of seats. Also elevation drawings with the plan view where helpful with the other photos as it gives a really good general view of the building, also the height of the walls and also the garden cafĂŠ.
Same process was used for the rest of the ArchiCAD models that I created. Yet again using a number of plan views and elevation views, also angled views or certain key features such as the garden cafĂŠ, entrance and the main hall, I feel that doing this process really helped be understand the scale of the building. In addition I really heled me understand the lay out of the building and also how much room I had to play with. For example with this building I had a pillar in the middle and thus I decided to use the inspiration from previous secondary images and then add sofas, tables and chairs around it, not only then able to have more customers, but also providing support to the pillar and also then if we do the pillar in a design I previously suggested it is almost like it is the centre piece of the building, thus grabbing attention from the outside. In addition I made good use of space with this spiral snail shape as I was able to ease the main building interior with the garden cafĂŠ like it was traveling to another place. I also added in circular booths that I had previously found in secondary images and I though they where a good way to give a sense of privacy and also the shape helped use the theme of flow.
As my finally design I carried on the same process and I made more progress. This was due to also having a pillar in the middle and for this reason I was able to expand the idea of sofas surrounding the pillar and this making it look like a centre piece. This time the sofas where made of polished, carved wood, and this result gave not only natural theme to it but also a flow theme from the way it was carved. In addition the centre pillar was almost disguised to look like a tall tree with some of the branches attaching to the roof like it was a explosion. This result of expanding the idea previously really engaged me and homed in better the ideas of how I want to use my space. Also there was more booths I added this time however they where straight not curved. However in this case the tables where just fences off with wooden carved panels, matching the big centre piece in the middle, this giving the themes of natural and flow along with privacy. Also now playing about with a really long flowing counter so that I can further use it as a space for people to sit, and also grab their attention as it is opposite the entrance.
This was one of the key features that I really think worked well with the exterior and I would really like to implement the idea of the garden café to be closed of however the way it is structured the fence it will really easy to see through it and be able to see the natural surroundings, thus linking to the natural theme I mentioned in my specifications. I really like the feature of having the wall pillars merging out and connects with the main roof that is in place. Doing so adds support but also still allows the whole structure to be connected as one. Finally it also allows me to add maybe glass, or metal mesh. This also then provided shelter when needed. These pillars also still close off the garden café to bring people back and remind them where they are, but still doesn’t obstruct the view of the natural surroundings.
This is a example of one of the features already explained of the side entrance and how it expands at the mouth.
Next feature that I really like is this entrance around the side where it widens at the mouth. I think it is really clever way to use the shape of the building as it is like a snail shell and thus a good use of the space. This is the second type of entrance I really like. As a main entrance I feel this will be a really good idea as it lets people walk in and not knowing what to expect. Through this way they can only see straight ahead what is in the building however once they entre further it give a much better experience as they are not expecting the rest of it. Also this long passage allows people to be eased into the different themes of the interior and exterior. I like the idea of having trees or plants growing out of the building, gives the them of natural and also breaks up the really structural exterior.
Another example of the pillars merging upwards to form a roof and connect with eh main roof in the centre.
To raise my game for the interior so that it will match the themes that I laid out which will be the themes of flow and natural. I thus went to a design show for interior design and companies showing their work. I took this opportunity to then take a number of photos of many different styles of work so that I could use it for my own. Doing this through primary images mean I will get new inspiration and ways for the layout and also colour schemes. This first slide I sectioned off so that it is only lights and lamps. There was many different styles of lights however I selected a certain few which I feel work well with the themes and also the way I wanted the lights to be, such as being low hanging to create a high ceiling illusion. Also having a lot of them I feel will make the building more bright, light and more interesting. In addition them being different heights would then make it even better as when you look at it, it will be different every time you look at it. Also having side lamps next to plants which are flow themed and also wood like shown will create a natural theme style too, also meaning it will set the mood with its low light to a really calm and relaxed one.
The next set of pictures that I took where the tables. I felt these where really important as I am going to make a restaurant. I wanted something that is possibly made of wood, has a a sense of flow and also as some glass to see through. However still being able to relate to the primary natural images that I took previously such as the crystals. I feel that the tables will play a big part of the interior design as I will need to almost match them with the chairs and thus making the situation difficult. Also maybe finding a set of tables and chairs could play useful as I will know more about how to lay them out. I would prefer however to have all the same style table however all being different in a certain way, for example the patterns.
The next step was to look at more of the chairs. This was hard as I wanted to correlate to they colour schemes and shapes of the tables that I had found. I however looked at a number of styles such as a chair and table set, sofas and booths. Doing this helps me fill the criteria that I set when I created the lay out of the buildings. Also I made sure I took some images of a bar as I need a light get relaxed mood as all of my designs have a bar in it as it’s a restaurant too. Yet again however making sure I am only selecting photos which represent flow and natural themes.
Finally for the rest of the images that I had collected I had taken shots of things I thought I could use in my interior as in the flooring, wall paper, booth walls and fake walls to create privacy. Also door patterns and fire places. I think it is important to take notes of textures as I feel having everything's smooth is really boring and simple and having the extra bumps, leaves and grooves. Also tiles and patterned/ curved structures will help relate to the flow and natural themes.
Finishing models/ cad
This will be the last model that I will make where I will be improving as I go along adding new features. I have used all the key features that I wanted to use from the models and also many different spaces for origami style faces. Greenery was also added in segments to represent the structure theme given to the exterior. Trees, bushes and people where also added for scale. This building was massively simplified in the sense so that there isn’t so much going on. In addition adding on to the design I add in some semi-transparent material, allowing light through the central strip and centre of the building. I thought adding windows would really brighten the interior and also help bridge the gap between the themes of flow and structure.
RIGHT SIDE ELEVATION
LEFT SIDE ELEVATION
Looking at the elevation side you are able to see the streamline like design, which does feel and look like it suits in well with the natural surroundings and organic theme. In addition putting it in a setting to where I feel will be a suitable place and then putting them into a plan view shows the amount of space surround it and also the tree barrier around the garden cafĂŠ to let people really connect with the natural and organic scenery.
Tapping into the idea of hand drawn and painted example of the view. Doing so really allows me to understand what it is I am making and also all the different components . In addition making the grass patches stand out and literally out of the box, shows off the little aspects I want to apply. Furthermore applying abstract surrounds as a background shows what the building looks like in a natural setting, also allowing that contrast between the colour and transparent segments. I felt setting some of the background settings as transparent meant that it doesn’t become to overpowering.
ENTRANCE 2
ENTRANCE 1
Applying some of the CAD drawings and adding some of the textures I feel will work well with my theme such as the cold steel for the structural theme however with a good contrast of different shades of wood to link with the natural and organic theme, however each are complimenting each other and making them stand out. In addition I will like to use the central tall wall made out of glass as I feel mang solid hides away the beauty of the building and also allowing people to witness the natural beauty of the outside work.
Doing this process where I use different views makes me realise how much space I am wasting. For this reason I will take this in consideration of the space and use it much better. For this reason I am being more eco friendly and also not having so much negative space within the site. I will really want to condense it so I will take this information and develop it. It is more clearly seen when I do a plan view of the site and you can see how much negative space there is even though the building layout is really good and useful. However I must take in consideration that the layout works really well as I feel it really separates the two functions which is important, even if they are on the same site. Which is why I created the little kiosk to pay from the main building. In addition using these elevation drawings helps as I am able to see that everything Is really spaced out in terms of the kiosk and building, and how much room I have in consideration to the site.
Petrol station + Dinning
A stunning backdrop and relaxed space has a really good warm feel which grabs people and gives them a unforgettable experience.
For the structure of the actual structure there is still a good link between the building and the natural and organic setting, and also applying that to the layout of the whole space.
Through this project I am trying to show the system of how this will work. In addition I want to show how it will look like in the most realistic way and how it will look once it has been put in its arrangements. In addition to show the structural methods of the whole building I have attempted to show that through the presentation.
Applying these line drawings to some of the CAD work you get a sense of what actually goes into making the building and you can also understand how complex the building is. This can be a good thing as I have really clearly seen the idea behind the structural theme however I feel I will need to simplify it down a little. Doing so will mean it will fit in better in these natural surroundings. It also really shows the structure of the building and also the section view shows how much space I have to lay with and in relation with some of the surroundings and gives a sense of scale.
Finally fully refining my building with clean sheet metal and dark oak wood to give it both the themes of structure and wood. Simplifying it down to the minimum shows the real beauty and is much easier on the eye and it looks like something you will want to have a look. In addition to open up the building I have added a number of glass sections and I feel it fits in with the futuristic feel and giving it that edge.
Evaluation After properly looking back on my work I think I have been able to come out with a really good and linked work for the work I wanted. I created something that brings two things together such as a restaurant and also a petrol station. This has been done before and has been done well as you can see from the essay that I produced, however I feel this is also a really good alternative of how to do it. I really like this set of work because I feel like to get to the stage I am now I have done some really good development work and took it down step by step to get to the stage where I have rendered all these photos. I feel like I have really shown what level I am able to work as because at every step I have looked and tried to improve my work to the best of my ability. I have tried to look at every single section, to where it interior or exterior. This is also evident through the start as I have been able to develop a number of different design and then what I showed and did was put them together to get this final theme of structure and flow. I feel like I have I have really achieved this theme as I have tried to incorporate this into everything, to where that is the structure of the building, to the interior design, idea, place and even if you look at the plan view. Overall I think I have produced a achievable building and development work for the brief and specification that I had set out.
